incorporates discussions on the value and challenges of international development work.
.
All money earned is sent directly to those who need it making for a very personal relation
between the givers and receivers. Some of the projects we have contributed to are:

The Kaliningrad Project from 2001-2007,and
Micro-Credit and Nutrition program for women in Ghana since 2004.
The micro credit project has been so successful that we now have two groups and have expanded the project
with nutrition, health and urban gardening. (see more pictures below).
MICRO CREDIT AND NUTRITION INITIATIVE For the past seven years, The CIS Charity Club has sponsored
The Talented Women’s Club, a micro credit project near the market town of Kasoa in southern Ghana. This
club is a registered NGO, and consists of petty traders who sell goods door to door, or services such as hair
dressing and tailoring from their shops. The Talented Women’s Club has enabled forty women to take small
steps out of poverty and improve the lives of their families. More recently, we have begun to focus on health,
nutrition and urban gardening. We collaborate with Metropoli tan University’s Global Nutrition and Healthinstitute. During our Charity Club meetings students will also gain insight into the limitations and successes of
micro-credit on a global level.

AT THE HAND IN HAND ORPHANAGE in central Ghana
we will volunteer as assistants in the care of the many
physically and mentally handicap children who reside at
the centre. Among them is Emmanuella, who was born
with no arms and legs. When this happens, some people
believe that the child was one that the spirits of the forest
do not want to give up, and keep part of it with them when
it is born. The parents then feel obliged to give the child
back to the spirits by leaving it on the ground under a large
tree. Luckily for Emmanuella, missionaries found her, and
she came to live at Hand to Hand. Today she is learning to
write by holding a pen in the mouth. Our aim is to inspire,
and be inspired by, the staff and orphans at this very special centre.
NOT FAR FROM THE ORPHANAGE IS A MONKEY SANCTUARY. The story goes that a hunter in Boabeng
came across some monkeys guarding a piece of calico. He consulted his spirit Daworoh and was told thatthese monkeys would bring him good fortune. The hunter took the calico to his village and the monkeys
followed him there, and since then the monkeys have lived in harmony with human beings. The people in
Boabeng and Fiema consider the monkeys to be sacred, and in the 1970s came together to pass a law
prohibiting causing harm to the monkeys. The village is visited by tourists and researchers alike and is an
excellent example of how environmental protection can go hand in hand with income generating activities for
a local population.
Along Ghana’s
coast are a series of
forts built duringthe colonial period,
and many of them
were used in the
Atlantic slave trade.
We will visit Cape
Coast Castle to learn
the local history and the impact of the trade on Ghana. The castle was held by
the Danes for a short period – another interesting and relevant aspect of this
site.
Ghana is a friendly safe country and we are sure that the group going to Ghana will have a rewarding
experience based on mutual sharing, learning and building a direct relation with the people in the projects weare supporting.

The Excellent Theatre Company
ETC is a fully functioning Theatre Company. It works throughout the year, producing plays, events, happenings, whatever the members (crew and cast) want to do under the guidance of the instructor. Apart from the actors and other performers who rehearse and do shows, a technical department will lookafter the lighting, sound and stage equipment, and provide services for events in the PAC. Perhaps
several projects run at the same time, or a rehearsal takes place while some techies rig up the lights for amusic show that evening. The ETC is run by Mr. Sarstedt and students in grades 9 – 12.The Company Meets Thursdays, 3:50 – 4:50, with rehearsals falling much more rapidly as performancesapproach.
This year, ETC’s major project is the Senior School Musical (The Pirates of Penzance) which premieresNovember 14, and after that a student driven project is on the cards.
CAS: Creativity (Performing/Designing) and Action (building sets, rigging). As the company functionsthroughout the year, it is up to the individual to define her or his involvement, which could be anythingfrom a week of helping before the play, to full participation over the whole year.
See Mr. Sarstedt ([email protected]) for more information.

For details, contact [email protected]
The Peer leadership group
As an active member of the Peer Leadership Group you could receive CAS hours as an instructor. You
could pick a topic that interest you, for example stress relieving techniques. Then you would be trained
in that technique and deliver a lesson for your peers in your advisory class. If you are into Yoga, this is a
great way to practice Yoga and teach others!
Do you think that you might like to help the counselors with some other Advisory topics, which could
include university and career counseling topics? CAS hours could be had by designing and delivers alesson for advisory classes!
Would you like to have a “chill out” room in the school during exam time? A “chill out” room is a place
where students can have a drink, maybe some light snacks, use stress squeezes, and listen to light
music, or just relax. Helping to design and implement a “chill out” room in the school could also lead to
CAS hours.
The counselors have many activities through the year. Do you like to plan events, organize people,
places and materials? If so, you might be able to get CAS hours for assisting the counselors organize and
plan events. For example, on November 18th
there will be over 20 university representatives visiting
CIS, this takes coordination, CAS hours could be up for grabs if you assist in planning visits such as these.

