It is served by tworailroadlines,twohighways,aregionalairport,apublicbusline,andisthecenterofabroadagriculturalandoutdoorrecreaYonarea.Marysville is home to the Yuba-Su^er Gold Sox, a community based,professionallyrunsummercollegiatebaseballteam,andisthehostforthe Horizon Air Summer Series, a season long compeYYon among aselectnumberofsummercollegiateteams.Marysville,alongwithYubaCity(it'sneighboracrosstheFeatherRiver)has long been one of the leading agribusiness centers of California.Other business comes from retail sales, manufacturing, rice farming,stock raising and mining. Beale Air Force Base (to the east) alsocontributes significantly to the community's economy. Outdoorenthusiasts enjoy hunYng, fishing, boaYng, swimming, golf, tennis andmany other sports in Marysville and the nearby countryside andmountains.Marysville’sGoldenHistoryIn the fall of 1842, John A. Su^er leased the land that would laterbecome the City of Marysville to Theodore Cordua. Cordua raisedlivestockonthelandandin1843builtahomeandtradingpostatwhatisnowthesouthernendofDStreet.In1844,CorduaobtainedanaddiYonalseven leaguesof landfromtheMexicanGovernment,adjacenttothatleasedfromSu^er.CharlesCovillaud,aformeremployeeofCordua,struckitrichinthegoldfieldsandreturnedtobuyonehalfof theCorduaRanch in1848. Theother half was purchased by Michael C. Nye and William Foster inJanuary of 1849. Nye and Foster, brothers-in-law to Covillaud’s newwifeMary,thensoldtheirinteresttoCovillaud.InOctoberofthatsameyear, Covillaud sold three-fourths of the ranch to Jose Ramirez, JohnSampsonandTheodoreSicard.During the Gold Rush, the ranch became a point of debarkaYon forriverboats from San Francisco and Sacramento filled with miners ontheirwaytothedigsites. Duetothisinflux,in1850,thefourpartners(Covillaud, Ramirez, Sampson, and Sicard) hired French surveyorAugustusLePlongeontocreateamasterplanforatown.

    Newly arrived a^orney, Stephen J. Fields, purchased65lotsanddrewupaproperdeedforthelandbeingsold. Alongwithlanddevelopmentcamegovernmentand the nameMarysville. The name was chosen indeferencetoCovillaud’snewwife,MaryMurphywhowasasurvivoroftheill-fatedDonnerParty.Shortlyajerward,Marysvillewas incorporatedbythenew California legislature and the first mayor waselectedin1851.By 1853,Marysville’s tent city had been replaced bybrick buildings, mills, iron works, machine shops andfactories.Schools,churchesandtwodailynewspapershadbrought‘civilizaYon’toMarysville.ThepopulaYonwasnearing10,000.Marysville prospered during the Gold Rush era,becoming one of the largest ciYes in California. In1857alone,over$10millioningoldwasshippedfromMarysville’sbankstotheU.S.MintinSanFrancisco.Sediment from hydraulic mining on the Yuba RiveraboveMarysville raised the riverbeds of the Featherand Yuba Rivers making Marysville vulnerable toflooding during winter storms and spring run-offcausingthecitytobuilda leveesystem. ThatsystemsYllprotectsMarysvilletoday.Unfortunately, the raising riverbeds also made theriversmoredifficulttonavigate. TheriverboatscouldnolongermakethetriptoMarysville.Withtheraisingriverbeds and the levee system construcYon,Marysville’sgrowthhasbeenlimited. ThepopulaYonhas not increased much since the days of the GoldRush.Asaresultoffireandredevelopment,manybuildingsfrom Marysville’s heyday have been lost over theyears. Thosethatsurviveareaconstant reminderofMarysville’sgoldenhistoryandproofthatMarysvilleissYllthe‘GatewaytotheGoldFields’.
