CYC Board Highlights

At the December 19 Board of Directors meeting, the following actions were taken:

l Approved the 2020 CYC Budget.l Approved all applications for new members.

The next board meeting will be held January 16.

HappY New Year! I’m Amie Crosby, continuing Membership Chair, and this is 2020!

We are having a very successful Winter Membership Drive with 19 members already signed up. This promotion runs through March 31. Please call the office for details if you know someone who might be inter-ested. Thank you to all who are referring members to our fine club. I would love to meet each of you, so please introduce yourself or ask any of the staff if I’m at the club when you are there.

I hope everyone had a very happy holiday season and is looking forward to another “funtastic” year at CYC. Continue to watch for updates on the exciting events planned.

The Membership Committee isn’t just about recruiting new members, but also retention of our current mem-bers. If you ever have any ideas, questions, suggestions or concerns, I encourage and welcome all members to come to a membership meeting or send me an email at [email protected]. We meet the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Boardroom.

HouSe and GroundSIt Is a real honor to move up to Vice Commodore and tackle my next assign-ment as Chair of the House and Grounds Committee. I’m ready to move up from overseeing fun, as former Entertainment Committee Chair, to overseeing work.

One thing I’ve learned before even moving into the House and Grounds role is that there are plenty of opinions about what needs to be done to spruce up the club. I’m keeping a list of the suggestions you have given me, and it’s a long one!

PC Tim Roberts, who is co-owner of a construction company, recently walked me through the construction history. We looked at projects that are a “must” and those that would definitely enhance the club.

We’ll be sorting through the list of possible projects and prioritize them at the House and Grounds meeting Tuesday, January 7, at 6 p.m. It’s your club—please join us to decide its future.

2020… a New Year, a new decade and the beginnings of another great cycle at Clearwater Yacht Club! We’ve added new members to our board and rotated the Com-modore positions once again, allowing me the privilege of being your Commodore for 2020. My thanks and respect go to our past Commodore, Phil Beauchamp, who led our club through another successful year of fun and boating as he carried on the traditions of so many commodores from years past. My thanks also to the members who have volunteered to serve on the Board of Direc-tors and many of our critical committees. This year’s board has a great mix of seasoned and newer members who I am sure will continue to guide our club into a future of growth and fun, while bringing new ideas and energy.

Thanks also to the great staff at CYC, led by Chef John and our GM, Tom. Our club wouldn’t be the “home away from home” that it is without the efforts of our extended family—the front and back staff. Please remember to thank them.

Our club year began with the Change of Watch, a packed house, and didn’t slow down. December was full of activities, both up and downstairs, despite several weather challenges.

Our northern members are back and adding to the fun. Gregory Crist, your new Rear Commodore and chair of the Entertainment Committee, has his group planning for bigger and better activities moving forward. Mary Kay Delk, our new Vice Commodore and chair of House and Grounds, is already working to make our facilities even better.

2020 is going to be a great year at CYC, and I am very proud to be a part of it.

See you around the club!

CommodoreGreg Garner

HappY New Year! We hope every-one enjoyed the holiday season and is looking forward to a prosperous and happy new year. It’s been a pleasure to be around the club. Thanks to all of you who took the time and effort to decorate your boats for the boat parade December 14. They looked great! The evening was a huge success and fabulous time.

We’ve attended to some of our issues with our fleet, including a new VHF radio for Pegasus, and we are in the process of seeing to a list of fairly minor fixes for the others. I hope you’ve noticed the effort made to keep our docks and “poop” decks cleaner from our friendly feathered friends. It’s

2020 SUNSET CRUISE SCHEDULE

*Happy New yearThey that go down to the sea in ships, that do busi-ness in great waters, these see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep. Psalms 107, 23-24

I wIsH to thank all our members who have dedi-cated so much time and volunteer effort in making our Yachting Committee so successful in 2019.

CYC Yachting is supporting the Clearwater Sailing Center’s 420 regatta January 25-26, as well as their Contender class Midwinter regatta January 31-February 2. There are opportunities for any mem-ber to be on the Race Committee for these events. There is no better way to watch these exciting races than to participate on the Race Committee.

