CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX
FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN:
Our Lord uses strong words in the gospel today, words which, at first, seem so very strange, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it
off. If your feet or eyes cause you to sin, get rid of them.” Why is Our Lord speaking in this way? The first thing to understand is what
Our Lord is not saying. He is not saying that we should literally harm ourselves. Respect for the body which God has given us is
something that is expected from every person. The Lord certainly does not want us to harm our bodies. But then what is He telling us?
The answer is simple: the Lord wants us to remove from our hearts, from our minds, from our lives, anything that leads us to sin. Even
more He wants us to remove anything that stands in our way of following Him. It is as simple, but as important, as that. We must not
allow anyone or anything to stand in our way of coming closer to Jesus Our Lord.
In the next few days we honor two saints who certainly knew what Our Lord is talking about in the gospel today. They are saints
who are very popular among Catholic people, saints who teach us so much about following the Lord Jesus. The first one is our own holy
patroness, St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus (officially called by her French name St. Therese of Lisieux), called by the Pope the greatest
saint of modern times. Her years on this earth were only twenty-four in number. Her life, as far as the world was concerned, was very
uneventful. But her closeness to Jesus has inspired the world. She led a quiet childhood, experienced the loss of her mother when she
was four, then the mental illness of her beloved father. At the age of fifteen she entered the Carmelite convent at Lisieux near her home.
She never left that convent until her death just a few years later. We would probably never have known about her if her religious
superior (who was also her sister) had not instructed her to write down her reflections, which were published after her death in the book
called The Story of A Soul. In that book, Theresa describes what she calls her “Little Way” of holiness, namely to find God in the daily
things we do. To use the image of today’s gospel, she wanted to remove from her heart anything that got in the way of her loving Jesus
more and more. She wrote a beautiful sentence which we should all try to imitate. She wrote this, “I want to love Jesus more than
anyone has ever loved Him before.” Should that not be the aim of every Christian’s life?
And the second saint we honor next Sunday, October 4th has been called the greatest Christian since Christ Himself. His name is
Francis of Assisi, one of the most beloved saints of the Church. As a young man from a well-to-do family, he lived a carefree life, not a
bad life, but not a life either which he felt was meaningful and important. One day he heard the voice of Jesus speaking from the crucifix, “Francis, build up my church for it is falling into ruins.” Francis thought the Lord was asking him to rebuild a little chapel, the
Chapel of San Damiano, near his home. So he took brick and mortar to repair that church. When he was finished, he thought his work
was done, only to hear the voice of Jesus speaking to him again in the same words as before. “Francis, build up my Church for it is
falling into ruins.” And in that instant Francis realized that the Lord was inviting him to change his life, to give up everything, and to
build up the Church by the quality of his life. And so he went before the bishop and literally did what the gospel says today, he gave up
everything, even the clothes he wore, to follow the Lord Jesus. And indeed Francis did rebuild the Church and rebuilt the world. He called people to a simple life, a life of love of God and neighbor, a life of respecting God’s Creation, a life of peace among people and
among nations. He invited the world to be “the instruments of God’s peace.”
What wonderful saints are Theresa and Francis! How much we can learn from them! We are not called to live in a convent like St.
Theresa. We are not called to literally give up what we have like St. Francis. But we are called to get rid of anything and everything that
separates us from following Jesus and loving Him. May St. Theresa and St. Francis be our helpers from heaven. May we keep them in
mind as we try to follow Jesus more and more each day. With St. Francis, may we be the instruments of God’s peace. And, with St. Theresa; every day may we try to love Jesus more than He has ever been loved before.

COLUMBUS DAY PARADE
Dear Friends:
I encourage you to come to the Morris Park Columbus Day Parade which will take place on Sunday, October 11th beginning at
12:00PM.
We are especially honored this year that our principal, Mrs. Josephine Fanelli, will be the Honorary Grand Marshal of the parade.
This is in recognition of her being principal of St. Theresa’s School, a life-long member of our community, and the president of the
Forum of Italian American Educators. This is a fitting honor for Mrs. Fanelli who has done so much not only for our school, but our
community. Congratulations, Mrs. Fanelli!
Father Thomas B. Derivan
TWENTY SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
One of the most popular saints of the Church, St. Theresa (1873-1897), called “The Little Flower” entered the Carmel of Lisieux at
age 15 and nine years later winged her way to heaven. She took for her motto the well-known words of the great Carmelite mystic, John
of the Cross: “Love is repaid by love alone.” In the following excerpt from her autobiography, we find that it was in reading the epistles
of St. Paul that she discovered for herself the primacy of love.
“Since my longing for martyrdom was powerful and unsettling, I turned to the epistles of St. Paul in the hope of finally finding an
answer. By chance the 12th and 13th chapters of the first epistle to the Corinthians caught my attention, and in the first section I read that
not everyone can be an apostle, prophet or teacher, that the Church is composed of a variety of members, and that the eye cannot be the
hand. Even with such an answer revealed before me, I was not satisfied and did not find peace.
