Circuit Cellar Design Logic Contest 2002 Project Number: 274 OCU-ESC : Onboard Computer Unit - Electronic Speed Controller for R/C Car Abstract Radio controlled model is one of the most rewarding hobby for every ages, The most favorite R/C model is the Electric R/C car powered by small DC motor. The 1:10 scale touring car can easily have top speed over 40 mph. In the old day the mechanical switch or variable wire wound resister controlled by normal R/C servo are used for throttle control. The problem is that they usually have very limited resolution and high power loss by the heat produced by the resister. Now most cars are fitted with a solid- state speed controller (ESC) which control the car speed by Pulse Width Modulation. The power lost is very little and the throttle response is significantly improved. The OCU-ESC is an ESC with one important features added, 1 Channel ABS The ABS will sense the car speed by an optical sensor and will release the brake if it found that the wheel is stop. AbstractRadio controlled model is one of the most rewarding hobby for every ages, The

most favorite R/C model is the Electric R/C car powered by small DC motor. The 1:10scale touring car can easily have top speed over 40 mph. In the old day the mechanicalswitch or variable wire wound resister controlled by normal R/C servo are used forthrottle control. The problem is that they usually have very limited resolution and highpower loss by the heat produced by the resister. Now most cars are fitted with a solid-state speed controller (ESC) which control the car speed by Pulse Width Modulation. Thepower lost is very little and the throttle response is significantly improved.

The OCU-ESC is an ESC with one important features added, 1 Channel ABS TheABS will sense the car speed by an optical sensor and will release the brake if it foundthat the wheel is stop.

Main Features and Description:• Forward./Brake Electronic Speed Control

Forward speed and brake power are controlled by PWM signal drive to appropriatedMOSFET

• 1 Channel ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System)When the wheel are stopped while braking the ABS will release the brake to prevent

the wheel skidding during high-speed brake

• Fail-safeIf OCU-ESC doesn’t receive signal from R/C receiver in 50 ms it will stop the motor

• Motor-Lock ProtectionIf the motor is lock for some reason the OCU-ESC will stop supplying power to the

motor
