The holidays have begun, and the new year is just around the corner. I want to take this time to thank all of our advertisers for being a part of this magazine and a big thank you to all of our wonderful readers. It is always uplifting to hear you comment on how much you enjoy

our magazine and its content. We will continue to do our best to provide something of interest for everyone.

There are a few interesting food days this month. The 1st is Eat a Red Apple Day. Apples are quite healthy and tasty, so I will look forward to finding a new way to enjoy my apple. If you are looking for a recipe using apples, check out Charlottes Applesauce Bake. It looks great. The 2nd is Fritter Day. If you have leftover apples, you could add it to your fritter for a great treat. The 8th is National Brownie Day. This is a favorite of mine, so I will have to make an effort to enjoy a chocolaty brownie delight. There are many more great foodie days in the month so pace yourself.

I look forward to the 21st. It is the shortest day of the year. That means the days will start getting longer and I will appreciate having more daylight. It also gives the kids more time to play in the snow. There are several sledding hills and a couple outside skating rinks in the area to enjoy. If there is an abundance of snow, there might be a snow man and his family in the front yard!

The 7th is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. On the day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor many servicemen and civilians were killed. We should all take a moment to remember that day in history and send blessings to those who serve to protect us.

I know shopping, school programs and other holiday gatherings can keep you on the fast track, so take a quiet break once in a while. Try a play or concert where you can relax and enjoy yourself. Stop after for an evening snack so when you get home you can get a good nights sleep.

Buying gifts over the internet for some may seem quick and easy, but for me, shopping local and taking in all of the sights and sounds of the holiday season put a bigger smile on my face and the joy of Christmas in my heart. It also helps support the local shops in our area that we would hate to be without all year long.

Drive safe, stay warm and enjoy all that is going on around you.

Merry Christmas

Have you been daydreaming of remodeling and updating your home? With a new year upon us, it’s a great time to start thinking about what changes you want to make. Giving your home a facelift may be just what you need! The Corridor has some of the highest-quality businesses to work with to make your remodel a reality.

When undertaking a home improvement project, first decide if it’s a large project that would benefit from having a general contractor. A general contractor usually chooses the subcontractors to work with, though homeowners can choose if they have a preference. General contractors do their part of the work, and oversee the timeline of the subcontractors work, helping make a large project run smoothly for the homeowner.

For a smaller project, the homeowner can work directly with the subcontractors; likely minimizing the cost of the project, but putting the overseeing of the project on the homeowner. To get the work done right you will want to hire subcontractors that are the best in their field, and that can handle any unexpected hiccups. The subcontractor will do their part in the project and coordination between subcontractors will be done by the homeowner. To minimize the stress, look into the businesses you want to work with thoroughly, and make sure they will accommodate your vision.

These local businesses would be happy to work with you on your next home remodeling project!

Tis the season to say thank you, so from The Vestweber Team to each of our customers, we say THANK YOU! Once again, our loyal clientele and customers allowed us to be one of the top performing real estate teams in the state of Iowa. Both on the residential and commercial sides of the business, we were able to walk alongside over 100 new and existing clients to help them through the process of buying or selling their properties.

It is this special time of year we slow down ever so slightly to simply say thank you. Thank you for the referrals, the kind words, and the business which allows us to help so many people be successful in their real estate endeavors. Thank you to Skogman Realty for being the most successful and supportive brokers in our market and surrounding us with the expertise and talent which makes our client’s more successful. Thank you to our incredible partners and vendors for the support they give our clients and my team of agents. The process of buying and selling should never be done alone. It takes a great group of people to create the success we provide.

When it comes to client services and expertise, we strive to provide the very best our market has to offer. The world of buying and selling real estate is becoming more and more complex every year. Working with a professional team of agents like The Vestweber Team at Skogman Realty will assure you have what you need in advice and counsel. Don’t take your largest asset for granted or trust it to someone trying to sell you a marketing package. When it comes to listing your home, only professional services should be acceptable, and

only experts should be representing you and your home.

As we put 2018 to bed, it is time to begin thinking about 2019. Will you want to sell, or buy, or both? Now is the time to set a meeting with us and begin a strategic plan to accomplish your goals. Maybe this is the year you look at a commercial property. Let us know what we can do to help you. Is this the year you begin to buy rental properties? We can help!

