RENATA CONGER - OUR NEW PARISH EDUCATION/YOUTH MINISTRY COORDINATOR Dear Members and Friends of First English, At a special called meeting of our Church Council, the council unanimously approved the also unanimous recommendation of our “Interview Committee” to hire Renata Conger as our new full time, Parish Education/Youth Ministry Coordinator. I use the full title of “Parish Education/Youth Ministry Coordinator” to point out that we see Renata working with both our Parish Education and Youth Ministry mission and outreach - in essence beginning with cradle roll through college age. This includes working with parents of newly baptized members encouraging them to actively support their children in their Christian growth and life, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and assist with the Confirmation program. In addition, Renata will have major responsibility for our Middle School and High School youth ministry fellowship gatherings and outreach including work camp, and the various retreats and camps that we use as a part of our youth program. However, we are aware that the full title is a bit cumbersome, so we will refer to Renata as our “Education/Youth Coordinator.” Renata will begin her ministry here at First English on July 22, 2013, and we will have a formal installation service at worship, sometime in August. She and her husband live in Grosse Pointe Woods, so her commute will be nice and short. Renata is a graduate of University Liggett and has a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. She has been working part time at St. Thomas Lutheran School, Eastpointe and enjoys dance and theatre. We want to thank the membership of First English who in faith have ventured forth in adding this much needed position to our ministry; your commitment and your financial support is greatly appreciated. Also a sincere word of thanks to our Interview Committee: Amy Cornell, Liz Nyquist, Pam Southard, Lauren Nyquist, Pastor Chris, and myself for many hours were put into this process of drawing up a detailed job description, checking references and numerous interviews. And of course above all else, thanks be to God in Christ, who calls us into his body, the church, and promises to be with us and support us through the Spirit in the carrying out of the ministry which our Lord has entrusted to his church. You will enjoy Renata. She has a very pleasant, outgoing personality, good background in the Lutheran Church, very organized, and a willingness to follow through with what needs to be done. We very much look forward to adding Renata’s gifts, talents and abilities to the ministry of First English. Please take every opportunity to welcome her, support her and to make her feel at home in our midst. See you at worship. RENATA CONGER - OUR NEW PARISH EDUCATION/YOUTH MINISTRY COORDINATOR

Dear Members and Friends of First English,

At a special called meeting of our Church Council, the council unanimously approved the also unanimous recommendation of our

“Interview Committee” to hire Renata Conger as our new full time, Parish Education/Youth Ministry Coordinator.

I use the full title of “Parish Education/Youth Ministry Coordinator” to point out that we see Renata working with both our Parish Education and Youth Ministry mission and outreach - in essence beginning with cradle roll

through college age. This includes working with parents of newly baptized members

encouraging them to actively support their children in their Christian growth and life, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and assist with the Confirmation program. In addition, Renata will have major responsibility for

our Middle School and High School youth ministry fellowship gatherings and outreach including work camp, and the various retreats and camps that we

use as a part of our youth program. However, we are aware that the full title is a bit cumbersome, so we

will refer to Renata as our “Education/Youth Coordinator.”

Renata will begin her ministry here at First English on July 22, 2013, and we will have a formal installation service at worship, sometime in

August. She and her husband live in Grosse Pointe Woods, so her commute will be nice and short. Renata is a graduate of University Liggett and has a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. She has been working

part time at St. Thomas Lutheran School, Eastpointe and enjoys dance and theatre.

We want to thank the membership of First English who in faith have ventured forth in adding this much needed position to our ministry; your

commitment and your financial support is greatly appreciated. Also a sincere word of thanks to our Interview Committee: Amy Cornell, Liz Nyquist, Pam Southard, Lauren Nyquist, Pastor Chris, and myself for many hours were put

into this process of drawing up a detailed job description, checking references and numerous interviews. And of course above all else, thanks be

to God in Christ, who calls us into his body, the church, and promises to be with us and support us through the Spirit in the carrying out of the ministry which our Lord has entrusted to his church.

