The new county youth council met this month and the new 4-H year is beginning as well. The first week of October is National 4-H Week and October 15 is our Open House for new prospective members. Project Committees are also seeing some members step down and new people join. (There’s still time to apply, see article inside.) Check out the newsletter for more new opportunities!

Record Books Due This Month
YIKES!!! It’s time to get your records pulled together. While project work draws to a close for the 4-H year
and thoughts are fresh, take time to put your records together. It’s much easier to get them done now
before homework and other school activities compete for your time.
Records are due to your club leader at the September meeting. Cash awards are
given by the youth council for each project record. A Gold Project Award receives
$5, a Silver Project Award $3, and a Bronze Project Award $2. These are presented
at the Fall Awards Program on November 22.
Record Keeping Forms can be found here. Each applicant also needs a record keep-
ing application form with the book for the leader to verify meeting attendance,
community service work, and an educational presentation. Click on the application hotlink or stop by the
office to pick up a copy. Record book covers are also available for purchase at the office. If you have any
questions, please give us a call at 336-3488.
It’s also time to submit for club officer & community service awards. The applications for those are hot
linked to the respective award category or can be picked up at the office.

OUR VISION A WORLD IN WHICH YOUTH AND ADULTS LEARN, GROW, AND WORK TOGETHER AS CATALYSTS FOR POSTIVE CHANGE
Do You Know The History of 4-H Week?
National 4-H Week began as an outgrowth of World War II. Following Pearl Harbor, a 4-H Mobilization Week was planned as a means of focusing the attention of 4-H members on what they might do for national defense. The Federal Extension Service initiated National 4-H Mobilization Week which was observed annually in 1942, 1943 and 1944. Since then, it has been observed as National 4-H Week.
The focus during National 4-H Mobilization Week was on encouraging 4-H members to produce foods needed by rural men and women in the armed services; enlist as many young people eligible for mem-bership as possible in all rural areas, particularly those living on farms, in some phase of the 4-H Club war program; to report on 4-H Club work which had already been started in terms of how it would contribute to family production and conservation goals and how it would contribute toward the total amount needed by rural men and women now in the armed services.
After the war, the National 4-H Mobilization Week became National 4-H Week. The purpose of the Week centered on (1) acquainting the public with the new, enlarged 4-H program, and the many ways young people may take part, (2) encourage more youth to join 4-H, (3) urge more men and women to volunteer as 4-H leaders, (4) recognize parents' contribution to 4-H and strengthen their cooperation, and (5) report the year's 4-H accomplishments and plan for the year ahead.
What Do You and Your Club Plan to Do During National 4-H Week?
Donate to a local food pantry • Wear your 4-H T-shirt to school • Decorate a bulletin board at school and/or make a school announcement • Hold a 4-H Trivia Contest at school or on the radio • Decorate a store front in town • Help with classroom recruiting • Help with the 4-H Open House • Thank business sponsors & supporters • Thank your club leaders • Encourage others to join 4-H • Bring a friend to a club meeting •
Lead a service project in your community • Challenge yourself and others to try something new in 4-H
National 4-H Week…. October 4-10
4-H Open House As a part of 4-H Week Celebrations, staff and youth council members will be visiting 4th and 5th grade classrooms in the county to share about 4-H and to invite youth to attend an Open House at the Extension Office on Thursday, October 15th from 3:30—6:00 p.m.
New members do not have to attend the open house to join 4-H, but we encourage them to come if possible on the 15th to find out more about 4-H and to get one-on-one help with enrollment processes. The Open House is a
come and go format for youth and parents to get questions answered and enrollment forms completed.
If you as a 4-H member, leader or parent would like to help with the Open House we would love it! We plan to serve a light refreshment, have some coloring activities for younger siblings, have Extension Choice Awards from fair on display, and have some work tables for families to complete paperwork and ask questions. Give us a call at 336-3488 or just stop by if you’re interested and able to help on October 15th.

I PLEDGE MY HEAD TO CLEARER THINKING, MY HEART TO GREATER LOYALTY, MY HANDS TO LARGER SERVICE,
AND MY HEALTH TO BETTER LIVING, FOR MY CLUB, MY COMMUNITY, MY COUNTRY, AND MY WORLD.
Committee Volunteer Opportunities
ALL VOLUNTEERS are invited to a regional volunteer training on October 24 at the Prairie Heritage Center
located between Peterson and Sutherland. This will be a time to share best practices with one another as
well as learn more about positive youth development methods. Watch your emails for more information.
There will be a club leader meeting and training on November 19th from 6:30—8:30 pm in the Community
Building. The focus of the meeting/training will be on the “Heart of Community” and looking at how to in-
volve 4-H clubs in community activities. This is a statewide training and happening a bit later in the year for
us. As such, we are asking leaders to collect record books, officer award application, and club community
service applications at September Club meetings and to deliver them to the office by October 2nd. This will
give time for them to be evaluated and awards ordered for the November 22nd Fall Awards Program at
Corner Lanes in Spirit Lake.
Club Leader & Volunteer Trainings
With the new 4-H Year comes some new opportunities to be involved in 4-H as a youth or adult. Several of
our project committees have openings and applications available. This hotlink will give you a complete two-
page job description and application, or stop by the office to pick up a copy.
The Executive Committee, comprised of the 4 Fair Board Officers and 4 Extension Council Officers, reviews
and approves applications. They also set up the guidelines and terms for committee members. Each project
committee may have up to 11 members with at least 2 of those spaces reserved for youth. There is a limit
of one family member per household. Term limits are also set in staggered three year increments. Those
wishing to continue on a committee after 3 years must reapply. All committee members have voting privi-
leges. Attendance and assistance at committee meetings/trainings, project workshops, and fair-related ac-
tivities is expected.
Committee Volunteer Position Openings Include:

Horse —2 Youth and 2 Adult

Important 4-H Dates
The image below has been made into a magnet and will be distributed at club meetings, fair board and
extension council meetings. We hope you find this a helpful tool in remembering important 4-H dates in the
new year. We have extra magnets in the office if you need more or want to share with friends and family.
4 “Sampler Saturday 4-H Workshops” are just that… a chance to sample what 4-H has to offer. We’re in the
process of designing four project-based workshops for the year, plus our summer camps.
If you have topics or projects you would like to learn more about at a workshop, please let us know.
