FINAL FOUR BID FOR SPOT IN FIRST WASHINGTON FINAL

Stefanos Tsitsipas is back into the Washington semi-final for the second consecutive year, having

lost to Alexander Zverev at this stage last year. This time, he will face No. 52 Nick Kyrgios, who has

powered his way through four rounds behind a menacing service game that includes 73 aces. Kyrgios'

road to the semi-final includes wins over qualifier Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, No. 11 Gilles Simon,

Yoshihito Nishioka and lucky loser Norbert Gombos. Kyrgios is 3-1 against Top 10 opponents this

year, and this is his first contest against the 20-year-old Greek. No. 1 seed Tsitsipas is contesting his

seventh semi-final of 2019, his second at an ATP 500-level event.

Lucky loser Peter Gojowczyk is into his sixth career ATP Tour semi-final. At a ranking of No. 122, the

German is the lowest-ranked Citi Open semi-finalist since No. 128 Donald Young in 2011. Should he

reach the final, he will become the lowest-ranked Citi Open finalist since No. 416 John Isner in 2007.

But to get to the next stage, he will have to get through his toughest test this tournament as he faces

No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev. Gojowczyk has had an impressive performance this week, defeating

three seeded players in No. 12 Alex de Minaur, No. 8 Milos Raonic, and No. 13 Kyle Edmund.

Friday evening's semi-final meeting will be the first Tour-Level meeting between Gojowczyk and

Medvedev. They met at a Challenger event in 2015 in Shanghai, which Medvedev won in three tight

sets. The World No. 10 has only been broken once this week, putting him into his seventh semi-final of

2019.

STATS OF THE DAY

o Nick Kyrgios leads the remaining semi-finalists in aces with 73. Gojowczyk has 43, Medvedev has 37, and

Tsitsipas has 12.

o Daniil Medvedev has faced only 4 break points this week in three matches; he saved three of them.

o Peter Gojowczyk spent 2 hours on court in his semi-final against Kyle Edmund, the longest time of the

remaining semi-finalists.

o Nick Kyrgios played in the shortest semi-final on court at 58 minutes against Norbert Gombos.

LUCKY LOSERS JOIN TOP SEEDS IN QUARTER-FINAL PLAY

Top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas continues to roll through the Washington draw without having lost a set.

He will face his toughest test so far this week when he takes on No. 10 seed and World No. 30 Benoit

Paire, who owns a 1-0 record over the Greek. Their last and only meeting came on the hard courts of

2017 Metz, when Paire conceded only six games. But the Frenchman will face a completely different

player today, as Tsitsipas sits at the No. 6 ranking and has already claimed two titles this year at

Marseille and Estoril. The 20-year-old had a red-hot start to the season, having reached the semi-finals

at the Australian Open and the final in Dubai. His summer season began with an appearance in the

final at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid and a semi-final run to the ATP Masters 1000 Rome, which

propelled him to his career-high ranking at No. 6.

No. 6 seed Marin Cilic takes the second match on Stadium court against the talented No. 3 seed

Daniil Medvedev of Russia. The 6-foot-6 Croat's best result this year came when he reached the

quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid event. After starting the year at No. 7, he has fallen out

of the Top 10 and now sits at No. 17. Medvedev, on the other hand, began the year at No. 16 and

cracked the Top 10 on 15 July after a season that has included: a title in Sofia, runner-up finishes at

Brisbane and ATP 500-level Barcelona, and semi-finals appearances at ATP Masters 1000 Monte

Carlo as well as ATP 500-level events in Rotterdam and London.

Two lucky losers join the top seeds in quarter-final action, including No. 122 Peter Gojowczyk and No.

137 Norbert Gombos. Gojowczyk took big wins over Top 50 players Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur

and former champion and No. 8 seed Milos Raonic to earn a shot against No. 13 seed Kyle Edmund.

Edmund owns a 2-0 record over the German, both on hard courts. Gombos has also taken full

advantage of his opportunity in the Washington draw, taking out No. 66 Adrian Mannarino before

dispatching #NextGenATP star Miomir Kecmanovic. Today he faces big-serving No. 52 Nick

Kyrgios, who owns a 1-0 head-to-head advantage.

STATS OF THE DAY

o Norbert Gombos is bidding for his 10th career win. This week marks his first time winning a match at an

ATP 500 event.

o Nick Kyrgios has struck 54 aces in three matches this week.

o Stefanos Tsitsipas owns a 36-15 record in 2019, with a 19-7 record on hard courts.

o Benoit Paire is 6-37 against Top 10 opponents.

o Daniil Medvedev will be the first Top 10 player Marin Cilic has faced in 2019.

o Of the remaining quarter-finalists, Marin Cilic owns the most career titles with 18. The second most belongs

to Nick Kyrgios with 5 titles.

