Co-curricular Activities At Hunter Valley Grammar School Students can choose from a wide range of region-

leading academic, cultural and sporting co-curricular activities.

Co-curricular activities are linked in the overall holistic development of the student. A wide

ranging co-curricular program complements the academic life of students. We encourage

all students to become highly committed in both of these domains.

This handbook summarises our cultural, sporting and related co-curricular opportunities for

the information of parents and students. Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate

to contact, depending on the area of interest, Mr Tony Burgess (Director of Sport) or Mr

Johnston Parkinson (Director of Music) or any of the co-ordinators listed in the Handbook.

We look forward to seeing all students take a full and active part in the co-curricular life of

the school.

Student responsibilities

We must insist that, when a student accepts membership of a school team or group, she or

he accepts all the commitments involved in that membership. It is, therefore, not acceptable

for students to miss practices, matches or performances or to arrive late for these

commitments.

While students must be discouraged from making personal arrangements which conflict with

their co-curricular commitments, it is important also that parents do not place their children

in a position that forces them to compromise their responsibilities to their team or group. We

encourage parents to recognise their child’s obligations to his/her team or group, and ensure

that these obligations are met.

If for some reason a student is unable to attend a practice session, a written note from

parents or carer, requesting that a student be excused will be required for students. This

should be given to the appropriate coach. Students will appreciate that this is only a matter

of common courtesy.

Academic Plus After School Classes

Senior Study Skills (By Invitation/Referral)

Monday through to Thursday 3 – 4.30 pm and Friday 3 – 4.00 pm ‘Senior Study Skills’ is an invitation only

group for Year 11 and 12 students. Work completed is based on current class work and assessment tasks,

with the class being facilitated by Student Services staff. During 'Senior Study Skills’ students are given

direction in the following: revision and study techniques, specific vocabulary that is required for the HSC is

taught and revised, essays are written, quotes are learned and work toward improving take home

appraisable tasks occurs. This all takes place alongside planning work for home, improving responses, the

writing of draft tasks and submission of drafts to teachers for feedback, and revising for upcoming tasks.

Rigour is a key word for this class .... hopefully giving students the skills and confidence to move to

independent rigour.

Under Pressure

Friday afternoon 3 – 3.50 pm, designed for Senior Students who struggle to write to a time frame, or who

become anxious under the pressure of exams/time constraints. Students are provided with a practice

extended response question (from a variety of subject areas), they are supported to scaffold their response

for 5 - 10 minutes then it is 'heads down' and writing for the remaining 40 minutes. Responses are then

given to the classroom teacher for feedback - the program is designed for Year 12 students; however, we

have also worked with Year 11 students who are keen to improve their skills, time management and

management of exam pressure. Under Pressure is staffed by Student Services staff.

Year 7, 8 and 9 Essential Skills (By Invitation/Referral)

Monday through to Thursday 3 – 4.00/4.30 pm, targeted students are given assistance to improve their

literacy, comprehension and written responses, alongside their understanding of mathematical concepts.

All classes are based on current skills, current appraisable tasks and the enhancement of skills to support

completion of these tasks. During the class students are given direction in the following: revision and study

techniques, teaching of specific vocabulary that is required for the completion and understanding of class

work and tasks, essays and tasks are written and edited, alongside guided revision/study for upcoming

tasks are all focus areas of the class.

Academic Study (By Invitation/Referral)

Year 9 and 10 Academic Support is catered for on a timetabled elective line, 'Academic Study', and is by

invitation/referral only. During the class students are given direction in the following: revision and study

techniques, specific vocabulary that is required for the completion and understanding of tasks is taught

and revised, essays are written, quotes are learned and work toward improving take home appraisable

tasks, alongside planning work for home, guided revision/study for upcoming tasks are all focus areas of

the class. Key mathematical concepts such as algebra, fractions and percentages are also taught during

Academic Study as the need arises.

Tutoring – Subject Specific

Tutoring is held Monday to Thursdays from 3:15pm to 4:30pm, with the exception of Week 1 and last week

of each term. Parents and students choose to enrol in these classes, and it is available to students in years

9-12. These sessions are held with specialist teachers to promote deeper understanding and provide time

for practicing skills. Students receive help in preparing for tasks, focusing on developing skills in

interpreting and answering examination-style questions. Time is also allocated to assist students with

concepts that have caused difficulties in class and clarify these concepts.

The subjects being offered differs each year according to needs and numbers and availability of tutors.

Numbers and students in each class are flexible - if a student no longer requires the assistance that Student

Services delivers then we encourage them to move to the Subject Specific tutoring sessions that are also

run through the AcademicsPlus program, or to independence. If staff, parents, or a student themselves,

alongside supporting evidence, demonstrate that a student truly requires the support of Student Services,

or would benefit from the style of support given, then classes grow - it is about the needs of the student and

how those needs might best be met.

Aerobics – Development Squad

This program is designed for those students who are just beginning aerobics or who have only competed

limited times. It gives students an opportunity to be involved in a great sport, and have fun learning

something new. The HVGS Aerobics Development Squad will be open to all students from Years K – 12 and

will include fitness training, skill development and choreography. Coaching will be under the guidance of

both HVGS staff and external coaches. Students participating in this opportunity will not be competing in

any competitions. Rather this is an opportunity for students to get a taste of the sport and will assist with

our selections into our representative squad the following year.

Gaming@HVGS

With its inaugural year in 2020, Gaming@HVGS is back again for 2021! Most fundamentally, Gaming@HVGS

exists to provide a space to encourage and support the nascent passion for gaming within our school

community. Our ethos is to create a supportive and above all fun environment where students with an

interest in gaming can meet, establish new connections with like-minded students and share their

enthusiasm and passion for the medium over a few friendly rounds on the Nintendo Switch. Although the

club is fundamentally for eager hobbyists, we hope that students will recognise that they have the exciting

opportunity to turn their passion into a dynamic future career in a booming industry should they wish.
