Innovation in language teaching holds the key to raising standards because it is a driving force that renews energies and enhances the learning environment. Innovation and excellence come in many forms but they are always clearly recognisable and inspiring. In endeavouring to find solutions to new challenges, teachers often are encouraged to innovate, to make new decisions, to adjust and modify pedagogical tasks and to create new spaces for thinking and action in the classroom.

During this, the European Day of Languages 2007, we in the language learning and teaching community avail once more of this opportunity to give a platform to those who innovate, whose ideas and practice in achieving the European Award for Languages and the Language Learner of the Year Award have inspired us. In the teaching and learning community, we need to continue to support and encourage enquirers, to identify potential leaders and to learn from those who create flexible responses and encourage initiative.

The European Award for Languages (also known as the Language Label) recognises creativity and innovation in improving the quality of language learning and teaching. This year, eight projects will be awarded the Label, having being selected on the criteria of excellence, innovation and the ability to serve as a model for others.

This year also we honour the three worthy winners of The Language Learner of the Year 2007. The purpose of this award is to recognise the achievements of individuals in the formal or non-formal sector in learning a language. The present winners provide an inspiring example of how languages are learned, used and become part of an individual’s personal and social landscape. We heartily congratulate the individuals and the project teams whose achievements are described in this brochure.

Nuair a bhíonn nuálaíocht i gceist i dteagasc teangacha, cuireann sí go mór le caighdeáin na foghlama agus cabhraíonn sí le fuinneamh agus misneach a bhronnadh ar mhúinteoirí agus ar fhoghlaimeoirí araon. Is iomaí crot atá ar an nuálaíocht agus is iomaí forbairt a bhíonn i gceist ó thús deireadh na cruthaitheachta, ach is iad na cáilíochtaí céanna feabhais a bhíonn i gceist i gcónaí. Go minic nuair a bhíonn gá le réiteach nua ar dhúshlán nó ar fhadhb cuir i gcás, tagann cruthaitheacht chun cinn a sháraíonn na laincisí agus na deacrachtaí uile chun pobal na foghlama a spreagadh. This project involved teaching the pupils in a second class in Scoil Carmel Primary School, Firhouse, the games strand of the PE curriculum through French. The project took place over a six-week period and the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach and Total Physical Response method were employed by the teacher.

The objectives of both the PE curriculum and the Modern Languages Initiative in Primary Schools (MLPSI) were considered. The teacher only used the target language, French, when communicating with the children.

The children worked cooperatively, using the parachute, developing ball-handling skills, playing team games, moving to music by French composers and learning action songs. As cultural awareness is an important element in the MLPSI, a cultural dimension was introduced in the final week. Through station teaching, the children played traditional French children’s games, including l’escargot (hopscotch), skipping, using elastics and boules. Station teaching was also used to allow the children participate in sports associated with France such as The French Open (tennis), Le Mans (obstacle course), La Coupe du Monde (football) and The Six Nations (rugby).

The children’s attitude towards the experience was extremely positive and enthusiastic. They benefited greatly by being immersed in the French language in a fun, active and challenging way.

Deutsch macht Spaß is the name of the company set up by five students from CBS High School, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. Their aim is to produce a language pack for primary schools that involves a new and innovative approach to teaching and learning the German language through song and games. They also organise instruction of the pack to primary school pupils and provide training to teachers on how to implement it’s contents.

The pack consists of: • aCDcontainingoriginalsongs

produced and sung by the students while playing the guitar, flute, piano and drums

• acolouringbookcontainingeducational sheets that reinforce what has been learnt from the songs

• aboardgameteachingthecultureand geography of Germany and Ireland as well as getting the players to formulate their own German words

• postersthatcanbeusedasvisualaids in the classroom.

The company won the RDS National Innovation Award 2007 and will represent Ireland at the European Innovation Awards in Berlin.

The www.focal.ie Project (2004-2007) was initiated by FIONTAR, DCU, in partnership with the University of Wales, Lampeter and Foras na Gaeilge. This project was funded by INTERREG IIIA Ireland/Wales in the main, and in part by Foras na Gaeilge.