THURSDAY THIRD ROUND FEATURES NINE SEEDS, FOUR #NEXTGENATP STARS

As Thursday's third round action begins, four #NextGenATP players will take the court, beginning with

No. 9 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 18-year-old has compiled an impressive 2019 season thus

far, reaching career-high rankings 11 times after starting at No. 108 and peaking at No. 21 in June. He

has reached the quarter-finals or better at six events this year, including finals appearances at Rio de

Janeiro, Lyon and Stuttgart, and semi-final appearances at ATP Masters 1000 Miami and London. The

young Canadian will take Stadium court for a first-ever meeting with No. 6 seed Marin Cilic, a former

semi-finalist here in 2010 and 2015. The 2014 US Open champion narrowly escaped the second round

with a double-tiebreak win over Marius Copil. Other #NextGenATP stars in action include No. 1

Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 16 Frances Tiafoe, and Miomir Kecmanovic.

No. 5 seed and three-time Washington finalist John Isner takes the stage against No. 10 seed Benoit

Paire as the fourth match on John Harris Court. The No. 1 American recently won his 15th career title

at Newport, his fourth title there. Isner seems to do consistently well at select tournaments, as his 15

titles have come at six different events: Atlanta (5 titles, 3 runner-up), Newport (4), Auckland (2),

Winston-Salem (2), Houston (1 title, 1 runner-up) and Miami (1 title, 1 runner-up). And with three

Washington finals and two semi-finals under his belt, he is looking to do well again this year. Isner

leads Paire 1-0 in head-to-heads, with their last meeting dating back nine years.

STATS OF THE DAY

o Daniil Medvedev holds an undefeated 10-0 win streak against Americans since August 2018. His last loss

to an American opponent came against Steve Johnson at 2018 Eastbourne.

TOP SEED TSITSIPAS, FORMER CHAMP RAONIC OPEN WASHINGTON CAMPAIGNS

Top seed and World No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on American wild card Tommy Paul in

Wednesday's second-round action. This year, Tsitsipas is 2-2 in finals, and he has made it to the

quarter-finals or better in nine events, including a semi-final run to the Australian Open and

championship titles in Estoril and Marseille. World No. 128 Paul faces quite the challenge of getting

past the 20-year-old Greek, but Paul has had some success of his own here in Washington. In 2017,

he reached the quarter-finals with wins over Casper Ruud, Lucas Pouille and Gilles Muller before

falling to Kei Nishikori. Other seeds in action include No. 4 Kevin Anderson, No. 5 John Isner, No. 9

Felix Auger-Aliassime, No. 11 Gilles Simon and No. 12 Alex de Minaur, among others.

Former Washington singles champion and No. 8 seed Milos Raonic begins his campaign to reclaim

his 2014 crown here in Washington. His attempt in 2017 was cut short with a loss to Jack Sock in the

quarter-finals. Today he faces qualifier Tim Smyczek, the World No. 281 who won his first Tour-Level

match of 2019 with his 1R win over Matthew Ebden. Raonic owns a 2-0 lead over the American.

Anderson also kicks off play in Washington against Adrian Mannarino, against whom he owns a 5-1

Tour-Level record. The 6-foot-8 South African finished as runner-up in Washington in 2017, falling to

Alexander Zverev in the final. He is playing in his sixth tournament this year, having won a title in Pune

and reached the quarter-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 Miami.

STATS OF THE DAY

o Thirteen out of John Isner's 15 career titles have come on American soil. Ten of those are on hard courts.

He also leads the draw in Washington victories, with a 25-10 record. He has not yet won a title here, finishing

runner-up in 2007, 2013 and 2015.

o Jordan Thompson is having a breakthrough season, having won 22 Tour-Level matches so far, compared

to having won only one in 2018 (1-11). He has reached the quarter-finals or better in 5 events this year.

o For the first time since December 2003, three American men age 21 and under rank in the ATP Top 50.

They are 21-year-olds Reilly Opelka (No. 43), Frances Tiafoe (No. 40), and Taylor Fritz (No. 28). In 2003,

it was Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish and Robby Ginepri.

o Marcelo Melo won career doubles win No. 500 on Monday, as he and Lukasz Kubot defeated Rajeev Ram

and Joe Salisbury.

o Four #NextGenATP stars take action Wednesday, including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime,

Alex de Minaur and Miomir Kecmanovic.

KHACHANOV, MEDVEDEV LEAD SECOND-ROUND ACTION ON TUESDAY

Two rising Russians take the stage Tuesday as World No. 8 Karen Khachanov and World No. 10

Daniil Medvedev kick off second-round action. Khachanov, the No. 2 seed who earned a career-high

ranking on July 15, faces former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. While the 34-year-old Frenchman

owns a 2-0 record against the 23-year-old, both victories came two years ago, before Khachanov had

even cracked the top 30. The No. 3 seed Medvedev takes on American wild card Bjorn Fratangelo in

their first career meeting. With a successful season that included his fourth career hard-court title

(Sofia), Medvedev roared into the Top 10 on 15 July, notching victories over No. 1 Novak Djokovic and

No. 7 Kei Nishikori along the way.