LAP – Learning Assistance
Let me introduce to you LAP – the Learning Assistance Program. LAP is a voluntary tutoring program that we have had at CIS since 2000. I am always looking for tutors for all subjects and
all age groups. The way it works is that you give me your preference for age group, subject area
and your time availability – then I match you with a student. I am looking for both tutors for our
Hellerup Campus (Primary School and Middle School) and for our City Campus.I am also very interested in hearing from native speakers in Danish, German, French and
Spanish. We have many students who could benefit from working with a native speaker, just an
hour or two per week.In general you can give as much time to the LAP program as you would like, or as little – one
hour per week is minimum.
It is a fun way to get involved in the school community. And if you have an interest in children,
you will make a great LAP volunteer and friend to a student who needs it. LAP is a CAS activityfor Service.
Please don’t be shy, I promise that you will have a great time in the LAP program at the same
time as making a valuable difference in a child’s life! E-mail me, and I will be happy to give you more detailed information about the program.

Cindie Juul-Larsen

email him at [email protected] for further advice
MUN attendance must be regular and ongoing. Research/writing is necessary for the weekly debates. You
have to maintain regular contact (physical, telephonic, and email - we have a website and can chat via
the Student Council site)) with each other and the Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee comprises of students from last year´s MUN/THIMUN. The Executive
Committee is initially responsible for (co)chairing, opening and closing debates, and for ensuring that
MUN notepaper, amendment sheets and other practicalities are in place prior to debates.
MUN ACTIVITIES FOR 2013-2014
EGMUN: Dates: 13-17 November 2013. Location: Espergærde Gymnasium. All THIMUN delegates are
expected to attend. All new MUNNERS are expected to attend EGMUN. Apart from being a very enjoyable
social occasion where you will meet lots of gymnasium students (as unsure as you!) from DK and abroad,
HEMUN and EGMUN reinforce all the multiple social, negotiating, debating, lobbying and writing skills
expected of effective MUN delegates. CIS pays transport and registration fees.
SEASONAL SILLY DEBATE: End of "official" MUN Club meetings. Please remember that ALL MUN
members are welcome to continue attending MUN debates/meetings after THIMUN selections have been
made. The Silly Debate is for ALL MUNNERS so please come – it is great fun! Refreshments will be
served.
THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations): Main topic : Africa's Development. Dates:
Saturday 26th January – Saturday 1st February 2014. Cost: approximately 6000 DKK. It is unusual that
all MUNNERS are selected as delegates, so do not be disappointed – the chances are you will be chosen
next year if you are a regular and participative member. It must be added that THIMUN aspirants must
be on top of their IB/MYP work before and during THIMUN. THIMUN may not be used as an excuse for
lagging behind in class. Please note that active MUNNERS will miss a maximum of 7 school days to attend
conferences. You may not miss more than 8 periods a semester on extra-curricular trips/conferences, etc.
For more information on selection for THIMUN, see the CIS MUN Code of Conduct (at end).

Volunteer at Ordrup public Library
We are looking for young volunteers to our new club called ”International Kids Club”.
The club will be for school children, so the age range is between 6-15 years. The idea behind is to bring international and
Danish children - living in Gentofte- together for mutual cultural exchange – many children in this area have lived abroad, so
their English skills are good and they know how it is to be a kid abroad.
The international children can benefit from getting to know local children and to do activities in their local community.
Since the age range is quite big we hope to get a volunteer group who will do activities for different age groups. The volunteer-
group will hopefully be a mix of CIS students, students from Ordrup gymnasium and other interested.
The volunteers group are developing the activities together with staff from the library and will be in charge of one monthly
activity in the” International Kids club”. The activities could be different sports, games, bookclubs, films or something totally
different depending on ideas from the volunteer group
This what we offer:
- An opportunity primarily for 11th.-12th graders
- A chance to be creative and make a difference for a group of children and the local
community
- We expect that the group are in charge of a monthly activity 2-3 hours
- The group will be using about 10 hours in planning the activities.
- There will be a information meeting later in September for new volunteers
Interested?