The principal objective of the project was to increase access to Information Technology resources among the general public, in this case access to high-level resources in Irish. The principal outcome of the project in is an integrated database of Irish-language terminology (270,000 terms) which is available to the general public free of charge through the Internet, at home, at school and in the workplace. It addresses in particular the needs of business and communication enterprises, of the education sector, the translation industry and other specialist users. The project included a training element in the use of electronic resources for Irish.

Fiontar created a public resource in close collaboration with the Terminology Committee, Foras na Gaeilge, the official authority for term-creation and ratification. Fourteen staff worked on the initial phase of the www.focal.ie <http://www.focal.ie/Home.aspx> database in FIONTAR at various stages of its development. The project was delivered in collaboration with a partner in Wales, University of Wales Lampeter.

FIONTAR, DCU will continue to develop the focal.ie resource on a project basis for Foras na Gaeilge. This phase includes management of the database and a continuation of editorial work on existing terms already in the database. Additional resources will be added to the database during this phase and a methodology will be developed to link the database to the National Corpus of Irish.

Jury CommentsGiven the new status of Irish as a working and official language of the EU and the absence of up-to-date dictionaries in the language, this project is indispensable. It makes a significant contribution to those working professionally in Irish and is a valuable addition to Irish-language translation tools. The project is innovative in its use of technology, its cooperation with an Coiste Téarmaíochta and its inclusion of a course in dictionary use.

Because Japanese uses three writing systems, one of the biggest challenges in learning Japanese is learning to read and write. Target language materials make use of all three writing systems, so learners have to master hiragana and katakana as quickly as possible. For the past five years, students at University of Limerick have been using a unique colour-based method for learning how to read and write Japanese.

In 2005, Barbara Geraghty, Ann Marcus Quinn and Kumiko Kurebayashi of the Department of Languages and Cultural Studies, developed a CDROM using the colour-based method to teach hiragana. The disc’s Flash-based software simultaneously demonstrates the stroke order used when writing and provides a native pronunciation for each character.

Research carried out at University of Limerick has shown that use of the CD can lead to faster acquisition of the hiragana, encourages autonomous learning and can be a valuable component of a blended approach to beginners’ level Japanese teaching and learning. Observation also shows that students use this new technology to improve their handwriting in Japanese.

Jury CommentsThe project is innovative and original in that it has improved on an earlier colour-based method developed by the University of Limerick. The new system is interactive and exploits the familiarity of young people with the latest advances in multimedia such as MP3 files. The project is embedded in the principles of learner autonomy. Its roots are clearly located in the lecturers’ conviction that their learners learn best and efficiently when they take responsibility for their own learning.

The main function of the Language Centre, which was established in 2005, is to cater for the English language needs of Castleknock Community College’s international students. It does this by assessing students, placing them in appropriate learning groups, and teaching them functional English.

Teaching resources include customised class plans, reading materials suitable for a wide range of English fluency levels, English language games and puzzles, and interactive English computer programmes. Independent learning and self-monitoring are encouraged. Teachers and students cooperate to create dictionaries of subject-related words and images. Flags and multilingual welcome signs representing each nationality in the College have been placed at the student entrance.

Castleknock Community College’s Policy Document on Interculturalism and Anti-Racism outlines the College’s aim to create a campus and environs which focus on the positive synergy which can evolve from a multicultural society. The International Board Games Club, held every Friday lunchtime, and other initiatives provide the possibility of developing interculturalism organically.

Our school`s project, Mira Quien Baila, was inspired by the popular and traditional Spanish television shows in which famous guests perform their latest songs while dancing to the music.

Throughout this project we endeavoured to include as many aspects of the school curriculum as possible, engaging the children in making the set for the television show, choosing the songs, and using IT to source ideas.

The entire school, teachers and pupils alike, played an active part in learning a foreign language (L2). We also involved the parents: they listened to the Spanish songs and conversations at breakfast, during car journeys, even at bedtime! Some of the parents also provided us with flamenco and Irish dancing costumes.