“I persevered in the reading and did not let my mind wander until I found this encouraging theme: ‘Set your desires on the greater
gifts, and I will now show you the way which surpasses all others.’ For the Apostle insists that the greater gifts are nothing at all without
love and that this same love is surely the best path leading directly to God. At length I had found peace of mind.
“Love appeared to me to be the hinge for my vocation. Indeed I knew that the church has a body composed of various members, but
in this body the necessary and more noble member was not lacking; I knew that the Church had a heart and that such a heart appeared to
be aflame with love. I knew that one love drove the members of the Church to action, that if this love were extinguished, the apostles
would have proclaimed the Gospel no longer, the martyrs would have shed their blood no more. I saw and realized that love sets off the
bounds of all vocations, that love is everything, that this same love embraces every time and every place. In one word, that love is everlasting.
“Then, nearly ecstatic with the supreme joy in my soul, I proclaimed: O Jesus, my love, at last I have found my calling: my call is
love. Certainly I have found my proper place in the Church, and you gave me that very place, my God. In the heart of the Church, my
mother, I will be love, and thus I will be all things, as my desire finds its direction.”
ST. THERESA OF THE CHILD JESUS
OCTOBER 1
Triduum of Masses honoring our patroness
St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
September 29, 30, and October 1 (Feast of St. Theresa 7PM)
TRIDUUM IN HONOR OF ST. THERESA:
We will have a triduum (three days) of Masses honoring our holy
patroness, St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus, this week on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday at 7:00PM each evening. We invite all,
particularly families, to come to Mass each evening to celebrate
our love for St. Theresa who has been called “the greatest saint of
modern times.”
A PRAYER TO OBTAIN THE SPIRIT OF
ST. THERESA
O God of merciful love, you have never failed your people in any
age, but have always raised up saints as lamps to their feet on the
road to salvation.
We thank you for the waterfall of grace you poured down on St.
Theresa. Because she really believed the Gospel, she understood
it and you have endowed her with the gift of unfolding its riches
for us in our own day.
For this we thank you most sincerely and we ask for the
perseverance to follow the “Little Way” of holiness that yourself
revealed to her.
Teach us to give up our unrealistic dreams of heroism and settle
down to the task of being ourselves and accepting what we are.
Help us to want your will and nothing else, nothing at all, Lord.
Help us find it in the real world of every day’s here and now.
Convince us that the present moment with its light and its
darkness, its highs and its lows, its joys and its sorrows, is nothing
else than your own dwelling place, your very temple into which
you call us to be loved and to love, to love you and to love our
brothers and sisters, and not least of all, to love our own poor
wonderful selves.
We ask this through your own dear Son, Our Lord Jesus, who
lives and reigns with you in the joyous embrace of the Holy
Spirit, one God for always and forever. Amen

St. Lorenzo Ruiz
(1600-1637)
Memorial: September 28
Lawrence (Lorenzo) Ruiz was born in the Philippines to a
Chinese father and a Filipino mother. Educated by Dominican
friars, he served as an altar boy and sacristan in a church in
Binondo, a Chinese enclave in the city of Manila. He became a
skilled calligrapher and a devoted member of the Confraternity of
the Holy Rosary. A layman, he married and had three children.
In 1636, Lorenzo was accused of murder and sought asylum
among a group of Dominican priests traveling to Japan. Little did
he know of the persecution awaiting Christians there under the
shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Lorenzo and his companions were
soon captured and taken to Nagasaki, where they suffered
unspeakable tortures.
On September 27, 1637, Lorenzo and the priests were taken to
the “Mountain of Marytrs,” where they were hung upside down in
pits. After two days, Lorenzo died.
When he was offered the chance to renounce the faith to save
his life, he responded, “That I will never do, because I am a
Christian, and I shall die for God, and for him I will give many
thousands of lives if I had them.”
Between 1633 and 1637, 16 Christians gave their lives for the
faith in Japan and so earned the martyr’s crown. Though many
came to Japan from the Philippines, Lorenzo was the only native-
born Filipino, and thus has the distinction of being the country’s
first canonized saint and martyr.
Having left his family and homeland, Lorenzo Ruiz reminds
us of Christ’s teaching that “everyone who has given up houses or
brothers or sisters or fathers or mother or children or lands for the
sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will
inherit eternal life” (Mt 19:29).
INCREASED OFFERTORY GIVING CAMPAIGN:
Last weekend we officially began the Increased Offertory Giving
Campaign in our parish. As you know from the announcement I
gave last weekend at Mass, the Archdiocese is conducting an In-
creased Offertory Giving Campaign called “Sharing Our Gifts” to
invite parishioners to increase their weekly Church contribution.
You know the heavy demands of costs that face your own family
and that is true of our “Church Family” as well.. We ask you to
prayerfully consider increasing your weekly offering, if that is
possible. If you wish, you can use Parish Giving for electronic
giving. Information about this is available on our parish website
www.sttheresachurchbronx.org or at the Rectory. We know the
great devotion of our parishioners to our parish. God bless you
for whatever help you can give to St. Theresa’s Parish.