There aren’t many more “classic” rides out there than a ‘55 Chevy. The ‘55 marked the dawn of a new age for Chevrolet with “modern” styling. The bulbous fenders of the ‘40s and early ‘50s were gone – flattened to give it a clean, “modern,” streamlined appearance. It was then affectionately tabbed a “shoebox,” following in the footsteps of the ‘49 and early ‘50s Fords. 1955 was also a banner year with the appearance of V8 power with the first Chevy small block in 265 cu.in./162 hp form. (Between ‘55 and 2011 over 100 million small blocks of various sizes up to 400 cubic inches have been produced!) The basic ‘55 models included the Bel Air, 210 Delray and the 150. Body styles included 2 and 4-door sedans and wagons, including the rare Nomad and sedan delivery, along with the convertible and sport coupe (later tabbed a “hardtop,” as it had no door “post,” with a shorter roof and longer trunk deck than the standard sedans). The 150 came in one-color paint while the others came in 19 two-tone choices.

Ken Kaiser was always a Chevy man who had the “need for speed,” as wife, Karen, can attest. She has early memories of his ‘67 Chevelle, with a wild 396 engine, with a wee tremble in her voice. In May of ‘82, they started looking for a ‘57 Chevy, but all prospects seemed destined to be “homes for wayward mice.” Ken’s brother-in-law, Al, found a “nice ‘55” at a Cedar Rapids Pizza Hut, soon to be headed to a big show at Rydell Chevrolet in Waterloo. Al talked Ken and Karen into taking a look. Ken looked it over and took a test drive, returning to get family members into the car. When he asked Karen what she thought, she replied, “Doesn’t matter. You already bought it?” They picked it up a week later. And a month after that discovered she was pregnant with son number three. All followed in dad’s footsteps. Keith with a ‘66 Chevy II, Nathan with a ‘65 Chevelle and Travis with a ‘72 Corvette, recently sold.

The ‘55 was in “good shape” with black and white paint, the original interior, a 305 engine and Muncie M-20 4-speed trans. The interior was handled first, with black and white “tuck-n-roll” naughahyde. That and flames seemed to be the themes carried throughout the ‘55. Tom Hanson, of Vinton, did the first repaint in ‘91 with the white going to silver. In ‘94, Kaiser won a 350 engine (a Police Interceptor bored to a 355) at a car show raffle in Washington, IA. His dad, who owned Kaiser Tire Center on 16th

Avenue, gave him a stall at the shop and a weekend to make the change. There were other up-grades and car shows along the way in the next several years, with the second repaint occurring late in 2008 at King’s Hot Rod Shop, Keota. Ghost flames were laid down by Chris King on the fenders, the engine compartment wheel-wells and even the dashboard in silver metal-flake over black. The 2-tone works well with the classic Cragar 15” x 8” wheels.

Another major change occurred in 2014 when Ken was diagnosed with liver cancer. The Kaisers continued to drive the ‘55 to many shows and worked on Ken’s bucket list, traveling to many places like Alaska, Hawaii, Gettysburg and California, where they caught some drag races at the famous strip in Pomona. Ken was a big fan of the drags with John

Force being his favorite driver. Later, Karen made a quilt from Ken’s many Force t-shirts and got John and his two racing daughters to autograph it. Their most memorable trip with the ‘55 was to the Tri-5 Nationals in Bowling Green, KY, in August, 2017. Two months later, Ken made his last car show trip to Hopkinton’s Hot Rods & Harleys. Karen made a special effort this year to get to it, in spite of the rainy weather.

Ken wanted Karen to carry on the family tradition of showing the ‘55, so a 200-4R 4-speed automatic with OD tranny was ordered from TCI Automotive and installed in early spring of 2018. Ken passed away soon after on May 29th. The Muncie 4-speed was given to son number two, Nathan, to be installed in his ‘65 Chevelle. (Part II will feature Nathan’s Chevelle in the January issue of City Revealed.)

As winter settles in, cold weather can be a challenge for our pets. To ensure a healthy season for our furry friends, keep the following in mind.1. Some pets are better suited than others for living outdoors. There is a common misconception that dogs and cats will be “fine” if left outside. This is not true. Certain breeds, such as Huskies and Samoyeds are better suited for very cold weather. Puppies and kittens as well as older dogs and cats shouldn’t be outside no matter what type of breed they are. They just don’t have the fat, metabolism, or the full fur coat they need to stay warm when temperatures plunge.2. If your pet is primarily outside, make sure that adequate shelter is provided to shield them from wind, moisture, and cold. Make sure your pets house is well insulated but still large enough for them to be comfortable and able to move around. Several pet and feed stores carry safe heated floor mats or non-electric warm bedding to add heat into your pets house. Deeply bedded straw is another good insulator. Do not use a heat lamp or other type of home heaters though as it can be highly dangerous, and may cause a fire. If your pet is prone to chewing, do not use blankets or material that can be ingested. Cedar shavings can be irritating to the skin, so use with caution depending on your pet’s hair coat.3. Pets need to have fresh water at all times and this time of year the water can freeze easily. Make sure to check the water dish periodically throughout the day and add fresh water as needed. Heated pet bowls are a solution for frigid temperatures. These bowls are very handy to have during the cold winter months, and are usually available in stainless steel or plastic. You can find them at most pet supply vendors and feed stores. 4. Pets that live outdoors usually need additional food (calories) to sustain body temperature and maintain energy and body heat. Please check with your veterinarian to decide if your pet needs additional nutritional intake. 5. Ice can wreak havoc on our four legged friends also. Some de-icers are toxic when ingested (when the pet licks their paws). Make sure to rinse their feet off if your pet has walked where de-icers have been used. 6. If your pet sleeps in the garage, be on the alert for any antifreeze leakage

