President Ted’s Report
Page 2
On behalf of management and the
board of directors I would like to
thank all for their efforts in what I
believe was a very successful Anzac
Day Commemorative Service.
Our MC Trevor Mander did a
wonderful job as did the WINDS
Band, the 211th Adamstown Army
Cadets and the Rathmines Wangi
Singers.
A big thank you to all those
volunteers who assisted on the day,
without their help we would not be
able to host such events. Also
thank you to the Fishing Club
Members who ran the two up on
the day. From their efforts $183.65
was donated to Legacy.
Various photos are included of
some of those in attendance on the
day.
Cheers, Ted.

Bowls Umpire Report
Further to the new rules in regards
to the use of Bowlers Arms, the
following applies:
The Bowls Australia Artificial Devic-
es Policy states that:
“Only approved arms (with a BA
logo as part of the National Mer-
chandising Program) can be used
in Australia. Modifications are not
permitted (with the exception to
the rubber grip on the bottom of
the arm which may need to be re-
placed as it wears out). Bowls Aus-
tralia has advised that if the BA
logo on your Arm has worn off or
been removed for some reason,
you can obtain a replacement one
direct from Bowls Australia. This
can be done online or by mail and
should include a photograph of
your bowler’s arm so that they can
confirm that it is an approved
one”.
The lady Umpires held a workshop
after a gala this week to go
through all of the equipment avail-
able from the Umpire’s Kit. The
ladies were enthusiastic in their
use of the equipment.
The 2019 Women’s Pennants sea-
son is now complete. The men’s
2019 Pennants season is also com-
ing to an end and we have really

Familiar Faces
John Neaves was born in Lismore
in 1942 to his parents Jack and
Joyce. His first school was East Lis-
more, then Dunoon, then Dryabba
Creek and then Hogarth Range
which was the largest he attended
with 14 pupils. He did not attend
high school as he finished school
when he was 12½ to help out as
share farmers on a dairy. In those
days, milking was done by hand
and with 120 dairy cows, needed
all hands on teats to help. John
joined the railway in 1956 and
transferred to Newcastle in 1963 as
a shunter hooking up steam en-
gine 3801 which was the Newcas-
tle Flyer going to Sydney and back.
John met his wife Elizabeth in 1963
and they married in 1966. As a
result of that union they are the
proud parents of three children,
grandparents of 12 and great
grandparents of one, all of which
live in the Valentine area.
John left the railway in 1966 and
went into the food industry repre-
senting Marrickville Holdings and
stayed there until 1981 where he
then joined Ingham Chickens as
Northern NSW Sales Manager
looking after territory from the
Harbour Bridge to the Queensland
border and managing the sales
office at the Cardiff Chicken facto-
ry. He retired from there in 1995
after having open heart surgery.
John joined Valentine Bowling
Club in 1979 with his main inter-
ests being the Fishing Club and the
Snooker Club. He was a board
member for a number of years in
the mid 80’s and he stepped down
as Vice President in 1987 to com-
plete renovations to his home in St
Johns Drive - Sheppards Creek op-
posite the greenkeepers shed. He
lived there for about 30 years and
was a regular seen paddling across
the creek and joining his many
friends at VBC.
John returned as a board member

the NDBA delegate and 8 years as
an umpire. He stepped down as

Australia, however he was still a

was made a life member of our
club.
John’s bowls achievements include
winning the minor singles in 1999
and he was part of the team that
won the triples in that year. He
was also part of the team that won
the grade three pennant. He was

Valentine Lions Club News
The 30th Valentine Lions Club
sponsored Anzac Day Service was
held in magnificent Autumn
weather with an estimated
attendance of at least 1200 people.
Allambee Park was full of local
families and also from people who
had travelled distance to
participate in this community
service.
The service was opened by Lions
Club President John Duke who
welcomed all and spoke about the
30 year history of this community
event that started with a very small
group of mainly Lions Club
members, to the large number of
people in attendance today that
truly signifies the importance of
the Anzac Day remembrance
tradition and also the growth and
support of residents in the local
community area.
The MC for the service was again
very ably conducted by Daniel
Wilson, Deputy Principal of the
Valentine Public School.
The event programme commenced
with a short march into Allambee
Park lead by WW2, Korea, Vietnam
returned veterans and service
reservists with Army and Air Force
serving personnel and family
member representatives also
leading the march. The Lake
Macquarie Winds Band provided
the marching music with local
school children, scouts and Air
Force Cadets also being well
represented in the march.
The catafalque party was again
provided by the 8th Combat
Support Battalion who also
provided an excellent static display
of Army vehicles for all to inspect
and ask questions of the army
representatives.
The service Commemorative Youth
Address was presented by Shaye
Kleyjan from Warners Bay High
School and a Poem was spoken by
Joel Harvey a cadet representing
the Belmont Air league. The
Remembrance Hymn was sung by
a Local School Children’s Choir, led
by Caitlyn Carr.
During the solemn wreath laying
ceremony, Piper Dennis Browning,
again played beautiful bagpipe
music that was appreciated by the
(Continued on page 12)
crowd in attendance.
The speaking of The Ode was
then joined in by all followed by
the playing of The Last Post and
one minute’s silence. The Rouse
was then played as the flag was
slowly raised on the flagpole. A
special thank you to the Lake
Macquarie Winds band member
for this presentation.
The New Zealand National
Anthem was again beautifully
sung by Richard Eriwata from
Newcastle Maori Club. Richard
asked all to join in the singing
that was conducted in both Maori
and English versions.
The service concluded with all
joining to sing the Australian
National Anthem.

