Rallying Together Again

Dear members and friends of First English,

The summer is flying by quickly! It’s not too early to be thinking about some exciting learning and fellowship events planned for September at First English. Once again our fall schedule will “kick off” in style with our exciting all ages, congregation wide Rallying Together event on Sunday, September 14, 2014:

Worship – 10:00 AM All Member & Family Picnic Barbeque – 11:15 AM Games & Fellowship – 12:00 – 2:00 PM

Fall is typically the time of year when many of the activities of the church that have taken a rest for the summer months, spring back to life including:

Sunday school New Youth Activities Choirs Confirmation Adult Bible study

We will begin the day with One Worship Service at 10:00 AM. This year’s service will feature our youth leading us in worship! As Mark Allan Powell, a professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and author of “Loving Jesus” has said so well:

“Worship is the corporate expression of the church’s love for God. When we worship God, we love God, as a community, together. We can love God as individuals, but worship is something more. Worship is corporate love”.

Having one worship service on our day of Rallying Together will be the perfect opportunity to gather our entire congregation as ONE, worship and praise God and give thanks for the many ways God has already and most certainly will continue to bless this ministry called First English. Following worship we will continue our Rallying Together with a First English Picnic Barbeque complete with hamburgers, hotdogs, a variety of potluck dishes and games for all ages. The bounce house will be back again too!! So, what can you do to make it all happen?

First and foremost plan to be there!!! Come dressed for fun! Second, check out the sign up sheets on the board in the lounge. Third, get the word out to members who have been gone for the summer, friends, and

neighbors. All are welcome.

There are many great opportunities for grill masters, game supervisors, set–up and clean-up artists. As with all gatherings, if we all join our hands to offer our help, all will have fun.

BURDENS

July 6, 2014 Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

What kind of burdens are you carrying? I repeat, what kind of burdens

are you carrying? Maybe it is the constant labor of a hectic work schedule that

leaves one physically and mentally and emotionally exhausted.

Maybe it is worry over a marriage relationship that is far from ideal;

Maybe it is concern about our children who seem to be living in a way we

cannot understand; or maybe we are even concerned about sending our children

off to school as 74 shootings have taken place over the past few years.

Maybe it is the burden of disease or illness, or just plain old struggling

with trying to get around and do what we want, either for ourselves or our

loved ones. Maybe it is the constant care required by elderly parents or

grandparents.

Maybe it is concern about making ends meet, the constant juggling of

bills or worry whether we will out- live our resources.

Maybe it is the concern of downsizing and job loss or seeking elusive

gainful employment.

Or maybe we just can’t seem to find that peace of mind that we so

eagerly want and seek.

Whatever our burdens are, and 40 years of ordained ministry has taught

me that there are none of us, not one of us who do not bear some kinds of

burdens; and those burdens for us are very real.

Maybe that is what makes these words of our Lord from our Gospel

lesson for today some of the most beloved verses in all of scripture. “Come to

me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in

heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my

burden is light.”

In this fast paced, hectic world in which we live, these words of rest and

comfort from the lips of Christ strike a beautiful chord for us.

Now yes, I have also been around long enough to realize that very often

we bring our own troubles and problems upon ourselves by our foolishness,

our stubbornness and our self-centeredness. The choices we make do have

implications for our lives and for the lives of those around us!

We like and we cherish our freedom. This is the weekend we celebrate

that freedom won for us by our forefathers and mothers in 1776, but yes,

sometimes our freedom gets us into trouble.

As I look at our society, I would suggest to us that we have sacrificed

ourselves at the altar of personal freedom at the detriment of what is good

for our society as a whole.

As St. Paul reminds us, “All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial. All things are

lawful; but not all things build up. Do not seek your own advantage, but that of the other.” Some

very good food for thought for our day and age!

But you know, in the final analysis, it does not really matter if we are victims of circumstances

beyond our control or if we bring our troubles upon ourselves; because the bottom line is that our problems,

our troubles, our burdens are very real and we must deal with them; for as life has taught us, very few

problems go away by themselves, and if ignored usually only become worse!

But now we might ask how, how Christ can lessen our burdens? What can Jesus do to give us rest,

to give us peace? How can Christ give to us that help with our everyday burdens and struggles?

