Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from West Didsbury & Chorlton. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game.

It has been a strange period since we last convened here at Brocstedes Park for the visit of table topping Runcorn Linnets. It was a daunting task for the hosts but we set out our stall to be solid and frustrate the free scoring Linnets and they stuck to their task well dropping deep and allowing the visitors to have possession in the less dangerous areas of the field. The teams were level at the interval but parity was short lived after the restart with Mark Houghton lofting an effort over Rory Crowther in the 50th minute and rather than fold this actually brought Town out of themselves as they went looking for an equaliser efforts from Andy Gillespie and Chad Whyte had Linnets hearts in mouths but failed to find the net and despite an excellent performance Town were denied a worthy share of the spoils. We then made the trip to Winsford and Town had an early chance when Andy Gillespie broke the defensive line only to be hauled back by Walker when through on goal a free kick was awarded but the centre half who was the last man wasn't even cautioned when he really should have been talking an early bath and the set piece came to nothing. Later in the half the hosts again rode their luck as Egan didn’t see a card for either of his two cautionable dissent offences which could and should have seen them reduced to 9 men. Winsford broke the deadlock on 43 minutes after a spell of possession which saw the ball delivered into the box from the right wing and the ball was half cleared with braking to Daniel McDonnell on the edge of the box and he found the bottom left hand corner of the net. The game was an even

affair in the second half before a contentious penalty awarded for handball midway through the half was well saved by Crowther in the Town goal and with Town pressing for an equaliser they were caught first by a strike from Noon and soon afterwards Egan put the result beyond doubt. We then took the short trip to Bootle where we repeat Saturday’s result suffering a 3-0 reverse but the performance was very different on a night when lady luck appeared to be very much in the home dugout. Town dominated the early exchanges only for Bootle to

take the lead when an effort which was going well wide struck a teammate on the backside and the rebound was fired home. This was followed by a gift of a goal as we gave the ball away in a dangerous area. Before a second half fight back which saw us do everything but score seeing snatched clearances from the hosts flying left, right and centre but not finding the net and a counter attack saw The Bucks put the result beyond doubt with a quarter of an hour left to play. We will need to up our game and add that finishing touch which has been lacking in the last four matches if we are to take a return from this afternoon’s contest against West Didsbury & Chorlton. Many thanks to today’s match sponsor Contego Security UK and ball sponsor Anthony Hall - your support of greatly appreciated. Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory you support is vital to the cause! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC have come a long way in their 105 years since 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight

for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the Lancashire and Cheshire League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our

centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second

year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can

West Didsbury & Chorlton whilst remaining financially viable. Further improvements saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware.

2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges both on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improved the spectator facilities ensuring retention of Premier Division status with new grass pitches and youth teams also added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. Other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club played host to Brighouse Town from the Evo-Stik league in the FA Cup Preliminary Round at the end of August having been given a walk-over by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907 due to a change of entity, unfortunately the club went down to a 0-3 defeat.

From the Chair Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division game against our friends and rivals West Didsbury and Chorlton. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality. We will be hoping our

run of poor results comes to end this afternoon with four successive defeats and a mixed bag of performances which highlight our inconsistency so far this season. If we are going to ensure league safety we need to start picking up points but as we know that’s easier said than done in an ultra-competitive league. Ian Price has been hampered (like many managers) by holidays, injuries, player work commitments, etc and we’ve seen lots of personnel changes on a game to game basis which has not helped. Last Friday the club received the news that Alex Gillespie had suffered a broken leg in a freak accident during the warm-up for a College game! At the time of writing Alex was in plaster awaiting an operation to insert a metal plate in his leg. Our best wishes go to him for a speedy recovery. The weekend saw the departure of one of our coaching staff as Paul Jones stepped down due to a recent change in jobs which has meant he’s been unable to commit the time to his role with the club. Our sincere thanks and best wishes go to Paul who had been with us for two and a half years. I ’m sure we will see him at a game or two in the not too distant future. I know Jeff Voller has ‘picked over the bones’ of recent 1st team results in his programme notes and Glyn Jones’ match reports for the games against Linnets, Winsford and Bootle are in today’s programme. I had the pleasure of watching the U21s on Sunday morning and I still can ’t believe they bowed out of the Liverpool County FA Intermediate Cup. The game ended 3-3 after extra time with the visitors Ambrose Ellis FC progressing with a 4-5 penalty shoot out win. The U21s had numerous gilt edge chances across the 120 minutes and will be disappointed not to have made progress. The U18s tough start to life in the NWYA League continued with a 0-2 home defeat to Chester FC Colts while the U17s maintained their 100% start with a 1-2 win at Knowlsey South U17s, their four win from four South Lancs Counties U17s League encounters. I noticed when updated the stats on our centre pages that our last three games have seen the lads free of cautions - for which they are to be congratulated. However, it reminded me of the game at Winsford United last Saturday where the referee asked a Winsford player to go and fetch a ball he had back-heeled some distance off the pitch and onto the terracing in frustration of not being awarded a throw-in. I am not sure the referee’s request of ‘go and get that ball or I will card you’ is strictly within the rules. The player’s reply ‘it’s like being at school’ was probably true but at least the referee saved him a tenner! On Tuesday evening we travel to Burscough in the Liverpool Senior Cup 1st Round and we are back at home on Sunday 5th October, 3pm when we entertain Nostell Miners Welfare in FA Vase. Enjoy the game . . . John McKiernan, Chairman St Helens Town AFC

