Hollte'l,r, Nen_gh will have their own reasons lor optimism, Including their strong 1III Ish ag_IM! Holyeross-Ballycahlll lind despite their unconvincing lorm , II their tloht I!nlshel h,ve oone their way Ind In unbeaten record ,emalnlthelr proud boast.

They will be heartened too by roeent breakthrough successel 01 Capplwhlle (1987), Louohmore/C, (1988) and Cashel K,C. (1991) and so Ihe lear 01 , Ilrsl IIn,I need not bear too helvily on their minds

Significantly, neither semHlnal produced a goal and With the IIghl defences on both sides, lhere won't be 100 many green flaos loday either, Bolh lelms have Ihelr chlel marklmen and Ihelr ability to find Ihe larget could very well deiormine the outcome Mlchlel Cleary played reelty welt tor Nenagh two weeks ago, despite a boUI of IUnelS, which reduced hiS capacity to per-

lorm al 100% and led to hIS selectIon at 1uI1-forward, HilS molt able assistant was KeVin Turner, this yelr'l Tlpp minor capt.ln, who has lurned sevpral oames lor hil club since making an Impresalve enlry v Lorrha

RObbie Tomlinson la8t year'l Tlpp minor captain will be hoping to repeat his usual good form agalnsl Toomevara, while John Kennedy has the ability 10 make the chances count Nenagh wilt need III of their Wiles to breach. very sale Toome rearguard, led by captain and goalkeeper Jody Grace.

Rory Briliane has been very lound at lull back In recenl outings, white Michael O'Meara Is flanked by IwO lively hurlers In GeorOe Frend and PhiUp Shanahan, Inllde the corner men Pat Maher .nd Declan O'Meara are tenaCIous defenders who give lIttle away. But Toome's lrump card now II mldfielder Pat King whose heloht and Ilrengih give hiS team a luperb mldl!eld Inchor, Hil prelenee In front ollhe hail-baCk line enhances the resistance 01 his delence In that he prevents so much ball Irom gelling throuoh and allows his Inner lexte' to keep their shape IniaC!.

Nenagh's response 10 this obltacle msy determine their claim 10 glory.

Up Ironl Toome have their own sharpshooters In Michael Nolsn, Tommy Dunne and Tommy Carroll, With Michael Murphy leading the sttack In faarless falhlon and Tony Delaney alwlYs IIkaly to pop up lor a score when the opportunity presentl illelf

Toomevara as delendlng championa will start lavourltal, Their victory over Safifield'i lell no room lor argument Last year'. a~perience Will be helpful and Ihey are unlikely to be unnerved by anything Ihe day produces

II Nenagh Ife to win they wlil have 10 pilY as never belore, I think they will try 10 ulilise the pace 01 thalr attack to draw tne Toome' defence out of position and Ihen deliver the ball quickly to their forwards.

The team With the beller freelaker on the day will be I lot of the way homa, bUilt won 't be won easily

I'd love to see MIchael Cleary win hi. well deserved county medal Many of hll team· mates have been tryino to help him achieve this aim, none better than hIs former county colleagues Conor O'Oonovan allull-back and John HeMernan In attack, along with Philip Kennedy of tha 10 unlucky 1984 team II midfield

Nenagh's moment II nigh bul Greyhounds have short tlll.1

You can make your own mind up _ tha only certainty Is Ihal ne~1 year's Tipp clplaln Will

Breaking new ground By M. Dundon

(Thurfes) New ground ,. be ing broken In thi s year', county l en lor hurling Ilna' wUh Eire 6; Nenagh appearing In the decide r lor the flr81 lime as they oppose the IltIeholder. Toomevar. who are l eeking their tenth IiIle.

While II Is the Eire 6g club's Iinal debut, it will not be the IIrst time the championship goes to Nenagh II they should triumph. That honour wenl to the famous Nenagh Dewets or Lahorna De Wets who triumphed In 1902 and who were beaten finalists In the lollowing two years.

Nenagh will be encouraged In their aspiralions by Ihe lact that In recent limes quite a few clubs have recorded their first tille. Cashel achieved thai goal In '91, Loughmore-Castlelney did likewise In '88 and In the previous year Cappawhlte got their name on the plinth for the Ilrst time. It will be

noted too that ClonoultyRossmore's success In '89 came after a century of waiting.

