Costa Rica Adventure 2011

Costa Rica Essentials

The catch-all-phrase, "Pura Vida" reflects the relaxed lifestyle and enviable attitude of the Costa Rican people. Translated to "Pure Life," this slang term blends the spirits of "Let the good times roll, Hang loose and Don't worry, be happy."

Costa Rica is a fascinating international destination with authentic, undiscovered attractions bursting with wildlife and activities for adventurers of every interest and skill level. Few places on Earth contain such wildlife and environmental diversity where a short ride or walk presents different habitat, weather and opportunities. Vacationing in Costa Rica can be described as visiting the best amusement park because of the variety of options in so beautiful a setting without the long lines. Whether enjoying your favorite pastimes or trying something new, Costa Rica provides a special background.

Geography: Costa Rica is about the size of West Virginia with 20,000 square miles. It is located where North and South America meet in Central America.

People: Costa Ricans are known as "Ticos." They are a proud people progressing independently from colonial days as a backwater in the Spanish Empire. Today, their genuine friendliness and commitments to peace, democracy, education and health care are world-renowned.

Language: Spanish, but English is widely spoken.

Government: A model democracy committed to peace without a military.

Economy: Costa Rica's stable history, competitive investment policies and well-educated workforce are attracting foreign investment and diversifying the economy. Tourism remains an important foreign exchange source as do banana, coffee and other agricultural exports.

Costa Rica Adventure 2011

Utilities: Tap water, ice and blender drinks are safe to drink, however, use common sense in the most remote areas. Electricity is 110 volts AC, the same as the United States.

Entry Requirements: All U.S. citizens including children and infants require passports to enter Costa Rica. U.S. passports must be valid at least 6 months or longer beyond the dates of your trip. We recommend that you carry a photocopy of the passport and leave the original in a safe place while traveling about. Immunizations: None are required for travel to Costa Rica. If you have specific health concerns, you should speak to your personal physician before traveling.

General Climate: Costa Rica enjoys mild, subtropical weather with little variety year-round. Temperatures are nearly constant all year with variations related to elevation. The lowlands average around 80-90 F, the Central Valley about 72 while it can dip below 50 on the mountains at night. The Dry Season is December-April and the Green Season is May-November. The Green Season brings late afternoon or evening showers, fewer crowds and lower prices; it is a great time to explore!

Currency: The national currency is the colon (es) which floats in relation to the U.S. dollar. Dollars can be exchanged at banks, exchange houses, international airports and most hotels. Credit cards are widely accepted although occasionally subject to a service fee. Many smaller establishments only accept cash. Up to $50 worth of colones can be converted back to dollars upon departure. ATM's are becoming more popular but will not be found in remote areas.

Tipping: Good service deserves to be rewarded. Don't forget to tip tour guides, drivers, bellboys and maids. Restaurant bills include a 10% gratuity but leave an extra tip for good service.

Taxes: There is an airport departure tax of around $26 per person. Hotels include a 13% sales and 3.39% tourism tax on room charges. Transportation: Costa Rica is served by numerous airlines from the United States. Reasonably priced small, propeller or twin-engine planes service domestic destinations. Driving can be a challenging endeavor due to rugged terrain, poor road conditions and a "competitive" atmosphere. We do not recommend driving at night, especially on isolated roads.

Safety: Costa Rica is a generally safe destination but petty crime/thievery does exist, especially in San Jose. Common sense and being alert to surroundings and scams is effective crime prevention. We recommend keeping a low profile and leaving trappings of affluence at home to avoid becoming a target. Do not leave things in unprotected cars, not even in the trunk.

Costa Rica Adventure 2011

La Fortuna / Arenal Volcano

Located in northern Costa Rica, the Arenal area is home to the largest active volcano in Costa Rica, the Arenal Volcano. The Arenal Volcano is a destination for scientists and tourists alike as it erupts on an average of 41 times a day. Slight changes in altitude create unique microclimates and ecosystems throughout this region, making it home to a variety of exotic species.

During the day the volcano can be seen steaming and spitting smoke and at night it can become a spectacular liquid fireworks show. The heat from the volcano has created several hot springs, some with views of the volcano.

Arenal and the surrounding area is a great base for adventure touring including canopy ziplines, hanging bridges, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, caving, and fishing on Lake Arenal.

