Message from CII

Measuringsocialimpactischallengingonmanylevelsbecauseitismulti-facetedandoftenlinkedtoveryentrenchedsocio-culturalnormsandbeliefs.Thesearenotalwaystangibleandvisible,andsometimesevenjustaone-offoccurrenceandnotnecessarilyindicativeofadeepandlastingchange.

Moreover,changesinsocialconstructstaketimeanddonotreadilychangewithinashortspanofsixmonthsorevenayear.However,shiftsinperceptionsandactionsrelatedtosocialconstructssuchasempowermentandgenderequitycantheoreticallycontributetosocialchangethatcanbesustainedovertime,andallowforfurthersocialdevelopmentofasociety.

Forthesocialdevelopmentecosystem–thefunders,theimplementorsandthedecisionmakers–measurementofsocialimpactiscriticalasitallowsustounderstandwherewemakeourinvestment.Hence,tyingsocialimpactmeasurementtostringentindicatorsisessentialtounderstandthescaleandeffectofthechange.

CII initiatives for social development Societyisanimportantstakeholderforathrivingbusinessecosystem.Societalprogressanddevelopmentarethereforeapre-requisitefortheindustrytobesuccessful.Theonusisthereforeontheindustrytostrivetobesustainable,inclusiveandgivingatthesametime.

CIIWesternRegion,throughitssociety-connectinitiatives,wasabletogetsignificantindustryparticipationandrepresentationinitsobjectiveofgivingbacktothesociety.

Workshop on sexual harassment at workplaceSexualharassmentisoneissuethathasprobablyplaguedeveryinstitution,bigorsmall.Unfortunately,itstillremainsoneofthemostunreportedoffencesofalltimes

Aone-dayworkshoponsexualharassmentatworkplacewasorganisedinGoa.Itcoveredtheimportantaspectsofpreventionofsexualharassment,itsprohibitionandredressal.ItalsoexplainedtheroleofanInternalCommittee(IC)memberattheworkplacetooverseetheimplementationoftheanti-sexualharassmentpolicy,deliberateandresolveanysexualharassmentattheworkplace,andrecommenddisciplinaryactionsifany,totheemployer.

TheworkshopaimedtohelptheICmembersconductformalinvestigation,helpthemwithinterviewingtips,legalrequirements,drawingconclusions,assessingcredibilityanddecidingoncorrectiveaction.Italsocoveredclosingprocedures,timelinestobefollowed,penaltiesforcontraventionofprovisionsandtipstowriteareport.

Investing in adolescence for demographic dividendsAconsultationsessiononinvestinginadolescencefordemographicdividendswasorganisedinSurat.Inputsweresoughtfromindividualsanddiscussionswereheldonthenecessaryinterventionsrequiredforadolescents.TheprogrammeaimedatguidinglocalNGOsandspreadingawarenessontheempowermentofadolescents.Thenecessityofspecialfocustowardsdisabledindividualswasalsostressedupon.

Sharing best CSR practices on employee volunteerism in CSR and employee engagementAsessiononsharingofbestCSRpracticesonemployeevolunteerisminCSRandemployeeengagementwasorganisedinPune.Ithelpedparticipantsgainaninsightintothewaysinwhichcompaniespracticeemployeevolunteerism,anditslinktoCSRstrategy.Practiceswhichsupportsucheffortswerehighlightedalongwithsuggestionswhichcouldbeoffered.

TheprogrammealsoaimedatidentifyingmajorCSRinitiativesundertakenbyorganisations,drivingforcesandalsoexploringnewavenuesinCSRpracticethroughcross-learning.

Industry-led social transformation through CSR and beyondThesession,‘Industry-ledsocialtransformationthroughCSRandbeyond’wasorganisedinKolhapurandNashiktobringforththebestpracticesfollowedbyorganisationsfordrivingchangeontheground,anddrawtheattentionofvariousstakeholderstowardsperspectivesandfacetsforcreatingsocialanddevelopmentalimpact.

Contribution towards Kerala flood reliefCIIMarathwadaZoneSMEmembersextendedtheirsupporttothefloodvictimsinKerala.Thestatehadwitnessedunprecedentedrainfall,whichresultedinthedisplacementofthousandsofpeople.ThereliefmaterialsenttoKeralaincludeditemsofdailyuseincludingsoaps,mats,mosquitocoils,matchboxesandsugar.

CII Model Career Centre (MCC) job fairsCIIMCC,Mumbai,alongwithUdyogMantralayaofMaharashtra,organisedsevenjobfairsinthestateacrossAurangabad,Mumbai,Nagpur,Kolhapur,Nashik,NaviMumbaiandPune.Theobjectiveofthejobfairwastoreachouttotheyouththroughworkshops,portals,jobfairsandguidethemontrainingrequirementsandjobopportunitiesaspertheiraptitude.Thejobfairsuccessfullyconnectedjob-seekerswithjob-providers.Theycollectivelysawparticipationfrom523companiesandover28,000jobseekers.Over11,000joboffersweregenerated.

Model Career Centre – Career Counselling and Rozgar Yatra – SindhudurgTheCII-ModelCareerCentre,Mumbai,launchedtheCareerCounsellingandRozgarYatrainitiativewithanaimtobenefityouthintheKonkanregionbyprovidingcareercounsellingandjobplacements.The‘yatra’wasflaggedoffbyCommerceMinisterSureshPrabhu.Twocounsellingvanstravelledacross13talukasintheSindhudurgdistrictinMaharashtrawherecounsellorsextendedguidancetotheyouthonjobsandentrepreneurshipopportunitiesineachtaluka.The‘yatra’lastedforaboutsixdays.Around3,547youth,including1,739girls,wereregisteredandcounselled.

Social transformation: Working on total water security in villages of Aurangabad districtCII’swaterinstituteprovidesintegratedsolutionstowaterresourcemanagementthroughtheuseofscientificanddigitaltoolssuchasCII’sWATSCANtool,whichlinkssatelliteinformationandon-grounddatabasesandprocessesinformation(spatialandtemporal)carriedinmillionsofpixelsonaGISplatformtofacilitatedecisions.ApplicationofWATSCANenableswater-smartdecisionsandintelligentwatersolutions.In2017,WATSCANwasappliedtoAurangabaddistrict,oneamongstthesixdistricts(Jalna,Amravati,Akola,SolapurandYavatmal)wheredistrictwatershedassessmenthasbeencompletedandreportssubmittedtothegovernmentofMaharashtra.TheoutcomeswerepresentedtodiversestakeholdersfrombothgovernmentandindustryatastakeholdermeetingthatprovideddirectionsfortakingforwardtheoutcomesinAurangabaddistrict.FourvillageswereselectedinPaithanTaluk,guidedbyWATSCANoutcomes,inclusionundergovernmentofMaharashtra’sJalayuktShivarAbhiyanandVillageSocialTransformationMission.

WiththeobjectiveofimplementingsuitablewatermanagementstrategiesatthevillagewatershedforthefourselectedvillagesinAurangabad,CIIhasbeenworkingextensivelytowardsthedevelopmentofauniquedigitalplatformforfacilitatingdecision-makingtoovercomeprevailingwaterchallenges.Inthecurrentphase,CIIhasbeenworkinginthevillages,

applyingWATSCANatthevillagelevel.Theinitiative,supportedbyStandardCharteredBank,involvesin-depthscientificassessmentforstrategisingwatersolutions.Itinvolves:• Identificationofappropriatewatermanagementstrategies,

postscientificanalysisatthevillagewatershedlevelthroughtheapplicationofWATSCAN

• Evidencebasedonon-groundimplementationofsuitablestrategiesatviablelocationssuchaswaterharvestingstructures,ie,CNBsCementNalaBandharas,gabionstructures,rechargeshafts,rainwaterharvestingsystems,etc.

• Real-timedatacapturethroughautomatedweatherstationsatvillagelevel,throughvillagepanchayats

• Stakeholderengagementandcommunitymobilisation,andenhancedawarenessonwatermanagementthroughvarioustraininganddemonstrationsessions

AuniquestratigraphicevaluationmodulehasalsobeenbuiltintheWATSCANtoolthatenablestheidentificationofpotentiallocationsforgroundwaterrechargeinterventions.TheoutcomesfromgeophysicalinvestigationsconductedforspecificmicrowatershedsassesssubsurfacelithologyoftheareafedintoWATSCANtoidentifyappropriatelocationsforundertakingwaterinterventions.