Eire 6g will also draw encouragement from the lact that they have twice beaten Toomevara this year In championship hurling but they will not need reminding that those victories wilt count lor nothing If they lose to "the greyhounds" today

Toomevara go Into today's game as cham· pions and It has to be acknowledged that when It mattered most they rose to the occasion. They won the North league In the early part 01 the year which guar· anteed them a play-off at least lor a county quarter·flnal spot. Their lorm dipped then, losing in the North semi·finat to Nenagh but they made good use 01 the

and have looked very sharp In their victories over Cashel In the quarter·llnal and Thurles Sarsflelds In the semifinal, both club's with tille aspirations

The Greyhounds are steeped in tradition and many people regard tham as being well equipped to become the lirsl club to put Tipperary sMior Iitles back to back since Kltruane McDona· gh'S great run from '77 to '7g,

The fact Ihat It is an all·North final, tho first since 80rrlsolelgh beat Kllruane In '86 before going on to win AU·lreland club honours, does not take from the county· wide appeal of this final. The tremendous rivalry between the sides guar· antees a thriller, In keepIng with the greal tradition of TIpperary

Hackett's Field, Thurles

- a proud tradition 8~ John Gullon (Tipperary SI/If)

The town 01 Thurle. and the Gaelic Athletic A .. oclatlon are synonomous. The Cathedral Town nol only served 81 the birthplace 01 the A •• oclallon 109 year. ago, but ataged one of the lirat hurling tournament In Ireland. Eaale, Sunday 1886 brought epeelal honour to the G.A.A. when a monller tournament wa. held at HeckeH'. Field, at Clongour, on the outltlrt. 01 the lown.

Five local men got together 10 slage the unique event that attracted 8 huge attendance. Hugh Ryan. Andy Calianan, Jim Stapleton. James Bullet and John Gleeson by their exploits put the town on the map and the event look on a special Importance In the annals 01 the Association .

The hurling matches took place In two lielda, owned by the Hackett famHv and according to accounts 01 the events In Tipperary's G.A.A. Story, by Aev. Canon Fogarty P.P., "enthusiasm ran riot during the many tussles lor supremacy". Point posts were erectad lor the lirst time and the teams presented themselves In gorgeous costumes Beaten but unsubdued, was the verdict in a hurling clash between the Dublin Metropolitans and Holycross Holycross won by a goal dashed In by Pat Ryan; "I hit In the lirst goal scored under Davin

rules In Tipperary", he quipped . Belore the curtain lel1 on a day 01

excitement the crowds headed by Maurice Davin, Tom Condon and the dauntless John O'leary, marched through the streets of the town to the BisMp's Palace to get the blessing and the encouragement of tha Archbishop. Visibly affected as he surveyed the scene before him, Dr. Croke said, "You have today salely planted the G.A.A. and your magnificent tournament wilt ever constitute the Premier Page of Irish Gaelic history" Following the tournament new clubs were lormed In Aoscrea, Ballina, Blrdhlll, Newport, Toor, Balfinahinch, Toomevara, Killea. Clonoulty. Cappa white, Moyglass. Glengoole. among many other areas

Today. landowner Mr. WIllie Hacket!, his wife Margaret and famlty have maintained a strong sporting tradition In this area of the town. Located close to where the hurling tournaments look place Is their Thurles Golf driving range, an ideal facility for a few shols on these winter av~nlngsl

Floodlit and the most modern of lIs kind, it certainly brings a new sporllng dimension to an area steeped In history.

And today of course G.A.A. and Golf have close associations The range was officially opened last April.

Hurling League, as Tipp. travei to play Antrim in Casement Park. I hope it will herald the end of a summer of discontent. Following Galway's two point victory over Tipperary "it" started. "It" being the public trial and judgement of 'Babs ' by a small caucus of people.

Now, constructive criticism is healthy. Constructive criticism by informed people is most acceptable but when a man is torn asunder by "fair weather" or "latter stage of the championship" critics, it is unacceptable and unfair. Hurling is an amateur sport, no one has given more to Tipperary hurling than " Babs " Keating. He brought pride, two All-irelands, one League, five Munster Championships and an Oireachtas title to the county. Sure, he made some mistakes. Who hasn't? But what about the balance? The scales weigh in his favour. The County Board gave him a vote of confidence. I ask the public to do likewise

No-one in the public eye escapes comment, whether it be in political , business , church or sporting life. Again balanced comment is accept-

25

able. Some of the worst critics haven't the courage to stand over what they write. Some use false names, others hide behind "name and address with the Editor".

I despise cowards, but I expect that Tipperary has its quota. It makes me wonder about such people. What motivates them? Are they genuine or are they so focused on winning that nothing is sacred . Are they for real? I wonder how they deal with tile real issues of life. After all, hurling is only a game!! An amateur game at that.

