Thank you for taking a look and downloading this freebie! I hope you find it very useful andinformative for your students. This product is intended to give students an overview of CivilRights and help them build prior knowledge in a timely fashion. You can build on this 2-3 dayproject in many ways, including historical fiction book clubs, classroom read alouds, etc.

Preparation:* Print and cut apart the Era cards (in blue) You may use these to further group topics on yourclassroom timeline or you may choose not to use them (pg 8)* Print and cut apart the timeline event cards (pgs 9-15)

    * Decide how you will have students jigsaw their learning. One way is to have them create thepersonal timeline that is included. Decide how you will put together the timelines. (pgs 16-27). Iprint my booklets back and front and then spiral bound on the left. You may like to do it anotherway. If you plan to study this time period in more detail, it would be worth the time to create thebooklets. * Decide whether or not you will compile the event cards onto a classroom timeline. I usebutcher paper with a simple line down the middle and add the student cards on with tape. Then,we can flip them over if we need to read about the event again. It would also create a great

hallway display.* A Civil Rights Timeline Overview is included for your reference (pg 3). You may also decide tocopy it for student use.

Day 1: Using the event cards (pgs 9-15) give students one topic from the Pre Civil Rights/CivilRights Eras to research. Students record the date of the event on the given line and draw apicture/symbol to represent the eventthis is considered the front. On the back, students writea detailed description of the event. If you have extras, fast finishers can complete additional

cards. (See pg 28 for an example).

Complete research for the events using the internet. The cards were created largely from usingthe African American World Timeline from PBS