CII Chhindwara Skills Training Centre TheSkillsTrainingCentre(STC)inChhindwara,MadhyaPradesh,beingruninpartnershipwithindustry,aimstotrainlocalyouthtomakethememployableandcreateapooloftrainedworkmenfortheindustry.TheSTChas11companiesofferingtrainingin12trades.ThesecompaniesareToyota,GMR,Larsen&Toubro,JCB,Voltas,Cummins,ShapoorjiPallonjiGroup,Taj,Hero,MarutiSuzukiandRelianceFoundation.Thecoursedurationrangesfrom15daysto5months.TheSTCtrainedover1,000youthin2018-19andover6,000tilldate.Itplanstotrainatleast1,000youthinthecomingyear.

wassignedinJune2018.TwentymillionlitresperdayofcitysewagewillbeusedbytheIOCLGujaratRefinery,leadingtodirectsavingsintheuseoffreshwater.TheMoUwassignedinthepresenceoftheGujaratCMVijayRupaniduringhisvisittoVadodara.AsofMarch2019,theVMChasalignedthisprojectwiththestatepolicy,andfinalapprovalsareinprocessforlayingthepipelineinfrastructure.

Educational excellence forumLaunchedintheWesternRegionin2014,theEducationExcellenceForum(EEF)aimstopromoteindustry-academiacollaborationwithanobjectiveofaddressingtheemployabilitygapfacedbystudentsgraduatingfromvarioustechnicalandnon-technicalinstitutionsinIndia.

Throughitsvariousinterventionslikethefacultydevelopmentprogramme,studentdevelopmentprogramme,leadershipworkshopsforfacultyandprincipalsandindustryvisitsandinteractionswithseniormanagement,EEFhas,tilldate,benefittedover2,200studentsand500facultymembers.

Training in pottery making in association with the Matikala BoardTheMadhyaMatikalaBoard,establishedin2008underthecottageandvillageindustriesdepartment,trainspeopleinpottery-makingandalsodistributeselectricpotmakerstopotters.A15-daytrainingprogrammeonpotterywasorganisedattheCIISTCcampus,whichbenefitted37potters.

FollowingadiscussionwiththeofficialsoftheMatikalaBoard,theCIISTChassetatargettotrainaminimumof100individualsinthefinancialyear2019-20.

CIIFoundation(CIIF)wassetupbyCIIin2011toundertakeawiderangeofdevelopmentalandcharitableactivitiespanIndiabyenablingindustryforinfusinginclusivedevelopment.CIIFworkstowardsinclusivedevelopmentbyprovidingameaningfulbridgebetweenmarginalizedcommunitiesanddonors,especiallycorporatesbyprovidingstrategicguidanceonCSRanddevelopingandmanaginghighimpactprogrammes.ThethematicareasofCIIFinclude:Early

ChildhoodEducation,WomenEmpowerment;ClimateChangeResilience;DisasterReliefand

Rehabilitation.Inthiseffort,theFoundationworkstogetherwithcorporates,governments,communities,andcivilsocietyinstitutionstochannelizetheircollectiveresourcestowardssocialandcommunitydevelopment.

CIIF project in Maharashtra InMaharashtra,CIIFoundationinpartnershipwithCII-TriveniWaterInstitute(CII-TWI),initiatedwaterresourcemapping,planningandconservationprogramacrossvillagesinsixdistricts.In2017,CII’sWATSCANToolwasappliedinAurangabaddistrictforundertakingwaterresourceassessmentatthedistrict’swatershedlevel.TheWaterPlanning&AssessmentTool(WATSCAN)isanITdriven,GISandRemoteSensingbasedinformationsystemforcomprehensivewatershedevaluation.Thetoolscientificallyidentifiesareasofhigh&lowwatergeneration,accumulationandlosses,whichfurtherhelpsincreatingstrategiesforanimprovedwaterscenario.

Onthebasisoffindingsfromthewaterresourcemapping,CIIFandCII-TWIhaveundertakenanon-groundinterventiontomanagethesupply-demandmismatchandcreatewidespreadawarenessonwatermanagementinfourwaterscarcevillagesinAurangabaddistrict,Maharashtra.Thefourwaterscarcevillages-PaithanKheda,Shivnai,KeshapuriandPangrainPaithanTalukarealsocoveredunderJalayuktShivarAbhiyanandSocialTransformationMission.ThekeyinterventionsincludeinstallationofAutomaticWeatherStations,constructingcheckdams,cementnalabunds(CNB),gabiondamandtrenchwithrechargeshafts.Thecommunityisactivelyengagedthroughregularinteractionstoensuresustainabilityoftheimplementedstrategies.Interdepartmentalcoalitionhasalsobeeninstrumentalinidentifyingandbridgingthesupply-

demandgapsforoptimalgenerationandusageofwaterresources.

Toenablemeasurementofrealtimedataonrainfallandtemperature,twoAutomaticWeatherStations(AWS)havebeeninstalledatGroupGramPanchayatOfficesinPangraandPaithanKhedavillages.Thisdataisperiodicallybeingcollectedandwillbefurtherusedtoanalyseclimaticconditions,sensitizefarmersandbuildawarenessonimprovedcropmanagement.

CIIdirectedeffortstowardsencouragingcompaniestobeimpactoriented,withafocusoninitiativesaimedatmakinganintegralcontributiontodevelopment.PossibilitiesofcorporateengagementtowardsreplicatingandmainstreamingNaturalResourceManagement(NRM)modelsthroughCSRwasexplored.ARoundtablebroughttogetherthekeystakeholderstopromote,presentanddemonstratepilotmodels,drivenundertheGIZ-NABARDUmbrellaProgrammeforNatural-ResourceManagement(UPNRM).

WearegladtopresenttheCIISocialImpactReport2019,ajointpublicationofConfederationofIndianIndustry,West,andGrantThorntoninIndia.Thereportcapturesexcitingcasestudiesonhigh-impactsocialinitiativesbycompaniesintheWesternregionofthecountry.

Thesocialanddevelopmentsector,whichgotafurtherimpetusthroughtheintroductionofCorporateSocialResponsibility(CSR)intheCompaniesAct2013,hasbeenwitnessinghighmomentumandmotivationtoaddresssocial,economicandenvironmentalchallengesinthefarthestcornersofthecountry.Today,innovation,sustainability,replicabilityandupscalabilityhavebecometopicsofdebates,bringingvariousstakeholdersofthesectorincludingthecivilsocietyclosertotheboardroom.

TheCSRecosystem,comprisingbeginners,experiencedandmaturedplayers,isgoingthroughthelastfewmilesofbeingquestionedonspendingtheprescribedamountandisabouttoenteranewphaseofwhattheyhaveachieved.SeveralcorporateboardsandCSRcommitteeshavebeenquestioningtheirCSRteamsonsocialoutcomes,buttheprogresshasbeenslow.

2013wasaveryspecialyearforusatGrantThorntoninIndia.ItwastheyearwhenwecarvedoutadedicatedverticalfortheNot-for-Profit(NFP)sector;thiscoincidedwithCSRrulescomingintoeffect.AtGrantThornton,wealwaysaspiretobeadvisersofchoicewhoareselectiveabouttheirworkandclients.Atthesametime,wehavebeenagileinpickingupchallengingandunconventionaljobs,achievingsteadygrowthoverthelastfiveyears.TheNFPteam,whichstartedwithahandfulofpeople,hasgrownintermsofstrength,experienceandexpertise.Itcaterstoarangeofservicescoveringprojectmanagement,researchstudies,impactassessment/SROI,projectaudits,partnerduediligence,capacitybuilding,statutoryaudits,risk-basedinternalaudits,etc.Beingapartofoneoflargestaccountingandconsultancyfirms,theteamdrawsalotofitsexpertisefrombeingprocessexperts,focusingonboardlevelstrategyandgovernancerequirements.

Thedevelopmentsector,whichusedtobestableandconventional,hasbecomemorecomplex,bothintermsofchallengesandinnovativetechnology-basedsolutionstoaddressthese.CSRlawnotjustopenedthegatesforcorporateresponsibility,butalsogaveaboosttopersonalresponsibility.Contributionsthroughemployeevolunteering,individualdonationsandphilanthropyhavewitnessedmulti-foldgrowthoverthelastfourtofiveyears.Earliereducation,healthandlivelihoodusedtobetheonlysectorsofintervention,butnowfieldsofartandculture,sports,environment,slumdevelopment,etc.arealsoopeningupandgettingattention.