Six American men take the court on Tuesday, led by No. 16 seed Frances Tiafoe. The 21-year-old

#NextGenATP star is into the second round here for the second consecutive year. Since his third-

round loss in the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid, Tiafoe has posted a 1-6 record this summer. He will face

Alexander Bublik, who has had a breakthrough year after reaching his first career final in Newport.

Other Americans in action include Reilly Opelka, wild cards Fratangelo, Jack Sock and Christopher

Eubanks, as well as qualifier Thai-Son Kwiatkowski.

STATS OF THE DAY

o Kyle Edmund is going for career win No. 100 on Tuesday. His season has included a semi-final run in

Eastbourne and a second-round appearance at Wimbledon.

o Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has reached the quarter-finals or better at five events this year, including a title in

Montpellier.

o Reilly Opelka reached the semi-finals in Atlanta last week, where he fought off John Isner in three tiebreak

sets and played a total of seven tiebreak sets in four matches.

o Alexander Bublik fought through four three-set matches in Newport before bowing out to John Isner in

straight sets in the final.

o Thai-Son Kwiatkowski is playing in his third career ATP Tour-Level event. His previous events were 2017

Newport and 2018 Washington, where he lost in the first round at both.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN WASHINGTON

1) Citi Life: The U.S. hardcourt series moves to Washington, D.C. for the ATP 500-level Citi Open.

Three of the newest members of the ATP Rankings Top 10, 20-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and 23-year-old Russians Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev, are the top three seeds. They are joined by, among others, former champion Milos Raonic and 2018 finalist Alex de Minaur.

2) Greece Lightning: No. 1 seed Tsitsipas was ranked No. 32 coming into the Citi Open last year, where the Greek started a superb hardcourt run. The Greek raced to the semi-finals in D.C. before falling to eventual champion Alexander Zverev, then followed up by beating four Top 10 players the next week at ATP Masters 1000 Canada. That two-week span propelled him into the Top 15.

3) Rising Russian: Khachanov made his Top 10 debut on 10 June after reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros. He became the first Russian in the Top 10 since Mikhail Youzhny in 2011. Khachanov seeks his first Citi Open win; he lost to Denis Kudla in his 2018 opener.

4) Present Tens: Medvedev joined his compatriot Khachanov in the Top 10 after Wimbledon, marking the first time two Russians were ranked in the Top 10 simultaneously since Youzhny and Nikolay Davydenko in October of 2010. Medvedev reached the Citi Open quarter-finals in 2017.

5) Former Champ: No. 8 seed Raonic is the only prior Citi Open champion in the draw this year. The former World No. 3 from Canada defeated his countryman Vasek Pospisil in the 2014 final for what is, to date, his sole title at ATP 500-level or higher. He has an 8-2 win-loss record in D.C.

6) Felix Flying: Another Canadian in the field is No. 9 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, the only player aged 18 or under currently in the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings. The #NextGenATP star has reached his first three ATP Tour singles finals this season, rocketing from outside the Top 100 at the start of the year to a career-high of No. 21 on 10 June. He turns 19 years old on 8 August.

7) One More Step: American No. 1 John Isner is two weeks removed from winning his first title of the year at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport. Isner had a career breakthrough at Washington in 2007, where he got five straight wins in final-set tiebreaks to reach his first-ever singles final as a 416th-ranked wild card. He also reached the final in 2013 and 2015, but still seeks his first D.C. trophy.

8) Hardcourt Hits: No. 4 seed Kevin Anderson had his own breakthrough at the 2017 Citi Open, making the final after a series of injuries had hindered him over the prior year. From there, the South African spurred himself on to a sublime 2017 hardcourt season, culminating in a first Grand Slam final at the 2017 US Open. He reached his second Grand Slam final last year at Wimbledon.

9) Hometown Heroes: No. 16 seed Frances Tiafoe, from Hyattsville, Md., and Denis Kudla, of Arlington, Va., are back at the Citi Open. Kudla was 0-4 in main-draw matches at the event before racing to the quarter-finals last year. Tiafoe got his first D.C. wins in 2018 to make the third round.

10) Double Up: Andy Murray will pair with his brother Jamie as part of a stellar doubles field in D.C. Four-time Citi Open champions Bob and Mike Bryan and Roland Garros champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies are in the mix, while Wimbledon champions and World No. 1s Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah face Nick Kyrgios and Tsitsipas in a blockbuster first round.
