These activities have been classified according to subject and will take place outside the formal teaching environment. They can practice their drawing, painting, printmaking and 3-D skills. It is hoped that much of the work produced can be entered into regional and national competitions. Each year there are fun-filled long weekends away for the Juniors (during the Easter holidays) and the Seniors (February half tem). Junior Christian Union (for First to Third years) meets every Tuesday at 1.20pm in MA6 Senior Christian Union (for Fourth to Sixth form) meets every Friday at 1.20pm in MA6 The next residential trip is the SCU Houseparty for Fourth year-Upper Sixth from Saturday 14 February to Monday 16 February 2015 for a weekend of activities and time to unwind at the end of term. Application forms will be out later this term and can be obtained from Mr Wenham. COMBINED CADET FORCE Consisting of an Army and RAF section involving students from Third Form all the way up to Upper Sixth, CCF training is held on a Friday afternoon, commencing at 1600hrs to 1800hrs. In addition to the weekly parade nights the CCF also involves camps, exercises, ceremonial parades and various adventure training activities, often during weekends and school holidays. CHARITY GAMING This fundraising event is held Thursday lunchtime at 1.30pm in PH2. Various consoles are used, PS3, X-Box, Wii etc. and a 50p donation to participate. All proceeds go to charity. DANCE CLUB Junior Dance club with a professional dance teacher (tbc) teaches a range of dance, but mainly focuses on contemporary styles. See Miss Boulton for details. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB For those who are interested in learning how to use a digital camera, what functions their camera has, take fantastic photos and maybe use them for seasonal cards. The club will be open to 1st- 3rd year Year students. Students are expected to bring their own cameras and to be responsible for them. Thursday 1.30-2.00pm in MA5. See Mrs Jones for details. DRAMA CLUB (JUNIOR) Junior Drama club is open to all students in the First to Third years and meets Tuesday lunchtimes at 1.20pm in the Theatre. The club is lively and informal and allows people to improve their improvisation and performance skills. See Miss Boulton for further information. DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD SCHEME AT BRONZE AND GOLD LEVEL This involves four sections: Physical Recreation, Skill, Service to the Community and an Expedition. Each individual section involves participants in a wide range of activities. The Physical Recreation is sport based (individual or team). In Service to the Community, students are encouraged to get involved in worthwhile projects outside school e.g. serving in a charity shop or helping the elderly. The Skill section is about pursuing a new non-physical hobby or skill, or developing an old one e.g. playing a musical instrument. Gold Candidates (Sixth Form) have to complete their expeditions in wild country, and Bronze candidates (Fourth and Fifth year students) venture to SW Surrey for their expedition element. The sign-up for Bronze is June of 3rd Year (all activities will take place during the 4th Year), and Gold is November for the L6th Form. We endeavour to accommodate all students that apply but may have to limit number if the application numbers are too high. ENGINEERING CLUB This club is of particular interest to those in the Lower Sixth considering applying for engineering courses. The focus will be on designing and building ‘challenge’ projects. The first project is to build dragster race cars, powered with rechargeable electric drills, culminating in a race-off! Mondays, 4.15pm, DT3 with Mr Skeates. FARADAY SOCIETY The Faraday Society gives Sixth Form students the opportunity to explore topics outside of the A-level Physics and Chemistry specifications. The meetings are a mixture of student-based practicals (e.g. the physics of soap bubbles), discussions of classic experiments from the history of science (e.g. building a voltaic pile) and looking at some of the latest research, published in journals such as Nature or Scientific American. The society’s main meeting (Faraday Society Discussions) is on Thursdays, at 1.30pm in Physics 3. Interested students should see Dr Winning or Dr Crampin for more information. Last summer, as part of our on-going links with Sacred Heart school in Ghana, the students spent a fantastic 3 weeks visiting the best of Ghana’s jungles, mountains and beaches as well as spending a week in school painting a toilet block they had funded and decorating a library. Monday 1320 Finlay Gallery with Mr Dyson POLITICS SOCIETY This group invites a number of well-known and high-profile speakers from a broad range of different political beliefs and occupations come and talk to students. They organise mock elections and trips to the House of Commons, the British Library and the Jonathan Dimbleby Programme on a regular basis. React! is a co-curricular Chemistry activity for the Fourth and