You will enjoy Renata. She has a very pleasant, outgoing personality, good background in the Lutheran Church, very organized, and a willingness

to follow through with what needs to be done. We very much look forward to adding Renata’s gifts, talents and abilities to the ministry of First English.

Please take every opportunity to welcome her, support her and to

make her feel at home in our midst.

See you at worship. God’s Blessings,

Pastor Schmidt

The Holy Trinity/First Sunday after Pentecost May 23 & 26, 2013

John 16:12-15 Rev. Christina Veres

Grace and peace to you my sisters and brothers, from God our Father and from our

Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ.

This is Holy Trinity Sunday! This is the day in the church calendar when the focus

is on the triune God.

This is a day when Pastor’s are to clearly explain to the congregation how God is

really three persons- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit yet there are not three persons, but

one God. In the first verse of the Gospel, Jesus says “I still have many things to say to

you, but you cannot bear them now”.

I wish he had said a little more about this subject back then so it would be easier now

to describe in human terms how a divine glorious God- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is

really only one. He didn’t. So here we go!

The story is told of St Augustine of Hippo, a great philosopher and theologian. He was

quite preoccupied with the doctrine of the Blessed Trinity. He wanted so much to

understand the doctrine of one God in three persons and to be able to explain it

logically.

As the story goes, one day St. Augustine was walking along the seashore and

reflecting on this matter. Suddenly, he saw a little child all alone on the shore.

The child made a hole in the sand, ran to the sea with a little cup, and filled her

cup with sea water, ran up and emptied the cup into the hole she had made in

the sand.

Back and forth she went to the sea, filled her cup and came and poured it into

the hole.

Augustine drew up and said to her, “Little child, what are you doing?”

She replied, “I am trying to empty the sea into this hole.”

“How do you think,” Augustine asked her, “that you can empty this immense

sea into this tiny hole and with this tiny cup?”

She answered back, “And you …, how do you suppose that with your small head

… you can comprehend the immensity of God?”

With that the child disappeared.

Trying to comprehend the immensity of God…. Something people of every age have

been trying to do since the beginning of time! We try to make logical sense of God

and his ways when in all truth there is a point at which we have to abandon logic and

just believe.

Ask any pastor, just about the time you think you may have found a way to explain the

Trinity, the logic in your thinking begins to circle around and become cloudy.

Maybe the difficulty of our logic is that we try to fit God into a nicely defined box with very distinct boundaries.

God is this.

God is not that!

Or, God acts this way

But God does not act that way.

The problem being, that as the little girl in the story remarked, how do you suppose that with your small head you

can comprehend the immensity of God? After all, it’s true, we are limited by our own HUMAN understanding.

Many people are surprised to learn that the Bible does not use the term “Triune” to describe God. The Bible does

not talk about the “Holy Trinity” as such, but certainly all of the three persons of our one God are revealed

throughout the scriptures.

Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and

of the Holy Spirit.

Saint Paul’s familiar greeting to the churches: Grace and peace to you from God our father and from the

Lord Jesus Christ.

After Jesus had been raised from the dead he appeared to his disciples saying “Peace be with you! As the Father

has sent me, I am sending you. And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

I think it’s safe to say the doctrine of the Trinity is a human explanation or way of describing or trying to

provide structure to help us comprehend the mystery and immensity of God. Structure is not a bad thing; it gives us

a concrete way to speak of our God and pass on the faith we as Christians profess to future generations.

A quick visit to the ELCA website will inform a person what it is “We as Lutheran Christians believe”.

We believe….

In the Triune God

God created and loves all of creation-the earth, seas and all of the world’s inhabitants

That God’s Son, Jesus Christ, transforms lives through his death on the cross and his new life

We trust that God’s Spirit is active in the world.

We are part of God’s unfolding plan

When we gather for worship, we connect with believers everywhere

When we study the Bible or hear God’s word in worship, we are drawn more deeply into God’s own saving

story

These convictions, shared by Christians from many different Christian traditions are expressed in statements of

belief—CREEDS. The Creeds, which are not in the bible, are our human attempt to describe the immensity of God.

