APPENDIX B: .
SEVENTEENTH CENTURY GRlW.MAR SCHOOL LIBRARY COLLECTIONS
In this Table four seventeenth century English grammar school
library collections are compared with the list of books suggested by
Charles Hoole in 1660 for inclusion in school libraries. In the
first column are listed the "subsidiary books" which were to "be
laid up in the Schoole-Library", using the rather vague biblio-
graphic details given in Hoole's A New Discovery of the Old Art of
Teaching Schoole .•• • In the second column, the works mentioned by
Hoole are listed with further bibliographic details, as they were
identified by E.T. Campagnac in his 1913 edition of Hoole's A NewI
Discovery . .•• In columns three to six these works are noted when
they are found in. any of the four grammar school library collections-
Hawkshead, Heskin, St. Albans, and Bristol - with the bibliographic
details as given in th~ appropriate school library catalogue. At the
end of the comparative Table, all the other books (that is, works not
specifically r ecommended by Hoole), in each of these four catalogues,
are listed.
The following sources were used in con~iling the Table:
Charles Hoole, A New Discovery of the Old Art of Teaching Schoole ••. ,(London, 1660).

A note at the e nd of thecatalogue reads "This catalogue is very similar to those madein 1658 and 1687 by Mr. Stephens. the· master of that time ."

APPENDIX E:
A SURVEY OF LIBRARIES IN.·I NDEPENDENT .SECONDARY SCHOOLS
IN QUEENSLAND 1978
Very little accessible published information existed on school
libraries in independent schools in Queensland when I began my
research in 1978. At that time I was aware that a library had been
in existence at Townsville Grammar Schoal from 1888,1 and that some
other independent schools had libraries which were older than this,
though I had no further information about them. It was apparent that
in order to collect reliable information on individual school
libraries, I would need to visit the schools, work through any
library records available, check through older library books which
might have survived, read the "Library Notes" sections of the school
magazines, and interview older staff members. Two days spent investi
gating such sources at the Townsville Grammar School convinced me
that visits to a number of schools would yield a great deal of useful
information both about those school libraries and about school
library development generally. Because travel in Queensland can be
difficult, time-consuming, and expensive, I needed to identify those
schools which had older libraries, or archival collections of school
records which might include library records, so that visits to the
schools could be planned in detail some time ahead.
From lists prepared by the Guidance and Special Education Branch
of the Queensland Department of Education, the Catholic Education
Offices in Townsville, Cairns, and Rockhampton, and the Association
1. Townsville Gramrrar School Magazine, 1897, p.4.

light of modern school library standards, to call a bookcase in the
dining hall, or a few hundred books in a top corridor, a "library".
The independent schools in Townsville and Charters Towers were
not included in this questionnaire survey, since I already had
fairly detailed information about the. library provision in each of
them, having visited them several times to supervise Townsville
College of Advanced Education students on practicum. By contacting
' t he principals and school librarians, I was able to make arrangements
to look at the relevant records at the Townsville Grammar School, St.
Anne's School, Townsville (now the Cathedral School of St. Anne and
St . James), St. Patrick's College, Townsville, All Souls' and St.
Gabriel's School, Charters Towers, and Mount Carmel College, Charters
Towers ..
Though this questionnaire was used to collect information about
the historical resources in the schools related to school library
development, and as a basis for arranging visits to schools for
detailed work with the library records, no attempt was made to do an
historical survey of school libraries by questionnaire. In her
thesis on Pennsylvania school libraries, Sister M. Constance Me1vin1
noted that she had tria1led an historical survey questionnaire form
with the incumbent librarians in a group of schools in Pennsylvania,
and found it unreliable:
••• these persons were unable to supply the needed informationthemselves, were sometimes unable to get reliable informationfrom fellow teachers, tended to glorify with complete credit aformer superintendent, and failed to supply information whichwas available elsewhere in published form. The idea of usingthe questionnaire was then abandoned. The difficulty of obtain-

.Li br a r y Reso ur ces Cen t r e ,26th J une , 1978.
I am preparing a thesis f or the James Cook Uni ver s i ty of Nor t h Queens l andon the history of school libraries in Queensland. So that the f inal work wi l lreflect the gr ea t contribution of non-State schools to the development of schoollibraries in this State, I am s eek ing your help.
I am enclosing a very s hort questionnaire, wh i ch I should be most gratefulif you , or your librarian or teacher-librarian, could fill in, and return to mein the stamped self-addressed envelope provided. This questionnaire has beenprepared so that I shall have an idea of the approximate age of your schoollib r a r y , and the availability of any library records, such as early accessionregisters, minutes of parents ' or staff meetings at which the library might havebeen discussed, book lists, i nvoi ces , old order lists , old library books stillin the school, repo r ts of the librarian, articles about the library in the schoolmagazine, plans , photographs, and so on. I am aware that, because of climaticconditions in Queens l an d, much of this material may no longer exist in manyschools . However, I should be very interested to know of any such mat erial whi chmay still be i n your school, even i f records are not extensive.
For your i n format i on in answering the ques t i ons , I am def ining as a "s choollibrary" any room or collection of boo ks which a school itself chose to call a"library". I know t hat l ibra r i es have existed in many Queensland schools f r omthe 188 0' s , and possibly earlier , even t hough a great number of t hese woul d havecon s ist ed of t hirty or f or t y books in a cupboard i n a corner of a cl a ss r oom, ora smal l teachers' reference collect ion i n a staff r oom. I am j ust as interestedin those libraries as in those whi ch conform to the modern i dea of a schoollibrary media cent r e .
In r elation to Question 5, pl ease be assur e d that, i f I did vi s i t yours chool to read any of your lib rary records, I would use materi al gather ed onlywi t h your permissi on .
I a polog i s e for t h is int rus ion on your time, and thank you i n ant i c ipat ionof your help .
Your s sincerely,
~ «:::.-.e-.,--_

BOOKS BORROWED FROM HOUSE LIBRARIES
IN AN ENGLISH PUBLIC SCHOOL, C. 1905
w. Kennedy, writing in 1906, gave a list of books which had
recently been borrowed from two of the ten house libraries in his
school, an English public school in which boarders were accommodated
in several houses, each under the charge of a master. This list,
consisting chiefly of fiction titles, illustrates the leisure reading
character of these libraries:
