District Superintendent’s Report
Les Phillips
This is my first report to the 17 District Assembly of the Gauteng District. th
Dr Toler, Dr Chambo, Rev Elliott, delegates, and friends I greet you all in the name
of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. It is a privilege to present this report. This
report however is not my report but it is our report. A report of what God is
doing in and through the churches that forms part of the Gauteng District. Tribute must be paid to the man and woman that labour unselfishly in the
Masters service I need to remind you our labour in the Lord is not in vain.
If we look around us to a fallen world we will agree that this world is broken. Fences and walls are indicative of the separation experienced by the world. Separation from God and separation from one another. In a divided world and
in a world that have lost its way we witness the resultant brokenness and we
are filled with sadness. When however this brokenness is seen within the
Church, it is tragic and it is an affront to the grace of God. There are many good
things happening across the district. However, I had on more than one occasion
work through the pain of brokenness within congregations.
“Years ago the great evangelist Dwight L. Moody preached a sermon in which he
noted that Christians in his day wanted influence. Instead, Moody said, what
they need is power, the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the power that we need
to tear down the walls, freeing us to embrace each other once again.”
Influence is important for we are indeed the light of the world, but more
importantly we need the power of the Holy Spirit to transform us into
Christlikeness that makes us sing not I want my way to be God’s way but
rather I want God’s way to be my way as I journey here below
The call for unity
Jesus prays in John 17:11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still
in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of
your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one
Unity is the prayer of our Saviour. He prays that the Father would make us one.
Unity is not the result of our human endeavour but rather it is a gift from God.
This unity is not uniformity or mere tolerance it is a unity which is brought about
by the Father.
14 | P a g e
As we individually and collectively submit ourselves to the Father,
He enables us to touch the untouchable and love the unlovable. He unites us, irrespective
our race, our colour or our social standing. It is necessary for Christians to enjoy the
richness of relationships among one another. Without unity Christians cannot enjoy one
another. We will not have the mutual ministry to one another that each of us needs
for life to be rich and satisfying.
This unity is a unity that will serve as a testimony to the world,………….that the world may believe that you have sent me John 17:21
When we get into complete unity then the world will not only believe but will
know that the Father has send the Son. John 17: 23— so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world
will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me
Unity therefore is vital in our witness of God in the world Unity is beneficial to us. The Psalmist says in Psalm 133
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down the beard, running down on Aron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe 3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. Unity among believers pleases God. It is good and pleasant for brothers to dwell together in unity!
.
.
15 | P a g e
1 Corinthians 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and
that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind
and thought .
A united church is unified in purpose. A united church leads to the building of
bridges and refuse to build walls that will lead to isolation.
1 Philippians 2:1-2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united
with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if
any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like- 2
minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
Unity ought to be a distinctive mark among Christians. In spite of our
differences that God would unite us and make us one. A oneness that is a
source of joy. Unity is not uniformity, but lifestyle love. A unity where our
spiritual gifts are for the good of the body, not individual honor.
Different-shaped hills makes up the unity of Jerusalem. Different-coloured
flowers make up the unity of the garden. In variety lies charm; and variety is not
only consistent with unity, it is a condition of unity, if the unity is to go deeper
than mere appearances “
Our challenge is to move from
Individuality
team work
Comfort zone
embracing new possibilities
Repeating the past
creating a bright new tomorrow
Sameness
To embracing our diversity

Where are we now
In spite of our different situations across the churches on this district, God is
showing Himself faithful.

Our growth over the past years has been just under 4%. The potential of growth
is great and we trust the Lord that collectively our growth would be in double
digits the coming year.
We have organised Tsakane 2, Johanneburg Central and the South Family
church. We praise the Lord for this. The God that has started a good work is
able to complete it.
Reiger Park have completed their church project and dedicated the church. Nehemiah Ministries secured a property and started worshipping in their new
acquired building. We praise the Lord for this.