Stockport Sports have confirmed that manager Asa Crowe has resigned from his post with immediate effect. Stockport born and bred, Asa joined the club following the departure of former manager Stuart Rudd in October 2013. Chairman Wayne Ashworth said: “I had discussions with Asa last week, and due to work commitments he feels he is unable to commit the time and effort required to manage a squad at this level of football.

"We spoke at length regarding possible solutions but work must come first and I fully understand and appreciate Asa’s predicament. "I would like to place on record the gratitude of everyone connected with Stockport Sports for the work and effort Asa has put in over the last year. He’s a genuine bloke who loves football, he’s worked extremely hard behind the scenes and I am personally very grateful for all his efforts”. A further announcement will be made by the club in due course.

NWCFL News Friday Night’s for Football! It was during the close season that Colls manager Michael Clegg came to me, and told me that he had been in liaison with Craig Thomas, his counterpart at Daisy Hill, and they had a proposal to put their respective committees. They wanted to raise the profile of the clubs and get the Colls v Daisy Hill games to the widest possible audience. I called a meeting of our committee Colin Crompton style, and the resolution was

passed. Bob Naylor and his gang at New Sirs concurred and it was official - the Colls v Daisy Hill league games would be played on Friday nights rather than Saturdays. I had discreetly requested that league fixture secretary John Reid pencil our games in for a Saturday so the anticipated move to Friday would be smooth sailing. This immediately took out the potential our games being pencilled in on midweek dates which would have torpedoed our plans. John did us proud!

The Colls and Daisy Hill grounds are 2.66 miles apart according to AA route planner and have been in competition for decades, but there is not the fierce rivalry that Colls and LR share. I once even tried to come up with a name for a Colls and Daisy derby but my imagination was lacking and I eventually tagged it ‘The derby with no name’. Friday night football at our level is as rare as rubies and the clubs have joined forces to provide football fans an opportunity to watch a good old fashioned local match up on a night where punters may be crying out for a football fix. Emmerdale, Corrie and Eastenders can be recorded quite easily on the TiVo box. I am hopeful the ground hoppers will be happy to notch another game and followers of professional teams may be tempted to cast an eye on some non league talent. The venture may fall flat on it’s face but you have to take a risk sometimes. The idea may catch on though! If the game is a hit then maybe the NWCFL could set up regular Friday night matches. One game a week with as many different teams as possible getting involved. These games could become much anticipated with people travelling from miles around to watch the action.

Just like Colls and Daisy, clubs could buddy up and play both their fixtures on a Friday night so one team doesn’t miss out on a money spinner. I have not done any market research and am certainly not trying to dictate league policy but I do think a Friday night NWCFL game could be a good innovation. By the way Colls host Daisy Hill on Friday 10 October, 7.45pm KO. Be there or be . . . Emil

Today’s Ball Sponsor This afternoon’s match ball sponsor is Anthony Hall who is another of our social media sponsor successes, having seen and responded to one of our many Tweets searching for club sponsors and new supporters – fingers crossed Anthony and his dad enjoy their visit to Brocstedes Park and hopefully we will see them again in the future. Not being our traditional ‘business sponsor’ and therefore not requiring a sponsor

advert Anthony was asked to put together some information about himself for today’s programme. About me. 56, going on 17. I can do deep and meaningful, as well as frivolous - in equal measure. Born with Spina Bifida I was doing extremely well until an operation went pear shaped in 2006, taking me off my legs. Single, although one has had ones moments. No kids...didn't like them when I went to school with them! University educated. Social work manager in St. Helens for many years until aforementioned operation. Whereupon I was initially sacked, which still rankles, reinstated, then medically retired as ones mobility deteriorated further.

