Guided Wave Radar Level Measurement in
CO2storage tanks
Levelflex M, Ideal choice for liquid CO2storage tanks.
Brewing or Soft drink production Levelflex M - FMP40 Carbonated beverages
The guided wave radar Levelflex M -FMP40 is used to measure the level in
bullet shaped CO2storage tanks
Customer Profile
Application common to Breweries andcarbonated soft drinks where CO2is stored

RiskSoft Facts
Reliable measurement was needed both forcontrol and inventory purpose. Product loss
of beer would result if control is notaccurate. The FMP 40 provided an effective
measurement with low unit and installationcost.
Application description
Products: Liquid CO2
Tanks: Bullet shaped horizontal tank
Temp: Ambient
Pressure: 250-300psiRadar: FMP40 coax or cable version
Mounting: from top of tank
Application
The customer had 6 x 6500 gallon CO2tanks, 4 located outdoors and 2 indoors
working as buffers for production. Thecustomer was relying on sight glass to
determine level but this was very unreliableand often resulted in lack of CO2or over fills.
The customer had tried other guided radarbut with poor results. They also wanted to
use existing nozzles on top of tank.
CO2has very low dielectric constant so forthe first tank a Coax version rod probe was
used to optimize the measurement. Howeverfor the second tank there was not enoughroom above the tank to allow for installation
of the rod. A cable version was thereforeused.
Measurement results
The coax version worked perfect without
any special settings. The cable probe actederratic until the patented end-of probe
function was adjusted. A single rod or cableprobe would not work without the end of
probe function due to the low dielectric ofthe CO2. They have been operational for
over 3 months and the customer is verysatisfied with the measurement performance.
Instrument description
The Levelflex M is a top-mounted, compactlevel transmitter that operates with micro-
impulse radar on the guided time-of-flightprinciple. Fluctuations in the density,
temperature, or build-up do not influencethe measurement.
Measuring principle
The Levelflex is a downward-lookingTime-of-Flight (ToF) measuring system
which measures the distance from theprocess connection to the material surface.
An electrical pulse is launched and guideddown the probe. The pulses are reflected by
the product surface, received by theelectronics, evaluated and converted into
level information.