Cultural elements from Ireland, Spain and the European Union were introduced, making pupils aware of cultural differences and giving them a European perspective. The project produced a learning outcome, a DVD, which shows how fluent in Spanish the pupils became within a few months.It also enabled the children to revise and consolidate their year’s work. Most of all, it involved the entire school community working together in a fun way towards a common goal.

Bhí na tuismitheoirí rannpháirteach ann, leis: d’éisteadar leis na hamhráin agus leis an gcomhrá Spáinnise ag am bricfeasta, ar thurais ghluaisteáin agus ag am dul a chodladh fiú amháin! Thug roinnt tuismitheoirí feistis flamenco agus feistis rince Ghaelaigh dúinn de bhreis air sin.

Tugadh eilimintí cultúrtha ó Éirinn, ón Spáinn agus ón Aontas Eorpach isteach a chuir na daltaí ar an eolas faoi éagsúlachtaí cultúrtha agus a thug léargas Eorpach dóibh. Bhí toradh foghlama ar an tionscnamh, is é sin, DVD a thaispeánann an oiread líofachta sa Spáinnis a d’éirigh leis na daltaí a bhaint amach laistigh de chúpla mí. Chomh maith leis sin, chuir sé ar chumas na ndaltaí athbhreithniú a dhéanamh ar an obair a dheineadar i gcaitheamh na bliana agus thug sé deis dóibh a gcuid eolais nua a dhaingniú. Is é an rud is tábhachtaí ná go raibh pobal iomlán na scoile rannpháirteach sa

A new programme in the Department of Italian, NUI Galway, gives students studying Italian the opportunity to learn about language acquisition and language learning. The students then put this learning into practice by teaching introductory classes in Italian in local primary schools.

This initiative aims to foster positive attitudes towards language learning for all involved, both primary and third-level students. Service learning seeks to reinvigorate the civic mission of higher education and instil in students a sense of social responsibility and civic awareness. The Service Learning in Italian initiative provides university students with an opportunity to integrate their learning in a real context, giving them a pride in their learning and increasing their confidence as individuals, while adding a new element to their skillset.

The service learning module also gives local primary schools access to a continental language class, without having to commit to extra resources. Primary school children who participate range in age from ten to twelve and are taught in an interactive and fun way. Their interest in new languages and their aptitude for language learning are fostered and promoted.

Seeing the diversity of the school community grow, the fourth-year Irish class wished to include students from other nationalities in learning Irish, so they planned an Irish class and invited the foreign national students to attend. This gave the Irish students the opportunity to organise a class plan, to teach their native language and to use various other skills. The foreign national students enjoyed the experience and left knowing a cúpla focal.

The Irish students also wanted to learn basic words from the languages of the foreign national students: Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish and Russian. As a result we extended the project to include a word exchange programme where the Irish class made up flashcards with an Irish word, the phonetics and a picture to represent the word on it. These were given to the foreign students, who in turn gave them back with the same word translated into their own language. We then made up a chart with all the words in the various languages on it to display in the school.

As a result the students learned how to say simple but useful phrases, such as ‘hello’, ‘goodbye’ and ‘thank you’ in more than six languages. We also made bookmarks for staff so that they would be able to greet students of all nationalities in their classrooms. Because of the success of this project it is my intention to continue it with my Transition Year class next year.

The individual award for the European Award for Languages was launched in 2005. This departure within the existing European Award for Languages is in line with the Lisbon strategy for economic, social, and environmental renewal launched in March 2000. The objective is to make Europe a competitive knowledge-based society. Language learning is seen as a key skill, which contributes to this goal. The Language Learner of the Year Award aims to map the linguistic development of individual learners and to recognise their achievements.

Language Learners of the Year 2007

Bernie Connell, Institute of Technology, Tallaght, returned to education after a gap of 20 years to pursue her dream of studying languages. Being a mature student, even in this era of lifelong learning, can be daunting, but Bernie overcame this challenge to engage totally in the learning experience, and her love of languages ensured she achieved her goal.