Climate: Dry Dec-Apr, Green May-Nov Temp: 60-90º F depending on elevation

But suddenly the path ends and before you like a verdant mirage unfolds the lush grounds and inviting splendor of Parador Resort & Spa, Costa Rica’s premium Manuel Antonio hotel.

Bienvenidos. Welcome to your “home away from home” in magical Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

Perched high above the sweeping Central Pacific coastline on twelve acres of tropical rainforest once inhabited by the Quepoa Indians, Hotel Parador is a secluded luxury beach hotel adjacent to the stunning sheltered cove of Playa Biezanz and just minutes from Manuel Antonio National Park, the neighboring fishing village of Quepos, and the local airport.

Manuel Antonio Optional Tours

Naranjo River Whitewater Rafting May – December

The wild and ever-changing Naranjo River White Water Rafting challenge is recommended for physically fit adventure seekers and experienced rafters who are familiar with Class III and IV rapids.

On this high-octane, half-day adventure, the trip begins when the Naranjo River drops steeply from the Costa Rican mountains and charges though pristine jungle gorges, then winds around rocky curves to take you on a wild, adventurous ride back to sea level waters. While your internationally-trained, bilingual guides and safety kayakers work with you to navigate this exciting river, you’ll pass by (rapidly) stunning farmland, working cattle ranches, and beautiful African Palm Plantations.

Unlike the Savegre River Adventure, the Naranjo River Rafting Trip packs all its punches in a 7 mile ride that keeps your adrenaline level high for several hours. Water levels can rise rapidly on this Costa Rican river treasure, especially during the rainy season (May-October), which definitely brings the difficulty level up for any experienced rafter. After an adrenaline-kicking

Price: $65 pp Time: 8 am or 11:30 am

We strongly recommend that adventurers (adults and children over age 10) be physically fit and prepared for Class IV rapids. Wear or bring water sandals or sturdy water shoes, a bathing suit, sunscreen, bug spray, a towel, and if possible a change of clothes.

Includes: Round trip transportation, bilingual guides, safety kayakers, all equipment needed, security, snacks and drinks.

trip, enjoy local snacks and refreshments before heading back to reality, well, back to Manuel Antonio anyway. For another kicking experience, try our full day Savegre River Rafting adventure next!

If you become addicted to our ever-changing adventures out here, you just might have to come back.

Tips

Come prepared to have an adventure. Be prepared to get wet. Wear sturdy water shoes or sandals. Leave your camera or valuables at your hotel or in the security van – you won’t have

time to take pictures. Ask us to provide a photographer who can put your pictures on CD for you with added

extras of our national treasure, Manuel Antonio. Be surprised to learn a lot about Costa Rica’s tropical flora and fauna. Pick your river wisely – more Class IV action comes from the Naranjo and children might

not enjoy that adventure just yet.

Savegre River Whitewater Rafting

All Year Long

This adventurous, family-friendly, full-day trip is a unique white water river rafting adventure with lots of “perks”.

Of course you can expect, as the Manuel Antonio specialist, that our world-class, internationally-trained, bilingual guides and safety kayakers will expertly guide and teach you how to navigate through this exciting river experience. But you and your group of fellow rafters start slowly and build your way up to an unforgettable yet manageable adventure that will leave you either begging for more – so go on the Naranjo River high-octane trip next – or either leave completely satisfied and happy that you experienced one of Costa Rica’s famous rivers, the Savegre.

Starting with a 4x4 ride into the “wilds” of Costa Rica’s tropical jungle with breathtaking scenery of more remote areas of the Savegre, your journey begins at “Silencio”. This is a little local village of thatched roof dwellings where you can enjoy a typical Tico breakfast after a “bumpy road” journey, yet before you paddle down the Savegre. Make sure you make your reservations for lunch, and don’t forget to meander through the beautiful flora and fauna of the surrounding

African Palm Plantations before you head off into the winding mountains to start the rafting leg of your journey.

The Savegre River provides Class II, III and some IV rapids that are manageable in sturdy rafts that accommodate 2 to 6 people comfortably. Our guides stop at locally known swimming spots and breathtaking waterfalls, if the rafters want a break from paddling, and there is always time to enjoy the abundant variety of wildlife along the river. On most trips, rafters will observe egrets, osprey, toucans, parrots, kingfishers, cormorants, and many other species local to this protected area of the tropical rain forest. After a steady 13 mile trip down the river, we wind our way back to the little village of “Silencio” where a gladly awaited hot lunch “Tico Style” and local refreshments are waiting. Once fed, happy and well-traveled, our now experienced Savegre River rafters spend a leisurely trip home driving back to Manuel Antonio, to ponder on continuing a rafting experience on the Naranjo River or to savor the experiences of your day just past.

