In 2009 an appeal was launched by a group of ex Campion students, which was later regis-
tered as ―Campion Old Boys Memorial Association‖. The appeal was to raise funds for the renova-
tion of the DeRozario building and install a plaque honouring and remembering the Jesuits from
1934 to 1975. I must commend all COBA members in Australia and overseas for their generous
donations. A photograph of that plaque is in this newsletter for your perusal.
The renovations of the DeRozario were completed in time for the start of the school
academic year. On the 3rd July 2011; (The annual old boys re-union day) a plaque on the building,
inscribed with the names of all the Jesuits who served there from 1934 to 1975 was unveiled by
Mr. J.P. Rodrigues, the first secretary of the Campion Old Boys Association in India. ―J.P‖ as he was
affectionately called, passed away on the 19th September 2011. He was 90 years of age.
It gives me great pleasure to inform our members that in May 2011
Dale Bosco Johnson a recipient of our scholarship has graduated with a Mas-
ters Degree in Business Administration. COBA wishes him all the best in his
future endeavours.
I wish to inform our members about the sad demise of one of our
Association‘s co-founders Anthony (Anto) Patterson (class of 1954) on the 19th
September 2011. COBA mourns the loss of a stalwart and passionate member
whose contribution to the Association will always be remembered.

From the Secretary
Editor’s note Christians are supposed to be the light of the world, but you can't be a light if you're not
plugged in. If you don't feel like you're getting the love you should get, then maybe you should ask
yourself if you're giving the love you should give.
This principle of giving and receiving applies to many areas of life. For example, if you in-
vest an hour a day into exercising, then you will reap the benefits of that investment—a strong,
healthy body. However, if you invest that same time into flipping channels on T.V., then you will
reap the benefits of that investment - a wasted hour.
To the Members of COBA your investment into the education of our children in India, is
a true reflection of you not only being plugged in, but sharing the love and hope with them and once
again we say ―THANK YOU‖.
God bless you

Glimpses of our Blue & White Dance
Our Blue and White Dance held on the 17th of September was fantastic especially with the music of the two great bands ―the
NEXT GENERATION ― and the mighty ―PHOENIX‖. We had great prizes for the night that was sponsored by our generous donors in rais-
ing funds and supporting us in our scholarships. I would like to thank the bands and their managers for their co-operation on that night. I
would also like to thank Lamb‘s Indian Catering for their delicious food and excellent service.
I wish to thank all our patrons, members and their families for their support by coming to our functions and having a great time.
The photographs below self explains the gala time of the night.
Our next major event is the much anticipated “ Carols and Christmas Cheer ” to be held on the 3rd December 2011. The
music for the night is by ―DJ DENVER‖. We look forward to your support and attendance.
Please get your tickets early to avoid missing out on this great event.

―Yengay Dee Kotuchee Thayloo‖ was Anto`s trade mark catch phrase, I don‘t think he ever explained to anyone what-
ever it meant, he left it up to you: he had a unique sense of humour, he always tried to be jovial and happy with a joke or two, of course he
did laugh even if you did not. He was never the same from the day Aureen passed away. He was very proud of his children and loved them
and his grand children very much. He also loved his brothers, sisters and their children and made it his duty to visit them as often as possible.
He loved India and was proud to be Indian and was equally proud to be an AI. He went back home as often as possible taking gifts
for each of his friends. Some people had a couple of best friends, a few good friends and some friends but Anto was different. He had many
good friends and a lot of friends and he was loyal to all his friends. He would step in for a doctors visit or as some called it ―Anto doing a
figure 8‖, he did not stay too long as he was on his way to visit another friend. Yes, he had many friends the numbers at his funeral
(approximately 400) said it all.
At any given time he was planning some charitable collection, or money for someone hit by a tsunami or some Campion Old Boy
fallen on hard times. Anto was instrumental in the starting of the COBA movement and subsequently was a Co-Founder of COBA Australia.
One of his priorities was to help the poorer Campion old boys in India. He was proud of the achievements of COBA Australia over the past
11 years through the Friend in Need and Educational Schorlarship Programs.
About 10 days before his death Anto raised in excess of $400.00 in aid of the AI Association of Madurai to help them build a poor
home. I tried to raise some more but I could not do as much. A person close to Anto has matched that amount and I will be handing over
that money when I visit MDU soon. If anyone would like to chip in to this cause please contact me. Anto and myself did run at least two
dances for the renovation of the Sacred Heart Church in Madurai.
Those who knew Anto knew that he loved music and dancing and in his good days he did jive and he did it well. He was proud of
his voice and he was in more than one church choir at a time. He was a religious person and attended Mass daily as long as his health permit-
ted.. All through his illness I visited him as often as possible and not once did he complain, he bore it all till the end.
“May His Soul Rest In Peace”
By Joe Lopez (Class of 1960)
About two years ago Anto was diagnosed with a terminal disease, but this did not stop him from doing the things he loved and cherished. Helping others in need was his passion and this was the reason for his frequent trips to India. He was also a co-founder of the
Association.
I was boarder in Campion from 1949 to 1955. During these seven years I spent about nine months a year away from home and
made a lot of friends with other boarders and day scholars. I made best friends with three of them. they were Sten Pears, Anto Patterson and
Cyril Cooper. Sten now lives in Ireland and I met him in 2009 at our Re-Union after 54 years. Anto and Cyril have both passed on. Anto was
known for his role as the bell ringer, his unorthodox style of hockey goal keeping and his strong voice in the choir. He was probably the only
one that I knew of who selected drawing as an optional subject for the High School Examination. He passed with a distinction which must
have made our drawing master ―Chalky‖ very happy. He was given this nickname as he had white hair and also flung the chalk at any of the
students who were disruptive in class.
Anto was farewelled with a Requiem High Mass at St. Joseph‘s Church in Springvale on the 22nd September 2011.The Mass was
celebrated by five priests, including Father Fabian Smith who is his nephew. The service was attended by approximately 400 people, consisting
of his family, friends and Campion Old Boys. After Mass he was given a ―Guard of Honour‖ by about 40 Campion Old Boys. They stood in
double file as the cortege was carried to the hearse, while the school song ―The Campion Way‖ was played.
Finally he was laid to rest in the Springvale Cemetery with his wife Aureen, who passed away in 1996.

