April showers bring May flowers and many reasons to be joyful and to celebrate. We’ve successfully completed GT Global Screening and MSA Science for grade 5. We’ve also enjoyed the presence and participation of our Cloverly families at Family Heritage and Book Fair Night. We look forward to upcoming events happening in May.

Kindergarten OrientationThank you to all the parents who participated in kindergarten orientation. Our 70+ children and families commented about the outstanding hospitality of our staff and parents. Additional packets are available in the front office for those parents who could not attend. Parent Input for Class PlacementParents, please be on the lookout for written correspondence that will help us to plan and to prepare for the 2013-14 school year. Return to Cloverly and Class Placement Parent/Guardian Input are two important communications that have gone home to parents and should be returned to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Additional forms are in the main office. Happy Mother’s DayHappy Mother’s Day to all of our amazing Cloverly mothers! Your families are very fortunate to have the guidance and nurturance you provide and demonstrate through your loving actions. Thanks for sharing your “pride and joy” with us each and every day. I thank you whole-heartedly for volunteering your time at Cloverly to support our instructional program. Parent/Principal CoffeesWe are hosting another round of Parent/Principal Coffees on Wednesday, May 8, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. for PEP and grades

K-2 and from 1:30 to 3 p.m. for Autism and grades 3-5. Our discussions will focus on changes for next year, including but not limited to, staffing and student enrollment changes and details about the installation

of Curriculum 2.0 for grades 4 and 5. We will also use that time to listen and share ideas for upgrades to our instructional program or to answer and address any questions or concerns.Lost and FoundOur Lost and Found is full and overflowing. If your child is

missing any clothing items, it’s likely that it is our Lost and Found. If clothing items aren’t picked up by Friday, May 17, they will be donated. Thanks so much for your cooperation and understanding. Final ThoughtsAs the school year draws to a close and the weather gets warmer, we’re asking parents to continue to encourage your children to complete homework, projects and assignments. Encourage positive interactions with peers and adherence to school rules in all settings, including the bus. Remind your children that we do not allow toys, especially electronic games and cell phones, at school. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, students must attend school every day. We must continue to work in partnership–parents and school staff–to ensure momentum until the last day of school.

Hello Cloverly Families!

Spring has arrived, the grass is finally growing, the kids are playing baseball again, we’re busy making our family summer plans, and there’s so much to do. Every spring gets busier and busier, and this spring is no exception.

Before I begin with the rundown of the upcoming events, I need to mention a few things from April. First of all, a gigantic thank you to Diane Pelton and all of her minions for putting on the best Cloverly Variety Show ever. Thank you to Jim Toomey for spending a morning drawing his Sherman’s Lagoon comics in front of the entire school. We now have some budding cartoonists because of his demonstration. Thank you to Susan Quinn, Tracy Kiras and Angela Edwards for running another fabulous Book Fair. And thanks to everyone involved in the best Heritage Night I’ve ever been to. What a wonderful night, thank you!

May isn’t any slower, so buckle-up, buttercup, ’cause here we go: The first event in May is Bingo Night. Thanks to Wendy Clifford for organizing this fun night for another year. Don’t miss it! You can find details here: http://www.cloverlypta.org/?p=20307.

The first full week of May is Staff Appreciation Week! On Tuesday, May 7, your PTA will be providing the teachers with lunch. Then on Thursday, May 9, your PTA is serving up breakfast. During the week we’re planning to leave nice “thank you”s and gifts in their mailboxes. And we’re asking the kids to write up thank you notes which we’ll display throughout the school. For

all of the information–and for a way to volunteer for this rewarding assignment–visit http://www.cloverlypta.org/?p=23659.

On Tuesday, May 7, please join us for the monthly General PTA meeting in the All-Purpose Room at 7 p.m. This month we’ll be voting for next year’s PTA officers. So come and cast your vote! Child care is always provided.

Field Day is May 15-17 and Mr. Lyons would love your help! Visit http://www.cloverlypta.org/?p=23047 for more information.

The following week is the Science Fair. This is a great event to show off your budding scientists! The Science Fair will be May 22 and here are the details: http://www.cloverlypta.org/?p=23049.

The granddaddy of all events is Sunday, June 2–the biennial Spring Fair and Silent Auction! This is your PTA’s largest fundraiser and our school’s biggest event. Visit www.cloverlypta.org to stay up-to-date on all of the fun plans!

And I want to welcome the incoming class of kindergarteners. I had the opportunity to meet all of the new families at the kindergarten orientation a few weeks ago. Seeing all of the bright shining new faces at the orientation has been one of the most rewarding events of the year for me.

Welcome to your new community, welcome to your new journey, and welcome to the Cloverly PTA.

Babysitting provided. Come one, come all!

David  Bogart

Wendy Macan is a reading teacher in the mornings, working with first- and second-graders, and a teacher of English for speakers of other languages, or ESOL, in the afternoons, also to first- and second-graders. She’s been at Cloverly for four years, with Montgomery County Public Schools for 10 years, and a teacher for 20 years (she started with Prince George’s County Public Schools). A New Jersey native, Mrs. Macan has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from West Virginia University.

Mrs. Macan’s move to Cloverly was almost an accident, and she’s happy with the outcome. “I taught at Kemp Mill Elementary School 10 years ago with an ESOL teacher named Lailaa Jazouli. She then moved on to Cloverly and was an ESOL teacher here for a few years. When she left to go on long-term leave, she recommended that I teach here,” she explains. “I haven’t regretted my decision at all. I was ready to teach in a school where achievement was a focus, and students are driven.” Mrs. Macan has a great day when she sees examples of students meeting the goals and objectives she sets for them.

Mrs. Macan’s greatest professional accomplishment is having taught reading recovery for eight years. Reading recovery is a one-on-one reading intervention program for first graders who are at risk of not meeting the benchmark by year’s end. The goal is to get them reading and writing at grade level by the end of 12 to 20 weeks of 30-minute daily lessons. “It was an amazing professional development experience.” Mrs. Macan also is proud of the personal sacrifice she made to obtain National Board Certification five years ago. Ms. Macan works hard even when she’s not at work, since she's the mother of twin 3-year-old boys, but she thinks about making time for her own interests. “Since my boys were born, I don’t really have much time to focus on me. But given free time, I would spend it doing digital scrapbooking, reading, or shopping,” she says.  One responsibility that she's not ready for is having a

pet, even though she is a former dog owner. “We’re going to wait until the boys BEG us, and maybe not even then. I had a dog for 15 years. It’s a huge responsibility that I’m not ready for!”

Tell us about your family.  I am one of three children. My sister Debbie is a paraeducator in the autism program here at Cloverly. My younger brother Jeff specializes in computers at the Smithsonian Institution. My husband Michael works as a research librarian at the U.S. Naval Academy, and we’ve been married five years. He is also from New Jersey but we met in D.C.

What are the best and worst jobs you’ve ever had?  I would probably have to say the best job I ever had was teaching reading recovery. It was really challenging even though the teaching was 1:1, but so rewarding and valuable to the child. The worst job: Substitute teaching PE at RICA-Southern Maryland High School when I first moved to Maryland 23 years ago. It was just one day, but I was only a couple of years older than some of the students, and they were emotionally disturbed. I was not equipped to do it.

What was the first concert you attended, and who's your favorite band now?  Donnie Osmond and the Bay City Rollers at the Garden State Arts Center. Vivid memories. Now, I am forced to listen to the soundtrack to Thomas, the Tank Engine, in the car with my boys, although at home we’re trying to cultivate a liking of Van Morrison.
