54 WHITE DWARF CITIES SHALL FALL

Last month, in the first part of the CitiesShall Fall campaign, we presented thebattle of the 13th Parallel, in which the

hordes of Chaos surged into the city ofCor Hydrae.

The Imperial forces high commander,Inquisitor Ilthaman, planned to draw theforces of Chaos into the heart of the city, where his armies could grind them to dustamidst the dense terrain, before theInquisitor himself would join the fray andtake on Warlord Ptar in single combat. IfIlthaman could entrap the Chaos horde inhis city, he could surround them, anddestroy them utterly. Or so he planned

Ilthamans GambitEven as the Shock Troopers of the Cadian74th A, B and E companies sold their livesdearly at the 13th Parallel, the remainderof the regiment redeployed further towardsthe centre of Cor Hydrae. The manoeuvrewas a trying one, for an orderly retreat inthe face of an enemy is amongst thehardest of military endeavours. But thesemen were Cadians, and death held no fearfor them. With the sounds of the Chaoshordes giving chase behind them, theCadians fell back to their preparedpositions at Martyrs Square.

Having manned the defences preparedfor them mere days before, the Cadiansprepared to hold the square until orderedto fall back once more. Few men of thelead companies expected anything otherthan to stand and die, just as the othercompanies had at the 13th Parallel. Theysaw this action as a fitting repayment tothose who had died that day.

Watching tensely across the widesquare for the first signs of Chaos forces, the Cadians were surprised to see a singleRhino crash through a ruined wall andhead towards their lines. As the transportslewed to a halt in front of the Cadianpositions, heavy shells began to fall, massive explosions wracking the squareand scarring it with ragged craters. TheRhinos ramp slammed down, and theCadians were astonished to see a SpaceMarine Chaplain disembark. The Cadiansgave voice to a mighty cheer as anotherfigure emerged. It was their commandingofficer, Colonel Kaze. He had somehowsurvived the action to draw the forces ofChaos across the 13th Parallel, and had ledthe lead elements of Ptars force directlyinto the killing ground of Martyrs Square.

Even as the Colonel was greeted by hisjubilant men, battle was joined

Welcome to the second part of our Warhammer 40,000campaign! Will Inquisitor Ilthamans plan to defeat Warlord

The high commander of the Imperialforces on Malins Reach, InquisitorIlthaman is a man noted for hisruthlessness, even amongst his peers inthe Ordo Malleus. He has faced WarlordPtar, the so-called Execrator of DolonisVII, on several occasions, and the twoharbour a grudge for one another that hasyet to be settled. Ilthaman is prepared togo to any extreme to defeat his nemesis, even to sacrifice an entire world to

entrap and destroy the Chaos warlord.Ilthaman intends to surround Ptar and hisforces in the heart of Cor Hyrdae, and toface the warlord in single combat. Onlythen, having slain Ptar by his own hand, will Ilthamans mission be complete.

Ilthaman will take to the field inMission 3 use an Inquisitor model fromthe Witch Hunters or Daemonhuntersranges, and follow the rules from theappropriate Codex.

    Inquisitor ilthaman

warlord ptarThe Execrator of Dolonis VII has carved abloody path across at least a dozen of theImperiums worlds, and has the blood ofmillions on his hands. Following thevictory at Dolonis, Ptars horde grew stilllarger, and he dared to imagine himselfworthy of the greatest of rewards a loyalservant of the Ruinous Powers mightreceive apotheosis to Daemonhood. Tothat end, Ptar has sealed a terrible pactwith his patron gods. He will offer up to

them the world of Malins Reach, and he,in return, shall become a Daemon Princeof Chaos!

Warlord Ptar will take to thebattlefield in Mission 2 the Battle ofMartyrs Square, and Mission 3 theBattle of the Pious Heart. If you wish tofield him, then you could use the newplastic Chaos Lord in Terminator Armourmodel and the rules from Codex: ChaosSpace Marines.

This campaign uses both theCities of Death andApocalypse expansions forWarhammer 40,000.

An expansion gives youall the rules and informationyou need to play games indifferent and exciting newways like fighting in a denseurban environment or usingtruly massive armies.

