Clyde Jenkins

On Civic holiday Monday, Clyde Jenkins celebrated his 84 birthday by winning himself a sil- ver medal in Le tour de Terra Cotta for his age group. Mr. Jenkins has led a very healthy active life, and to this day finds the time to bike two to three hours almost everyday. An endurance swimmer until he was 30 years old, at that time he switched over to running. He ran everyday, slowly getting better and better. At 57 he retired and decided he wanted to start running in races and com- peting. “I wanted to start run- ning competitively because I never did run in a race up until that age,” he said in an interview. At this point in his life he spent half the year in Canada and the other half in California. He joined the San Diego track team and started running with other people, which was what he wanted. “I didn’t really realize I was fast until the first big race I went in and I was merrily running along when I looked over and I had just passed a contin- gent of marines,” Mr. Jenkins said. He commented that he ran in a few races in California and got lots of medals from those races. “I’ve got the bronze medal from the athletic congress of the United states,” he said. “I ran 10K in 39 minutes and 10 sec- onds when I was 61 years old.” Mr. Jenkins said the man who beat his time was the gentleman who now holds the best time in America for the 10K run. “I didn’t pick up cycling until the air got bad down in California and I decided that I was going to go over and see what it was like in Florida,” he said. He joined the Gulf Coast Running Club in Florida and kept up with his running. It wasn’t until he was 61 that he got on a bike. He commented that it was a round about way to get into biking. When he visited a son who lives in the U.S. he saw his son’s bike in the garage. “I said to myself, ‘I’m gonna hop on that bike and see if I can still ride,’ ” he said. “From the minute I got on it I was glued to it, every chance I could in the evening I’d hop on it and go.” Mr. Jenkins bought himself a racing bike with the sole purpose of getting good enough and fast enough that he could race on one as well. The last race he did in Canada before Le tour de Terra Cotta was the Hockley Valley duathlon seven years ago. Three years ago, he was hospitalized after experi- encing severe back pain. The pain was so bad that he could hardly drive or live his usual active life. “I had such pain,” he said. He spent six months in the hospital before mov- ing into the Lord Dufferin Centre. Six months after moving in, he decided he didn’t like the food enough to stay there and moved into an apartment just up the street. “I was accustomed to doing my own cooking and eating the special food that I’d been eating since I was about 30,” he said. Since his stay at Lord Dufferin Mr. Jenkins has gotten back on the bike and back to a higher level of fitness. During his stay at the seniors’ residence Mr. Jenkins sold his car and hadn’t been able to get himself or his bike to any races until he met Darrin. The two men have formed a friendship and Darrin has helped him get back into racing. “If it wasn’t for Darrin this would never have hap- pened,” said Mr. Jenkins. “I don’t have a car, since when I was in Lord Dufferin Centre I sold mine.” He said he got a great reaction from people on Monday. “They’re amazed. I had people who tell me that I’m an inspira- tion.” On Monday he finished in second place in his age division. “A man 72 years of age came in first, so I don’t mind,” he said. Darrin also gave Mr. Jenkins a special cycling shirt showing all of his sponsors and his new nick- name Clyde the Glide on the back. “I was so amazed down at that event yesterday, the reaction because they announced it over the loud speaker that I was 84 yes- terday and everybody sang happy birthday,” he said. “I think somehow I’m extremely lucky.” Orangeville Citizen/Free Press and Economist August 5, 2010 A3 By LINDSEY P APP Staff Reporter To get your Employee Price, visit your Ontario Ford Store or ontarioford.ca today. ontarioford.ca Now you pay what we pay for the the best prices of the year.