Welcome to the BRAP way of life
When: This years trip will take place between July 5th and July 24th. In comparison to previous years,
students will have the added benefit of travelling to Laos and Cambodia, with a short stay-over in
Bangkok.
Advantages
In dedication towards contributing to the internationalism of their Diploma, the DP Economics Club
proposes an educational and charitable excursion to Thailand, which will educate and further thestudents understanding of Development Economics and more specifically health care economics and
disaster response; as well as providing them with the opportunity to gain valuable first-hand experience.
This would be done by physically working with charitable organizations assisting Burmese refugees. This
organization provides health care, education and housing to those displaced peoples. The excursion is not
only for the benefit of those taking part, but also for the people the group will be assisting in Thailand. It
will provide the participating members the opportunity to exchange cultural knowledge, and will
contribute to the students’ development as individuals. Through this, the group aims to provide aid to
groups with which they will be working with and also further their knowledge of economics through first
hand experience.

Do you know what is trendy and happening before
everyone else does when it comes to books, movies,
games, gossip and all things teen?
Then use your awesome powers to make Gentofte
Hovedbibliotek an even better library!
At Gentofte Hovedbibliotek we have a semi-secretspace called “Fristelsernes Kammer” – The Room ofTemptation. In the past the room has been used to
introduce Paranormal Romance, challenging people
with moral dilemmas, and revealing secrets among
other things.
But now the walls are white and waiting to be painted,
wallpapered, poster’ed up, clothed or whatever else youmight want to do with them.
Empty shelves await your judgment. What is in?
What is out? What should young adults read, watch,
play or talk about?
The Room of Temptation will be your chance to promote what YOU think is hot!
We are looking for 1-3 teens to take responsibility for the presentation of this room – includingonline.
We expect attendance at the library at least once a week between the volunteers for 2-3 hours.
Once a month the room needs to be refurbished which including planning could take between 10-
15 hours. We will supply the necessary funds for decoration.
Friendly librarians will assist you in making your ideas become reality (if needed).

Gentofte Hovedbibliotek
reate promotional videos
Are you a director at heart?
Gentofte Bibliotekerne are looking for
students who would like to make short
informational videos for non-Danish
speakers about how to use the libraries.
To do this you will first need to
investigate and get to know the libraries
in Gentofte. Discover what the libraries
have to offer, what you can borrow, what
sort of activities that take place and so on.
Then you must plan how you would like to shoot your videos. They could be following a
manuscript, consist of interviews, be a music video… anything goes as long as it is your idea. If you need to edit, we will provide software for you.
Finally the videos will be uploaded to our website and our youtube channel , so only make videos
that you would be happy to share with the world. If you want to make ultra short videos for Vine
or Instagram, then you can do that too.
The only requirements that we have, is that you know how to hold down the record button on a
recording device. Your phone, for instance.
You must expect to spend at least 20-30 hours on investigating and planning your video and a
minimum of an additional 10 hours on shooting and editing. On the other hand you are free to
schedule the 20-40 hours of movie-making yourself within a 3 month limit.

Geekalicious Library lubs
Geek is chic, and there is no better place to be geek-
chic than at the libraries. Now we want you to put
your passion about your geeky subject to use and
share it with others. We want you to help us start up
and run the most geekalicious library clubs ever.
We would like to co-operate with volunteers in
creating clubs regarding video games, movies, books,
music, or something we are not geeky enough to
know about.
It could be in areas such as arranging LAN-parties,Fifa-tournaments, or courses in creating your own
basic computer games.
It could also be arranging movie nights, where you
and fellow students watch and discuss movies from
all over the world, or perhaps even try to make your
own movie in the library space?
How about compiling all the information you can
about your favorite band or musician, and share this
information with the world at the library while
playing their music?
Or maybe just good old fashioned book club. The
library can get hold of all kinds of wonderful books
for you.
Dystopian Science Fiction? Romantic Urban Fantasy? Terrifying Zombie reads? Authentic
Graphic Novels?
You think it, we will help you get it!
The possibilities are endless, and remember that your ideas are the best ones!
We estimate that defining and planning your Geekalicious Library Club should take about 10
hours per group with an additional 4-5 hours per month.