Newapproachesintheformofimpactinvestment,socialinvestment,ethicalinvestment,sustainableandresponsibleinvestment,triplebottomlineinvestment,socialenterprise

investment,crowdfunding,etc.arefurthergoingtochangethewaythedevelopmentsectoroperatesandachievesimpactandoutcomes.

Talkingofimpactandoutcomes,itisyetanotherexpectationthathasgrownmajorlypost2013.

Earlier,studiestomeasuresocialoutcomesandimpactandpushtowardssustainabilityandreplicabilitywerehardlylookedinto;thishaschangedcompletely.Today,corporatesareexpectedtoreporttheirprojectresultstotheirboardsandstakeholdersonaregularbasis.Infact,effectivereportingisalsocontributingtowardsbrandbuilding.

Amidstallthis,thereisaneedtohelpsocialsectororganisations,donorsandotherstakeholdersunderstandeachother’secosystemsandexpectations.Neutralgroundistobereachedthroughregularinvestmentincapacitybuilding,improvinggovernance,definingclearrolesandresponsibilities,creatingmoreopportunitiestocollaborateandavoidingduplicityofefforts.

Ibelievewehaveauniquetasktoperforminthesector:bethebridgebetweenstakeholders,takingintoaccounteveryone’sinteresttoachieveimpact.

TheideaofCSR,ie,businessesbearingtheresponsibilitytosocietyandabroadersetofstakeholders,isrootedintheperiodwhenbusinessactivityandindustriesstartedtheirjourneyofgrowth.Theterm‘CSR’wasfirstusedasanacademicconceptin1953byfamousAmericanscientistHowardR.Boweninhisbook‘SocialResponsibilitiesoftheBusinessman’,whileenquiringaboutthesocialresponsibilitiesthatbusinesspeopleneededtooblige,apartfromfinancialoutcomes.Between1960and1970,therewasatransitionfromformalisingadefinitionofCSRtogrowthofnewmodelsandunderstandingitsambit.Thebusinesscommunitywasconcernedaboutthesociety,buttheperspectivesof‘concern’and‘engagements’keptchangingcontinuously.The1980ssawtheriseofalternativethemes(likestakeholdertheoryandbusinessethics)ofCSR.The‘stakeholdertheory’wasdevelopedtoamoreholisticconcepttodescribeCSRasareciprocalrelationbetweenbusinessandstakeholders.

Thestakeholdertheoryevolvedintothe‘sustainabledevelopmenttheory’,whichisdefinedbyWorldCommissiononEnvironmentandDevelopment(WCED)as“developmentthatmeetstheneedsofthepresentwithoutcompromisingtheabilityoffuturegenerationstomeettheirownneeds.”Thetheoryarguesthatsustainableprofitabilitycanbeensuredthroughethicalandresponsiblebusinesspractices.Inthe1990s,CSRdevelopmentswerecharacterisedbyashiftasbusinessmovedfromcombatingtheeffectsofsocialproblemstofindingwaysofovercomingtheseproblems.Duringthe1999UNGlobalCompact,8,000companiesacross150countriessignedthedeclarationtoupholdhumanrightsofindividuals,labourstandardsandrefrainfromcorruptioninbusiness.TheGlobalReportingIndexintroducedin1997iscurrentlyanindustryleaderinprovidingasetofvoluntaryprinciplesforcompaniesintheareaofCSR.

Themeaningofbusinessunderwentchangesafterthe1990s,withemergingdiscussionssurroundingCSRasawayofensuringsustainabledevelopment.TheUNreport‘Developmentofguidelinesontheroleandsocialresponsibilityoftheprivatesector”in2002statedthat“socialresponsibility,likemanagement,isthebaseofhumandevelopmentandsocialactivity.”Itbecameclearerthatbusinessneedstoengageinsocialdevelopmentinareaswhichwereconsideredtobeundergovernmentpurview,likehealthcare,educationandoverallhumandevelopment.ThroughSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs),businessescanstrategicallyengageincorporate

socialresponsibilitybydeterminingwhichSDGsarerelevanttothecompany’scorebusinessandCSRstrategy.ByintegratingtheSDGsintothecoreofcorporatestrategies,companiescantrulycontributetomeetingsocietalneedwithoutdepletingtheplanet’sresources,promotingsustainableeconomicgrowth.

The21stcenturysawglobalorganisationsadoptbestpracticesinCSR.Forexample,OrganisationforEconomicCo-operationandDevelopment(OECD)releasedCSRguideline(OECD2001).TheOECDprojectonprivateinitiativesforcorporateresponsibilityindicatedthatCSRisaglobalphenomenon,withsignificantintra-regionalvariationsinpractice.

ThecompaniesinOECDcountriesengageinCSRvoluntarily,butlegislationinFranceandDenmarkensuresmandatoryreportingofCSRactivities.

DuetoinitialmentionofCSRinwesternliterature,itisbelievedthatCSRisawesterninventioninitsmodernform.However,thereisabundantevidencethatCSRindevelopingcountriesdrawsstronglyondeeplyembeddedindigenousculturaltraditionsofphilanthropyandbusinessethics.

CSRdrivesbusinessbehaviourtowardsamalgamatingsocialandethicalissuesforsocio-economicdevelopment.Overthepastfewyears,variousCSRframeworksandinitiativeshaveemergedindifferentcountriessuchasChina,India,Indonesia,BrazilandUAE.• Around2005,China’sfocuschangedfromeconomic

growthto‘societalbalanceandharmony’.PressureforanintensifiedfocusonCSRledtotheinclusionofCSRincorporatelawin2006,requiringcompaniesto“undertakesocialresponsibility”inthecourseofconductingbusiness.

• TheinstitutionalframeworkofCSRinBrazilreliesonnationalandinternationalCSRcommittedactors,primarilyfromtheprivatesector,mostinfluentiallybytheEthosInstituteofCompaniesandSocialResponsibility.

• In2007,thegovernmentofIndonesiapassedlegislationwhichmandatedcompaniesengagedintheenergyandextractiveindustriestodisclosetheirCSRactivities.

• InTaiwan,companieswithadirectimpactonconsumershaveamandatetospend2%oftheirprofitsinCSR.In2014,thegovernmentlaunchedtheTaiwanTopSalary100IndextopromoteCSRandexpandtheuseofprofit-sharingforthebenefitofemployees.

• TheUAECouncilofMinistersissuedanewresolutionon1February2018concerningtheCSRlawwhichimposesreportingrequirementsoncontributions(includingfinancialcontributions)madetoCSRactivitiestocommercialcompaniesofalllegalformsoperatingintheUAE.

In2013,theGovernmentofIndiaintroducedamandateforcompaniesoperatinginIndiatoharnessthesenseofsocialresponsibilityunderSection135oftheIndianCompaniesAct.CSRisnotanewconceptinIndia,butwhatwasinitiallygovernedbycorporateself-regulationfoundamoreprecisedefinitionunderthenewcompanylaw.

IdeaoftrusteeshippromotedbyMahatmaGandhi,wherecompanieswereseenasatrustheldintheinterestofcommunity.

TheActprescribesamandatoryspendof2%ofaveragenetprofitsonsocialresponsibilityforallcompaniesmeetingspecifiedrequirements.TheCSRlawcameasaresponsetotheneedforabalancebetweensustainablebusinessandsocialprogressinIndia.ThechangingenvironmentofpoliciestoenablesustainablepracticesincreasedparticipationinCSRandsociallyinclusivepractices.CSRhaschangedtheroleofdoingbusinessinthesociety,fromsimpleencouragementofmoresocialdutiesforbusinesstotheunderstandingofbeingsociallyresponsible.WiththeCSRlawmandate,companieshavestartedspendingandutilisingtheCSRopportunitytomakeameaningfulcontributiontothedevelopmentsector.