Bernie first completed a FETAC course to gain credits so that she could apply for the Applied Languages Programme at the Institute of Technology, Tallaght. As a mother of two young children, completing the mandatory year abroad meant overcoming many difficulties faced by herself and her two daughters, who moved to France and Spain with her. Bernie is an excellent role model for students returning to education, showing that where motivation is strong, challenges can be met and goals can be achieved.

Finbar Horgan, CBS High School, Clonmel, had studied German up to Junior Certificate but in Transition Year, German was no longer available. Having a keen interest in languages and language learning, Finbar did not want his German language to fall by the wayside. Using his own initiative, he continued to study the language in his spare time.

While doing so, he came up with an innovative way of teaching German at primary level. He coupled his musical talents with his language abilities to introduce German in a fun way to the classroom. His obvious love of the German language and his determination to improve his skills and raise the profile of German have led to the introduction of German in Transition Year in CBS High School, Clonmel, from September 2007.

Nadege Kalufando, Castleknock Community College, began school in September 2004 with no English language skills. Due to the school system in her own country, she had only attended school for two years before arriving in Ireland. At the beginning, she was disheartened by her lack of language skills and overwhelmed by rules and regulations which were new to her. Despite all these obstacles, through her own determination, and with continual support from the staff and pupils of the school, she is now preparing to sit the Junior Certificate.

Ó tharla go raibh an-dúil aige sna teangacha agus i bhfoghlaim teanga, níor theastaigh ó Fhinbar a chuid Gearmáinise a ligint i ndearmad. Agus é ag obair as a stuaim féin, lean sé de staidéar a dhéanamh ar an teanga nuair a bhí am le spáráil aige.

Agus é ag gabháil don obair seo, tháinig sé ar shlí nuálaíoch chun an Ghearmáinis a mhúineadh ar an leibhéal bunscoile. Tharraing sé a bhuanna ceoil agus a chumas sa teanga le chéile chun an Ghearmáinis a thabhairt isteach chuig an seomra ranga ar modh

spraíúil. Ba shoiléir go raibh an-ghrá aige don Ghearmáinis agus bhí sé meáite ar a chuid scileanna a fheabhsú agus próifíl na Gearmáinise a ardú. Dá bhrí sin cuirfear tús le múineadh na Gearmáinise san Idirbhliain ag Meánscoil na mBráithre Críostaí, Cluain Meala ó Mheán Fómhair 2007 amach.

Thosnaigh Nadege Kalufando, Coláiste Phobail, Caisleán Cnucha, ag freastal ar scoil i Meán Fómhair 2004 gan aon aon Bhéarla. De dheasca córas na scoile ina tír féin ní raibh sí ar scoil ach amháin ar feadh dhá bhliana sular tháinig sí go hÉirinn. Ar dtús bhí sí in isle brí mar gheall ar an easpa scileanna teanga a bhí aici agus bhain an oiread sin rialacha agus rialacháin nua geit aisti. Thug sí faoi na deacrachtaí go diongbháilte, agus le tacaíocht leanúnach ó fhoireann agus ó dhaltaí na scoile tá sí ag ullmhú anois chun scrúdú an Teastais Shóisearaigh a dhéanamh.

The European Day of Languages, which is celebrated each year on 26 September, is a Council of Europe Initiative founded in 2001, the European Year of Languages. It aims to:

The European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) aims to encourage excellence and innovation in language teaching and to help Europeans learn languages more efficiently. Currently, 33 of the 46 Member States of the Council of Europe are involved in the work of the ECML, which is based in Graz, Austria. Léargas is the national contact point for the ECML in Ireland.

The ECML supports the implementation of language education policies based on the recommendations of the Council of Europe. Specifically, it aims to:

- gather and disseminate information about language education in all member states

- stimulate and facilitate discussion on language education at European level

- support the training of multipliers (teacher trainers, administrators and researchers).