or antifreeze containers left out where they could spill or be chewed on. Also, do NOT start the car in a closed garage - for your safety

and your pet’s safety - carbon monoxide poisoning is a silent killer.7. Like humans, pets can suffer from

hypothermia and frostbite. The young and the senior pets are especially at risk. Pets with arthritis are prone to

more discomfort in cold and damp environments. And remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet.

Do you ever wish you could go back into the past and change something? Would you like to go back and change the course of events that have led to your life as you now know it? Ronald Mallet made it his life long quest to go back in time and change the course of events in his life. When he was ten years old he lost his father to a heart attack. When that happened, Ronald made it his life mission to build a time machine so he could travel into the past. The mission? To see his father again and warn him to take the necessary steps to prevent an early death, allowing them to be together many more years. The immediate images that come to mind when hearing about a man building a time machine are those of Doctor Emmet Brown from “Back to the Future” or Uncle Rico from “Napoleon Dynamite.” Most people laugh and call it craziness. That’s not the case here at all. Ronald Mallet earned a PhD in Physics and was the 79th African American to do so. He also became a tenured theoretical physicist at the University of Connecticut and is now a Professor Emeritus. What led him into all of this? His deep desire to travel back in time to see his father again. Knowing he would be ridiculed as a laughingstock, he kept his mission to himself for decades. He worked on the physics of time travel, after-hours, in his own home. In those subdued hours alone he made amazing discoveries the physics community is now marveling over. Our deepest motivations will drive us to many things, including our choice of career and how we live our lives. They can also lead to some incredible things. At Christmas we are reminded of the greatest motivation and mission of all time: God’s rescue mission to save mankind. Jesus came, not to rewrite the past, but to rewrite our future. His deepest motivation is love for us. He was born for us so that He could die for us. He came to earth temporarily so through His sacrifice on the cross we could receive His grace and be with Him eternally in heaven. In the midst of the holiday “noise,” remember the real reason for the season - the greatest motivation, mission and gift ever given: Jesus. Merry Christmas!

Many of us consider helping within our community, especially this time of year, but sometimes we don’t know how we can help. You can start by reaching out and helping with these nonprofit events. If you can volunteer more of your time, we urge you to reach out to these organizations throughout the year. This is a great way for adults and children, alike, to put their skills to good use to make a difference in other people’s lives.

For over 120 years, Waypoint (formerly YWCA) has existed as a vital community resource for individuals in crisis. Waypoint offers a variety of proactive services and resources for those experiencing homelessness, poverty, or domestic violence, as well as providing quality childcare; and volunteers help make it possible. Currently Waypoint is collecting new and unwrapped toys, puzzles, books, games and household items to be given away at their annual “Waypoint Wonderland.” Waypoint Wonderland is a celebration that provides holiday gifts to families served by Waypoint. Last year, Waypoint provided gifts to over 500 children in need. Each parent also receives a gift. Donations for this year’s Waypoint Wonderland will be accepted Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm at Waypoint’s main administrative building, located at 318 5th St. SE, Cedar Rapids, through December 11th. For volunteer information, visit www.waypointservices.org.

Local Food Pantries are in need of donations and volunteers also. With the holiday season approaching it’s a good reminder that many people in our community may be without some of the basic necessities we so often take for granted – such as food and shelter. Below is a short list of food pantries that serve the Cedar Rapids area that are in need of volunteers. A complete listing can be found at https://www.foodpantries.org/ci/ia-cedar_rapids.

Our area is blessed to have so many wonderful organizations that help those in need. The reason it works, is you. Volunteers and donations are what make these organizations possible. Consider donating or volunteering this holiday season and throughout the year.

Christmas will be here before we know it and this is the best time of year to enjoy all things FOOD! Thanksgiving was the king of feasts but Christmas treats are not far behind. My absolute favorite times are the weeks in between. Its the time where we can enjoy opening advent calendars, sneak cookie dough while spending family time making holiday cookies, snuggling up on the couch with a warm cup of peppermint cocoa while watching endless hours of Christmas movies, cranking up the holiday music while decorating the tree, hopping in the car to check out Christmas lights, and figuring out where to hide that darn elf again. Those are the best times.