Inthelastfiveyears,companiesinIndiahaveshowngradualbutprogressivetrendstowardsCSRcompliance.ThedataofCSRspendin2017-18showsa65%increasesince2014-

15,withanincreasingnumberofcompaniesutilisingtheirearmarkedCSRbudget.ScheduleVIIofSection135ofCompaniesAct2013,initiallydefined11(amendedin2015)potentialareasthatcanbeconsideredbyacompanyforexpenditureinCSR.AseparateCSRarmwasconstitutedundertheMinistryofCorporateAffairs(MCA)tooverseetheengagementsofcorporatesinCSRactivitiesandtoensuretransparencythroughannualpublicdisclosuresonthestatusofCSRwithinthecountry.Thetrendsfromthelastfourfinancialyearshighlightthateducation,healthandruraldevelopmentreceivethehighestCSRfundingacrossregions.

Amongstthetopthree,findingsindicatethateducationisthehighestrecipientofCSRfund,inwhichschoolinfrastructureandqualityofeducationarepopularareasofexpenditure.

Educationremainsaprioritysinceaccesstoqualityeducationisconsideredtobefundamentalinimprovingqualityoflife,especiallyforthepoorandthevulnerableandhencecrucialforthegrowthofIndia.ThetopfiveCSRcontributorshaveanoutreachofover6.5lakhstudentsandyouth.

ThehealthcaresectorinIndiaisailingand2016’sdatafromWHOreportsthatIndiacarries20%oftheworld’sdiseaseburden,accountsfor17%ofdeathsduetocommunicablediseasesandrecordsthehighestnumberofmaternaldeathsintheworld.About24%ofthetotalspendonCSRisfocusedonhealthcareandmuchofthespendtendstobefocusedonsettinguphealthcampsandbuildinghospitals.Morethan6lakhpeoplehavebenefittedfromvarioushealthcareinitiativesofthetopfivecontributorsinthecountry.

Accordingtothe2011census,69%ofIndia’spopulationlivesinruralareas,amountingtoroughly833millionpeople.CSRprogrammesinruraldevelopmentfocusonservicedeliveryinthefieldsofwater,education,health,skilldevelopmentandinfrastructure.Environment,animalwelfare,conservationofresources,promotionofsportsandpreservationofnationalheritageandartareotherthematicareasthathaveseenslowbutprogressivetrendsunderCSR.

TheCSRspendsvaryacrossstates.Maharashtra,TamilNaduandKarnatakaarethetoprecipientsofCSRspends,althoughthesestatesarenotamongsttheleastdevelopedstates.Nagaland,Mizoram,Meghalaya,GoaandTripuraareamongsttheleastfundedstatesinIndia.Itisinterestingtonotethatthestateswithover55%ofaspirationaldistrictsontheotherhandreceiveonly15%oftotalCSRexpenditureinthecountry.StateslikeMaharashtraandGujarat,withhighestfunding,haveonly3%and2%aspirationdistrictsrespectively.ThiscouldpossiblybeduetothemandatethatnecessitatesimplementationofCSRprogrammearoundthebusinesslocation.

TheconcentrationofbusinessinthewesternregionofthecountrynecessarilyresultsinthehighestCSRspendingintheWesternregion.Theoil,gas,coalandpetroleumindustryisthetopcontributorofCSRfundstotheWesternregionfollowedbythebankingandfinancialservicesindustry(BFSI)andthechemicalindustry.

Asmentionedbefore,MCAmandatesminimum2%inCSRexpenditure,butsomeindustrieshavedisplayedaspiritofdoingmoreintermsoftheirCSRspends.Spendsbythemetals,mineralandminingsectorstandat138%againsttheirprescribed2%limit,followedbyenergyandpowerat127%andconstructionandservicesat115%.

CorporatesviewtheengagementinmandatoryCSRexpenditureasaninnovativewayofdeliveringsocialbenefitusingmarketmechanisms.InIndia,socialdevelopmentisanationalagendaforthegovernment.PoliciesandframeworkshavebeenalignedwiththeSDGs,focusingoninclusivegrowth.ConsideringthatCSRexpenditureismandatory,organisationsnowlookforwardtolong-terminvestmentandsustainedimpact,oftenaligningtheirCSRwithSDGs.CSRhasthepotentialtopaveIndia’sjourneytowardssustainableandinclusivedevelopmentprovidedthefundingisnotonlydirectedtowardsshort-termresultsbutsystematicandimpactfulsocialchanges.

Keepingupwiththe‘spiritofgiving’prevalentinIndia,corporatesengagedingivingevenbeforeregulationswereimposed.Severalorganisationshadstartedspendingapercentageoftheirprofitininitiativesonsocialupliftment,keepinginmindthevastsocialandeconomicdeprivation.

Inthelastfouryears,sincetheCSRlawwasenforced,asumofINR50,000crorehasbeenspentthroughCSRactivities.Thisamountisalmosttwo-thirdoftheBudget2019foreducationandalittlemorethanthatforhealthandfamilywelfare.Inthelastfiscal,35%oftotalCSRexpenditurewasincurredineducationandskilldevelopment,ofwhichINR1,828crorewasspentoneducationandtherestwasdirectedtowardsskilldevelopment.Over88%oftheentireexpenditureineducationwasutilisedforinfrastructuredevelopmentfollowedbyqualityofeducation.Improvingaccesstoqualityeducationforallhas

beentheprimaryfocusofover950companiescontributingtowardseducationandskilldevelopment.

Healthcarecomesnextasapriorityareaforexpenditurewith27%CSRfunds.Over74%oftheresourcesallocatedforhealthcarearespentonhealthcamps,followedby68%ininfrastructuredevelopmentandequipmentsupport.Asforthethematicexpenditure,educationandskilldevelopmentandhealthcareandsanitationremainedontop,althoughnationalheritageprotectionandpromotionofsportsemergedastwoareasthathavegrownbyleapsandboundssince2015.

CSRspendofenergycompanieswasthehighestamongallsectors,with51companiesaccountingfor23%ofthetotalCSRspend.Manufacturingwasthelargestsectorwith404companiescontributingINR1,868crore.

Currently,theCSRlawfocusesonwhatamountisspent,whatCSRactivitiesitisspentonanddetailsoflocations.ThefocusoncreatingasocialimpactthroughtheCSRactivitiesismissing.Duetothelackofemphasisonmeasurability,theconsolidatedimpactoftheincreasinglylargeallocationoffinancialresourcesremainsunaccountedandroleofCSRgoesunattributed.ThecurrentmonitoringofcompaniesintermsoftheirCSRrevolvesaroundtheabilitytoutilisetheCSRbudgetandreportingoftheactivitiesimplementedunderCSRwithbasicoutreachnumbers.Withshiftingfocusatthegloballevelonsustainability,thereareattemptsatquantificationofoutcomesandlinkingofSDGstoprogrammesundertaken.However,thereportinghasnotbeenveryprominentanduniform.Theemergingneedisforcompliance-drivenengagementinCSRtoundergochangetowardsplannedinterventionsforaddressingsocialissuestoachievemeasurableoutputsandlong-termoutcomesforsustainableimpact.Organisationsneedtoengageinlong-terminitiativesthatarespecifictowardsachievable,measurableandrealistic

Therehasbeenavoluntarygrowthamongcompaniestoevaluatetheimpactoftheprogrammes,tounderstandtheoutcomesofinterventions,buttheneedforaplannedassessmentisafar-cry.Therealisationofimpactoftheinitiative,themagnitudeandfactorsinfluencingtheoutcomesarebasedonsystematicstudyandanalysisofdatabasedonpredefinedmatricesbeforeandafterprogrammeintervention.

Itisimportanttounderstandthatimpactassessmentisnotaone-timeexercise,butsomethingthatneedstobeengrainedwithintheentireprocessofplanning,interventionandevaluationofCSRprogrammes.Thesocialimpactofprogrammesextendsbeyondbeneficiarynumberstomeasurethesocio-economicchangesbroughtaboutbythetargetinterventioninthelongrun.

Transforming lives of the fisherman community in Mundra

TheprojectaimstoempowerfishingcommunitieslivinginKutchregionneartheMundraport,whoaresusceptibletoclimatechangewhichcanaffecttheirlivelihoods,foodsecurityandhealth.Theregionfacesissuesofsalinityingressacrossandisinterspersedwithcreekincreasingdistancesbetweenhabitations,which,alongwithlackofinfrastructure,addstothelogisticalchallenges.Further,overexploitedfisheryresourcesanddegradedecosystemsposethreattofishingcommunities.