The principal instrument used to achieve these aims is the medium-term programme of activities. The ECML encourages language experts, trainers and researchers to devise and participate in programmes of activities designed to take place over a four-year period.

The current medium-term programme runs from 2004-2007. The 22 projects developed during this term come under the title of Languages for social cohesion: language education in a multilingual and multicultural Europe.

Projects under the third medium-term programme (2008-2011), EMPOWERING LANGUAGE PROFESSIONALS: Competences - Networks - Impact – Quality, will address four thematic areas: - evaluation- continuity in language learning- content and language education- plurilingual education.

Is é is sprioc don Lárionaid Eorpaigh do Nuatheangacha (LEN) ná sármhaitheas agus nuálaíocht i múineadh teanga a spreagadh agus cabhair a thabhairt d’Eorpaigh teangacha a fhoghlaim ar chuma níos éifeachtaí. Faoi láthair tá 33 de 46 Ballstáit Chomhairle na hEorpa rannpháirteach in obair an LEN, atá suite i Graz na hOstaire. Is é Léargas pointe teagmhála náisiúnta an LEN in Éirinn.

Tacaíonn an LEN le cur i bhfeidhm na mbeartas oideachas teanga atá bunaithe ar mholtaí Comhairle na hEorpa. Is iad na sainspriocanna atá acu ná: - eolais a bhailiú agus a scaipeadh

maidir le hoideachas teanga sna Ballstáit go léir

- plé ar oideachas teanga a spreagadh agus a éascú ar leibhéal Eorpach

- tacú le hoiliúint a chur ar iolraitheoirí (oiliúnóirí múinteoirí, riarthóirí agus taighdeoirí).

Is é clár meántéarmach na n-imeachtaí an uirlis is tábhachtaí a úsáidtear chun na haidhmeanna seo a bhaint amach. Spreagann an LEN saineolaithe teanga, oiliúnóirí agus taighdeoirí chun cláir imeachtaí a chumadh agus a bheith páirteach ann. Is cláir iad a chuirfear i gcrích thar thréimhse cheithre bliana.

Tá an clár meántéarmach reatha ar siúl ó 2004-2007. Is é an teideal atá ar an 22 tionscnamh a bhí á bhforbairt le linn an téarma seo ná ‘Teangacha ar son comhtháthaithe shóisialta: oideachas teanga in Eoraip iltheangach ilchultúrtha.

Is é is teideal don tríú chlár meántéarmach (2008-2011) ná ‘AG CUMASÚ TEANGEOLAITHE GAIRMIÚLA: Inniúlachtaí-Líonraí-Tionchar-Cáilíocht. Tabharfaidh na tionscnaimh faoi cheithre théama: - meastóireacht- leanúnachas i bhfoghlaim teanga- ábhair agus oideachas teanga- oideachas iltheangach.

Léargas manages a range of national and international exchange and cooperation programmes.

The two main European Commission funded programmes managed by Léargas are:

Lifelong Learning Programme – for schools, vocational training and lifelong learning opportunities

Youth in Action – for youth and community work opportunities

These programmes aim to bring a European dimension to education, training, and youth and community work. The programmes allow young people and those who work with them to benefit from building links with others who work and learn in similar fields right across Europe. Funding is generally supplied to organisations that can then enable people to work with each other in school projects, to improve their language skills, to cooperate on shared issues and challenges, and to create new and innovative training methods.

Léargas

As well as these programmes, Léargas runs other youth and educational programmes and services such as eurodesk, Causeway, East-West Schools, eTwinning and the Irish Aid Schools Linking and Immersion Scheme.

The National Centre for Guidance in Education and the North South Exchange Consortium also operate as part of the Léargas network.

Cuirtear maoiniú ar fáil do na heagraíochtaí de ghnáth sa tslí go gcuireann siad ar chumas daoine oibriú i gcomhar lena chéile ar thionscnaimh scoile, a gcumas teanga a chur chun cinn, saincheisteanna agus dúshláin a phlé le chéile agus modhanna oiliúna nua nuálaíocha a cheapadh.