God is revealing His faithfulness in building projects across the Gauteng District. We wait with great excitement that this year a few more buildings will be
dedicated to the Lord.
Challenges remain in the relationships between pastors and church boards. This
relationship must be strengthened, so that we can dedicate our energies to
building His kingdom.
We need to improve in the area of governance and put in place robust
processes that will safeguard the future of the church.
We must ensure greater collaboration between churches, so that we embrace
best practices and continuously lift the bar in a manner that would bring glory
to our heavenly Father.
Focus for the new year
As we move forward as a united body let us be intentional in what we do:
Intentional strategic planning
Ensuring that all churches have a plan that will capture their aspirations and
goals. Where churches need assistance in facilitating this process we would
assist one another in achieving this goal.
Intentional in leadership development
The quality of our leadership will determine the future of the church on this
district. We need to grow as leaders and become passionate about our mission
of making Christlike disciples. We will support and facilitate the opportunity for
growing leaders.
Intentional in growing the church
Growing churches are praying churches. Intentional growth demands that we
know what makes our communities tick. In understanding our environment we
prayerfully consider our approach. One size does not fit all. We remain
18 | P a g e
sensitive to their needs. We identify the needs and by God’s grace respond to it
in a way that would draw them closer to Christ.
Intentional in charting out a clear understanding of our theological identity
If we do not stand for something we will fall for anything. We need to
understand what we believe, why we believe and what the impact our belief on
our lifestyles is. In interviewing candidates for ministry and in discussions with
colleagues it has become clear that the need for understanding our heritage has
become critical. Holiness unto the Lord is our watchword and song. We will
ensure that opportunities for growth in this area is created.
The above would be achieved by churches supporting each other. Strong
churches planting churches and churches that need assistance being provided
with the support and assistance to achieve their goals.
We will strengthen the District Office to become a resource centre and support
to our pastors and churches. To this end we will be establishing a district centre
that will serve as an anchor for, inter alia, youth development, child
development, governance and church growth. It is with great joy to announce
that we will be moving the District Office to the old Nazarene Bible College in
Florida. We will be taking up ownership of the building on 01 February 2012. Thank you, Dr Chambo and the Regional office for donating this building to us, the Gauteng District.
I am humbled that I am privileged to be surrounded by the quality of leadership
within the church. To the advisory board, thank you for your support and for the
robust discussions and valuable input without which I would have been poorer. The various district boards and zone leaders for your contributions and hard
work that you have put in this year.
Thank you, Joycelyn for your support and above all thank you to our Heavenly
Father that has been faithful in showing himself strong in every situation. United we stand, divided we fall………… Father make us one
Respectfully submitted

Report of the SDMI leader of the Gauteng District
To our District Superintendent, Rev Les Philip, Zone leaders and delegates of the Convention.
I greet you in the Name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. The Lord is my Savior, I love the Lord and I am His servant. He guides my footsteps, He teaches me and His Holy Spirit lives in me. This is with great pleasure that I present my 3rd annual report as District SDMI leader. The SDMI board members became the inner circle of this wonderful ministry. Each and every one of them are truly a child of God, it is a pleasure to work with them, because they love this ministry, they are committed to this position and respected amongst people, they are humble and they all have a joyful spirit. Thank you Rev Peter Naidoo, Rev Pieter Joubert, Mimi Schoeman, Nellie Tshabalala, Thoko Dlamini and our District Quiz master, Elaine Hamilton. Thank you for your endurance, hard work, beautiful emails/sms’s, prayers and friendship. I want to thank Mark Schoeman and Rev Piet Tshabalala who attend all our meetings with their wife’s. It is with sadness that our committee has to say goodbye to Rev Pieter Joubert, the zone leader of the Eastern zone. We want to thank him for his contribution towards the SDMI the past 3 years. May the Lord guide you each step of your way. We also welcome Tebogo Mokebe as the new zone leader for the Eastern zone. I have read this remark on “why do we need Sunday school” and it is worth to share it with you. “Sunday school is the nursery of our church. It needs the essential training and care to confirm them in Christ. We can summarize the effectiveness of Sunday school in three words, KNOW, GROW and GLOW! Knowing what, Growing with whom and Glowing where.”
• The children have to KNOW and understand in Sunday school that God is Almighty and the creator of all things.
• What about GROWING? We are making an appointment with a doctor about a child’s physical growth, but what about making an appointment with Jesus Christ for their spiritual growth?
• What about GLOWING? The meaning of the word glow is to shine. Moses instructed Aaron to set seven lamps in the Tabernacle so the light can show “Outward”. We are the Temples of Gods Spirit, and that means we have to shine as a light in the dark world. “Let your light shine before men, that they see your good works and glorify your father.”