Inordertotransformthelivesofthefishingcommunities,theprojectfocusedonthefollowingsixinterventionareas:livelihood,womenempowerment,qualityeducation,skilltraining,healthandinfrastructuredevelopment.Thecommunitymemberswereprovidedwithbetterqualityequipmentaswellastraininginrelatedactivitieslikecageculture,polyculture,etc.,forenhancingtheirlivelihoods.Also,alternativelivelihoodopportunitieslikenurserydevelopmentwereencouraged,andaskilldevelopmentcentrewassetupwhichtrained246peopleintechnical/non-technicalcourses.Theprojectreachedoutto2,979womenprovidingtraininginfinancialliteracyalongwithengagingaround134womeninstitchinganddoriwork.AdaniVidyaMandir,aworld-classschool,wasestablishedtoprovidefree-of-costqualityeducationto1,780fishermenchildren.

Theprojectalsoprovidedaccesstodrinkingwaterfor4231fishermen.Therehasbeenadecreaseinchildmortalityowingtoincreasedavailabilityofhealthservices.Also,thecommunityhasaccesstotheGovernmentofIndia’sJanDhanYojana.

Swachhagraha-Swachhata ka Satyagraha

Theprojectaimstoresolvetheissueoframpantlitteringbehaviourandlackofasenseofownershipofpublicspacesthrougheducationandsensitisationforbehaviouralchange.

Understandingtheroleplayedbyattitudesandbehavioursincontributingtoissuesoflitteringandsanitation,theprojectfocusesonattitudinalchangeamongststudents,youthandcommunityatlargefor‘creatingacultureofcleanliness’.InspiredbytheSatyagrahamovement,theproject-‘Swacchagraha’aimstobringtogetherpeoplefromallwalksoflifeandcreateamassmovementforcleanliness.

TheprojectmainlyworkswithstudentandyouththroughSwachhagrahaDalscomprisingstudents(intheagegroupof9-14years)fromthegovernment,grant-in-aidandprivateschoolsundertheguidancefromSwachhagrahaPreraksorteachersfromtheirschools.TheSwachhagrahaDalsareagentsofchangeastheytakeownershipofcleanlinessissuesintheirschoolsforcreatingacultureofcleanliness,transformingthemselves,theirschoolsaswellastheirhomes.ThePreraksorteachersplayapivotalroleinfacilitatingbehaviouralchangeamongstudents.

SincethebeginningofSwachhagraha,theprojecthasgrownfrom6citiesinGujarattoover82citiesspanning19statesacrossthecountry.TherehasbeenanoticeablechangeinattitudesanddecreaseinlitteringhabitsofSwachhagrahistudents.Theinitiativehasreducedtheworkloadofthecleaningstaffatschools.Schoolchildrenhavedevelopedempathyandrespecttowardsthecleaningstaffasnotedintheinterviewsofthecleaningstaff.Childrenarethefutureandbyempoweringthem,theprojecthasbeenabletoreachthemasses,ensuringtheyunderstandthesignificanceofSwachhagraha.

Thisprojectaimstoaddresstheissueofaccesstoqualityeducation.Owingtolowqualityofeducationingovernmentschoolsandhighcostofeducationinprivateschools,qualityeducationisadistantdreamforchildrenfromeconomicallyweakersectionsofthesociety.TheproblemofhighcostofeducationissosevereinGujaratthatthegovernmentofGujaratin2017hadtoenactalawregulatingschoolfees.Theprojectaimstoprovidefreequalityeducationtochildrenfromeconomicallyweakerfamilies,whohavegreatpotential.

AdaniVidyaMandirisanEnglishmediumstate-of-the-artschoolthatprovidesfreequalityeducationandalearning-friendlyenvironmenttochildrenfromdisadvantagedbackgrounds.Thecosttowardstuition,books,uniforms,meals,transportationandextra-curricularactivitiesarebornebythefoundation.AdaniVidyaMandirhasvariousinitiativesthroughcollaborationswhichleveragetechnologysuchascodinginthecurriculum,languagelabsolutions,EduNextschoolsoftware,etc.

Interestingly,theprojecthastransformedthemindsetsofparentswhoarenoweagertobecomeliteratetosupporttheirchildren.Childrenwhowouldhaveotherwisedroppedoffarenowpursuinghighereducationandprogressingwellontheirpathofpersonalandprofessionalgrowth.

Creating water security in farms by Kedia Farm Pattern (KFP) underground rainwater harvesting

TheprojectaimstoprovideasolutionforwaterscarcityanddepletinggroundwaterlevelthroughtheinnovativerainwaterharvestingtechniqueofKFP.Theinterventionwasinitiatedtoenhancegroundwaterataspecificplaceandtimetosavesoil-erosionfromfieldsbyreducingrainwaterrunoffduringmonsoons.

ThefirststepinitsimplementationistoidentifyanareaforexecutingtheKFPstructureinthevillage.Afteranassessmentofgeographicalparameters,thenumberofstructurestobeputintheselectedareaisdetermined.Thisisfollowedbyanapprovalfromthevillagemembersandstakeholders;thestructureismadewiththehelpoftheJCBmachine–EarthExcavator.Thisprocessensuressustainablewatersecuritythroughaone-timeinvestment.Asaresult,therewasanaturalincreaseinrainwaterrechargefrom5%toupto80%.Manyfarmersobservedanincreaseinthewellwaterwithinamonthafterrainfall;earlier,theperiodwasatleasttwotothreemonths.Theconservationofirrigation-powerandtheeffortstotransportthemfromfardistancesbenefittedthecommunity.Thishelpedinwaterconservationandenvironmentalsustainability.

Life-skill education

Theprogrammeaimstoempoweradolescentgirlsandprovidethemwithtrainingonlifeskillsandawarenessonsocialissuesbasedongenderdiscrimination.Italsotargetstheimprovementofsexualandreproductivehealthamongyoungwomenandreducesmaternalandneonatalmorbidity—earlymarriageandmotherhoodresultsinhighprevalenceofmaternalandneonatalmortality,miscarriagesandstillbirths.Baselinedataoftheareashowsthat45%ofwomengotmarriedbefore18yearsofage,67%reportedantenatalmorbidityandonly14%ofyoungmarriedwomenusedfamily-planningmethods.Amongadolescentgirls,only4%ofgirlsdisplayeddecision-makingskillsand16%unmarriedgirlsdroppedoutofformalschooling.Prevalenceofanaemiawashighamongwomenofallagegroups.

Theprogrammeisimplementedinthreepartswithadifferenttargetpopulation.Thefirstpartoftheprojectisdirectedtowardstheempowermentofunmarriedadolescentgirlsthroughlifeskilleducation,improvetheircognitiveandpracticalskillsandincreasetheirself-esteemandself-efficacy.TheprogrammeisconductedthroughASHAworkersandcommunitypeereducatorsundertheRashtriyaKishorSwasthyaKaryakram,wherecounsellingsessionsarealsoprovided.

Thesecondpartoftheprogrammeisfocusedontheprotectionofyoungmarriedwomenfromadverseconsequencesofearlymarriagethroughincreasedinformationandaccesstosexualandreproductivehealth(SRH),utilisationofmaternityservicesduringpregnancy,andanincreaseininstitutionaldeliveriesandfamily-planningmethodsforspacingbetweenchildren.ASHAworkersfacilitateSRHservicesformarriedadolescentgirls.Theyprovideinter-personalcommunication(IPC)andcounsellingformarriedadolescentgirls,theirspousesandparentsatthehouseholdlevelandimplementthebehaviourchangecommunication(BCC)componentoftheproject.

Thethirdpartfocusesonattitudinalchangeamongyoungmen

toreducedomesticviolenceandgenderinequality.TheprojectisbeingimplementedbythestaffoftheInstituteofHealthManagementPachod(IHMP)byprovidingboysandyoungmenwitheducationonlifeskillsandengagingingroupandindividualcounsellingsessions.

Theprogrammehasledtoanincreaseinyearsofformalschoolingofunmarriedadolescentgirls,withimprovedadaptiveskillsandself-esteem.Therehasalsobeenadecreaseintheinstancesofearlymarriages.Amongstyoungmarriedwomen,thereisanincreaseinthenumberofpeopleaccessingantenatal,post-natalandfamilyplanningservices.Therateofmaternalmorbidityhasreduced,anda10%increaseinthetreatmentofmaternalcomplicationscomparedtothebaselinewasrecordedinjustoneyearofprogrammeimplementation.