These ecumenical creeds that Lutherans affirm and use in worship confess the faith of the church through the ages

and around the world. We even have a “trinity” of creeds –

HOLY LAND TOUR – ISRAEL AND JORDAN We are already starting to receive reservations for our Tour to Israel and Jordan: February 26 – March 8, 2014. The brochures are here, so if you are interested in finding out more about this tour, or if you know of someone who might be interested, please contact Pastor Schmidt. Having had the privilege of touring Israel twice before, I can honestly say that a tour to Israel is more than a tour – it is a pilgrimage! Seeing the actual sites where the Biblical events took place makes the Bible truly come alive, and is a faith strengthening experience! In addition, the “Rose Red” city of Petra, Jordan is a wonder to behold! Make your plans now to join with us!

ADULT

LEARNING

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

The summer months are the time that we plan for our fall offerings of classes. As we look to the fall, while the pastors certainly do have ideas, we are interested in what you would like to study for our Adult Sunday School Class in the fall. Please let Pas-tor Chris or Pastor Schmidt know concerning your suggested top-ics!

THURSDAY MORNING

B I B L E S T U D Y

We have already chosen our topic for this fall, which will be-gin following Labor Day: Martin Luther and the Lutheran Reformation. We have also chosen our “study book,” Luther the Reformer by James Kittelson, the late professor of Reformation History at Luther Seminary. Pastor

Schmidt has copies of the book if you would like some good summer reading; the cost is $17.00. We of course will also use visuals as several movies and other DVDs have been produced concerning the life and work of Luther, plus the Reformation. Pastor Schmidt will be leading these sessions and we meet Thursday mornings, 9:30 -11:00 AM; why not make your plans now to join us this fall as we together study our heritage and traditions. Did you know that more has been written about Martin Luther than any other person who has ever lived with the exception of Jesus???

WOMEN’S CIRCLE

BIBLE STUDY

“In Good Company: Stories of Biblical Women,” will be the Women’s Circle Bible study beginning this fall. We will look at stories of women from both the Old and New Testaments as well as stories of contemporary women.

Ladies, please check the calendar for the various Circles meeting schedule.

Women, all of our Circles would be pleased to welcome you as a guest or member!

PASTOR’S SCHEDULES & CONTACT NUMBERS Just a reminder concerning our Pastor’s

schedules. Pastor Chris’ day off is Friday and in an emergency she can be contacted at 248-231-5091. Her email

address is [email protected]. Pastor Schmidt’s day off remains on Monday and his home phone number for

emergencies is 313-882-3520. His email address is [email protected].

Church office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with office closed for lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

THE LUTHERAN FAITH

Also, starting after Labor Day, Pastor Schmidt will be offering a Wednesday evening class

titled “The Lutheran Faith.” We will be exploring together the basic tenants of the Lutheran belief; which should be an interesting tie-in to our Thursday morning class on Luther and the

Reformation. All are encouraged to join with us and we especially invite new members as well as those who might be interested in being a part of the First English family. We will be

meeting the same time as our Confirmation Classes, so parents of confirmation students this would be a great opportunity for you as well.

Narthex required repair. Our

Board of Church Properties received bids for the above repairs and the Church Council

approved these projects. The total cost was $19,600.00, and

these repairs have now all been completed. If you would like to assist with the cost of this project

the church or place in the offering plate. Please designate your gift for

Our organ at First English is over fifty

years old, and over the past 10 years has had switching components beginning to fail. Because the

original components of the organ console haven’t been manufactured

since the early 1970’s, the console and its related switching need to be rebuilt to have the organ fully

functional again. The Peterson Company, which would do the

console rebuild, estimates repairs to

BOARD OF SOCIAL ACTION

Lunches for LifeBUILDERS’ Kids People say there’s no such thing as a “free” lunch, but thanks to your generous donations, 75 underprivileged children in Detroit will be receiving lunch at Day Camp at Renewal Church on July 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. In just two weeks, we raised over $340!!

