Building world urged to take swift action RSPB Scotland is challenging the building industry to follow the lead of householders and take action for swifts. The conservation charity believes that if the building and roofing industry, developers and local authorities would take swifts to heart like householders have, it could ease a housing crisis for the declining birds. With their scythe-shaped wings, swifts are one of the world’s most aerial birds. But despite performing almost every aspect of their life cycle on the wing, including sleeping and mating, these summer migrants must land in order to lay eggs. Over the past decade, swift populations have suffered serious declines of almost 30 %, meaning this unique species is now of conservation concern. The reason for this drop in the number of swifts is unclear and is something RSPB Scotland is currently trying to understand. However, as swifts nest in roofs and eaves of buildings it is thought the loss of traditional nest sites through building improvement or demolition may be a cause for concern. Last year thousands of people took part in a RSPB Scotland survey to help identify where swifts are seen. Results showed that all the swifts recorded were found nesting on buildings. RSPB Scotland believes that home and business owners, builders and developers all play a fundamental role in helping this species. And the charity hopes that more can be done to protect existing nests and provide more nesting opportunities in new buildings and renovations. The swift search is back again this year and RSPB Scotland is appealing to everyone to look out for groups of screaming swifts at roof level, a good sign they are breeding nearby, or where they have seen swifts nesting – perhaps entering a hole in the building or under a roof. Swifts are some of the last summer migrants to arrive but one of the first to leave, remaining in the UK for a few short months from the start of May to the end of August. Pint-sized butterfly beats extinction in Hertfordshire Britain's tiniest butterfly, the small blue, has made big news by returning to Hertfordshire after being extinct in the county for eight years. This dinky delight, which is barely bigger than a five pence piece, was spotted at Aldbury Nowers Nature Reserve near Tring recently, where Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust (HMWT) have been carefully managing the habitat to encourage butterflies to thrive. It seems the unassuming little insect decided to put in a special appearance for National Insect Week, which runs until 27 June. Local resident Martin Hicks, who made the discovery, has surveyed the butterflies at Aldbury Nowers NR since 2003 every single week without fail during the summer months. "Aldbury is fantastic for butterflies - we have species doing well here that are declining elsewhere, like the green hairstreak, dingy skipper and grizzled skipper. I really hit the jackpot on my 235th survey though! I could hardly believe it when I spotted the small blues." The return of the species to Aldbury Nowers NR is thanks to extensive work carried out by Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust to encourage the plants that butterflies favour, such as kidney vetch in the case of the small blue. Particularly important is the grazing of the land by HMWT’s own flock of sheep, which creates just the right environment for fussy butterfly species. Paul Thrush, Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust's Reserves Officer said: "It's great that the small blues are back. Four years ago we launched a major restoration project at Aldbury and part of the work we do involves removing scrub and vegetation, allowing rarer, smaller plants like kidney vetch to return. With the help of funding from SITA, Chilterns AONB and Natural England and the dedication of volunteers and HMWT staff, this reserve has become the best place in the county for butterflies."
