This issues featured colleague is Karen S.

Karen was born in Glace Bay and raised

in Mira Road. Karen is known for her

hearty laugh that fills the clubhouse. She

is also known for helping other colleagues

with computer related issues and

generally being empathetic to the issues

of other colleagues

Karen is getting more comfortable in being open about her own

history and anxiety and depression. When asked she credits her doctor

with providing the right combinations of medication for giving her back her

life. back

Karen believes her involvement with Crossroads to give her a sense

of purpose. She has the opportunity to learn new skills. Additionally she

feels she has benefitted by the support of other colleagues.

She came to learn about Crossroads through a past member who

advised her to take a tour of the clubhouse. Later on, she was advised by

her doctor to seek out membership in the clubhouse. She describes her

experience at Crossroads to be generally positive. Karen enjoys the

clubhouse environment and appreciates the positivity from her fellow

colleagues.

When Karen is not at Crossroads she can be found indulging in her

hobbies of crocheting and knitting along with learning more about

computer related matters. Karen also has a love of languages and tries to

learn more about other languages. Karen is proficient in French and is also

learning about languages such as Dutch and Italian and most recently

Mi’kmaq. Karen also spends time chasing after her therapeutic but

mischievous Jack Russel mix. As a result Karen always shares amusing

stories about her dog in the clubhouse. Be sure to say hello to Karen if you

should see her around the clubhouse.

After what was a fantastic but busy week it was so nice to log on to our

Facebook page to see this post from one of our colleagues. Well said,

we couldn't agree more! ‎Kyle‎M‎ to Crossroads‎Cape‎Breton

“I guess everyone was too wore out to make an official post, but as someone who attended the conference in its entirety, I doubt anyone will argue with me when I say that the experience was amazing! All plenaries and workshops were very well done and informative, and the evening events were perfect for showing our colleagues from across Canada a little taste of Cape Breton. Was great to reconnect with a few familiar faces from previous conferences and training, as well as all the new faces. Special shout out to Progress Place Clubhouse, congrats and good luck in hosting the 7th Canadian Clubhouse Conference in 2020”!

Accreditation Time After many years of planning and months of preparation, Crossroads has seen the culmination of its

efforts in a Canadian Clubhouse Conference that was universally heralded. One would think that Crossroads

would take a moment to enjoy the satisfaction that comes with a job well done. However at Crossroads we

don’t rest on our laurels.

While Clubhouse Conference planning may be a thing of the past, the time has come to plan for

Crossroads upcoming accreditation process. Accreditation is a process where the Clubhouse proves it meets

the criteria and eligibility for membership with Clubhouse International, an organization within the range of

300 clubhouses in its fold. The accreditation process is a lengthy process. Our self study must be completed

and submitted by October to prepare us for our accreditation visit in November.

In the place of Conference Planning, Accreditation meetings will be held in it’s place. Stay tuned for

more information. The undertaking will be considerable and every effort at assistance in achieving this

undertaking would be appreciated. We need you here to make this process a success.

Mothers day sparks fond memories

It’s another year of missing my mom. I think of her every day. I took care of her when she got ill. We shopped together and laughed at the funny

stories from the past. Even though mom was in poor health, we had one year of good times and we let Mom enjoy her freedom when it came to tidying up her own apartment or doing her own wash.

One day, when we were in shopping at Sobeys, I turned to look at Mom and she

collapsed. I was in shock until I called for the staff to call 911. They came quickly and checked Mom all over. Then she woke up. The paramedic said all her vitals were fine. The paramedics said to me: “Do you want to go to the hospital, with your mother?”

“Well,” I replied. Then Mom spoke up and said: “I feel a lot better. My daughter

and I will go home in a taxi to my apartment.” So off we went, first to the checkout. The manager said” “Don’t worry we will

deliver your groceries. No charge. Before we left I thanked all the staff for their kindness and how they treated my dear mother. My mom was so brave.

When I would begin to leave after a visit she would always say” “I love you; I

don’t know what I’d do without you.”

God bless you Mom, and a Happy Mother’s Day to all moms.
