UPStealth® Battery Backup System Proves to be City of Sacramento’s Intelligent, Reliable, Money Saving, Environmentally Safe Solution for Critical Rail and Traffic Intersection Needs “The UPStealth met all three of our city goals: To have a battery backup system that is reliable, powerful and holds a small footprint; to have a technology that is green and safe to use; to have a proven customer service component to address equipment failures quickly and easily. The UPStealth has now become the City of Sacramento’s standard.” Norm Colby City Operations General Supervisor Challenge: The City of Sacramento had been installing lead-acid battery backup systems at rail crossings and intersections with high traffic and power issues. Over the course of time, the City found that eighty percent of these lead-acid battery backup systems were no longer working, with failures leading to potential hazmat issues. One of those major intersections, near Rio Linda and Bell Avenue, was of particular concern for the City and a nearby school. Instability in the utility line power was consistently causing circuit breakers to trip inside the cabinet causing the intersection to go dark or into flash. This increased potential safety issues for the intersection and the community. With over 700 signalized intersections and growing, the City knew they would be unable to support a growing deployment of lead-acid battery backup systems. Turning Point: Sacramento has become a national Smart Cities leader. Wanting to apply green technologies in the transportation department, engineers began the hunt to replace its lead-acid batteries with a product that could meet specific goals: to have a battery backup system that is intelligent, reliable, powerful, and requiring a smaller footprint; to have a technology that is green and safe to use; to have a proven customer service component to address equipment failures quickly and easily. Solution: The City of Sacramento’s City Operations General Supervisor, Norm Colby learned about the UPStealth--the first Nickel-Zinc, bendable battery backup system--which at the time was still in the design stage. Once the product became available, city engineers tested it over the course of two years--simulating brownouts, blackouts, battery failure and heavy loads. As Norm Colby puts it, “the UPStealth performed beautifully” through every test. Since the UPStealth has been installed at the Rio Linda and Bell Avenue, there have been no issues of circuit breakers tripping. The City has begun a process of replacing the lead-acid battery backup systems in key intersections and crossings where light rail is expanding. Challenge: The City of Sacramento had been installing lead-acid battery backup systems at rail crossings and intersections with high tra ic and power issues.

Results: The UPStealth met all project goals. It is now the City of Sacramento’s standard for battery backup systems because of the following unique advantages:

• Form factor--flat bendable design allows it to fit inside existing tra ic cabinet. No additional expense needed to build a piggyback or secondary cabinet.

• Long life cycle and no maintenance.• Signals keep running despite continued surges from power company.• Lighter weight leads to increased worker safety.• Increased reliability, if one battery cell goes down, its smart technology adapts and operates on the others.• Saves money with a lower Total Cost of Ownership.• Protects the technology installed at the intersection. Constantly monitors lines looking for any disruption. Switches over before a brownout or power has gone out. When power is restored, the UPStealth studies the line for two to three minutes watching for steady conditions. No down time during switch.• Peace of mind that railroad crossings are operating correctly. • No hazmat threat.• Excellent customer service.

“The UPStealth saves us money. We don’t have to go out and condition the UPStealth as we did the lead-acid batteries. We no longer have the huge cost for on-call, a er hours and during work hours maintenance. It’s a huge amount of money for our sta to keep going out there. Now with the UPStealth, we’re saving thousands of dollars a year.”

“The UPStealth’s flexible design is really appealing. I don’t have to buy another cabinet. It just slides into the dead space not being used or can be configured to fit under shelves, on a door panel or on the sides of the racks. The fact the battery is green and energy e icient on top of that is just icing on the cake!”