Lakers Low-Down
Hi there fellow Lakers, well what a
past month we have had with the
final stages of the pennant season
& the biggest highlight the comple-
tion of the men’s blue ribbon Major
Singles Championship. Here is our 1
grade member Joel Roche’s
(PANDA) review of the final.
PANDAS REVIEW
MAJOR SINGLES FINAL
Well where do we start what a great
game we witnessed this on Sunday
5/5/19 in windy wet conditions.
Both players started slowly search-
ing for weight and line and neither
having great success but Gov
adapting to it earlier. Gov quickly
jumping out to a 7-1 advantage
Hutcho finally finding some touch
and brought the score into 13-9
from there on in Gov showing his
dominance moving out to 19-9 and
heaping plenty of pressure on
Hutcho, forcing Gov to draw on his
arsenal of shots. Hutcho missing
plenty of free kick shots could have
been much closer to Gov having
trailed the jack away from himself
for 1 instead of 3 and quite a few
others although it may not have
changed the result but that may
have boosted confidence in Hutcho
to possibly making a charge. Gov
then leading 23-12 never looked
back conceding only 1 more shot
on his way to a total of 9 major sin-
gles wins!!!
Don't discount the effort put in by
Hutcho as Gov being one of the
classiest singles players around, i
predict him to not be sitting in 2
grade much longer if his form keeps
improving and results following
keep an eye on this up and comer
and of course our talisman David
Govan go and add another district
title to your resume and bring it
home for the Lakers!!!
Congratulations to both players on
a fantastic effort! Gov
Valentine has reached the playoff in
the midweek 1 Grade & 5 Grade
and will contest the playoffs on the
22nd May with the 1 Grade at Wa-
terboard & the 5 Grade at Raymond
Terrace, great job men very proud
of you all, lets give it our best shot
and bring home a flag for Valen-
tine!!!
Saturday pennants are looking
The Fishing Club had its outing for
April on the weekend of 12,13 &
14. What fantastic weather was
turned on and this got plenty of
members fishing. 19 senior mem-
bers, including 3 ladies, along with
3 junior members fished, making it
one of our better weekend partici-
pation rates.
John Donkin and Paul Birt fished
Newcastle Harbour to chase their
favoured Luderick. They caught
plenty and John once again looks
to be the one to beat for the larg-
est fish in this category. He caught
an absolute monster Luderick at
1.4+ kgs. Jason Wood and Shae
Hartigan decided a nightime fish
for Mulloway in the Lake was the
way to go and were rewarded with
a great catch of snapper along
with Shae getting her first Mullo-
way at 80+cms. Getting that first
Mulloway is the hardest but once
bitten by that bug it's hard not to
try and keep fishing for them. Mark
and Trent Nuemann had a great
session fishing the shallow water
for bream on soft plastics. Both
caught some quality fish. David Birt
and his two boys Matt and Nathan,
along with Emma Wallace, were
again chasing the elusive Mulloway
in Newcastle Harbour. With the
bag limit of only 1 fish each there
were plenty of tag and releases
completed for the weekend. David
and Matt having a particularly busy
day on the Friday afternoon get-
ting 8 mulloway and some big tai-
lor. Danny Ratcliffe took his grand-
son Jayden fishing on his cruiser
and it looks as if Danny has taught
Jayden too well with Jayden well
and truly outfishing him. Among
other fish Jayden caught a great
2.5+ kg Flathead and was decided-
ly pleased with himself. Neil Cooley
got a mixed bag of whiting, bream
and flathead in the lake. Dave
McMorrow fished the beach and
also caught some whiting and
bream. Jake Blackburn and Tristen
Willis fished the lake with Tristen
out fishing Jake for a mixed bag.
Great to see young Stella Torrence
giving the Sub-Junior boys a run
for their money as she also caught
a mixed bag. Stella is very keen on
her fishing and getting better each
year. Mitch Birt tried his luck off-
shore and got a few dolphin fish.
Apparently there are heaps of
these out wide and there are even