Thisprogrammeaimstoimprovethereadingskillsofchildrenbyenhancingtheirvocabularyandexposingthemtoawidevarietyofbooks.Ithasbeenrepeatedlyreportedthatgrade-levellearningoutcomesamongstudentsingovernmentandmunicipalityschoolshavenotbeenaddressed.Youngstudentseithercannotreadorwriteatagrade-appropriatelevelandeveniftheycan,therearenotenoughbookstodevelopreadinghabitsinthem.Theimplementationoflibrarieswasinitiatedinsevenmunicipalityschools.Theyhavenowbeenimplementedin48municipalschoolsandnineaffordableprivateschoolswiththehelpoftwoNGOpartners.

Theprogrammetargetsstudentsfrom1stto7thgrades.Itisinprocessduringschoolhourswherereadingmaterialismadeavailableforminimumoffourhoursduringtheweek.Studentsareassistedduringclasshoursbytrainedcommunityanimatorscalledbookfairies.Eachclassgetsa90-minutesessioneveryweek,whichconsistsofreading,playingvocabularygames,singingandstorytelling.Activitieslikedrawingandreadingandstorytellingcompetitionsarealsoconductedasapartoftheprogramme,togrowandsustaintheirinterestinreading.Studentsfromthe2ndto7thgradesgettocarryabookforreadingathomeforaweek.

Alongwithenhancingstudents’readingabilities,thefocusisalsodirectedatimprovingcomprehensionandself-expression.Childrenfrom2ndto4thgradesaregivenonestandard-appropriatepassagepermonthandareaskedquestionsbasedonthepassage.One-offactivitieslikestorytellingeventsandbookexhibitionsarealsoheldtocreatestudents’interestinlanguagelearningandreading.

Periodicassessmentsareconductedattheendofeveryyeartomonitortheprogressandimpactoftheprogramme.Theprogrammehashelpedbridgegapsandaccessgrade-levelreadingmaterialtochildrenbelongingtotheeconomicallyweakersectionsofthesociety.Thisinterventionisexpectedtoteachahabitofreadinginyoungmindsandassistindesigning

specificinputstobridgelearninggapsafteridentificationoftheneedsandshortcomingsofacademicallyweakerchildren.

Empowerment of differently-abled women

TheprogrammeaimstoempowerandimprovethequalityoflifeofdifferentlyabledwomeninPune.Personswithdisabilities(PWDs)facealotofdiscriminationandmarginalisation,astheylackaccesstoessentialservicesandarerestrictedinmovementduetolackofadequateinfrastructureprovidingthemwitheasyaccess.Theirinabilitytocontributetowardsfamilyincomeandincurringexpensesintreatmentandmedicationisseenasanadditionalburden,especiallyinaloweconomichouseholdandaresubjecttoridicule.ThesituationfurtheraggravateswhenitcomestowomenPWDs,whoareseenasliabilitiesandhencearenottreatedwithrespectastheirneedsareaddressedbasedontheconvenienceoftheirfamilymembers.GITSpartneredwiththeNGOHelplifetohelpprovideassistancetodifferentlyabledwomentoempowerthemtoleadagoodqualitylife.

Throughtheprogramme,differentinitiativeswereundertakentocatertothevaryingneedsofthetargetbeneficiaries.Theplanprovidesaccommodation,foodandclothingtodifferentlyabledwomenandgirlsfromlow-economiccommunities.TherecipientscancontinuetheireducationandalsoundergoskilltraininginadditiontocomputerandspokenEnglishclasses.Thewomenandgirlsstayforadurationoftwo-threeyears,duringwhichtheyarealsoprovidedwithcounsellingsessionsalongwiththeirparents,andaregularsupportsystemthroughoutthetraining.Postcompletionofskilltraining,the

beneficiariesarealsoofferedplacementsupportorhelptostarttheirownenterprisetomakealiving.Community-basedsupportwasprovidedtofinancelivelihoodgenerationactivitiesundertakenbydifferentlyabledwomenandalsomeninsomeinstances.

Theprogrammehashadanoutreachof100womenwith80%ofthegirlsbeinggraduatesorpost-graduates.About70%oftheskilltraininggirlsaresuccessfullyemployedwithanaverageincomeofINR12,000permonth,andaround60%ofthebeneficiarieswhoreceivedcommunity-basedsupportaresuccessfullyrunningtheirmicro-enterprises.Itisalsopertinenttomentionthatalmost70%ofthetotalrecipientsarefinanciallyindependentand50%ofthemaresupportingtheirparentsandfamily.Thishasledtoanimmensechangeinthewomenandgirls’perspectivetoboostself-confidence.

Rejuvenation of Konasandra Lake at Jigani, Bengaluru

Theprojectaimstoaddresstheissueofcontaminationoflakesduetosolidwasteandlackofpropermaintenance.TheKonasandraLakeissituatedinKonasandraVillage,whichisapproximately50kmawayfromBengaluru.Thevillagepopulationisdependentonthelakefortheirwaterneeds.Sincethelakeissurroundedbyindustries,itwasbeingcontaminatedwithgranitewastes,plastics,junksandothersubstances.Thecontaminationandwaterpollutionhadledtoascarcityofqualitywaterandadecreaseinthewaterholdingcapacityofthelake.

UndertheSrijan-Anahatprogramme,restorationworkforthelakewasexecutedwiththehelpofSayTrees,anenvironmentaltrust.Acombinationoftechniquesandmethodswasadoptedtoensurecleanandnaturalwatersourceinthelake.Throughdesiltingandcreatingbroadandstrongbunds,therehasbeenathree-foldincreaseinthewater-holdingcapacityofthelake.Technologicalinterventionssuchasnaturalfiltrationandnaturalbiologicalsystemswereusedintheproject.Thesemethodshelpedensurethatfilteredwaterentersandaccumulatesinthelakeandexcesswatergoestotheotherlakethroughfurtherfiltrationintheoutletchannel.

Thepollutantshavebeenremovedthroughfiltrationmethod,andgoodqualitywaterissubsequentlybeingstoredwhichcanbeusedforcows,cattle,birds,etc.Theprojecthashelpedinmaintainingecologyandbiodiversity,astherehasbeenanincreaseofbirdsandaquaticlifeinthelakeandagradualincreaseinyieldofwateratborewells.Theincreasedwater-holdingcapacityofthelakewouldcontributetowardsagriculturalyieldincreaseandthusimprovetheincomeoffarmers.Also,creatingandstrengtheningofbundsaroundthelakehasresultedinbetterconnectivitytothevillageallowingpeopletomovearoundsafely.Morethan1,000citizenswereinvolvedinthisprojectwiththeaimofinstillingasenseofresponsibilitytowardsmaintainingitandreplicatingthemodel.

Rural primary school development programme at Sutarkond, Mahad

Theprojectaimstoimprovefemaleliteracyrateandcontributetowardsimprovingtheoverallliteracyrate.TheliteracyrateinGondalevillagewas76.21%ascomparedto82.34%forMaharashtrain2011.Thefemaleliteracyratestoodat66.98%ascomparedto85.97%formales.Theprojectworkedtowardsimprovingthequalityofeducation,reducingdrop-outratesandabsenteeismduetohealthreasons,especiallyforgirlsthroughdevelopingbasicinfrastructuralfacilitiesatschool.

Theproject,undertakeninpartnershipwiththeIndianAssociationofHumanValues(IAHV),aimedatprovidingholisticeducationwiththepotentialoffacilitatingcognitive,physical,emotional,socialandspiritualgrowthfortheunderprivilegedchildren.Anengagingandsafelearningenvironmentwascreatedthroughvariousinfrastructuralinterventions.Inordertocurtaildiseases,addressabsenteeismandteachgoodhygienepracticestostudentsandteachers,measurestoenhancehealthcareandhygienewereundertaken.Studentswereprovidedwithe-learningfacilities,andclasseswereorganisedforteachers,whichhelpedthemdevelopaninterestinthesubject.

Therehasbeenasignificantimprovementinthefemaleliteracyratefrom66.98to75%atpresent.Thetoiletsforchildrenwererevamped,andnewtoiletswereconstructedforthestaff,whichhasledtoanincreaseintheattendanceofthestudentsandasharpdeclineinstomach-relatedillnessesby25%.High-qualityROsystemswereinstalledintheschoolsleadingtoadecreaseininstancesofwater-bornediseasesby30%.Therehasbeenanimprovementinthelearninglevelsofstudents,whichhasledtoabetteracademicperformanceinprogressreportsbyaround45%.Accesstoqualityeducationhasimprovedsignificantly,asearlieritwasnotpossibletoprovideeducationtochildrenuptothe10thgradeduetoinfrastructurallimitationsandhealthconcerns.

