    Course Description

This one-day symposium is designed to provide up-to-dateinformation on how to recognize, diagnose, treat, and followcommon rheumatologic conditions. Primary care physiciansor those that provide primary care to their patients arethe target audience. We will emphasize early diagnosis,

identification of risk factors for prognosis, intervention, earlyrather than later, and side effects or toxicities to treatmentstrategies.

A partnership between primary care physicians andrheumatologists is critical to identify situations that requireimmediate management. We will emphasize managementand treatment of certain conditions like osteoporosis, gout and hyperuricemia, new paradigms for treatment offibromyalgia, and the latest treatment advances in ankylosingspondylitis and lupus.

Our always popular hands-on sessions with the expertswill again emphasize office-based practices such as joint

examinations and injections, how to monitor and assess thesafety of biologic agents, what to do with a positive ANA andanti-CCP antibody test result and what you need to knowabout acute arthritis. Finally, we will present a lecture duringlunch where the topic of Atherosclerosis will be addressed.

    Educational Objectives

nExamine joints and surrounding structures to makea differential diagnosis among acute and chronicrheumatic diseases

nPerform injection techniques in order to manage softtissue conditions and aspirate joints for diagnostic and

    therapeutic reasonsnPrescribe appropriate pharmacological therapies

according to recent evidenced-based data and expertconsensus to improve outcome, relieve pain, andimprove quality of life for patients with rheumaticdiseases

nWhen making therapeutic decisions, incorporate long-term outcomes, including prognosis and risk for yourpatients with chronic rheumatic diseases

nDifferentiate ankylosing spondylitis from other causes ofchronic back pain to reduce debilitating effects in yourpatient population

nDesign specific treatment plans based on the variousstages of Lupus severity and prognosis, and targettherapy to the specific patient population in question

nDifferentiate between various stages of gout and identifyhow newer, less toxic therapies might impact the long-term clinical management of gout

nAssess the importance of evaluating high risk patients forosteoporosis and how to determine the need for bonemineral testing