Fifth form. The aim is to give students the opportunity to carry out extra practical work and to learn a bit more about Chemistry outside of the confines of the IGSCE course. During the Autumn Term we’ll be looking at crystals and crystal growing, making paper, designing “food” for cut flowers, and how to strengthen ice. Monday 1.30–1.55pm in Chemistry 1. SAILING Sailing continues to be a popular and fast growing sport at KGS. Dinghy sailing is a Wednesday afternoon games option for 5th and 6th Form and a Tuesday afternoon Games option for the 4th form. The dinghy sailing takes place at the Albany Sailing Club on the Thames where students sail a range of boats including Laser Picos, Topper Vibes and Wayfarers. Powerboating also takes place when conditions are unsuitable for sailing. Opportunities for large boat, residential trips also occur throughout the year. Typically a middle school sailing weekend takes place in the Autumn Term with a longer sixth-form trip during the Spring or Summer. A variety of boats are used for these trips ranging from classic pilot cutters to fast, offshore racing yachts. In recent years we have chartered a Tall Ship from the Tall Ships Youth Trust and also taken part in the International Tall Ships Race, sailing from Waterford in Ireland to Scotland. We also took part in the famous Round the Island Race and had a week long cruise to The Channel Islands and St Malo. Further afield, in 2013, fifteen Fifth Form students spent a week sailing in

Turkey on a Sunsail Flotilla holiday and a similar trip is planned for summer 2015. For more information, please see Mr Forsyth. SCIENCE CLUB (JUNIOR) Junior Science Club - First to Third years. Every week starting after the co-curricular fair, overseen by Mr Rodgers in B1. Wednesday 1.20pm SENIOR TECHNICAL CLUB The Senior Technical club is for students in the Fourth Year to Upper Sixth, and meets on Mondays at 1.30pm in the Control Room. Students advance from basic technical skills to design and operation in large scale productions. Students can specialise in a chosen area of design of tech. Please see Mr Gray. SUSTAINABILITY GROUP The Sustainability group meets termly at 1.30pm on a Thursday in GG2 to review and implement ideas to improve quality of our environment at school and in the wider community. This includes organising events to raise awareness of related issues. Examples of recent events and activities have included: organising a chocolate-tasting event to mark the beginning of Fair-trade Fortnight, organising an accessories swap to cut down on ‘throw away fashion’, and organising new recycling programmes in the school which have also raised money which we have put towards rainforest and species protection abroad. Alongside these activities we have also carried out an environmental review of the school to inform future decision-making processes. An opportunity to get involved with a variety of projects and competitions. For students of any age. Wednesday, 4.00-5.30pm in DT1 with Mr Farr & Mr Halls. THEATRE TECHNICAL CLUB (JUNIOR) This is a fantastic opportunity for students in the First to Third Form to develop skills in all areas of Technical Theatre including: lighting, stage management, sound and special effects. Students who attend will follow a practical course and during productions students may be called upon to operate the show, led by Mr Gray our Theatre Director, a professional who has worked on many shows in the West End. The Club will be run on Wednesday lunch time between 1.20-2.00pm, in the theatre. Please see Mr Gray for details. TOUCHSTONE At Touchstone, we embark upon a quest to address the ultimate questions about life, the universe and everything. Whether or not we arrive at a final answer is not vital, it is the process of enquiry in which we are interested. If philosophy is exercise for the enquiring mind, then Touchstone will provide you with an intense and enjoyable workout. Everyone has the opportunity to present ideas, debate concepts and have their views challenged. There will always be a member of the Religion and Philosophy department present for support but, at Touchstone, students are in the driving seat. Sixth Form students, Fridays, RP2 1.30pm. YOUNG ENTERPRISE The Young Enterprise Company Programme offers Lower Sixth Form students the chance to prepare for a working life through the experience of running their own company, supported by advisers from local businesses. Students gain an understanding of how a business works, ranging from the formation of a Board of Directors to the raising of share capital, to the design, manufacture, marketing and sale of a core product (or service). They develop the ability to work as a team and to improve their communication skills. In addition, they gain opportunities to take responsibility and show initiative, as well as enhance their time management skills. Students opting for this activity need to be committed to get the most out of it. Company meetings take place on either Mondays, & Thursdays between 4.15pm and 5.15pm in MA6.
