unique aspects of implementing PDM in a regulated, fast-

moving, global consumer goods market.

Track B: Organizational and Process ImprovementSalle Hemes

Re-Engineering the Product Development Process -Gisela Trinkwitz, Siemens, GermanyTo effect dramatic improvements in time to market, product costs and quality, many corporations are re-

engineering their internal processes. All significantoperations are usually effected by the change. The role ofPDM in supporting process re-engineering and the

operational impact of PDM related re-engineering within a

major corporation will be described.

Track C: Featuring CSM and Inbound Supply ChainSalle Clio

An Introduction to CSM and the In-bound SupplyChain - Alan Mendel, CIMdata, Inc.This presentation will focus on topics related to ComponentSupplier Management (CSM) and the in-bound supplychain. Some ofthe issues discussed will include generalbusiness issues and technologies that support component

supplier management technologies.

14:30-16:00 Track D: Discussion GroupsGallieni 3

Building an Integrated PDM/ERP Environment -

Jean-Pierre Marx, Thomson-CSF Detexis, FranceThe integration ofPDM and ERP systems is a critical issue

now being faced by many manufacturers. This presentationdescribes both the technical and organizational interactions.

The roles ofERP and PDM are explored, with ERP beingstrong in planning, scheduling, and finance, and PDM

being strong in information modeling, data exchange, information flow, and access control. The issues and

benefits of the relationship, interaction, and integrationbetween PDM and ERP are discussed. (Limited to 30

people only)

15:15-16:00 Track A: Technologies and their ApplicationsSalle Athena

Worldwide Collaborative Plant Engineering in theMetals and Mining Industry - Peter Loeffler, SiemensAG, GermanyThis presentation describes the concept and realization of aMATRTX-based EDM system to support worldwide plantengineering. The intranet-based system connects CAEtools, documents, product libraries, user- and customer

directories and ERP systems (e.g. SAP R/3) to a

comprehensive tool to run engineering business in adistributed company.

Track B: Organization and Process ImprovementSalle Hermes

Defining the Right Metrics - Roland Ries, Goodyear,Luxembourg"One cannot manage what one cannot measure" is a

historical management truism. Measuring benefits and the

impact on an organization is particularly important in PDM.Since PDM is a relatively new technology, managementmust understand their near and long term business

objectives, and the results actually being obtained againstthose objectives to assess ifmid-course corrections wouldbe appropriate. The experience of one company in definingand measuring the impact of PDM will be discussed.

Leveraging Strategic Purchasing for a CompetitiveAdvantage - Pete Diepersloot, Seagate Technology,USA

The consolidation ofpurchasing activities has been a keybusiness initiative for a number ofyears. With the ever-

increasing number of acquisitions, companies are findingthemselves in a position that they must consolidate

purchasing and other related activities fairly rapidly in orderfor them to take advantage oftheir new potential buyingpower. This presentation will focus on how one company

accomplished this task.

16:00-17:30 Break in the Exhibit Hall

17:30-18:15 Track A: Technologies and their ApplicationsSalle Athena

Integrated Product and Process Development-Hartmut Isselhorst, Behr GmbH, GermanyThe current boundary conditions for product developmentand the introduction of the series in the automobile industry- accelerated development, severe pressure on costs,

process globalization - requires a new methodology for

manufacturers and suppliers to industrialize new products. This presentation describes the product generation processof a system supplier, with whom all project-relatedinformation, from concept development through the designphase and continuing through the planning of the

production process, is integrated by aPDM system and a

number of attached tools for the creation, management, and

visualization of data.

Track B: Organization and Process ImprovementSalle Hermes

Achieving Business Benefit from PDM - Mark Lewis,ALSTOM Energy Ltd., Warwickshire

This presentation will examine the difficulties of achievingbusiness benefit from the application ofProduct Data

Management technologies. The author's company has been

involved in both a single and multicultural language and

site deployment ofPDM. The talk will contrast and

compare these projects and discuss a methodology to

develop and sustain the business commitment to such

complex projects and the subsequent realization ofbusiness

benefits. The realizations of the benefits from PDM are

often not easy to demonstrate to senior management and

can be perceived as a threat by middle management and

employees. It's not surprising that PDM is pronounced bythe visionaries as a "bright New World" only for such

projects to suffer from the difficulties ofresistance to

change and failing commitment. Those companies that have

gone through this PDM "pain barrier" have subsequentlygained new energies to continue the crusade. This talk will

provide examples of breaching the "PDM pain barrier" to

achieve real sustainable benefits.

An "Out of the Box" Configuration ManagementSolution - Deborah Gravelle, Lockheed MartinCorporation, USA

Implementation of PDM software has often been a

complex undertaking, which may require extensive

customization and integration to meet ConfigurationManagement requirements. This may impact the

acceptance and implementation of PDM. As a result,PDM vendors are developing software that meets

Configuration Management requirements with minimal

customization. An "out of the box" approach to PDM

implementation of Configuration Management is

described in this presentation. The benefits, implications, and limitations are also described.

Strategic Purchasing, Part Reuse, and eCommerce at

Ingersoll-Rand - Jim Bacchus - Ingersoll-Rand, USA

With 61 legacy systems and scattered part information,

part reuse was impossible and an enterprise view of

demand and historical spend nonexistent at Ingersoll-Rand, the $7 billion manufacturing powerhouse. To solve

the problem, Ingersoll deployed Aspect's CSM system to

1,200 users at over 30 sites. Today, Procurement has an

enterprise-wide view of spend, and is able to

communicate preferred part status to Design. Design is

able to meet reuse targets and easily look up technical,

business, and where-used information on 2.6 million

parts. Mr. Bacchus also addresses the importance of the

Web in the enterprise system, and the impact on

frictionless eCommerce as Ingersoll moves beyond mere

aggregation to communicate with suppliers in a common

language.

The Optimization of Standard Parts in the Product

Development Process

Today's manufacturing companies not only have to make

better products cheaper but they also must make more

complex products that have more functionality. To manage

this ever-increasing complexity, many companies have

implemented standard parts and/or component strategies. Many of these strategies allow for an increased mix of end

product configurations based on a standardized set of

parts/components. This presentation will focus on how one

company uses this standardization approach for competitive

advantage.

Saving Millions with CSM - Richard Unis, IBM, USA

IBM has one of the world's leading implementations of

Component and Supplier Management (CSM) systems

tightly integrated to their ERP, PDM and CAD systems in a

shared data environment that has enabled IBM to save over

$250 million in the past three years alone.

Prior to the Aspect implementation IBM had experienced

significant part proliferation in the past two decades, with

the number of active parts designed into IBM products

mushrooming to more than a halfmillion. There was

virtually no inter-division part or design reuse. Today,

design engineers are guided by IBM's comprehensiveIntegrated Product Development process to select preferred

components and designs from their Aspect CSM system. The result has been a dramatic reduction in the number of

active parts, and a commensurate impact to IBM's bottom

line.