The Prom Committee
Prom committee is an excellent way to combine Creativity and Service. If you want to participate you
need
to commit yourself for 18 months. You start to work as an assistant in August when you are in DP1 and
learn how to organize big events. Learning happens when DP2 students organize the Snowball party for
Christmas. After the Snowball you are in charge and organize the Prom for the graduating DP2 students.
When you start your second year in Diploma Program you need to teach the necessary skills to the new
diploma students. So in all you are involved with organizing two Snowball events and one Prom.
The group needs 6 enthusiastic and active new members every year!

Team Peru
Team Peru hopes to provide long term support to Kiya Survivors. Our school community is constantlychanging, so the challenge of building awareness and support is on-going and will be a big focus for the
future. It is hoped that Team Peru will become embedded within the school curriculum and inspire
children in the lower grades to work towards doing something to better the world and maybe one day a
place in the Team
The Team visits Peru every two years and aims to empower as many students as possible. There are
now Team Peru members all over the world! Thanks to the reach of social media in connecting a
community like CIS, with its friends in the wider world, Team Peru is branching out. After four success
stories so far, the long-term goal is to see similar Teams starting in other schools around the world. With
the enthusiastic way that Team Peru has been embraced at CIS, this is a very real possibility, and would
mean a real and sustainable difference for the most vulnerable children in Peru.
2013/14 is a traveling year. There are a few places left for those who show initiative and can raise the
money needed for the trip. As well as this we are looking for new members who are interested in
helping us fundraise through organizing and running events throughout the year such as being part of
the birthday entertainers group plus the fun run on September 22nd. Meetings are every Tuesday in
E1. Hope to see you there!

CIS Animal Rights Group
The animal rights group aims to create a world where animals are given the compassion and respect that
they truly deserve. We propose that animals be viewed as individual beings with the right to live and befree, rather than property over which we can dominate. Our mission is to get the animal rights message
out to as many people as possible. This year we are going to spread awareness through leafleting,
presentations, information stands, campaigns, movie nights and more. We focus our attention on the four
areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on
factory farms, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a
variety of other issues as they become relevant.
You do not have to agree with all the ideas that the animals rights group stands for to be a member, as
they may at times be controversial. The only expectation for our members is to love and respect animals
and to be driven to stop the injustices that animals face every day.
We wholeheartedly hope that you will join the CIS Animal Rights Group and help us in our mission of
making the world a kinder place for all animals.

CIS Student Leadership Pilot Programme
Programme Objective
CIS Senior School is launching a 5-month Student Leadership Pilot Programme on Sunday 12th January 2014 at the
UN City. The aim is to provide students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills in a variety of contexts, both within the school and in the wider community.
Leadership is one of the most helpful competencies that can be used in many different aspects in your life. It helps you
take charge of your life and bring meaning to it. Leadership is also something that everyone can learn. That is why we
have established a program to provide students who have a desire to develop their leadership abilities with the insights
and tools to do so. If you are someone who would like to look back at life and say you have accomplished something,
this is the programme for you. Through this journey you will learn the traits and qualities that most great leaders have incommon and explore what you want to lead.
Students who decide and are dedicated to being a part of the leadership programme will select a project as a part of their
leadership learning’s e.g. a community activity, sports captain, performing arts leader or setting up a fundraising event.
The students will have an assigned mentor to help coach and guide them within this project and will have monthly
meetings with their mentor. To support the students, the Programme will integrate innovative leadership and coachingresources through an online resource and bi-weekly lunchtime meetings designed to amplify what the students alreadydo in their normal school programme of lessons and activities.
The Student Leadership Programme measurable outcomes are:
Increase student’s self -awareness, resilience and self-management;
Cultivate student’s self -motivation, courage and ability to listen and communicate well; and
Develop student’s ability to set goals, lead and work with others, and meet the goals.
In joining the Leadership Programme it is important that you understand the following requirements:
Commitment:
Even though this programme is voluntary, it requires your solid commitment to function smoothly and be effective. Your commitment includes attending meetings regularly and completing any assignments that are given out. Students
must also take part of the Kick off Retreat on 12th January 2014 and work with the online resources that will be set upas the programme develops.
Participation:
Students are expected to participate actively and positively in the Programme. This includes, for example, contributing
ideas and thoughts to the meetings, working dynamically with your assigned mentor and bringing your learning’s into thecommunity.
Attitude:
Students need to present themselves with an overall positive and open minded attitude. Working with interest and
ambition is key to being a part of this programme. The student needs to have a genuine drive and desire to learn aboutleadership.
At the end of the 5-month pilot programme you will present your learnings to the community at an event you will
collectively design and arrange. As this is a pilot programme we also request you to provide us with detailed feedback to
help in the development of the programme.