The Board of Social Action will be delivering sloppy joes, hot dogs, bread, lunch meat, cheese, fruit cups, cookies and juice boxes – yummy, yes -- to LifeBUILDERS on Thursday, June 27. They’ll refrigerate the food and transport food and kids to Renewal Church in Warren in July.

Again, thanks for making summer special for kids who often have limited food once school is out.

COLUMBARIUM FOR FIRST ENGLISH

First English Lutheran Church has approved a Columbarium Project for our facility. When sufficient niches are sold, the Columbarium will be placed in the narthex

(please see computer drawing on the bulletin board in the main hallway). Before construction begins, the companion niches, which hold two urns, will be sold for $1,500.00; after construc-

tion begins they will sell for $1,800.00. We will give the congregation sixty days notice before raising the price to $1,800.00. Niches will be assigned on a “first come-first-served” basis, with

members being able to choose the location of their niche within the Columbarium. To date nine double niches have been sold. If sufficient niches are not sold, all funds will be returned to those

who purchased niches. If you have any questions please speak to Pastor Schmidt.

Starting in September the Evangelism board would like to host “Cards/Dinner/Cards” on the 4th

Wednesday every month. Our plan is to have cards or games from 4 pm to 5:30 pm, followed by

dinner, then another fellowship/cards time till 8 pm. We hope this will provide an early time for

those who like to be home early – and a later time for those who work. Please let one of us know if

this is something you would participate in and which time would work for you. This is an event for

all ages, singles, couples, adult fellowship. We would like a regular time of fellowship for our con-

gregation. We also invite parents while their children are in catechism to join us. The Evangelism

Board will provide the dinner with a free will offering to offset costs.

KEEPING IN TOUCH

Our goal is to contact all of the members whom we can by e-mail, phone or regular mail. All mem-

bers of the church are important and we see this as an opportunity, as we said, of “keeping in

touch.” We want to hear what is on your mind. Do you have any suggestions for programs, any

concerns about the ministry of First English, any special needs or whatever? We simply, but im-

portantly, want to remind all members that we are the church together! Thank you for your sup-

The Apostle’s Creed

The Nicene Creed

ThAthanasian Creed

The Apostle’s Creed is of course the most familiar. Martin Luther included it in his Small catechism as the creed

we should teach to our children. The Nicene Creed was adopted at the Council of Nicea in the year 325 – we will

be reciting it as part of our worship together today! The Athanasian Creed, the last to be written and the longest is

rarely used during worship. Like the Nicene Creed, it was written in defense of the true teachings of scripture and to

reject the false teachings of the day.

Trying to comprehend the immensity of God…. Something people of every age have been trying to do since the

beginning of time!

On my recent trip to Washington DC, my husband Bob and I had the opportunity to spend time at the Smithsonian

National Air and Space Museum. We both agreed that the highlight of the day was the Imax theater 3D movie about

the Hubble Space telescope.

The amazing images of distant galaxies, made possible through this human invention showed us the absolute

grandeur of God’s creation and the vastness of all there is yet to discover and how small our human heads were in

comprehending the beauty and vastness of his creation. Truly mind boggling!

Clearly our logic of trying to fit God into a nicely defined box with very distinct boundaries of:

God is this - God is not that!

Or, God acts this way - But God does not act that way.

Does not work.

Our “Trinity of Creeds” serve us well. They provide the basis and structure from which we can in our own limited

human understanding profess our faith in the Triune God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – the One true God. Just

as our scriptures have given us a written record of God’s Word, so too our Creeds give us written testament of our

beliefs.

Trying to comprehend the immensity of God…. Something people of every age have been trying to do since the be-

ginning of time! We like the little girl, trying to empty the ocean into one small hole in the sand, have a very long

way to go in discovering and understanding the immensity and imponderability of our ONE TRUE GOD.

As we process our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed in a few minutes, I ask that you pay special attention to the

words and reflect on our human understanding of our immense God, creator of our vast universe- of all that is seen

and unseen, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, the Lord. The giver of life.

Amen.
