• This red varietal disappeared from European

vineyards in the mid-19th century and

reappeared among Chile’s Merlot vines a

hundred years later.

• The deepest, darkest, purplest of all red

grapes needs a long growing season to reach

its fullest potential.

• Rich in berry fruits and spice (think

blackberries and black pepper), with smooth,

well-rounded tannins, making this a very

pleasing and easy to drink varietal.

CARMÉNÈRE

Carménère

Charmed by the Chilean Sun, found new home in the naturally protected

Chilean Valleys.

• A noble variety planted extensively in Médoc, near Bordeaux

• Key component of the appellation s great wines until phylloxera devastated Europe in 1860.

• This plague along with poor soil and climate conditions, characterized by early autumn rains, made Carmenere disappear from the region.

• Carmenere vines were brought along with many other grapes

varieties, and planted emulating the French Chateaux principle: intermingled with other grape varieties in a single vineyard.

CARMÉNÈRE

CARMÉNÈRE

 The flagship varietal of Chile

 Carménère Grapes Differentiating Characteristics

Carménère ripens 2 to 3 weeks later than Merlot and has a lower yield - has different leaf shape and even color

Its leaves turn crimson (carmine) before dropping

Peumo as the best terroir for Carmenere in Chile

The cool sea air is partially blocked by the Coastal Mountains, although it

finds its way inland by following the course of the transversal river valleys.

During the day, sea breezes carried by the cold Humboldt Current penetrate

inland, and each night, cold air descends from the snow- covered peaks of the

Andes.

The beautiful vineyards of Casillero del Diablo are home to some of the finest wines in the

world. But few outsiders know the dark secret that lies beneath them. For the locals say that in the depths of the cellar lives the Devil himself. A tale so infamous, they named the wine Casillero

del Diablo, the Devil’s Cellar.

King Felipe V of Spain

Marques de Casa Concha was created in tribute to the title conferred in 1716 by King Felipe V of Spain

upon the Concha y Toro family.

Marques de Casa Concha was launched in the mid-70’s

In 1998 Marcelo Papa became the winemaker for all

Marques wines.

A new philosophy was introduced. Each Marques

wine would come from a single specific vineyard and it would be a limited production wine

The 1999 Cabernet and Merlot both receive their first 90 point ratings from Wine Spectator.

Since 1999, Marques has become a 90 Point brand.