Emergency hospitalisation for health restoration and survival of the underprivileged

Theprojectaimstoimproveaccesstohealthcareandprovidesupportforemergencyhospitalisationforhealthrestorationandsurvivalofpeoplebelongingtotheunderprivilegedsectionsofthesociety.ThereisalackofICCUinfrastructureandavailabilityoffull-timephysiciansingovernmenthospitalsandhealthcentres.Patientswitheconomicallyweakerbackgroundsoftenstruggletogetmedicaltreatmentbecauseofalackoffinancialsupportforavailingemergencytreatment.

Withanaimtominimisetheproblemsfacedbythem,theNGOSevaYagnaSamitihasbeenworkingtowardsprovidingaccesstomedicalservicestoneedypatientsforthelast15yearsattheCivilHospitalinBharuch.Throughthisproject,personsfromunderprivilegedbackgroundswereprovidedwithaccesstoICU/ICCUfacilities,properdiagnosisontime,medicinesandhospitalisationincriticalconditions.

Theprojectfacilitatedmedicalassistancefor7,189patientsandprovided7,644patientswithmedicalandalliedservicesfromApril2016-March2019.NICUandPICUserviceswereofferedtoneonatesandchildrentoaidinnourishmentandfasterrecovery,aswellasprovidesupportforcomplicatedcasesofneonatal,paediatricsurgeries.Higherqualityandupdatedmedicines,injectionsanddressingswereprovidedtoburnpatientsassuchmedicinesdonotfallundergovernmentsupplybutarehighlyrequiredforfasterhealingandgangrenecontrol.Temporaryadoptionfororphansandtheelderlyisalsofacilitated,andSevaYagnaSamititakesresponsibilitiesofpatientsandmanagesfuneralsincaseofdeath.Theprojecthascontributedtowardsanincreaseinaccesstohealthcareandhasreachedouttoaround21,567people.

ICICIFoundation’sprojectaimstoimprovetheknowledgeandskillbaseofagrarianfolksandprovidethemwithmultiplesourcesofincome.TheIndianruraleconomysuffersfromaseverelackofviableandsustainablelivelihoodopportunities.About42%ofthepopulationofruralIndiadependsonagriculture,whichfacesvariouschallengeslikeseasonalfluctuation,weatherdependence,knowledgedeficit,poormarketlinkages,lackofwealthcreationandresourcecrunch.Inviewofthisagrarianplightandlackofopportunities,ICICIFoundationforInclusivegrowth,rolledoutitsRuralInitiativeprogrammetoprovidelivelihoodtrainingtothevillagers.Thiswasanall-arounddevelopmentprogrammetohelpthetraineesnotjustinthefieldoftheirpracticebutwithothersoft/entrepreneurshipskillsrequiredtostartabusiness.

Ourcountryishometoalargenumberofchildrenatriskbecauseoflackofawarenessandpoorqualityofinstitutionalcare.Thesechildrenarepronetogettingpulledintotheviciouscycleofchildlabourortrafficking,andotherillegalactivities.Kale,alongwithCSA,believesthatallchildrenhavethepotentialtorepresentthenationifgivenpositivenurturing,abalancedupbringingandanopportunitytogeteducated,especiallyintheirformativeyears.

TheprogrammesaimtowardsenablingPWDs-deaf-blindandmulti-sensoryimpairments(MSIs)toreachandmaintaintheiroptimal(physical,sensory,intellectual,psychologicalandsocial)functionallevels.KHShaspartneredwithSenseInternationalIndia(SenseIndia)fortheirCSRprogramme,whichisbeingimplementedinAhmedabad,Gujarat.Throughtheplan,KHSprovideseducationalandrehabilitationservicestotargetbeneficiariesandengagesincapacitybuildingofparents,familymembersandspecialeducatorsthroughtraining.SamagraShiksha’s–aneducationalinitiativebytheIndiangovernment-teachersandmembersofNGOsworkinginthefieldofdisabilityinGujaratarealsobeingtrainedonissuesrelatedtodeaf-blindness.Theprogrammeassociates,incollaborationwithdeaf-blindregionalcentres(DbRC),aimtostrengthen,expandanddevelopopportunitiestoensurethatahighernumberofpeoplewithdeaf-blindnesscanleadagoodqualitylife.

Deaf-blindnessisidentifiedasadifferentdisabilitywithvaryingdegreesofhearingandvisualimpairment.Individualswithdeaf-blindnessandMSIsalsosufferfromadditionalphysicalandmedicalconditionsandhenceexperienceextremechallengesinperformingday-to-dayactivities.Theprojectpromotescommunity-basedrehabilitationandinclusionofchildrenandadultswithdeaf-blindness.Therehabilitationteamcomprisesaspecialeducator,vocationaltrainer,

physiotherapist,andoccupationalandspeechtherapist.

Throughvariousawarenesssessions,theprogrammehasledtoenhancedsensitisationandadvocacyfortherightsandneedsofpeoplewithdeaf-blindnessandMSIs.Over180specialeducators,59para-medicalprofessionals,28Anganwadiworkersand30NGOprofessionshaveundergonecapacitybuildingtraining,and241teachersassociatedwiththeSamagaraShikshamissionhavebeentrainedforidentificationandinclusionofchildrenwithdeaf-blindnessinmainstreamschools.

Theprogrammeaimstoprovidestudentsandemployeesfromvarioushighschools,collegesandcorporateswiththeopportunitytovolunteerbyteachingstudentsingovernmentschools.KHSpartneredwiththeNGOYuvaUnstoppabletoimplementtheprogrammeacross10municipalityschoolsinAhmedabad.Theplanwastoimproveawarenessanddevelopasenseofcompassionandresponsibilityamongvolunteersaddressingsocialproblems.Theyworkedtwohoursperweekinordertocontributetobettereducation.

Theinitiativewasimplementedintwophases–Inthefirstphase,everyvolunteerhadtoengagein25actsofkindnessandcontribute50hoursofteachingingovernmentschools.Asetcurriculumwasdesignedforrespectivesubjectstobetaught,withtheintenttoaddressthegapsinformaleducationandmakelearningfunandinterestingforchildren.KHSMachinerydeployedadedicatedteamofpaidvolunteerstomanageandutilisethegrowingnetworkofvolunteerswhileensuringthatnohoursofteachingweremissed.Thevolunteersalsoheldregularmeetingswiththeparentsandteachersandsupportedtheschoolmanagementcommitteeinconductingextra-curricularandco-curricularactivitiestoimprovetheengagementofstudentsinschoolactivities.

Thisprogrammeledtoanimprovementinattendanceandclassroomparticipationofstudentsinallthetargetschools.

Thestudentswerealsomadeawareofsanitation,hygieneandhealth.Thiswasinadditiontoinculcatingincreasedawareness,andasenseofresponsibilityandself-confidenceamongvolunteerstobringaboutpositivechangeforthesociety.Theprogrammewasconsideredasaninnovativemethodtoimprovenon-formaleducationtohelptheacademicallyweakerstudentsimprovetheirlearninglevels.

Girl Child Education Programme (GCEP)

Thisprogrammeaimedtoempowerandmobiliseyounggirlsbetweentheagegroupof6-14yearsbyprovidingqualityprimaryeducationuptothe5thgrade.Italsointendedtoincreaseaccessandenrolmenttobasicprimaryeducationthroughcommunitymobilisationandsubsequenttransitionintosecondaryeducationpostcompletionofthe5thgrade.ThetargetbeneficiariesweregirlswhowereoutoftheformalschoolingsystemandbelongedtothesociallydisadvantagedandeconomicallymarginalisedruralcommunitiesinIndia.

