COACHING GOALTENDING TODAY

• “Down” is the default position. Particularly when the puck is deep

in the zone. (See “the VH” or “Reverse VH.”) Goalies are not

comfortable making saves while standing up.

• Goalies “slide and block” at the expense of “making saves.”

• Playing deeper in the net is preferred. Larger equipment makes

this possible; cuts distance to post after initial shot.

“How is goalie play different today?”

COACHING GOALTENDING TODAY

• It is still about being in proper position.

• It is still about controlling the puck.

• It is still about knowing where the trouble lurks.

• It is still about where and when the play will come to an end.

• It is still about developing a sense of timing.

“How is goalie play the same?”

COACHING GOALTENDING TODAYCoach: Avoid These Practice Habits

• Pace of drills does not allow goalie to do entire drill

• Drills all coming STRAIGHT AT goalies (full sheet)

• Few screens or rebounds

• Goalie knows who will shoot and from where and when

• “Guilt and Volume” Method

• Drills with many pucks, each for a second

• Goalie battling confidence and practice consists of

• 1 on 0, 2 on 0, 3 on 0, and Breakout/5 on 0!

• Rarely in actual crease…no pegs…no suitable warm-up

• Practice activities for goalies do not resemble game

action; more specifically, practices do not allow for

problem-specific work to be done.
