Does the brain work differently in people who are exposed to substances before birth? The Developmental Cognitive Neuroimaging Laboratory of Dr. Elizabeth Sowell at CHLA/USC is studying the effects o f prenatal exposure to alcohol on brain development. We will take Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) pictures of the brain to see if there are differences between exposed and non-exposed children in brain shape and activation. We will also see if exposed and non-exposed children differ in their performance on tests that measure the way people think (paper and computer-based tests). You may be eligible to participate if your child: has a history of exposure to large quantities of alcohol before birth OR does not have a history of prenatal alcohol exposure and is normally developing with no developmental delays AND  is between 10 and 16 years old  is an English speaker  has no metal in the body (i.e., orthodontic braces)  does not have anxiety about being in enclosed spaces Participation involves 5 visits over two years. Subjects receive $20/hour. Appointments can be scheduled at times of convenience.
