Lenten Parish Mission During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, this year’s Lenten Parish Mission is aimed at leading the faithful to a life-changing encounter with Jesus who brings us His Father's Mercy. This Lenten Parish Mission will begin on the Second Sunday of Lent, which is the 21st of February, 2016. The mission preacher, Fr. Roch Ciandella OFM who is a Franciscan priest coming from Mount Alvernia Retreat Center in Wappinger Falls, NY. He will preach about the Lenten Parish Mission at all the Masses on Sunday February 21st. Then, the Parish Mission is going to take place in the evening at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday (21th of February, Monday (22nd of February), and Tuesday (23rd of February). Everyone is welcome to attend! A Parish Mission is special time in a parish when its community gathers together to gain further insight into a faith filled life. It is a time for each parishioner to renew one’s personal relationship with Jesus and to experience peace and healing. It is also a time to revitalize the Parish in its mission and to be sustained as a community by the love of Jesus. And so, it is a grace-filled opportunity for the parishioners to experience a spiritual renewal in their faith journey through the Eucharist, prayer services, and preaching. It is also good to know how the Parish Missions came to be. They began in the eighteenth century. St. Alphonsus de Liguori, the founder of the Redemptorist Order, made significant contributions to the development of parish missions. Some years later, the Redemptorists brought parish missions to America. A parish mission is a preaching event, which is centered on the Word of God and Catholic teachings on consecutive evenings. The preaching usually emphasizes a deepening of our personal relationship with God, our sense of belonging to the parish community, and our awareness of a greater service of one another in Christ. Just like a retreat, a parish mission calls us to take some time to look into our inner lives, to strengthen our relationship with God, and to experience divine healing. The word, “retreat” offers “a period of time to step back from the course of our daily lives and to go back to God with a renewed heart.” Spiritual retreats have a long history of providing a positive effect on stressful issues of everyday life and disturbed emotions. Although vast crowds came to hear the preaching of Jesus and to experience healing of their diseases, He often withdrew and retreated to a remote spot like the desert or wilderness for prayer and reflection. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert not primarily to be tempted. Rather, He was led to experience a prayerful communion with His heavenly Father and to prepare for the next phase in His ministry. Also, He was able to find time to pray for the people who came to Him for comfort and consolation. The desert had a strong attraction for the people of Israel. They had been closed to God when they had wandered through the desert during the Exodus. They had encountered God in the desert around Mt. Sinai, where God had given them their revered Torah. Sometime, as we live in this rapidly changing society, we can live with divided selves due to stress, tensions, and demands. When our selves are divided, we may live with fearful thoughts, confusing feelings, imaginary anxious thoughts about the future, and so on. Then, as a result, we may find ourselves stressed out, which is a state that can create a chronic state of anxiety and a sense of ‘something is always missing in life.’ In order to find relief and healing from these stressful feelings, we need to step back from our worldly activities and then simply be with God as we are. In this way, a Parish Mission can be a great means to experience the healing and the comforting presence of God. We hope that through this Lenten Parish Mission, some of us may experience healing and reconciliation in some areas of our lives. Spiritual healing, especially the healing of forgiveness reconciliation, can be the greatest healing that we can ever experience as a community. A good will offering will be collected each evening, but there is no set cost to attend. Please, make use of this opportunity to enrich your journey of faith through Christ.

Fr. Niranjan Rodrigo, Ph.D.

Lenten Parish Mission 2016

Infant Saviour Church on Feb. 21-22-23 -- 7PM to 8:30PM.

Preached by Franciscan Priest Roch Ciandella, OFM

Member of Mt. Alvernia, Wappingers Falls.

Sermon Topic: Mercy, The Heart of the Gospel All Are Welcome!

The Duck and the Devil: There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm. He was given a slingshot to play with out in the

woods. He practiced in the woods, but he could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for dinner. As he was walking back he saw Grandma’s pet duck. Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly, hit the duck square in the head and killed it. He was shocked and grieved! In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile; only to see his sister watching; Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing. After lunch the next day Grandma said , “Sally, let’s wash the dishes” but Sally said Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.” Then she whispered to him “Remember the duck.? so Johnny did the dishes. Later that day, Grandpa asked the children if the children wanted to go fishing and Grandma said, “I’m sorry but I need Sally to help make supper” Sally just smiled and said , “Well that’s all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help.” she whispered again, Remember the duck? So sally went fishing and Johnny stayed to help. After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally’s; he finally couldn’t stand it any longer. He went to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck. Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, Sweetheart, I know. You see , I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing, but because I love you I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make

a slave of you” “Thought for Lent and everyday thereafter” Whatever is in your past, whatever you have done...and the devil keeps throwing it up in your face (lying, cheating ,debt. fear, bad habits, hatred, anger, bitterness,(etc.) ...whatever it is...you need to know that God was standing at the window and He saw the whole thing. He has seen your whole life. He wants you to know the He loves you and that you are forgiven. He’s wondering how long you will let the devil make a slave of you. The great thing about God is that when you ask for forgiveness: He not only forgives you , He forgets it. It is by God’s grace and mercy we are saved. Always

remember that God is always at the window and when Jesus died on the cross; He was thinking of you!