Scenario 2: The Battle of Martyrs SquareThe Battle of Martyrs Square was thesecond of Inquisitor Ilthamans bold actionsto draw the forces of Warlord Ptar into thecentre of Cor Hydrae. The Chaos forceswere forced to cross the wide-open spaceof the square before getting to grips withtheir foes; the Cadiansfire taking afearsome toll upon them as they did so.The Shock Troopers knew that they had tohold the line and not give an inch, so thatthe enemy might be punished for everystep of the Imperiums city they gained.

Despite their fate, the Cadians knewthat they were fortunate indeed to have adetachment of Space Marines bolsteringtheir lines. The example of these stoicdefenders of Humanity was one theCadians would emulate even as the enemybore down upon them. Each man prayednot for survival, but that he might do hisduty to the Emperor and take with himenough of his foe to save Cor Hydrae, andMalins Reach itself.

ArmiesDefending the positions hastily erectedacross Martyrs Square is a mixed force ofImperial Guard and Space Marines. TheImperial Guard army should amount toaround 5000 points, and the SpaceMarines around 2000 points.

In addition, the Cadians are now inrange of their medium heavy artillery. Thisconsists of up to 500 points of Imperial

Guard artillery pieces such as Basilisks, orany of the Forge World models capable ofindirect fire.

The Chaos army should be of an equalsize (approximately 7500 points). Inaddition, the Chaos army has a further2000 points of units held in StrategicReserve, dispatched by Warlord Ptar toreplace the inevitable casualties his forcewill take crossing the open ground ofMartyrs Square in the very teeth of theCadian gun positions.

The BattlefieldThis battle is fought on two tables. Onerepresents Martyrs Square, while the otherrepresents Saint Jerrons Hill, on which theCadians have emplaced their artillery insupport of their units in the square.

Martyrs Square should be set up on a6' x 8' gaming area. The photo aboveprovides an example of how to set up thebattlefield, though you will need to adaptthis according to your own terraincollection. Most importantly, the City Ruinsare only placed around the table edges, leaving most of the table open.

Saint Jerrons Hill is located only a mileor so from Martyrs Square, and the summitof the hill is represented by a 4' x 4' table, which you should set up near to your maintable. This battlefield should use any urbanterrain you have available, and may be setup by the Imperial side.

Brother Lysil of the BloodAngels Chapter gazed outacross Martyrs Square.

He knew the enemywould soon come into sight. He could almost smell theirevil upon the hot, cordite-laced winds.

Sir? Lysil turned toface the man who addressedhim. It was a trooper of theMalins Reach PlanetaryDefence Force. Speak,

trooper, Lyslil replied.Sir. If we survive this,my lord, what will becomeof us?

Lysil considered themans question for amoment. Across the squarerose the crump of explosionsand the grinding sound oftracks crushing rubble.

What matter if wesurvive this? the BloodAngel answered, hefting hisbolter and checking thesights in readiness for theinevitable assault.

What matter? thetrooper replied, confusionwrit large across his face.

Yes, trooper, Lysilreplied. So long as we do

our duty to Emperor andPrimarch, our deaths shall bea glorious thing.

The trooper nodded, andlifted his own weapon to hisshoulder. Space Marine andDefence Force trooper stoodside by side as the forces ofChaos advanced into theopen. As battle was joined, the bark of Lysils bolterand the sharp crack of theImperial Guardman's lasgunmerged into one.

Colonel! Kaze turnedat the shout. Duck!

He did so withoutthinking, trusting theinstincts of the trooperwho had called his name.As he slammed to therubble-strewn ground, hefelt something impossiblyhot pass overhead, the hairson the back of his neckbeginning to melt in itsbackwash.

    Forcing himself to

open his eyes, Kaze rolledback over. Whatever hadpassed overhead was gone, but it had left a boilingcontrail through the air, leading all the way back tothe centre of theImperiums lines.

And there, on the stepsof the Chapel of the PiousHeart, Kaze saw Ilthamanlocked in combat with abeast from a terriblenightmare. Rearing abovethe Inquisitor was a wingedgiant, its face leering anddemonic, its claws weremighty blades from whichroiling energies spat.