NMI REPORT
Dear Dr Chambo, Rev Philips, delegates and friends,
I greet you in the precious Name of our Master, Provider and Partner in this great ministry
of World Evangelism.
Worldwide we just celebrated the event of Christ’s incarnation. What a joyous and festive
occasion it is, and should be! But friends, now it’s time we get on with WHY God came to
this planet! Because if we don’t, we’re missing the whole point of His coming.
When the song of the angels is stilled. When the star in the sky is gone. When the kings
and princess are home. When the shepherds are back with their flocks. Then the real
work of Christ’s birth begins:
- To find the lost
- To heal the broken in spirit
- To feed the hungry
- To release the oppressed
- To rebuild the nations
- To bring peace among all people
- And to radiate the light of Christ - every day, in every way, in all we do and in
all we say.
So easily we get sidetracked and get busy with “good things”, which is not necessarily
the most important things – the things that God specifically called us to!
He came to this planet, He died on a cross, He send us His Holy Spirit, He saved us, He
sanctified us, He filled us with His Holy Spirit, He called us, He empowered us with gifts
– in order to win souls!
What a tragedy that research shows that, for the modern church, it takes 600 people to win
one soul for Christ, per year! Is it a matter of the Blood losing it’s power? Or might it be
that we’re keeping ourselves busy with good things, instead of the most important things!
23 | P a g e
It is with this in mind, that Gauteng NMI continue to build on the foundation that was laid
the previous year. Our slogan for the year 2012 is: “PSST!”.
P – Pray. "God does nothing except in response to believing prayer." John Wesley. We
want our NMI Presidents, with the support of the pastors, to really mobilize our churches
to pray.
S – Support. In whatever way we can, let’s support our global mission program. Starting
in Jerusalem, but not forgetting the uttermost parts of the world. Purposefully working
towards paying our WEF Budgets, supporting other NMI offerings, loving our L.I.N.K.S.
–families, and getting the Global Nazarene News to our churchfolk, is of utmost
importance!
S – Souls. That is why we do what we do. To win souls for the Kingdom! Our prayers, our
efforts, our finances, our focus, our reports should be geared towards this goal.
We therefore celebrate and commend the Church of the Nazarene with 157,000 new
Nazarenes and and planting 1,100 new churches in the past year.
From the District NMI Team, we will continue to support and empower you in the
following ways:
• Weekly Facebook updates with missions news and information
• Monthly sms’s to encourage, inform and give direction
• Quarterly meetings with NMI Zone Leaders, alongside the Pastor’s Zonal Meetings.
• Bi-annual Gauteng District NMI Newsletter with information to be shared with local
churches.
• Bi-annual NMI Rallies, in co-operation with SDMI and NMI. (Our next Rally is on
Saturday 5 May at Boksburg Church of the Nazarene. Plan to be there!)
24 | P a g e
We still urge local churches to subscribe to the weekly email newsletter from Nazarene
Communications Network, the monthly Engage Magazine, the Regional Newsletter and
Nazarene Prayer Mobilization Line. All of these are free, and highly informative.
I am in correspondence with Rev Lovemore Chikova, for a Work & Witness Team to
Botswana. A second Work & Witness Team under the leadership of Rev Andre Nel, will
also take place to Mozambique. More information will be forthcoming.
I remind the Local NMI President’s that it is their duty to mobilize your local churches for
missions through 1) prayer 2) education 3) giving and 4) interactive experiences.
Friends, every day thousands of people fall into the pit of hell. Lost and without hope.
Every day, 460 people are martyred for their faith in Jesus Christ.
We are a saved people. We are sanctified people. We are a sent people. Let’s get down to
it, and do the most important things.
Together in this,
Rev Dawie de Koker
District NMI President
“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." – Isaiah 6:8

NYI
Dear General Superintendent, Rev. Les Phillips and members of the District
Assembly
Heraclitus once said “It is in change that things get meaning.” From the NYI desk, I
believe this is true when I look back over 2011. In the year that has passed we as the
NYI leadership started to introduce small changes, that we believe will have a big
impact on our district. One of the big changes on our district was the election of our
new District Superintendent, Rev. Les Phillips, and as soon as he took office (by
storm I may add), we initiated discussions on how we could make the NYI more
effective, relevant and functional to move towards our common goal of helping our
local churches to “make Christlike Disciples of all the nations” in the coming years.
With a dedicated team we held an Indaba at Eldorado Park church and as a result of
our meeting (and hard work from youth all over our district) we created a body
called “Extreme Life” which will serve as an instrument to help train, equip and
empower local churches to reach our lost youth. We are very excited about this new
movement on our district which is under the leadership of Lloyd Solomons
(current Roodepoort Zone leader).
I have always believed that the District is at it`s best when the zones and local
churches are at their best, and I can honestly report that our zones (and thus local
churches) have been very busy and effective in their efforts to reach youth. We`ve
had a number of youth camps, youth outreaches, Evangelistic youth crusades and so
many ministry opportunities, that changed and impacted the lives of thousands of
youth throughout the District and different zones in 2011. This could only happen
through the hands and feet and efforts of ordinary young men and ladies who made
a choice to say “yes” to the calling of Christ and by pouring their lives into His
Great Commandment (Love God with all of your heart, soul and mind and your
neighbour as yourself) and the Great Commision (Go and make disciples of all the
nations) with the enabling, empowering dunamis power of God’s Holy Spirit!