Well, First of all, Christ can help us because he is always there; he is the ever present God. Christ

never has a busy signal; you will never get an answering machine or voice mail with Christ, you will not

need to log on again at a later time, your prayer will not get “dropped” like many cell calls, no he is there at

all times.

I ask you is that not a great and glorious blessing to be able to share our burdens, our frustrations,

our struggles with someone who cares, any time, day or night? There is true power in prayer and Christ

is always there, just a prayer away.

A second reason that Christ can lighten our burdens is simply, but profoundly the fact that he is

God; the most powerful force in all creation. As St. Paul reminds us, “If God is for us, who can be

against us.” When we link ourselves with the most powerful force in all creation, we are strengthened and

supported for our daily tasks and struggles.

Albert Stauderman illustrates this point with the following story. “Out for a walk with her father, a

little girl came to the bank of a swift flowing stream. There were pretty flowers at the edge of the stream

and the girl wanted to pick some of them, but her father drew her back. He showed her that the running

water had undercut the bank of the stream and made it unsafe. Disappointed, she persisted, ‘Daddy, how

many flowers can I pick?’ Her father answered ‘Pick as many as you can without letting go of my hand!’”

Now that is a good rule for life, is it not? Whatever loosens our hold on the Master’s hand

should always be avoided!

In the waters of Baptism God made us one of his own; God claimed us as his child, God made a

promise to us that he will always be with us. We never walk alone, we never face life’s difficult

moments alone. God is always there with the love, the strength, the peace, the hope that can only come

from the almighty, all loving God.

As the Psalmist reminds us, “His rod and his staff they comfort us.” And as St. Augustine put it, as

reflected in our “Prayer of the Day,” “Thou hast made us for thyself, and our souls are restless, until they

rest, O God, in thee.”

A third reason that Christ can ease our burdens and cares is because there is real power in love

and forgiveness. To know that we are loved, accepted and forgiven by God, through Christ, in spite of our

weaknesses, in spite of our sin; in spite of our struggles; empowers us to continue moving forward,

strengthened and renewed.

Love really is more powerful than brute force. Karl Menninger, the famous psychiatrist puts it

like this. He says, “Love cures people, both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it!” Have we

not seen this reality played out in our lives?

We love because God first loved us. Through God’s great gift of love and forgiveness, we in turn are

empowered to share that love with God, with others and with ourselves.

In fact, several interesting studies have shown that those people who are truly able to forgive have

fewer physical difficulties than those who hang on to ill feelings and resentment. As we all know, but often

forget, resentment eats away at our lives, however there is real power in love and forgiveness.

Update to the Senior Pastor Call Process

This is a quick recap of what has happened in the Senior Pastor call process thus far and what is

happening to move forward. On May 18 the church council decided to move forward with the call

process rather than have an interim pastor for a period of time after Pastor Schmidt’s retirement.

On June 1 the Church Council had a meeting and approved the following members for the call

committee:

John Nyquist – Chairman

Mark Balle, Jr.

John Blohm

Trevor Clor

Jeff Gates

Members of council were also given the task of working on the Ministry Site Profile (MSP) which

is the congregation’s resume and defines “who we are” to help in the selection of our new Senior

Pastor. Council members were encouraged to take the questions of the MSP to their board

members and other members of the congregation for reflection and input and have now completed

that process . The call committee met with Pastor Oberle and Pastor Holland from the Bishop’s

office on June 25 to learn details of how the call process will work . The call committee is now

working on posting our MSP for potential candidates to review on the ELCA website.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Congregational meeting scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2014

When Pastor Chris came to First English her call was to be co-terminus with

Pastor Schmidt’s retirement. As the council discussed the transition from Pastor

Schmidt to a new Senior Pastor we felt that an extension of Pastor Chris’s call would

be beneficial and necessary. The purpose of the meeting is for the

congregation to vote on an extension of the call of Pastor Chris Veres. The church

council has scheduled a Congregational meeting on Sunday, August 17, 2014

directly after the 10:30 am service.

English. Over $2,000.00 was donated last year to

First English through this program. If you are a

Thrivent policy holder you are eligible to also direct

your support to First English. The rules have

changed a bit in that now the gifting of the “Thrivent

Choice Dollars” must be done annually. You can

direct your gifts to First English by calling Thrivent

at 1-800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and state

ALTAR CLOTH

Have you noticed the new Altar Cloth

for our Contemporary Worship? Thinking

that it would be very meaningful to have an

Altar Cloth from the Holy city of Jerusalem,

we purchased this Altar Cloth on our recent

tour to Israel and Jordan.