The sunset cruises resume in January. See the sched-ule to know when to arrive at the Tiki Bar. We could

always use a few more boats!

As we start the New Year, we will be banging the drum for more volunteers for the Laser Midwinter regatta (Feb-ruary 19–23) and the Sunfish regattas (March 14–22). People who can volunteer their boats and their time for these events are always appreciated. There are landside as well as waterside volunteer opportunities.

Also, Yachting Committee is sponsoring its Race Com-mittee 101 seminar February 1. This is open to anyone who wants to learn how to run a sailboat race and what to expect. As always, we will be looking to shanghai as many participants as we can to help out with our regattas.

Anyone who has an interest in helping out with our Race Committee efforts, please do not hesitate to e-mail: [email protected].

a major and ongoing effort. Thanks to all those who take it upon themselves to help!

This is a great time of year to cruise—and no better com-pany than our fantastic Cruisers club. Just got back from one in Bradenton, at the newly remodeled Twin Dolphin Marina with floating docks! Contact Don and Joan Carter for the schedule of upcoming trips. Don’t miss out; it’s a blast.

On the home front, we’ve recently had some issues with trespassers who have overstepped many boundaries. This is unacceptable and requires some immediate attention on our part. We’ll be looking into possible solutions such as gates and cameras to deter future incidents. If you see someone out of place, please let us know what you may have seen. Thanks.

Yes, 2019 was an incredible year, and we certainly look forward to enjoying 2020 with our new Commodore and bridge. Please be a part of it. You won’t be disappointed! See you soon!

Sailing ActivitiesBy Claire englishJunior Yachtsman of the Year

Congratulations to Andrew Covington who was awarded Junior Yachtsman of the Year. Andrew started sailing with the IRFSA at the age of five in our summer program. He worked hard, paid attention, learned the skills, and excelled as a sailor. He progressed to a Junior Leader, where he demonstrated maturity, patience and an amazing ability to work with kids both older and younger than him. He is very respectful of adult leaders and instructors.

He is often one of the first to start working on tasks and works diligently to make sure that tasks are com-pleted correctly. He enjoys his time teaching, talking

and listening to young, intrepid sailors and, even at 6’6”, will get into a Walker Bay 8 to sail with them when needed. Andrew is the image of what we expect from our sailing program. I am proud to say that he not only exemplifies our mission of teaching the virtues of team-work, compassion, patience and perseverance through teaching the basics of small boat sailing but he lives by that mission too.

CoNGratulatIoNs, PC David Billing, who officially became a U. S. Citizen December 6. In a ceremony at the Office of Immigration in Tampa, David took the Oath of Allegiance to the U. S., turned in his Green Card and received his Certificate of Naturalization.

“I am very grateful for the opportunities this country has afforded me, and it was high time to make it official,” said David.

This process actually began more than 40 years ago. David worked for a consulting firm in London and traveled to the U.S. in the 1970s on busi-ness. When Greyhound Computer Corporation purchased his company in 1978, David was offered a position in Phoenix design-ing the company’s software. He replied he would accept if management helped him obtain his Green Card. With that David became a resident with most of the privileges of citizenship—except the right to

vote and permanent status.

In the 1980s, David became self-employed, con-sulting in several locations around the U.S. An avid sailor, David looked to settle in a loca-tion that afforded him opportunities to enjoy yachting and lived in many lo-cales before heading south to Florida.

David vividly

remembers his first morn-ing in Clearwater. It was August 1988. He was traveling north on Gulf Blvd and planned to look into Clearwater Yacht Club. As he came over the Sand Key Bridge, David took in the breathtaking view and knew he had found home. Unfortunately, it was a Monday, and CYC was closed. He had to wait until Tuesday to join.

