Introduction

Cleveland International Piano Competition • 2007

THE CLEVELAND INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITIONPresented with major support from Mr. and Mrs. A. Malachi Mixon III

In 1975, an International Piano Competition was founded in Cleveland. It was the first such eventever held in northern Ohio, and one of only a few international piano competitions taking place inthe United States. The first Competition and the nine others that followed biennially weresponsored jointly by the Robert Casadesus Society and the Cleveland Institute of Music to honorthe memory of the great French pianist, Robert Casadesus. Cleveland was chosen as the site ofthe Competition because of the long association between George Szell and Robert Casadesus, and at the instigation of Grant Johannesen (then president of the Cleveland Institute of Music).Since its founding in 1975, exceptional young artists in increasing numbers have been attracted tothe Competition because of the high level of accomplishment required.

In 1994, the Piano International Association of Northern Ohio (PIANO) was founded and becamethe sponsoring organization for the Competition. The goals of PIANO are to honor pianisticexcellence, to support the best musical qualities of young artists, to encourage the performance ofand acquaintance with the great repertoire of piano literature, and to promote internationalfriendship and good will through music. The Competition was renamed the Cleveland InternationalPiano Competition to reflect the pride of the people of Cleveland in hosting this great event. Thisyear we are proud to continue this tradition of excellence by celebrating the 32nd anniversary ofthe Competition’s founding, and the 17th biennial event.

Artistic DirectorPaul Schenly

The 2007 Cleveland International PianoCompetition is about to begin! This year's eventhas many of the endearing features of previouscompetitions and a unique flavor all its own. Aswith previous years, this competition bringspeople together, from the city, from the region, and from the world. The contestants, staff, judges, and audience interact to form a creativeand vibrant musical community. This communityis further enhanced through partnerships withmajor area cultural institutions such as TheCleveland Orchestra, The Cleveland PlayHouse, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Inall, the diversity of people and their unique skillsenrich Cleveland and its region by their per-formances, personalities and international goodwill. This collective hard work results in a won-derful communication through the common, inclusive language of music. Even though thesefeatures have characterized previous competi-tions as well, the 2007 event will have its owncharacter because of the uniqueness of themusical beauty and excitement produced byour new and wonderfully talented contestants.

Our Competition has a timeless value as well. Amajor reason for this is that the Cleveland com-munity forms bonds with the visiting contest-ants and jury. As a result, lasting friendships arecreated with these future star performers andteachers. The resulting atmosphere of securityand trust allows the performers the opportunityto develop their skills to the highest level, andmembers of the audience to listen and enjoythe performances.

After the manner of Proust, I hope that hearingall this beautiful music triggers a flood of happyand pleasurable memories. Up with the curtain!

Executive DirectorKaren Knowlton

As I write this, I am listening to a recording ofone of our laureates performing with theCleveland Orchestra in the summer of 2005.What a thrill to relive the experiences of the lastCompetition and to think about embarking onthe same journey in 2007. After all of the plan-ning for board and committee meetings, writingdozens of grant proposals and hundreds of let-ters, attending meetings too numerous to men-tion, traveling to Europe and New York to hearauditions, editing biographies and repertoirelists, supervising a growing staff, and establish-ing friendships with our many partners, wefinally realize our “product.” And it is worthevery minute, just to hear the glorious music.

The knowledge that in some important way we help young people realize their dreamsdrives us to ever increasing commitment. I believe this same knowledge inspired ourdear friend Martha Joseph to play a leadingrole in the creation of this Competition morethan thirty years ago. Martha passed away last year, and although she is deeply missed by many of us, her spirit does live on in thehearts and hands of the young people we arehere to witness.

These marvelous artists are following a difficultpath, one often full of obstacles and disap-pointments. We cherish them for the life thatthey have chosen. They will keep our belovedmusic alive – music that inspires us and nour-ishes the soul. Through their performances,we will hear every emotion imaginable por-trayed wordlessly – from anger and confusionto joy and exultation, and everything inbetween. What a wonderful journey we willtake together! We will hold these gifted young artists in our hearts forever. Their performances will always remain with us.

It is not an overstatement to say that hundredsof people have helped to present the extraordi-narily talented young people you have come tohear. We thank them all as we welcome ourcontestants, and you, to the 17th ClevelandInternational Piano Competition.

Jahja LingHaving conducted all of the major orchestras in theUnited States and many prominent orchestras inEurope and Asia, Jahja Ling maintains a distin-guished career as an internationally renowned con-ductor. Mr. Ling recently completed his third sea-son as music director of the San Diego Symphony, where his work continues to receive the highestpraise from the public and critics alike. In additionto his post in San Diego, Mr. Ling holds the title ofmusic director laureate of the Florida Orchestra andthe National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan afterserving as music director and artistic director, respectively, with those organizations.