Congratulations were omitted from the July CLEF to Cullin McGraw on his graduation from Grosse Pointe North

High School!!!

A Funeral Service was held for Clarence Schram on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at First English. Clarence passed

away July 22, 2014, one day short of his 98ty birthday. Thanks be to God who gives to us the victory through our

Lord, Jesus Christ.

9:30 a.m. THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY

THE EPISTLE TO THE GALATIANS

Book of Galatians will be the topic of our Thursday morning Bible

study this coming fall. We will have approximately six weeks this

coming fall following Labor Day before Pastor Schmidt retires, so this

time frame gives to us a great opportunity to study this relatively short

but powerful Epistle of St. Paul.

Martin Luther considered Galatians one of the purest presentations of

the Gospel, and as one author put it, “The importance of the brief let-

ter (Galatians) is hard to overestimate. The declaration of the princi-

ples reiterated in these six chapters made Christianity a true world

religion.”

Our sessions will begin after Labor Day, meeting Thursday

mornings, 9:30 -11:00 a.m. Our first session will be September 11,

2014. Please be with us as, together, we explore this powerful book.

We still have a few copies of the book Killing Jesus remaining, which

would make great summer reading, and are available from Pastor

Schmidt, Pastor Chris and Sue, in the office, at the discounted price of

$15.00.

Grace Circle - Fourth Monday at 7:00 p.m.

Peace Circle - First Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

Faith Circle - First Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

Hope Circle - Second Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

Check the calendar at www.feelc.org

WOMEN’S CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY

“Transforming Life and Faith” will be the topic of

our Women’s Circle Bible studies for this fall. This

study will look at the transforming power of Jesus, the

transformations of Paul and Moses and Lydia, Philip

and the Ethiopian, plus more. The September study

begins with St. Paul and a look at his transformation

and faith - from one who persecuted the church to

become her greatest missionary.

All women of First English are encouraged to

attend a Circle; please check the calendar for the various

Circles meeting schedule.

9:30a.m. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

LUTHER’S SMALL CATECHISM

On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther

nailed his “95 Theses” to the church door of

the Castle Church in Wittenberg Germany.

Historians have assigned this event as the

beginning of the Protestant Reformation. This

of course means that in 2017 we will celebrate

the 500 Anniversary of the Reformation.

Our Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, I

believe has made a great suggestion that as we

look forward to that celebration we study

Luther’s Small Catechism. She points out

that “it could be argued that no other

experience is more universally Lutheran than

studying Luther’s Small Catechism.”

So, our Adult Sunday School Classes

beginning this fall will be an overview of

Luther’s Small Catechism. Not only will

this give us an opportunity to celebrate our

Lutheran Heritage, but Luther’s Catechism is

also an excellent review of the basics of the

Christian Faith!

So that parents might be able to

participate in the “Rally Day” activities on

Sunday, September 14, our first class will

be Sunday, September 21, 2014. We meet

during the Sunday School Hour, 9:30 -10:30

AM in the Lounge. Make your plans now to

join with us!

COLUMBARIUM FOR FIRST ENGLISH COLUMBARIUM PROJECT GIVEN FINAL APPROVAL

Final approval for our Columbarium Project was given at the special congregational

meeting Sunday, June 1, 2014. Eickhof Columbaria, the company who will be installing our

Columbaria, has mailed us final plans to for our approval.

We will continue with the same policy as approved earlier concerning sale of the niches, i.e.

before construction begins, the companion niches, which hold two urns, will be sold for $1,500.00;

after construction begins they will sell for $1,800.00. We will give the congregation sixty days

notice before raising the price to $1,800.00. Niches will be assigned on a “first come-first-served”

basis, with members being able to choose the location of their niche within the Columbarium. To

date thirteen double niches have been sold. If you are interested in purchasing a companion niche,

please speak to Pastor Schmidt.

.

