How did you come to be in Didsbury? After studying singing at the University of Montana in my home state, I moved abroad to continue my postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. Didsbury was the first place in Manchester that felt like home! I’ve been here seven years now.

What do you miss about home?Apart from family, the space; and the mountains. And definitely, unquestionably, Fudruckers, my favourite burger joint!

you describe opera as your ‘passion’. What is so special about opera compared with other musical genres? To do well it’s an ideal very seldom achieved. The physical and mental demands of using your body and natural acoustics to fill a space for the duration of a show can in itself take a lifetime to achieve. The acting skills required for the long arias, often no more than a few words repeated over several pages, are a challenge and

actors (wisely?) stop at just developing these skills alone. The necessary dramatic skills, coupled with the technical requirements of completing several shows a week, are a challenge to achieve simultaneously. Opera poses an immense challenge to get right, and when any company or individual is able to pull it off the metaphysical rewards for an audience as well as participants are immense.

Which operatic role/roles do you most covet and why?Hmmm...hard - ideal or wish list? Right now I’m really identifying with the scrappy, frustrated character of alien Blonde from Die Entführung, but some day I’d LOVE to perform the title role from Baby Doe in Colorado. Such a romantic story and lots and lots of tangents for my mind to wander away and explore! But only after several years when the lyric part of my voice is a bit more established.

Tell me about your involvement with streetwise opera.Streetwise is an incredible

organisation that uses music as a tool to help 500 homeless people a year throughout England and Wales move forward with their lives. I co-lead weekly workshops at the Booth Centre, Manchester, with a team of other leaders; we’re on a rota. The idea is that we teach them an opera currently being worked on by one of Streetwise’s partners, Opera North, and at the end of a module the group performs their own version and attends the production by Opera North. It’s such an amazing thing to watch an individual who initially doesn’t possess enough self-confidence to speak their name in front of peers develop in a matter of months the confidence to sing or speak a solo in front of strangers.

Complete the sentence, ‘i love Didsbury because …’‘..of the green! So many parks and lovely trees in such a little space! And because of Thyme Out - still one of my favourite places to eat, though I don’t let myself go if I’m not with someone as I’d easily eat every meal there!’

A merican soprano, elise Nurre Dye, is blessed with a light coloratura, prized by critics for its ‘silver quality’. she

regularly appears on concert and recital platforms which have included performances with the Northern sinfonia, the Hallé and Manchester Camerata. elise talks here about her love of opera, cupcakes and her work with the homeless charity streetwise opera.

Within weeks, however, an unlikely friendship develops between Sheba and the vinegarish history teacher, spinster Barbara Covett, now nearing retirement age. When married Sheba becomes the focus of tabloid outrage, having

been caught out in her affair with an under-age school boy, Barbara remains her staunchest ally, electing to chronicle events in her friend’s defence. But all is not as it seems and the witless Sheba must eventually face the truth regarding the

treachery of her only friend and confidante.

Zoë Heller’s sly little tale of obsession and betrayal literally drips malice from the first page. Narrated in Barbara’s dyspeptic tones, the novel is infused with her troubled – and troubling - psyche. Lonely, repressed and

snobbish, Barbara exhibits, in her sinister fixation with Sheba, a volatile jumble of love-hatred, desire, rage and social envy. And while the narrative is apparently concerned with the younger woman’s crime and resulting media circus, the novel’s real impetus is provided by the barbed and disquieting observations of its unreliable narrator. ‘This is not a story about me,’ insists Barbara, but of course it is.

The staff at JP & Brimelow took part in the Manchester Midnight Walk on 23rd June. Much fun was had and money raised for St Ann’s.

St Ann’s Hospice provides excellent care and support to people living with or affected by life-limiting illnesses. As a charity, all services are free of charge, and to continue with it’s work, St Ann’s needs to raise £16,000 each day. More than 500 people were entertained by Punch & Judy, Mother Hen and huge, exotic birds during a magical afternoon of puppetry and storytelling at Didsbury’s mysterious Parsonage Gardens on Sunday 30 June.

The event was one of the closing

highlights of a nine-day celebration which drew 5000 festival goers to the area’s bars, churches and other venues to enjoy music, dance, comedy, literature, theatre, film and visual arts.

Other highlights of Festival week included an evening of poetry

and brass with Simon Armitage and sell-out performances by jazz star Matt Halsall and world-class pianist Kathryn Stott & Friends. The Kathryn Stott concert raised nearly £2,000 for local charity, Francis House Hospice.

Festival Director, Maria Stripling, said: ‘We were delighted to see so many people of all ages enjoying such a fantastic and diverse range of events during DAF 2013. The festival brought together some of the best artists – not just from Didsbury and Manchester – but from all over the UK.

‘I’d like to thank

everyone involved - all the artists, sponsors, volunteers and local organisations who have been so generous with their time and support and have helped make this year’s DAF such a great success.’