Anto was one who enjoyed living and making others happy, the soul of any party. He was a devoted husband a loving and caring father, grandfather, and a responsible brother to his siblings. Family was an integral part of his life.
Religion played a key role in everything that he did, because he was an ever willing volunteer for anything to do with the church and the vari-
ous religious orders he encountered.
Many a get together or dance was organised by him so that the less fortunate could be helped. He was charitable to a fault and his
home was always open to anyone in need.
I had known Anto from our days as lads in Madurai and thru to our days at Campion. He was a trusted friend to all his mates.
Anto lived his life guided by the school motto "Cur Hic Status" (why stand you here) and so I can say that Anto was a proud stan-
dard bearer of his school and he did everything "the Campion way" God Bless Him!
By Emmanuel D'Silva (Class of 1954)
Tribute to Anthony Patterson (Class of 1954)
My good friend Anto Patterson a man for all seasons, such was his way of life with never a dull moment in his company. I knew him
in school as he was in the boarding along with his brother Terrence who was my class mate. Anto was the bell ringer; choir boy and an excel-
lent hockey goalkeeper.
After Anto migrated to Australia in 1979 I immediately made contact with him and our friendship was re-ignited. Both our families
were united and always part of each other‘s family celebrations. We travelled together on two occasions to Sydney meeting the Cotter
brothers, and also Melford and Dympy Irvin. We also met Anto‘s relations, Joe, Coral and Clifford Dillon. Both trips to Sydney were memo-
rable ones and I will always cherish them.
Anto was always part of my family‘s celebrations. He was the MC for both my children‘s weddings and insisted on having the Grand
March to get everyone in the mood.
Anto had good health and visited India every year helping those in need. I joined him in 2008 to India and together we met some of
our old friends in Golden Rock and Trichy.
Again in 2010 we both represented COBA Australia at the Campion Platinum celebrations, which was a great success. Thanks to
Brother Jesuraj, the principal, who welcomed us in the traditional manner showering us with kind words and shawls.
Anto will be sadly missed by me, “May His Soul Rest In Peace”
by Campion Kein (Class of 1957)
Apart from his immediate family, extended family and in-laws, Anto will always be remembered by his school, class mates and mem-
bers of COBA.
Anto was a co-founder of the Association which was launched in 1999. His heart was always with COBA, Anto was a well known
source of information about the school and past students. He will be greatly missed.
As I said in my eulogy at Anto's requiem, he was an outstanding product of that great chapel of learning-Campion. He took the
school motto - Cur Hic Status (why stand you here) seriously and lived by that creed.
I know no one else who dedicated his life as much as he did in helping others, not just the families of needy Ex Campion boys, but
others in India as well. His humble home was always open to family and friends and what was his to give he gave freely.
His love of his old school was unmatched and his passion for its teaching of faith, charity and truth was reflected when he sang the
Campion song.
May God bless him with a special place in his Kingdom.
