Cayman International School is focusing its global service efforts to assist children from our Caribbean neighbor in Haiti. Working with the Children of Haiti Project (COHP),
fundraising efforts and other connections will be focused on providing aid to those in need. COHP was founded in response to the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake which leveled Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. On February 11, 2010, a broad coalition of leading agencies serving international schools and school super-intendents met in Boston and established an executive committee to design and imple-ment an educational center for the children of Haiti. After considering many suggestions, the committee decided to focus its efforts on serving the poorest children in Haiti, many of whom (50%) were receiving no schooling even before the earthquake. The broad goal of COHP is to marshal the resources and agency assistance necessary to conduct a compre-hensive educational program for children in poverty, with guarantees of long term sustain-ability and program effectiveness, and support for nutritional and medical needs. COHP's mission is to provide learning opportunities to children in Haiti with limited or no access to formal education, through the collective support and leadership of international schools, international institutions, and individuals worldwide. We are working together to nurture each child's intellectual, ethical, social and physical growth, that each may become a posi-tive, contributing member of the Haitian community. CIS is proud to partner in this mis-sion. For more information check out these links: http://www.childrenofhaitiproject.org/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-Gp98xt5_w

YEARBOOK PHOTOS CONTINUE NEXT WEEK Year book photos have been going smoothly and for the most part the weather has been cooperative! We have 2 more mornings of yearbook and class photos coming up this week. If your child’s photo day is on a day they normally wear a PE uniform, please send your child dressed in their regular school uniform with a blue polo shirt and pack their PE uniform and PE shoes for them to change into after their photo has been taken.
On your child’s picture day, please remember the following:
EC and ES students: BLUE polo shirts; no white shirts please!
Best uniforms We would also like to thank the parent volunteers who have assisted in getting the stu-dents ready for their pictures. Your help has been greatly appreciated! School Division photos will be taken next week. Please send your children in their best uniforms. Blue polo shirts for Elementary students, no PE uniforms. MS (Grade 6, 7, 8): Monday, October 6 at 8:00am; HS (Grades 9,10, 11, 12): Wednesday, October 8 at 8:00am; Early Childhood (Nursery, PreK3, PreK4): Wednesday 8:30am; Elementary (Kindergarten, Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5): Wednesday at 9:30am
Dear Parents,
Next week students in grades 3-8 will take the Measurement of Academic Progress
(MAP), assessment for reading. MAP is not a timed test so students can take as long as they
need.; a typical student will need 50 minutes. This computer generated assessment is individualized so no
two students will have the same questions. The MAP as-sessment is designed to measure academic growth over time
and your parent report will include all of the previous assess-ments. Additionally, students reviewed the MAP assessment this
week during technology class and experienced a short sample test. The night before the assessment please make sure your child has
plenty of rest.
Please note the schedule has been re-vised from last week. Ms. Amy and Mr. Jason’s times have
changed.

Pokemon Cards
Please note that starting on Mon-
day, October 6th, Pokemon cards
and collections will need to re-
main at home. Elementary Facul-
ty have discussed the current situ-
ation and decided that, at this
time, the cons of allowing trading
at recess outweigh the benefits.
Some of the main points for mak-
ing the decision include the fol-
lowing:
It can be an exclusive rather
than inclusive activity.
Trading has sometimes be-
come unfair and has led to
conflicts.
Although cards are left in
bags or cubbies after play-
ground/recess times,
Pokemon discussions have
sometimes continued in the
classroom which becomes a
distraction.
CIS policy states that personal
toys need to be left at home.
Classroom teachers have dis-
cussed this decision with their stu-
dents. We do recognize that
many enjoy this hobby, so we
are looking at alternative and
creative ways to provide oppor-
tunities for students to trade out-
side the regular school day. We
welcome your input and appreci-
ate your support and understand-
ing in this matter.

PROJECT GROW
On Thursday, October 2nd, third grade students began the 2014-2015
Project Grow at CIS. Project Grow is a school garden project help-
ing students and teachers learn the principles of gardening through
the development of sustainable school gardens.
This program will provide an
out of the box approach to nu-
tritional learning while promot-
ing sustainable agriculture as a
vehicle to teach children about
healthy food and where it
comes from.
The mission of Cayman Project
Grow is to be able to give all
schools in the Cayman Islands
support for edible gardens. The
importance of preserving the
health of the youth of the Cayman Islands is
critical and this project aims to help shift a
mindset to a healthier overall lifestyle.
Third grade students want to thank Cayman
Project Grow’s sponsors, Generali Worldwide,
and Mr. Tom Balon from Vigoro Nursery for
volunteering to visit CIS to teach about the im-
portance of gardening and growing healthy
and nutritious food.
The Lions Club of Grand Cayman
Sight Screening 2014
The Lions Club of Grand Cayman
and local optometrists, provide an
Annual Sight Screening program within schools on Grand Cayman and
Cayman Brac . This project has proven valuable in detection and pre-
vention of visual impairment in the early years of students. The screen-
ing will be done with all Grade 1 students and all Grade 7 students at CIS
on Thursday October 9, 2014.

CUC PRIMARY BOYS FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The CIS team first played against Prospect Primary School last Saturday. The team didn’t have too much trouble and won 4-0 with Jonathan R. and Francisco M.
both scoring two goals.
The next game against Savan-nah Pri-mary School was more difficult, but CIS won in penalties 2-0. Francisco scored during regulation time. The game went to penalties and Francisco, playing goalie, saved two penalties but the game was decided with Andrew W.’s strike giving CIS the victory. CIS then played against Red Bay Primary School in the quarter-finals. CIS unfortunately lost 1-0. (Article submitted by Francisco

FIRST HOME MATCH EVER FOR MS GIRLS NETBALL TEAM!
The MS Girls Netball team had their first home match on Monday. The girls played an exceptional game against a well-experienced team (ACA) who even commented at how well we played and didn’t make it easy for them! After not scoring in the first three quarters, our aim in the final quarter was to get one goal scored by the end of the match. In the first minute they scored one amazing goal and then followed that with another two in quick succession! All of the team worked well once again and dominated on court in terms of spacing across the court and enthusi-asm. The final score was 18-3 but our girls definitely left with their heads held high! Thank you for all of your support in our first home match – it was great to have home team supporters, although it would be great for even more familiar faces cheering the MS girls Netball team on at the next match, Monday, October 6 in the ARC at 3:45pm.

High School Students/Parents
Saxon Investment is sponsoring the Saxon Investment Club for students between the ages of 14 and 19. The club
offers a platform for students to be exposed to the realities of the investment world. Participation in this club is a
fantastic opportunity for students to learn about investing and developing a better understanding of finance in
general. Students will receive hands on experience and gain invaluable insight and knowledge about fiscal respon-
sibility. Students will gain experience in the world of finance through the development and maintenance of a virtu-
al portfolio by picking Stocks and Funds in accordance with their re-
search into the current market. The first meeting is at St. Ignatius
Catholic School Hall at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, October 8. If interested,
please see Ms. Sylma in the front office for registration form. The
form must be signed by parents.
Middle School Student Leadership
held their first event, The Back to
School Dodge Ball Bash, last Fri-
day. Middle School students com-
peted in homeroom teams against
each other in a double elimination
tournament. A special teacher team was also assembled to compete against the
students. For some reason many students looked forward to throwing dodge balls
at some of their favorite teachers. All participants played well-fought games, but in
the end Mr. James' 8th grade homeroom was victorious. The winners celebrated
with a pizza party during lunch this past Wednesday. Middle School Leadership
would like to thank everyone who came out to play! Stay tuned for the next event!
