Making Up Instructional Time Lost to Weather

The District is required to make up all instructional time lost when classes are delayed or cancelled because of weather. Options include using a make-up date as identi ed on the District calendar, adding time to the beginning and end of a school day starting after spring break, or tapping into hours in excess of the state minimum requirement of 1,080.

Make up decisions for weather events are decided on a case-by-case basis. Families will always be made aware as early as possible following a weather event through the School Messenger call system and the District website.

IOWA ASSESSMENT TESTING INFORMATION & TEST-TAKING

STRATEGIESPlease note that the week of February 29, 2016

third through fifth graders will be taking the Iowa Assessment tests. These tests are one measure that tells us how our students are performing against state standards. We ask that you please refrain from scheduling appointments during this week as much as possible so that your child will be in attendance during those important testing times.

Student Successful TipsPhysicalGet a good night’s sleep (9-10 hours recommended

for elementary age students)Eat a healthy breakfast (protein)Wear comfortable clothes Use deep breathing

EmotionalUnderstand that this test is importantFocusTake it seriouslyUse relaxation strategies to reduce test anxietyStamina-keep going—pacing—perseverance

Good Testing Taking Read all answer choicesRead answers—eliminate wrong answers

right awayRead questions before reading passage,

then read entire passageGo back to text to find answersLook for key wordsUsing process of elimination, narrowing choicesQuiet-respect othersRe-reading text for answersAuthor’s purpose of text Main ideaTest-taking vocabulary (paragraph, passage, etc…)Move-onInterpret text features

FRIENDSHIP CELEBRATIONSThe students at Cleveland School will

be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 12th. Celebrations are scheduled from 2:45-3:30 p.m. Students are invited to participate in a homeroom Valentine’s exchange. It is important that students bring a Valentine to school for each of their classmates if they choose to exchange. Homeroom parents will be contacting those of you who have indicated an interest in helping to supply treats for the celebrations. Remember that all treats must be healthy and meet the wellness guidelines.