ItwasaninitiativeoftheNGOIIMPACT,whichistheCSRpartnerofKonecranesandDemagPrivateLimited.TheprogrammewasimplementedbyestablishingmodellearningcentresacrossruralIndiaforaperiodoffive-sixyears.Thesewereonlyteacher-ledcentres,impartingprimaryleveleducationtogirlchildrenusingMulti-GradeMulti-Level(MGML)grouping.TheMGMLgroupingwasdoneduetoinfrastructureandpedagogicalreasons,andthesystemprovidedtrainingtochildrenbasedontheirleveloflearning,competenciesandcapabilities.Thecentrerantillthetimealltheenrolledgirlsachievedafirmgroundinginprimaryeducation.Theteachersandsupervisorsattheselearningcentresunderwenttrainingeveryquartertoensurestandardqualitydeliveryofknowledgeacrossallcentres.Theprogrammealsoencouragedsettingupofcentremanagement

Theprojectaimstoimproveaccesstowater,developmentandlandscapingoftheShendraMaharashtraIndustrialDevelopmentCorporation(MIDC)areainAurangabad,Maharashtra.Shendaisanindustrialareathathasmanyvisitorsandpassengersthatusethehighway.Theareaalongtheroadwasnotmaintainedandwasanunpleasantsightforvisitorsandpassersbyalike.Itlackedaprovisionforsafedrinkingwaterforastretchoffive-sixkilometre.Peoplehadtoeitherbuypackagedwaterorconsumeunhygienicwateratlocalhotels.

Undertheinitiative,theeastandwestsideofthehighwayjunctionwaslandscapedwitha260sq.m.lawnattheentranceoftheShendraarea.Thelightingoftheareawasalsoimprovedundertheinitiative,cateringtothesafetynormsduringdarkhours.AccesstodrinkingwaterwasenhancedthroughtheinstallationofanROsystematthehighwayjunctionprovidingvisitorsandpassersbywithfree,cleandrinkingwater24hours.Themaintenanceofthehighwayjunctionandthelandscapedareaisregularlyundertakenbythecompany.

Theprojectaimstoprovideeducationalandvocationaltrainingtowomenfromunderprivilegedbackgroundsandlow-incomehousehold.Itfocusesonthebeautyandwellnessindustry,whichisamongthetopthreesectorsrequiringthemaximumskilledworkforceandisestimatedtoneedabout1.42crorepeopleby2022.Thereisimmensepotentialintheindustry,asIndiaisalsoemergingtobeamongthetopfivemarketsforthebeautyandwellnessindustry.

L’Oréal,throughitsBeautyforaBetterLifeproject,aimstoempowercommunitiesbyprovidingskilltraininginindustry-relevantbeautycourses.Theplanofferswomeninterestedinmakingacareerinthebeautyserviceindustrywiththenecessaryskillsetsandlinkagesrequiredtoearnaliving.ThetrainingisconductedwithsupportfromtheNGO,SambhavFoundation,tomobiliseyoungwomen,establishaconnectionwithcommunitiesanddeveloplinkageswithsalons.Thecandidatesundergoathree-month-longclassroomsessioncomprisingtheoryandpracticalaspectsatthetrainingcentres.Afterthecompletionoftheclassroomtraining,eachcandidateisprovidedwithon-the-jobtrainingfortwomonthsatanearbysalon.Oncethecandidatescompletetheirfive-monthtraining,theyundergoanassessment,andthesuccessfulonesareconsideredforcertificationandplacementassistance.

Theprojecthasgiventrainingtoover7,400womenthrough

For Young Women in Science (FYWIS) scholarship programme

L’Oréal’sprogrammeaimstoempowerandenablemorewomentopursueaneducationinscience-relatedstreams.Thegenderparityindex(GPI)andwomenparticipationinscience-relatedstreamsremainskewed,withsciencebeingperceivedasasubjectassociatedwithmen.Limitedfinancialabilityandresourceshinderavenuesforhighereducationforgirlsfromthelowermiddle-incomegroup,especiallyiftheydecidetopursuefurtherstudiesinthefieldofscienceandtechnology.

ThroughtheFYWISscholarshipprogramme,L’Oréalaimstopromotemoreyounggirlstopursuegraduationinscienceandprovidethemandtheirfamilieswiththefinancialsupportnecessarytopursuetheirambitions.Withapan-Indiaoutreach,FYWIStargetsfinanciallyconstrainedhouseholdswithannualfamilyincomeoflessthanINR4lakhperannumandgirlswithover85%marksinthesciencestreamin12thstandard.ThescholarshipisgrantedtopromisingbuteconomicallydisadvantagedyoungwomenandcoverscollegefeesforstudyinanyscientificfieldinarecognisedcollegeoruniversityinIndia.ThroughtheFYWISscholarshipprogramme,thestudentsaresupportedwithuptoINR2.5lakh,grantedinequalannualinstalments(INR62,500)overtheperiodofthedegree.

TheprojectaimstoaddresshabitatdegradationatthefringesofBhimashankarWildlifeSanctuary,whichisapartoftheWesternGhatsofIndia.Largescalehumaninterventionssuchasslashandburnfarmingpractice,developmentalactivitiessuchasroads,flat-landagricultureandillegaltreefellingforthecommercialpurposehaveresultedinalossoftreecoveratasubstantiallevel.Duetothelossoftreecover,therehasbeenalarge-scalelooseningofsoilrendering,andtheareaispronetolandslidesandnaturaldisasters.

Education in municipality schools

ThisprogrammeaimstoimproveaccessandqualityofeducationinthemunicipalityschoolsofAhmedabad.Itendeavourstocreatemodelschoolswiththeirinfrastructure,teachingandoveralllearningexperiencematchingthestandardsofthestateboardschools.TheyareimplementingthisinitiativeinJasodanagarMunicipalSchoolandHathijanMunicipalSchool,Gujarat.Theschooladministrationenlistedthegapsthatneedtobeaddressedinboththemunicipalityschools.Milacron’sCSRCommittee,alongwithboththeschools’administration,mutuallyagreedupontheinterventionsthatweretobeundertakenunderCSRintherespectiveschools.

Thetargetwasonimprovingtheschools’infrastructure,teachingmethodologyandimplementingtheuseofadvancedtechnologyandteachingaid.Additionally,scholarshipsandspecialteachingclasses(undertakenbytheCSRteam)formathematics,science,andvalue-basedlearningwerealsointroducedinJashodanagarSchool.Throughthisprogramme,renovationandcleaningoftheschoolbuildingsweredone,anditeachingaidsandsmartclasseswith3Daudio-visualroomswereintroducedtoenhancethelearningexperienceofstudents.WaterstorageandROsystemswereprovidedtoensuresanitiseddrinkingwatertostudentsandstaff.Studentswerealsogivenscholarshipsandprimarystudymaterialincludingstationarykits,shoesandsocksandschoolbags.

Theprojectaimstoensureinclusive,equitablequalityeducationaswellaspromotelifelonglearningopportunitiesforall.Theaverageliteracyrateintheprojectareastandsat59%,whichislowerthanthedistrictaverages(Jamnagar–74%,Dwarka–69%).Mostofthechildrenarefirst-generationlearners,andthereisapronouncedgendergapwithincreasingdropoutratesforgirls.Around48%oftheadolescentsdropoutanddonotstudybeyondthe8thgrade.Throughmultipleinterventions,theprojectGramshikshaworkstowardsimprovingaccesstoeducationin15villagestobothchildrenandadults,coveringanagegroupof6-35years.

Theprojectaimstoaddressthedegradinghealthandenvironmentissuesposedthroughtheuseoftraditionalstovesthroughaneco-friendlyinnovation.Traditionalstovesusefuelwoodandleadtoincompletecombustion,wastageandemissionofharmfulsmoke.Toaddressthesechallenges,TataMotorsinventedanewcookstovethathasauniquedesignthatservesasanalternativetotheoldstovesinuse.

Theprojectaimstoupliftpeoplewithphysicaldisabilitybyprovidingthemwithaccesstoartificialmobilityaids.AccordingtoCensusofIndia(2011),around2.2%ofIndia’spopulationstruggleswithsomekindofdisability,includinglocomotors,visualimpairment,hearingimpairment,speech,learningdisability,autismandmultipledisabilities.Therefore,theprojectseekstoprovidefreeprostheticlimbstoidentifiedbeneficiariesatMumbaiandNashik.

Inordertoempowerpeoplewithdisabilitytobemoreindependentandself-reliant,theprojectprovidesthemwithfreeaidsandapplianceslikeJaipurfoot,callipers,crutchesandprosthetichands,wheelchairs,tricycle,andhearingaids.Accesstothesemobilityaidswouldfurthercontributetothesocialandeconomicempowermentoftheseindividuals.