Since becoming a part the club, David has con-tributed greatly to its success, serving in many capacities, including Commodore in 1996-97. He helps organize many of the national/international sailing competitions put on by CYC and CCSC. He continues to serve on the

Board of Trustees as well.David renewed his green card twice (every ten

years), and it was up for renewal in 2019. He decided it would be a great time to “go for it” and obtain citizenship. The process took around nine months. David had to fill out a lengthy application, undergo extensive back-ground checks as well as study U.S. civics in preparation for a 100-question oral exam. “At least I did not have to take an English language test,” he laughs. “I did have to assure officials I have never been a Communist.

Bravo, Commodore, on your latest accomplishment!

tHe Gulls were pleased to again sponsor Breakfast with Santa. And boy what a breakfast it was!

When Santa arrived at the club Saturday morning, December 21, over 30 children, parents, grandparents and friends welcomed him. All the good little boys and girls got to sit on Santa’s lap, tell him what they wanted for Christmas and get a small gift from Santa’s helpers, Tama Mitchell and her grandson Carter.

Anita Cafferty played wonderful Christmas music on the piano and accompanied Theresa Haverkamp, Mary-Lou Spoto, Sandie Ramsden and all the kids in singing “Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” After a reading by Theresa of “The Night Before Christ-mas,” Santa’s Workshop was opened. Thanks to Connie Boblenz, the children were able to decorate Christmas trees to take home.

The club did a wonderful buffet highlighted by by Bob Freiberg’s custom pancakes.

Our own server, Jason Collins, was on hand with all his balloon “stuff.” Every child and even some adults went home with balloon art.

If you didn’t make it, you missed a great event. We’d recommend you mark your calendar now for next year.

We finished off the year with our an-nual Christmas party in December with a delicious turkey dinner and a fun gift exchange. Now we are getting ready for the 2020 cruising year.

Starting off in January, we are going to downtown Tampa for a weekend, then in February to the Westshore Yacht Club in South Tampa, and in March a trip to downtown St. Petersburg.

To be part of our group, just come to our monthly meetings the second Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the dry dock at the club. We have got a great group of fun people and we are always looking for new members. Please come!

Thank you again for a fun year.

Chaplain’s LogBy Fleet Chaplain Father Bob wagenseil

IF we aDults sometimes find ourselves wondering what the future will look like, then I have good news this month. Based off what I saw on December 7, 2019, during the Ted Irwin “Feed the Hungry” Memorial Sail-A-Thon, we are living in the midst of some incredibly generous, caring and talented young people who are dedicated to making a positive difference for our community. With cash and food donations totaling nearly $1,000, our Intrepid Sailors made it possible for “the hungry to be fed” and “the poor to hear good news.” They could have been hanging out with their friends at the Largo Mall, but they chose instead to take what they love

(sailing) and put that love to work for those in need during the holiday season.

Those of us who were privileged to cheer them on received a gift, as well: we saw firsthand that our young people from CYC/Indian Rocks Family Sailing and Clearwater Commu-nity Sailing are charting a course into the future that will make the world a better place in years to come.

Thanks to our Intrepid Youth Sailors and the many adult volunteers who support them as mentors, teachers and financial donors, I, for one, will enter the New Year with a renewed sense of hope for the days that lie ahead.

May your New Year be filled with Blessings!Fr BobFleet Chaplain [email protected]

and healthy as we move forward to 2020! To all our fine members: Thank you for another great year!

Your support of our dining operation—whether upstairs in the Grille or Dining Room, or downstairs at the Tiki Hut or Dry Dock—helped make the year. Many of you supported us by hosting your private parties here, from receptions to birth-days to graduations, and most everything in between!

All our club functions, from casual to formal, were also very well attended. Believe me, it makes a huge difference to the club’s financial health when the restaurant operation always stays busy. Keeping the place busy sure helps us keep our great staff, from the servers and bartenders to the galley crew you may rarely see…THANK YOU!

As to private parties, we already have many booked for 2020. So…if there’s a date you are considering for a special occasion, it is best to call now and see if it’s available. Look ahead to the birthdays and/or milestone dates you care about, and plan on partying here. Ask any member who has hosted a private party here, and they’ll tell you what fun we have!