Kaze could see that theInquisitor had but minutes

to live.To me! he bellowedabove the roar of battle.Cadians! To me!

In moments, a score ofmen surrounded him. Hespared an instant to lookeach in the eye, beforepointing towards the chapeland the titanic battle beingplayed out on its steps.Twenty pairs of eyesfollowed his gesture.

The colonel and hismen stood, allunderstanding what must bedone. Kaze knew that nohollow speech was required. These men would followhim into the very Eye ofTerror, for they were

Cadians, beyond reproach, loyal to the last, with firein their hearts.

Charge! bellowedKaze. The colonel and hishastily formed detachmentbroke from cover, running oblivious to the bolterand las-fire around them towards the Inquisitor andthe vile monstrosity. Nonemade it to the chapel, butKaze had never been moreproud of his men.

Following the Battle of Martyrs Square,Ilthamans forces were successful indrawing Ptars hordes into the centre of thecity, at terrible cost to both sides. TheInquisitor Lord himself took to thebattlefield, determined that he would facethe vile Chaos warlord in combat, anddefeat him once and for all.

Every last warrior in the city gathered todo battle at the Chapel of the Pious Heart.Ilthaman deployed the bulk of his forces

around the chapel, while keeping theremainder back to encircle his enemysarmy. Here, in the very centre of CorHydrae, the decades-old battle betweenthe Inquisitor and his nemesis would besettled, one way or another.

ArmiesBoth armies are of the same size use asmany models as you can get your handson! In addition, the Imperium has a singlesquad of Grey Knight Terminators, up tothe points value of any such models youhave available.

The BattlefieldYou will need a 6' x 8' gaming area. Thephoto below provides an example of howto set it up, though you will need to adaptthis according to your own terraincollection. If you have appropriate terrainto represent the Chapel of the Pious Heart(such as any Sanctum Imperialis or Chapelof Sanctuary pieces), these should beconcentrated in the centre of the table. Asuitable terrain piece, or some manner of

counter, should be used to indicate thealtar of the Chapel of the Pious Heart.

Time LimitAgree on a time limit appropriate to yourgroup. You should be able to play thisgame over the course of a single day, butbe prepared to run into the evening.

Cityfighting StrategemsImperium: Obstacles, Booby Traps, SacredGround (the Chapel).Chaos: Deep Strike, Infiltrate, Sewer Rats.

Apocalypse Strategic AssetsImperium: Flank March, Null FieldGenerator (the altar)Chaos: Supreme Headquarters, VortexGrenade (Ptar).

DeploymentThe Imperium must set up first, in the areaindicated above. They have 30 minutes inwhich to do so.

The Chaos Space Marines also have 30minutes to set up, in the areas indicated onthe map.

ObjectivesPtar is attempting to seal his pact with theRuinous Powers by enacting a ritual ofdesecration at the altar of the Pious Heart. To do so, he must move into base contactwith the altar, and will then achieveapotheosis as described in the specialrules, right. If Ptar has achieved apotheosisand is alive at the end of the game, Chaoswins the game, and the campaign. If Ptarhas not achieved apotheosis or has beenkilled, then the Imperium wins the game.

Who Goes First?Roll a D6 to determine which side gets thefirst turn the winner decides.

Special RulesApotheosis! If Ptar comes in base contactwith the altar in the Chapel of the PiousHeart, then at the beginning of thefollowing turn, the model is replaced by aDaemon Prince.Grey Knight Intervention: The ImperiumsGrey Knights are held in Strategic Reserve, and will deep strike onto the table at thebeginning of the next Imperial turn afterPtars apotheosis is achieved. They willdeep strike to any point within 12" of him,and will not scatter.

The End?So, did Ptar succeed in his blasphemousritual and become a Daemon Prince ofChaos? Or did Inquisitor Ilthamanfinally kill his enemy, thus ending hislifetimes obsession? Either way, wehope that youve enjoyed this simplecampaign, and feel inspired to createone for yourself. The obvious place tostart is to continue the story. If hesurvived, what foul deeds will the newDaemon Prince perform in his service ofthe Ruinous Powers?