I have lived on Merseyside since 1971. Father’s job brought us down here from the North East. My great love, apart from leggy blondes, with poor eyesight, are cars. I am fortunate to have both an old Bentley and a Rover convertible. Until recently, I also had a Porsche but three cars is rather silly for one person. Okay, so is two, but there we go. The private registration on the Bentley ends in FOF, as in F...OF! I was sick and tired of folk asking who owned the Bentley. Clearly thinking yours truly should be making wicker baskets somewhere. Trying, and mainly failing, to reinvent myself. Sadly, most folk look at me as if I’ve landed from Planet Zonk. ‘Does he take sugar?’ I hear them cry. My determination is sometimes mistaken for arrogance. Once handling oodles of voluntary work, as well as working part time; I cannot now get anyone to offer me voluntary work. I think such folk would be happier if I was a wheelchair user, which could very well happen, as I am sure my walking fills then with dread that I am going to fall; which can happen. I live independently with one cat, and four goldfish. No formal support network, so I cannot be all that bad. I am now struggling. Errr. I like all sports, the gym and current affairs. Quite shy, initially. My

biggest failing, apparently, is I don't accept nonsense from anyone. And I mean anyone. I don't swear, but I do have a repertoire of well-rehearsed put downs. A good judge of character. Sadly, I cannot regale you with stories of being intrepid - climbing mountains or sailing round the world. I have not even been on Victoria Park Lake! Anthony Hall

Town Managers

Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving

on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town

manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club ’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation.

2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

Match Report Tuesday 16th September 2014 St Helens Town 0-1 Runcorn Linnets

Following the 9-0 humiliation by AFC Liverpool three days earlier, Town fans feared the worst as the team prepared to face unbeaten NWC Premier Division leaders and promotion favourites Runcorn Linnets at Brocstedes Park on

Tuesday. However, their fears were unwarranted, as Town went a long way to restoring their pride, passion and self-belief. Although the game was lost, by a single goal, the St. Helens players matched their illustrious opponents throughout and were perhaps unlucky not to share the spoils. Before their biggest crowd since the Knowsley Road days, Town found themselves up against it from the outset. Once again missing the influential Karl Bergqvist due to injury, the home defence was bolstered by new signings Ryan Duffy from Rylands in the Warrington League and Gareth Grant from Runcorn Town and neither let the side down. Paul Cook-Hannah returned up front and had a fine game against the big Linnets centre backs. James Rushton-Woods returned to his best form and Marcus Perry and Andy Gillespie provided plenty of pace down the wings. Falconer was commanding in the heart of the defence and Rory Crowther put last Saturday’s nightmare behind him and comfortably dealt with all Runcorn could throw at him, with the sole exception of the winning goal,

which had an element of good fortune about it. Having weathered the first twenty minutes, Town began to put together some moves of their own, but were hampered by the award of an inordinate flow of free-kicks, many of which appeared unwarranted. The first yellow card, however, was administered to Michael Burke for a wild lunge on Cook-Hannah as Town threatened to break the visitors’ tight defensive line. Andy Gillespie had a few half chances, as did Rushton-Woods, but the best chance of the half fell to Linnets’ striker Adam Wade, who fired wide of Crowther’s right post, with the goal seemingly at his mercy. St. Helens took the game to the visitors in the second half, but after barely five minutes, a hopeful hoof upfield bounced unkindly for the home defence, just eluding Falconer’s leap, finding Mark Haughton, who steered the ball just out of Crowther’s reach into the net. The goal was scarcely deserved, coming against the run of play, but Town did not surrender on this occasion. Shortly afterwards, Cook-Hannah headed on for Rushton-Woods to hit a fierce shot, but Runcorn keeper Richard Mottram was well positioned to deny him. Then Andy Gillespie broke up the left and, turning inside, shot for goal, resulting in another good save from Mottram. St. Helens continued to exert

pressure and Rushton-Woods was felled by a stray elbow and Mottram did well to turn the same player’s free-kick over his crossbar. Gillespie again ran inside, taking on three defenders on a diagonal burst, before unleashing a drive, but Mottram again denied him. With 20 minutes left, Chad Whyte replaced Cook-Hannah, but he too found Mottram in good form as he held his initial shot. At the other end, Kevin Towey and earlier scorer Haughton wasted good chances, but Town had a late opportunity to equalise, when Whyte beat Mottram from a tight angle, but his lob went agonisingly over the bar.

A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase

winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

of St Helens Town AFC

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

Town out of luck at Bootle Bootle 3-0 St Helens Town Tuesday 23r September 2014 St. Helens Town played much better on Tuesday than they did at Winsford, but still came away on the back of another 3-0 defeat.

