And now, my good friend, Mr. Ken Sharabok, has inquired as to ''what is the proper tempering procedure for this project?" Well, being a practiced blacksmith, knbwing something about tempering, and having raised two babies, I feel that I am eminently qualified to offer assistance with this unusual request. First of all, you must prepare a special heat treating flux bath for this item. The formula (no pun intended) for this flux bath is rather unusual, but very simple. Into a one-quart aluminum or cast iron sauce pan (without lid), pour in one cup of sugar. Now add one table- spoon of water and stir this around in the pot until thoroughly mixed. Next, clean the teething ring thoroughly and dry. Bury the teeth- ing ring in the flux mixture, making sure all surfaces are covered with this bath mix. At 275OF, bake this item in its flux bath in your kitchen oven for approximately 62% minutes and 13 seconds-or until the flux soak bath has melted into a thick crystalline consistency. At this point, remove the teething ring from the pot with tongs. Now, the next step is the most crucial, and the juncture where the optimum tempering occurs! DO NOT QUENCH in oil or water! You AIR cool it. That's right, you simply hold the ring with tongs in front of a fan until cool, turning it all the while, so that as much flux coating as possible will adhere to all surfaces. After sufficient cooling, this item will be ready for service. By the way, no need to use your Rock- well on this to test for hardness-take my word for it.

THE APRIL STATEWIDE MEETING Clyde Payton

The April Statewide Meeting was held at Clyde and Vi Payton1s shop near Monticello, Florida, on Saturday, April 11, 1992. We had an excel- lent turnout-43 people signed the attendance sheet, and I'm sure there were some who attended who did not sign in.

Our demonstrators were Jay Reakirt from Albany, Georgia, and Pat Imbimbo from Tallahassee. Jay demonstrated the making of several popu- lar items that sell ''like hot cakesw at the shows that he attends. Jay is a mighty fine demonstrator, who gives excellent explanations and invites questions and discussions at every step. Of equal interest was his Civil War forge and many hand tools, all of which he made from scratch. He hauled all of this equipment down on his trailer and used it in his demonstration. Everyone was extremely pleased with Jay's demo, and I've received several phone calls expressing appreciation for his appearance.

Pat Imbimbo demonstrated Colonial shoe making, also on equipment that was handmade to represent the late 1600s. Pat was even dressed for his demonstration wearing clothes and shoes of the same period. We all enjoyed Pat's demo and lecture on leather working and shoemaking-maybe we can get him to do this again at Barberville?

This was a rather warm Saturday, and we had about three good show- ers throughout the day, but the new shed, which I recently built, pro- vided adequate shelter. I especially thank J. C. Hawkins and Jim Corbet for coming in on Friday and helping with the setup. A whopping good lunch was prepared by Vi Payton, Gloria Corbet, and Maggi Rubio while Eleanor Hawkins rendered appropriate supervision.

We appreciate new member Glenn Hodges attending. He drove all the way down from Nashville, Georgia. Mr. David Reddy, who is one of the directors of the Steven Foster State park at White Springs, Florida, also attended this statewide meeting-David is interested in FABA estab- lishing the period blacksmith shop at this park.

We had eight FABA Board members in attendance, and at noon a short business meeting was convened by President Tico Rubio, where several items of business were concluded. We made $85.00 from the buck-in-the- bucket drawing, which will go into the general treasury. We also sold $140.00 worth of tickets for the Sandia Gas Forge drawing, which will be at the State Conference in October.

Vi and I appreciate having everyone here at the PAYTON FORGE, and we hope to do it again next year.

NORTHWEST REGION'S JUNE 13 MEETING: TALLAHASSEE Clyde Payton, Regional Coordinator

The northeast region's June meeting will be Saturday, June 13, at Jerry and Tycee Grice's home shop .(not the business) near Tallahassee. See map on page 3.

We have a good program planned; Jerry will demonstrate chiseling and repousse design work in ferrous and non-ferrous metals using his handmade tools and his treadle hammer. Last October Jerry attended a workshop on this taught by George Dixon, the head blacksmith at the Samuel Yellin Iron Works, at the Sloss Furnace Museum in Birmingham, AL.

Jerry now has his humongous power hammer operational and he will demonstrate forging some heavy stuff. He has just finished up his brand new blacksmith shop in his backyard, and it is a nice, spacious place for a good meeting.

We'll make something for the October FABA auction, so bring your favorite hand tools and portable forge, if you have one. Bring a sack lunch; cold drinks will be furnished.

MINUTES OF THE APRIL BOARD MEETING Roger S. Stuart

The quarterly meeting was held at Clyde Payton's shop on the 11th of April, '92. Board members present were Steve Bloom, J. C. Hawkins, Pat Imbimbo, Clyde Payton, Lewis Riggleman, Bill Roberts, Tico Rubio, and Roger Stuart. The meeting was called to order by Tico. There was no new business. Bill Roberts spoke briefly on the progress of the ticket sales for the gas forges.

The buck-in-the-bucket was held. A good participation, $85.00 was collected.

A short treasurer's report was given. See page 8. Pat Imbimbo made the announcement that anyone who wanted to demon-

strate at Fort Clinch at Fernandina Beach could do so by contacting him. They furnish the period costumes and all the iron and coal. All the demonstrator has to do is beat hot iron. For more information, call Pat at (904) 488-4891.

The meeting was adjourned and the demonstration by Jay Reakirt continued.

NEWS FROM THE SOUTHEAST Pete Brandenburg

I I The southeast region met on May 16 at Anne and Ray Reynolds' house

in Royal Palm Beach. Attending were Mary & Pete Brandenburg; Pat Bride; I Bill Burridge; Donna & Joe Farina; Bonnie, Dale, Casey, & Megan Kipp; Ed

Leopard; Mike McCoy; Mike Mills; Brian Polk; Anne, Ray, Allison, & I I Jonathan Reynolds; Ray Roberts; Maggi & Tico Rubio; Brian & Dave Straub;

and Carolyn, Pete, & Scott Yockey. For most of the day, FABA President Tico Rubio lectured and demon-

strated how to make damascene billets for knives. Tico welded up a few folds for two billets-by hand. Ray Reynolds doesn't have a power ham- mer yet. Tico also demonstrated the drop-tong welding technique and critiqued some of the projects people were pounding out, using the two Sandia gas forges and Ray's coal forge. We had one more Sandia forge on hand, but didn't fire it up. The group bought another $32 worth of San- dia gas forge raffle tickets in the course of the day.

The southeast region won't be meeting in June because many people will be out of town on the third Saturday. We'll have news in next month's newsletter about the July meeting.

EXCERPTS FROM THE ABANA CHAPTER LIAISON COMMITTEE NEWSLETTER by ABANA Board Member Clayton Carr

ABANA Board member Peter Happny sent me a newspaper clipping declaring it was a blacksmith who invented the first practical bicycle. The Scottish smith, Kirkpatrick Macmillan, invented the machine in 1834. His invention had foot pedals, a crank, and rods transmitting power to the rear wheel, while previous cycles, called hobbyhorses, were pro- pelled by the rider's feet on the ground. I'm reasonably sure it WASN'T a blacksmith that invented the present-day bicycle seat! We're smarter than that . . . .

California blacksmith Ron Young intends to write a book on coloring + metals, and is interested in hearing from anyone who has a recipe or other information on the subject. He will credit anyone contributing to this book. If you have such information, write to Ron at 625 West 10th Avenue, Escondido, CA 92025.
