Cluvigcr longiconti.s P. W. J. Mti ller is distributed throughout Europe except fbr itsnorthern parts and the Mediterranean subregion (Besuchet 1974). Within this rather widerange, however, the findings of this are generally quite sporadic and rare. The same situationhas been in the territory of the Íbrmer Czechoslovakia, data in the |iteratr'rre on the occurrenceoÍ C. ltlttg, icorrris in its individual parts being very scarce.

The first record in the tbrmer Czechoslovakia comes from Bohemia tiom the middleoť the l9th century and documents the occurrence of C. longicornis at Zívist near Pragtte(Lokay sen. 1860). Two major papers on Bohemian myrmecophilous insects, containingtirrther data on the occurrence oť C. longicornis, were published at the beginning of tlre20th centtrry. Lokay jun. (1905) repeatedly tbund the species at Závist near Pragtre, zrnd Ror"rbal (1905) reported it, in addit ion to that, t iom the wider enviróns of Prague(Pralra' Vrané, Nemě|kov' Chuch|e and Závist) and ttrrthermore tiom Sušice in southernBo|remia. oť the later comprehensive papers on Bohemian myrmecophi|ous insects. on|yRoubal (1949) reports its occurrence in eastern Bohemia (Choceň' Ustí nad orlicQ' Thepapers on myrnrecoph i lous beet |es by Rambousek and Samšiňák do not ment ionC. lotrgjcornis. Mti l ler (1863) did not include the species in his f irst l ist of Moravianbeetle species. In a second, more detailed list of beetle species of Moravia and AustrianSi lesia. Reitter ( ltt70) records a single f inding of C. Iortgicornis by A. Fleischer in theTěšínské Beskydy Mts. (beneath stones among minr'rte yel|ow ants in April' very rare). T|tespecies has not been l isted by Stejskal (1925), whose paper is st i l l the only evaluationoť rather extensive col|ections of Moravian myrmecophilous beet|es. Entomo|o-uy. Moravian Musettm, tbr a number oť years' His collection is deposited in thatdepartnrent and was examined by P. Lauterer. A general note on the possible occurrencec>f C ' lon14i t :orrr l . r in Morav ia is tbund in FIe ischer 's ( l927- l930) . .Review oť Beet les ' ' .p' lótt (sep. p.): ..everywhere but altogether more rare, likewise among ants ktsit,t's 'fluvu'tanrJ utti ltratus". Rous (1993) has not included this species in his latest l ist of the Moravianpselaplrid fauna' Batelka (l993, Klapalekiana 29:. |6.|) published one Íinding as tl newspecies fbr the Moravian tauna. The occurrence of C. longiconrls in Slovakia has beenreportecl in scattered localit ies summarized by Roubal (1930) fbr the first tirne. The firstrecord dates back to the late l9th century (Kuthy 1896) and another fbllows shortlyt l rereat ier (Bolkay |907: Ká ln ica both records ex Ror-rbal l930). Addi t ional loca l i t ieswere strpplemented by Rorrbal (|. c.): Trenčín' Hronská Breznica, Rirnavskí Sobota. Newdata have been published by Franc (1992) who states that a relatively large number ofÍin<lings at an earlieÍ date has been known fiom Slovakia but that at present the species |rasbeen on|y rarely co|lected in the |ocalities at Drrbová, Jab|onov nad Turňou ancl Čabraď' Hisobservartion that the species inhabits warrn habitats agrees with our own results.

T|re material collected by rrs is partly deposited in the collections of the Department oťEntonlo|ogy, Moravian Musettm in Brno' and partIy in the private collections oť P. Bezděčkaand P. Průdek. The Íindings are largely the resrrlts of extensive taunal investigations of P.Bezděčka (l7 collections) as by-products of investigations into the ant tjruna. Un|essotherwise statecl in the text tbr each individual finding' P. Bezděčka is the collector anclperson responsible fbr the identification. At present, this author has been preparing a morecornprehesive paper on the distribution of Formicoidea in Bohernia and Moravia, basecl onthe new taxonomy of th is insect group (Bezděčka, in prep.) . The numer ica l des ignat ionoťfhunistic qrradrats comprising each locality are stated in accordance with Zelený (1912).

At present, Claviger longiconús Mii ller is none too rare in Moravia and we havecollected it several times during the past 40 years. Our first finding dates tiom 1951, ourlatest one tiom 1993.

In all. we have tbund 33 specimens in l9 collections. The beetles mostly occurre(lsingly: as exceptions we have tbund, in one ant colony, 3 specimens and in the subsequentyear .5 specimens (with an unidentiÍied species oť the subg. Chthonolasius); once we founc|( l spec inrens with L.7e l r . r l Se i fert , and 2 spec imens each with L, jens i Se iť. . andL. brwttrcus (Latr.). Most tiequently' C, lottgicorniJ occurred with ants oť the subg'Cltthorrolasiu.r: 25 specimens in l2 collections; with L. umbratus (NVl.), 6 exx. in6 co l lect ions; with L. brunneus (Latr .) , 6 exx. in 5 co l lect ions; with L. jcr ts i Se i fert .l0 exx. in 4 collections; with an unidentified species of the subg. Chthottolusius, 8 exx.in 2 collections in a single colony; and one specimen each with L. alienus (Foerst.),L. platvtlxorax Seifert, and L. rabaurli (Bondroit). The species has also been tbuncltogether with Claviger testaceus Preyssler in a number oť specimens oť both species.

Most of the specimens (26 exx.) have been found beneath small and flat stones (in12 cases). In tbur cases, I specimen each was tbund beneath the bark of tree trunks orstunlps and in one case 2 specimens. In tree stumps the species has been fbund in two cases,I specimen each. These observations suggest that the beetle, like the related C. testctceu.r,has the habit oť warming itself beneath sunlit stones and bark' especially in spring, togethe|with the host ants but rarely together with their larvae or pupae.

f'he beetles have been tbund at low elevations ranging between 180 and 400 m; rarelyin floocfpfain fbrests (180-270 m) with L. brwuteus (Latr.) (4 cases) and L plttty-thoraxSe iťe r t ( l c a se ) . a l l t hosecases l spec imeneach ; mos t t i equen t l y theyhavebeen fbund inxerotlrernlic, oÍien limestone loca|ities on south-fbcing hillsides' even|y distributed between2.50 and 400 m (occasionally a|so 200 m) above sea-leve|, comprising all other |4 Íinc|ingstotall ing 28 specimens.

The c|avigerid un<ler study rarely occurred Íbr the first time around mid-March (12ancl l7 March. l ex. each), most tiequent|y between 3l. i i i. and 23. tv. (9 cases, ló exx.).fiequently also between early May and the first decade of June (1. v.-8. vi., 12 exx.), inwhich period there is sti l l enough moisture on the surface of ant colonies. A single Íindingwas rnncle in summer (10. vii i., I ex.) and the species occurred singly sti l l in the lst half ol 'autt ln ln ( l t ] . x . -2 ' x i ' ,2 Í indings oť l ex. each) '