However, this was a completely different game: they played much more football than their hosts, but were out of luck with regard to both their attacking play and the opening goal they conceded and on a different night, the final score might have better reflected their contribution to an open game. The first half was played in incessant rain, which made the surface very fast. Both teams had difficulty setting up attacks, but Bootle were fortunate to go ahead on 26 minutes when a shot at goal ricocheted off another home team player and found centre forward Tom Peterson in space and he had

the simple task of beating Rory Crowther from close range. A few minutes later, Steve Williams let fly from 35 yards and Crowther pulled off a great save, pushing the ball round his near post. Town roared back after 35 minutes and Andy Gillespie carved out an opening and laid on a low cross which eluded Chad Whyte’s lunge by a matter of inches with the open goal beckoning. Five minutes from the break, Peterson scored a second, taking full advantage of a defensive mistake, netting from the edge of the penalty area for a fine opportunist’s goal. Town had by far the lion’s share of possession in the second half and although starting two goals down, they enjoyed long periods of possession, with Bootle left to try to seize on a limited number of breaks. The visitors had a number of half-chances which amounted to nothing, but they went closer and closer as the half wore on. Crowther was called into action to deal with two good shots from

Bootle in the 54th & 70th mins, but his luck ran out five minutes later when, after parrying a fierce drive, could only watch as the ball trickled out to Williams who tapped in for the third goal. St. Helens had a virtual monopoly on possession and scoring opportunities in the last 15 minutes as they attempted to salvage something from an encouraging performance. However, they were thwarted by a whole series of deflections and goalline clearances. On 78 minutes, Gillespie beat the keeper to the ball ten yards away from his near post, but his shot from the tightest of angles rolled across the empty goal inches away from a score, then substitute Karl Bergqvist set up Chris Cottington, but keeper Richie Cowderoy, playing against his old team, tipped his shot around the upright. With only a few minutes remaining, Hamish Falconer’s header was just kept out and from James Rushton-Woods’ corner, Aaron Morris’s downward header bounced off the turf and over the bar. There was just enough time for a Falconer shot to be back-heeled over the crossbar by a fortunate defender who knew little about it. Though Bootle held out for a deserved victory, St. Helens Town can count themselves very unlucky not to have got a goal or two back late on, as a reward for their industry on a foul night at the Delta Taxis Stadium. They next face West Didsbury & Chorlton at Brocstedes Park on Saturday, a side they beat twice last season and who have themselves had a difficult start to this season.

Match Report Town lose 3-0 at Winsford United Saturday 20th September 2014

Saturday’s trip to Winsford gave Town an opportunity to return to winning ways, against a side just below them in the NW Counties Premier Division table, but had to take the field without several regulars up front, including Karl Bergqvist, Chad Whyte and the unfortunate Alex Gillespie –

Andy’s younger brother – who broke his leg the day before. However, the midfield was strengthened by the return of Cole Ashton, who has re-joined the club after an unhappy twelve-month spell with Runcorn Linnets, which was blighted by a broken ankle sustained in the

opening minutes of his Linnets’ debut. Town had a chance to score in the opening minutes, a mistake by full-back Alex Byrne giving Andy Gillespie an opportunity to turn on the edge of the box but, just as he prepared to pull the trigger, he was hacked down by centre-half Jamie Walker, who amazingly escaped punishment. Soon afterwards, Jack McKay had a shooting chance from 20 yards but fired wide. That was as good as it got for Town, as their attacking play failed to produce any effort of note in a dreary first half and the home side gradually began to get on top. Two minutes before half-time, Winsford took the lead, Danny McDonnell scoring from a failed clearance. Soon after the resumption, Aaron Morris broke down the left and beat Byrne easily, but his

cross was luckily knocked away by McDonnell and gathered by keeper Andy Jones. Town’s only clear chance of the second half was a shot from 25 yards from Marcus Perry, which was saved comfortably by Jones on 64 minutes. The second half was another forgettable contest, with defences on top. Rory Crowther had easily his best game yet between the sticks and Morris, Hamish Falconer and Gareth Grant were solid at the back. Paul Cook-Hannah tried hard throughout and won several aerial battles, but with nobody feeding off him, was wasted up front. Winsford launched an offensive midway through the second period and were awarded a penalty against Falconer, who was deemed to have handled the ball, but it all seemed rather harsh, as he tried to block the fierce shot at point-blank range. However, Crowther pulled off a marvellous save and, although the ball ended up in the net, the goal was disallowed as the keeper was fouled in trying to block the shot from the rebound. Crowther produced another three top-drawer saves as Winsford turned up the pressure and, with ten minutes left, a well-hit drive bounced off the under-side of Crowther’s bar into his grateful hands. As time wore on and Town tried desperately to rescue a point, Winsford broke twice in the last five minutes to score late goals through Harry Noon and Danny Egan, to wrap up a 3-0 win for the Cheshire side, which enabled them to swap places with St. Helens in the table. Following Town’s game at home to West Didsbury & Chorlton, they open their Liverpool Senior Cup campaign with a trip to Burscough on Tuesday in a First Round tie, before returning to FA Vase action against Nostell Miners Welfare on Sunday, 5th October. Widnes, who won 1-0 at Barnton on Saturday, will provide the opposition for St. Helens in the Second Round of the Men United Cup (formerly the NW Counties League Cup) on 25th October, the game taking place at the former Naughton Park.