I hope that all spectators enjoy the games to-day. Enjoy the atmosphere of Semple Stadium. The meeting of friends, the banter, the skill of hurling , picking out "man of the match ", agreeing or disagreeing with the choice, the unique Tipperary flavour of the day.

Who will I support? As far as I'm concerned the day is all about Tipperary hurling. I will cheer and applaud skill and courage, whether the jersey be Green and Gold or Blue and Navy. Good luck to both teams, to tha referee, and may hurling be the real winner.

" We lost the game so we shot the manager" ,

The big, coloured man grinned from ear to ear as he said it and the tropical slln sparkled on his white teeth. It was on a United Nations job In Africa many years ago and I still don't krlow If the chap was telling the truth. There were a lot of men shot at the lime - some of them for less Ihan losing a football match.

Here In Ireland we don't shoot the managers (so for) and I personally am not In favour of It. But we criticise them in public and, now and then, we sack them. Good men like Fr. Michael O'Brien, Billy Morgan, Paddy Cullen, Brian MacDonald, Donie Nealon, Babs Keating, Eamonn Cregan, Mlck O'Dwyer, Mickey O'Sullivan, Brian McEnlff, Joe Lennon and a dozen more all get a lash, now and then, 01 the people's whip.

Even the hero-managers of my youth, Jim "Tough" Barry of Cork, Dr. Eamon O'Sullivan of Kerry, Hugh O'Reilly 01 Cavan and Johnny DUnne 01 Galway didn't escape when their teams were beaton. But who e~capes cr iticism anyhow? Not in this life, whatever about the next. Many years ago a great old hurler died. He had a wonderful funeral because he was a line old character. We all stood around the grave as he went down and, there by the edge, stood his old pal Billy, a tall gaunt man and another good hurler. Sadly and silently Billy watched his friend down to the final earthy bed. Then the undertaker's men got the long sack of straw to put down on the coffin so the sound of falling earth and stones would not upset the relatives, For &

moment Billy watched the men at their lillie task 01 courtesy. Then "put Ihat thing away" he growled. Startled the men looked at him. "Put that thing away, I told yeh", Billy repeated, "He can take it", And that's the way with the trainers and coaches and managers, They came up the hard way and they can take It.

Coaches are chosen by the County Committee, made up 01 experienced men, who !lane roll)' knew what they're doing. Tho coach Is always an experienced, Intelll!Oent man whose selfless er'lthuslasm will lead him on to spend many, many hours 01 his leisure, some 01 It owed to his lamlly, In the cause of twenty-live hardy young men, all mad eager to prove they're good players.

Players and coaches olten spend long hours, In darkness and rain perhaps, straining nerve and muscle, honing mind and body In the pursuit 01 athletic excellence. Why? Because they, like all human beings, wish to excel. Their games are hurling and football but we know well that the same bursting enthusiasm could also be channelled inle re li gion or politiCS or making money. What happens at the end of all the hard work, the dedication, the selfdiscipline? In games the team simply exults In victory or grinds Its teeth in deleat and frustration.

When we win, everything Is l ine, the players are great, the selectors are wise men and the manager Is magic. A golden shower 01 community praise lalls from the blue skies to burnish in glory the whole panel from captain to bagman. Is this correct? 01 course It Is. When we lose what happens? Good old Sean Citizen, the wisest judge this side

of Texas, on the terraces or the sideline, the field or the factory, tho sanatorium or the cinema, the home or the headland, will tear to small pieces the forward who missed the goat, the ba.ck who caused one, or the manager who told us beforehand that the leam would win

Is aU Ihls fa1r play? Of course it IS Good work earns praise, bad work gets blame. The cloak of victory covers many a fault. The beaten team Is naked to the skies. I see no change coming ever, AU we can hope Is that enthusiastic participation In sport will help us to be sportsmen. A sportsman Is fair and honest and he will give praise and blame as he sees fit. No doubt he will be justa little sympathetic, That forward didn't really try to miss that goal.

All we ask 01 the sportsman on the line Is thai he will use hiS loalas well as hIs voice, and at the end, sprinkle the whole wllh a few snowllakes 01 I I

art; human and bell eve It or not, so Is the coach. I remember the day In West Cor\( long ago when Timmy Joe the selector went in at the end 01 the game to console his beaten team.

"Look 8t him" says the man beside me. ·'Plck 8 team. Him? Bejays he couldn't pick apples off 8 tree" And I knew In my heart that this last statement was very wrong because when Timmy, Joe and I were boys together we "slocked" many an orchard and he was a lot laster at It than I. But you can't win, Ihe team does It for you