This month we have a couple of recipes to help get you into the holiday spirit. We hope you enjoy them; and just remember, not only are the holidays fun and special, all of the weeks in between are just as memorable. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from my family to yours.

By Charlotte LindeThese are so fun and will create memories to last a lifetime. I especially love #5 now that my kids are older. Enjoy!1. Frosty was here! Every Christmas Eve, there is a knock at the door right around bedtime. The door is opened to find a present and snow tracks. (Coconut flakes and round footprints) The gift is from Frosty the Snowman and he left Christmas Pajamas to keep them all snug in bed for Santa! For me... it means Christmas pictures in the morning are ready to go!2. Santa always seems to leave his glasses and a white glove next to the empty cookie plate, evidence that he really came! The kids love sending his lost items back with a thank you letter for their gifts.3. Elf on a Shelf! Where is “Shelden” today? In the kitchen in a bowl with a wooden spoon and a mess of flour everywhere! This is our newest tradition that we are really enjoying! Anything to help keep my kids in check is a plus in my book! 4. Christmas Pickle~ a tradition of trying to find a small pickle ornament on the Christmas tree. Whoever finds the pickle first receives an extra gift from Santa or gets to open a gift first. Also teaches children to appreciate the Christmas tree before tearing into gifts.5. Wrapping paper unrolled down the hallway. It’s the secret alarm that alerts me to tiny feet trying to sneak out to see the presents! MY NEW ADDITION THIS YEAR:So, since my kids are now older, they have learned to scale the walls to not set off Santa’s Wrapping Paper Alarm System. Yep... I am NOT kidding. SOOOO... this year there will be Saran Wrap blocking the end of our hallway. So they can see...but not sneak in. HEHE. My kids are old enough now that this will be funny. :)6. Make tinsel magical. When Santa comes he leaves tiny Christmas Trees in the children’s rooms with new slippers under the tree. He is also a very messy Santa ~ he leaves tinsel on the bedroom doorknobs, in the slippers and on all of the Christmas Trees. 7. The guess a gift. The guess a gift is so much fun! I love trying to stoop my husband every year because he is excellent at this game! Everyone receives a gift 3 days before Christmas. You have to try and “guess” what the gift is. If you can not guess the gift, you have to wait until Christmas to open it. Last year my husband had a ball of rubber bands and it took him three guesses...rrrrr! I will get him this year! 8. Reindeer snacks. We ALWAYS leave carrots, celery and a big pot of water for the Reindeer outside. Those Reindeer are messy too! They leave chewed up carrots and celery everywhere! ;) What’s really fun is watching those Reindeer (my husband and I) chew it and leave it! 9. Dollar Store. I take my son and daughter to the Dollar Store (at different times) to pick out their gifts for the other family members. It is so adorable to see what they pick out. It only cost a dollar, but to me is priceless.

10. Christmas Ornaments. Every year my husband and I pick out the kids Christmas Ornaments. We Initial and date each one. They love remembering and seeing their ornaments on the tree each year. Someday when they are all grown up, I will give them their ornaments to enjoy with their own families.11. The Magic Key. In our house, we do not have a chimney for Santa to come down, so we have a magic key! Its a HUGE glittery key that we hang on the outside of the front door. Only Santa has the special magic to use the key!12. Spiked Eggnog. Ok...I worked hard, presents are opened, kids are playing, the movie Christmas Story is on, phone calls have been made, and Christmas Dinner is started. It’s time to relax. Its time to enjoy a pretty glass filled with yummy eggnog, topped fresh nutmeg ~and just a smidgen of spiced rum. ;) Ho Ho Ho!

Beforeyoubegin:• Check with your doctor. Almost everyone can exercise safely in the cold, including people with heart and asthma conditions, but you should always consult with your physician before starting a workout routine. • Protect your extremities. Try wearing a thin pair of gloves, under a pair of heavier gloves. Buy exercise shoes a half-size larger to allow room for socks. Don’t forget the hat, headband and/or facemask; 30 to 40 percent of

your body heat is lost through your head.• Layeriton! Exercise generates a considerable amount of heat that can make you feel like it is 30 degrees warmer than it really is. Dress in layers that you can remove when you start to sweat and can put back on as needed. • Knowthewindchill factor. Wind can penetrate your clothes and remove the insulating layer of warm air that surrounds your body.

Remember, everything you do counts. Every activity counts in your quest to stay fit and flexible in body and mind. Whether you’re getting your exercise in the toasty warmth of your own home, or braving the elements for activities you can only do when the temperatures drop, it’s best to get your blood pumping every day. With a positive attitude and a little creativity, you can make the winter months an enjoyable season for making new friends and trying new activities.