Jahja Ling was a member of the conducting staffof The Cleveland Orchestra from 1984 to 2005. From 1985 to 2002, he served asresident conductor of the Orchestra, and for six seasons, from 2000 to 2005, heserved as Blossom Festival Director. This summer, he returns to the Blossom Festivalfor two concerts.

Recent and upcoming engagements for Mr. Ling include concerts with the symphonyorchestras of Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Honolulu, Houston, Phoenix, Pittsburgh,San Antonio, and Utah. Abroad, he appeared recently at the Tivoli Festival with theCopenhagen Philharmonic and with the China Philharmonic in Beijing and theSingapore Symphony.

Mr. Ling’s commitment to working with and developing young musicians is evident, ashe served as founding music director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra from1986 to 1993 and the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra from 1981 to 1984. Mr. Ling’s recordings include a range of works on the Telarc, Azica Records, andContinuum labels, featuring performances with the Florida Orchestra, the RoyalPhilharmonic, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. His performance of the world pre-miere of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Third Symphony with the New York Philharmonic isincluded in the ensemble’s “American Celebrations” collection.

In 1931, the Orchestra moved to its permanent home, Severance Hall, in Cleveland’sUniversity Circle area. This magnificent facility, designed by Cleveland architectural firmWalker & Weeks, was primarily the gift of John L. Severance as a memorial to his wife.In 2000, Severance Hall reopened following a $36-million restoration and renovationproject, led by design architect David M. Schwarz Architectural Services andacousticians Jaffe Holden Scarbrough, which included the construction of a newconcert stage, enhanced technical capabilities, and the refurbishment and re-installation (in 2001) of the building’s original E.M. Skinner organ. The expansion to ayear-round orchestra season was made possible in 1968 with the opening of BlossomMusic Center on an 800-acre site south of Cleveland.

The Cleveland Orchestra is in a new era under Franz Welser-Möst’s guidance, whilemaintaining a steadfast commitment to its long-held traditions of artistic excellence, educational outreach, and community service.

Social Events and Recitals

Cleveland International Piano Competition • 2007

Viva Piano!Viva Piano! is a celebration of our laureates that is held mid-way between Competitions, in the “off” year. It featuressocial events and recitals held in private homes and publicvenues.

Sergey Kuznetsov, second prize winner at the 2005Competition, delighted a full house with a solo performanceat the Cleveland Institute of Music in October 2006. Aftertwo encores, Mr. Kuznetsov took the stage with CIM’srenowned Cavani Quartet for an electrifying performance ofBrahms’ Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34a that brought theaudience to its feet. Patrons Michael and Zoya Reyzissponsored the performances, as well as a reception thatwas held immediately afterward.

SoiréesThe popular Soirées recital series returned to audienceacclaim in the spring of 2006 at Acacia Country Club and atthe homes of Chester Scott in Bratenahl, Carol and DavidGeyer in Waite Hill, and Nancy McCann in Lakewood.Recitals were presented by:

Inna Faliks, USA, a contestant in the 2005 Competition;Grace Fong, USA, a semi-finalist in 2005;Di Wu, China, a contestant in 2005; andHong Xu, China, a semi-finalist in 2005.

The four events were attended by more than 300 patronsand raised $10,000 for the 2007 Competition.

Event co-chairs Suzanne Blaser(left) and Teresa Good are picturedwith Hong Xu.

Nearly 200 guests attended the popular ProAm Recitalsheld over two evenings at the home of PIANO BoardMember Dr. James Gibbs. Guests enjoyed an elegant buffet dinner and an intimate recital by 2005 fourth prizewinner Spencer Myer. The highlights of the ProAm, asalways, were the entertaining duet, trio and even quartetperformances of Mr. Myer and some of the Cleveland area’smost interesting amateur pianists. Both evenings wereconcluded by a rousing rendition of The Stars and StripesForever, performed on two pianos with eight hands.

Cleveland International Piano Competition • 2007

Following the 2003 Competition, a syndicated radio series was developed that featured 13 one-hour programs of solo performances by the 2003 contestants. The syndicating entity wasWCLV/Seaway Productions, which offered the programs to classical radio stations across thecountry. The series, which was broadcast on 95 stations across the U.S., as well as in ten countries in Europe, reflected favorably on the Competition and the city of Cleveland. The Serieswas successfully repeated in 2005, and we are very pleased that our 2007 contestants and TheCleveland Orchestra will be syndicated again in early 2008.

Many thanks to The George P. Storer Foundation, which is the series syndication sponsor for 2007.Additional thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Conrad and Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon MacLeod, whomade generous gifts to underwrite the fees for the Orchestra’s broadcast rights.