Our organ at First English is over fifty years old, and over the past 10 years has had switching

components beginning to fail. Because the original components of the organ console haven’t

been manufactured since the early 1970’s, the console and its related switching need to be rebuilt

to have the organ fully functional again. The three bids that we are looking at estimate repairs to

be approximately $300,000. Total funding at this point is at $66,363 in the Organ Fund,

including the gracious gift from the estate of Gladys Greenburg. If you wish to help with these

repairs, please mark your envelope "Organ Fund" and place in the offering plate or leave in the

office. Thank you! -The Board of Worship and Music.

This past year the first unit of our facility required tuck-pointing of the outer walls to

prevent costly water damage. In addition the pillars by the southeast entrance to the

Narthex required repair. Our Board of Church Properties received bids for the above

repairs and the Church Council approved these projects. The total cost was $19,600.00, and

these repairs have now all been completed. If you would like to assist with the cost of this

project simply mail your check to the church or place in the offering plate. Please designate

your gift for “Church Maintenance.” Thank You!

11

A fourth reason why Christ can ease our burdens is because the end is certain. Because we live

in a world marred by sin, life is not always fair, nor easy. All too often the good die young, often the

outwardly innocent suffer. Our daily news is filled with tragedy after tragedy.

The killings continue in schools and shopping malls and businesses and in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Daily it seems we hear of drug wars and abused and abandoned children; let alone the suffering caused

by natural disasters.

While these tragedies shock us to the core, as children of God, we know that pain, and suffering,

and tragedy and even death are not God’s will, nor do they have the final word!

God has the final word and his word to us is life; the abundant life now and the eternal life in

that world which is to come - where the pain, sorrow and brokenness of this life is replaced by the never

ending joy of that heavenly kingdom.

Because Christ lives, we shall live also. That is God’s promise to us, guaranteed to us by the

life, suffering, death and resurrections of Jesus Christ our Lord.

And that very nicely leads us to our last reason that I would like to lift us this morning as to why

Christ can give to us the rest and peace and that is that he encourages us to live in the present!

With the future secure, we are empowered to live each day that the good Lord gives us life.

But yet isn’t it amazing how we add to our cares and burdens by worrying about the past and what

might happen in the future.

However, in reality the past is past; we cannot redo what has already been done. Yes,

hopefully we can learn from the past, but what is done is done and we need to move forward.

Plus, how we as humans worry about what might happen. But have you ever thought that in all

actuality tomorrow never really comes; for when tomorrow comes - it is today!

I love that line from Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount:” “So do not worry about tomorrow, for

tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

Not one of us is guaranteed tomorrow! We need to learn to live each day as the good Lord

gives us each day, enjoying his blessings, using his gifts, sharing his love; impacting what we can

change and not worrying about those things over which we have no control.

In our text, Jesus admonishes us to learn from him and if we as his children could truly learn to

live our lives in the present, thanking God for his many blessings and using God’s gifts in service to

him and to one another; we would greatly ease our burdens.

The simple truth is that when we worry so about the past or what might happen in the future, we

not only add to our burdens of the day, but then we are also so preoccupied with ourselves, with our

own problems, our own worries, that we are not then truly open to the needs of others, nor are we

open to receive God’s love, help and strength.

The bottom line is that our true rest and comfort come not from within ourselves, but

rather our true rest and comfort come from outside ourselves! I repeat our true rest and comfort

come not from within ourselves, but rather from outside ourselves! Our true rest, comfort and meaning come from God and the more we are open to God’s help

and strength and peace and love, the more he can share and lighten our burdens.

Jesus, as always, says it best, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy

burdens and I will, not I might, but I will give you rest.”

May we always rest in the Lord!

The AbiBow Recycling, LLC program is designed for organizations to recycle

paper -- most of all, it’s an opportunity for us to recycle and help the

environment.

Have you enrolled or re-enrolled yet?? Please take the time to go online and

sign-up or renew your card and make your donation designation to First English

(#83535). It doesn’t cost you anything. If you don’t remember the email address

that you used previously to enroll, you can call (877)576-7587 to remove any

email attached to your card number and then proceed to enroll again. Our fund-

raising efforts, by participating in the Kroger Community Rewards Program, have

added up to significant money - just by purchasing your weekly groceries! DOWN

from the last quarter, our latest quarterly check was in the amount of $240.56!!

If you have never signed up – go to Kroger’s website

krogercommunityrewards.com and follow the prompts. You will need your Kroger

card. It doesn’t cost you anything……..just a little time to register.

KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM - PLEASE Re-enroll
