Most parts o the modernUniversity have their origins in theNorthampton Institute which wasounded in 1894 as a result o theCity o London Parochial CharitiesAct o the previous year and thegenerosity o the Earl o Northampton. The Institute aimedto provide education and welareor local people, with the objectiveo ‘the promotion o the industrialskill, general knowledge, health andwell-being o young men and womenbelonging to the poorer classes’.Six dierent departments educatedstudents: Mechanical Engineeringand Metal Trades, Artistic Crats,Applied Physics and ElectricalEngineering, Horology, Electro-Chemistry and Domestic Economyand Women’s Trades. out in today’s School o Engineeringand Mathematical Sciences.