Another highlight this passed year, was our annual NYI, NMI and SDMI
conventions held at Cornerstone church in Florida, which was a tremendous
success. My two year term (as well as those of the zone leaders) had passed, and we
also had our NYI elections whereby I was elected as NYI-District President for
another term. I would also like to congratulate our new Zone leaders and welcome
them to the NYI team. In the words of John C. Maxwell: “Leadership is action, and
not position”, so I challenge every youth-leader, Pastor, Zone leader and those
passionate about youth, to take hands with the Gauteng NYI in 2012 and to take
action to reach, impact and transform the lifes of the youth in our communities .

Gauteng District Ministerial Board of Studies Annual Report
Venue: Good News Convention Centre
Date: 28/01/2012
Dr. Filimao Chambo, Rev. Collin Elliot, Rev. Les Phillips, Pastors Delegates and Guests;
greetings in the matchless name of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the day that the Lord has
made, let us rejoice and be glad.
We had a joint meeting of the two boards Ministerial Board of Studies and Ministerial
Board of Credentials met once this year. Not much was done by the board except to
implement the tasks it has attained in 2010, which is a Proforma for all Ministerial
candidates.
The respective boards entered into a partnership to help candidates address the question of
ordination without delay by following a structured guiding tool for both the pastor and
candidate.
Extension Centres:
The District has three extension centres; East Rand, Vanderbijlpark, and West Rand. West
Rand is not running due to not having a location. The Ministerial Board along with the
Advisory will work together in finding a location to hold our classes at.

– to preach on answering a cal to full-time service
Establish a District Evangelistic Team of people that have a heart to assist any church in a
campaign, visitation or whatever form of evangelistic outreach – including a youth
component such as an Impact Team
Encourage healthy churches to plant a church and/or come alongside struggling churches
to assist in any way.
The creation of forums of sharing best practices
It is noted that Dr Willem Harding left a broken generator, a Jesus Film screen with poles, and 2 speakers with Amos Madonsela. He left for Mexico and is not available to serve. Respectfully submitted, Betty Van Den Bergh

3. Enrollment
Our prayer in this area echoes one of our Lord’s recorded prayer request
captured in Matthew 9:37-38 “Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is
plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore,
to send out workers into His harvest field ”. We have a list of 83 names of
people who responded to the call during some of our recruitment drives during
different district and churches events. Let us pray that they will take the
necessary steps to be equipped for service.
3.1 Residential students = 21 - (2 drop outs and 1 transfer) = 17 students.
3.2 Satellite Centers = 95 Diploma + 55 MET = 150.
3.3 Bth. Distance Students = 45 (Total = 212)
3.4 Number of Satellite Centers = 13
3.5 We started a year with 3 students from your district but 1 dropped out.
4. Graduation
We held our graduation on the 12 March 2011, Rev Mark Louw (REC) was
our keynote speaker. Altogether thirty four (34) students graduated; five
(5) with a certificate in ministry, twenty eight (28) with a diploma in
theology; and one (01) with the Bachelor of Theology; the first graduate
from our distance diploma.
5. Blessings
5.1 Women Extravaganza for a donation of R 17,096.60, the money has been
used for the tarring of the road from the gate to the parking place.
5.2 The Highveld District, Divine Hope Church of the Nazarene (Western),

35 | P a g e
6. Challenges
6.1 Enrollment
We continue to have a very low number of enrolled students in all our
programmes especially the residential programme which makes running the
College very difficult.
6.2 Exchange Rate
The Rand continues gaining a stronger position against a dollar, which has
resulted in our monthly allocation to drop in value.
6.3 The Impact of the Recession
6.3.1 Average 80% drop on the projected interest available from the ANSI
bursaries. (NTC investments kept in the USA) drastic dropping of interest.
6.3.2 The General Church implementing a 20% cut on all World Mission
Institutions because of the difficult state of financial affairs as a result of
the recession.
7. District Education Budgets
I want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the churches and districts
that continue to support the College with their budgets. The local churches
from both the North-East and the Western districts have been paying their
budgets direct to the College account, and some of them making monthly
contributions and that helps. The diagram below demonstrates the
support received from the different districts. We try to send monthly
updates to district superintendents, to provide an opportunity for
corrections in case some money was paid and we did not record. We depend
partly on this money to be able to run the college. Even for us to be able to
attend the district assemblies we rely on these monies.