Tips

time to take pictures. Be surprised to learn a lot about Costa Rica’s tropical flora and fauna. Pick your river wisely – more Class IV action comes from the Naranjo and children might

not enjoy that adventure just yet.

Tour 1 - Pacific Ocean Offshore Fishing Trips

Quepos, Costa Rica and it’s offshore fishing grounds are world famous for the numerous records (fly and conventional tackle) that have been set and the large numbers of fish it can produce during the peak seasons. Sailfish are the name of the game here and are available year around with December through April being the prime season. 30 to 40 fish days are common during those peak warmer months when numerous Sails can be

seen free-jumping and resting on the surface.

Blue, Black and Stripped Marlin are common in the local waters but are more seasonally caught on their North- South migration routes. March and April and November and December see more Marlin than other months but they have been caught every month of the year.

Dolphinfish (Dorado or Mahi Mahi) thrive in these waters but are usually unseen from June to September. Wahoo are a strictly seasonal fish that occupies these waters during the warmer months from December to April.

Rates for a full day of offshore fishing range from $850 to $1200 based on the number of anglers and the size of the boat desired.

Tour 2 - Pacific Ocean Inshore Fishing Trips

The inshore waters of the Central Pacific coast are some of the most abundant sport fisheries in the world. Literally thousands of Roosterfish populate the area and are caught year around. There can be so much action with Gallos (Roosters) that often clients prefer to target other species after hours of battling these hard fighting “brawlers”.

Price:

Half and full day trips for 1 to 3 people run from $350 and $450 for the pangas and $450 to $650 for the sport fishers

Page 29: Club Encompasse Adventures Join us on an …fishing village of Quepos, and the local airport. A multiple World Travel Awards recipient, Hotel Parador is distinguished by its commitment

The IGFA all tackle world record for Snook (a 58lb. Pacific Black) and the record for Pacific Backfin both came from the local waters and the limits of those records are being challenged frequently. Casting over submerged rocks and reefs can produce various Jacks and up to five different kinds of Snapper including: Colorado, Mullet, Pacific Dog, Spotted Rose and Yellow. When the waters are warmer (December through May) and baitfish (Sardines, Mullet, etc.) are found in tight schools or “baitballs” the action can be fast and furious with the predators species that patrol the perimeters. Usually the baitfish reach their mature size during the summer months from November to May and then hatch sporadically throughout the rest of the year.

These predators/sport fish include: Barracuda (Pacific and Mexican), Pacific Bonito, Stripped Corvina, Jack Crevalle(Common and Pacific), Dolphinfish (aka Mahi Mahi or Dorado), Milkfish, Mackerel (Sierra, Chub and Spanish), Needlefish, Black Skipjack, Trevally (Bigeye and Bluefin), Trippletail, Tuna (Yellowfin, Bigeye and Skipjack), Wahoo.

Inshore trips are done either in basic open hull pangas or customized center console sport fishers with T-tops. The smaller, lighter more maneuverable pangas are normally used when the action is right in the surf and the sportfishers are used when greater distances need to be traveled.

Half and full day trips for 1 to 3 people run from $350 and $450 for the pangas and $450 to $650 for the sport fishers.

Half-day trips are done only when short distances need to be covered to get to good fishing and therefore are subject to seasonal limitations.

Tour 3 - Estuaries Fishing

The estuaries of the Central Pacific Coast are some of the largest in Central America and are excellent fisheries for a variety of saltwater and brackish water species. Snook (Common, Pacific Black and Pacific Blackfin), Snapper (Pacific Dog, Colorado, Mullet and Yellow), Common and Pacific Jack Crevalle, Longjaw Leatherjack, Jewfish and Roosterfish make up the sport fish population, some in permanent residence others

coming in search of food when given access to these Mangrove and hardwood lined waters.

Tides rise and fall from 7 to 10 feet on the coast here so these massive estuaries are in a constant state of change bringing many of the inshore baitfish and predator species in and out every 12 hours so timing is everything when fishing.

All trips are scheduled according to the tides and seasons. The estuaries are best fished in the dry months from December to May and then weather permitting the rest of the year. Estuary trips are done with lightweight and pangas.