Organised by a group of enthusiastic local residents, the aim of DAF is to celebrate the arts and the wealth of talent, diversity and the vibrant community that make Didsbury so special. Since its launch in 2009, the area’s annual celebration of the arts has now become a fixture on the local calendar.

Hundreds of families enjoyed picnics and puppets in the park as the sun shone down on the final day of

Didsbury Arts Festival 2013.

We’ve seen the best of some perennials that will need a tidy up now (some will reappear for an encore later if we’re lucky) – geranium, aquilegia, nepeta, penstemon and alchemilla mollis for example can be cut back and wisteria pruned. Lavenders can be clipped once they have flowered as can early summer flowering shrubs like philadelphus and weigela.

For a stunning sunny border try a selection of silver foliage

plants such as Brachyglottis (formerly Senecio) – a lovely shrub that has leaves with sliver undersides and a surprising yellow flower. Team this with Stachys byzantina at the front of the border, also known as ‘Lamb’s ears’ not surprisingly because of its glaucous, furry, bunny-ear-shaped leaves.

Silver/purple furry flowering spires compliment the foliage from July onwards

and look great with other complementary colours – Geranium ‘Johnson’s Blue’; Eryngium giganteum; Echinops bannaticus – the latter holding perfectly formed blue or white globes on stately silver stems. Other silver foliage plants you could try are the various varieties of Artemesia – ‘Powis Castle’ being one of the most famous; Santolina chamaecyparissus – also known as cotton lavender for those who don’t want to attempt the nifty Latin title and for a stalwart shrub, Eleagnus ‘Quicksilver’.

For a slightly prehistoric look, you could try some of the Verbascum varieties (V.bombyciferum for a particularly silver variety). This is not for the feint hearted – Verbascums are serious statement plants and will require a bit of space. Vita Sackville West described the colours of her Verbascums as “dusty, fusty, musty” which is not dissimilar to how I would describe myself after a day in the garden in July.

T he spring romp through June, displaying the vibrancy of the expectant garden in all its fresh hues and promise, brings us to a calmer July where the garden

pauses for breath and revels in all its glorious, colourful display. This is our summer and we now see the height of flowering potential in the garden borders with perennials that will take us through until september crossing over with the last of the late spring colour.

Peter’s achievements as coach and player were recognised in a day of celebration at the club.

The principal organisers were his close friend and former European Tour colleague Andrew Murray, a life member at Didsbury, and President Paul

Dalby.

The day began with a pro am which attracted many top professionals including Didsbury course record holder Paul Eales and David Screeton.

The winning team led by Peter’s close friend and Euro Tour official Paul Carragill included Captain Sandy Jones, past Captain Mike Campbell and Cheshire President Ron Harrison.

The buffet meal saw the friends and family entertained with pictures of Peter’s long time in the game, which has seen him win numerous local titles, as well as being the Northern PGA Captain, stirring many fond memories.

There were video tributes from the PGA Captain, top PGA referee John Parrymore and coaching legend John Jacobs.

Peter gave a great insight into his life as a pro at Didsbury and was presented with a watch to commemorate his service to the club to conclude a real day to remember for Peter, his family and friends in the game.

They are a group of six to eight men, who enjoyed their soccer for many years with Bedians and also played a big part in developing the club’s fine facilities on Millgate Lane over the past three decades.

Each year they walk between 150-160 miles in a week and over the past three years have been enjoying the Macmilllan Way which stretches across England for well over 400 miles.

In July they will complete the Macmillan Way West to raise funds for Genesis, Breast Cancer Prevention Research,

based in the Nightingale Centre, Wythenshawe Hospital.

Leading the walk will be 80-year-old Peter Fleming who is suffering from breast cancer. Peter was operated on in 2005 and all seemed well but it has returned and is now inoperable.

Walk organiser Keith Marsden said: “The illness has not stopped Peter from participating fully in life and he will be taking part in this year’s walk as normal.”

Peter added: “Male breast cancer is rare but our aim, as well as raising funds, is to raise

awareness amongst men of the condition especially where a female member of the family has had breast cancer during their fertile years.

“Also we need to raise awareness amongst women that the male offspring may be at risk in later life as well as their daughters.”

Anyone wishing to sponsor the walk can donate by contacting www.justgiving/genesis

An influx of new players, a determined coach, captain and vice captain produced a bright pre-season which continued throughout the season in a battle for top spot with Formby.

A big 8-1 win at Mossley Hill in the final game saw them overtake Formby to be crowned North Division Two champions.

But a restructuring of the North League meant that the

Greys had to enter a play-off programme involving a month of extra training and three further matches against the winners of other leagues.

They drew 1-1 with Neston, beat Newcastle 4-0 to face Leeds in a final crunch match which went to the wire after Greys had secured a 3-1 interval lead only for Leeds to level with two minutes to go.

Leeds were then awarded a free hit just outside the D but tight defending saw it deflected wide to set up great scenes of celebration as the culmination of nine months of hard work and dedication from all involved.
