CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX
FEBRUARY 2, 2014-PRESENTATION OF THE LORD
We Catholics need to rediscover what is called “relational evangelism” - to learn the Lord’s way of winning people back to Him.
Relational evangelism is a deliberate attempt to bring people to Jesus by befriending them. Now as soon as some read this, they might
wonder, “Can that be right? Should we befriend people just to bring them to Jesus”? And of course the answer is: Absolutely!!! The
greatest reason to befriend someone is Jesus Christ. The greatest gift we can give a friend is Jesus Christ. If we are truly someone’s
friend, then we want what is best for him or her. What can be better for any person on earth than to come to Jesus Christ?
It may seem to most of us like it will take an eternity to help some people accept that great gift of Jesus, but, as disciples of Jesus,
we need to be very clear from the beginning that this service demands a lot of our personal time. In relational evangelism, we need to
spend time with people, share our lives with them. It will not be sufficient to just bring them to Church or to a social event at Church.
That is important and that indeed might expose them to the gospel, which is a good way to begin, but to bring a person into a personal
relationship with Jesus, we must invest our time. This can be very difficult - I agree– because we all have full schedules. But by inviting
people into our lives instead of adding a lot more extra time commitments, we can keep our lives in order and still do this type of
relational evangelism.
This can be done by working on our natural contacts like friends and neighbors. We normally have lots of natural opportunities to
talk with them and build good relationships. The same is true of the people at work whom we see on a regular basis. Another good place
for us to build Christ-like relationships is at our children’s or grandchildren’s school or sporting events.
People who are new to our neighborhood or workplace or school are often looking for a sense of belonging. We should use these
natural opportunities to befriend them with the clear purpose of being a example of true Christian caring and bringing them into a deeper
relationship with Jesus.
Once we’ve built that relationship of friendship and care and trust, we should begin to actively convey the good news of the gospel
clearly to them by our words and our conduct of life. Our speech is important in this work as evangelists. To effectively share the
gospel, we must learn how to converse effectively and persuasively. It takes work to learn how to talk about the Lord and His presence
in our daily life naturally and tactfully. The only way we are going to learn and to feel comfortable with it is to just do it.
This alertness to evangelistic opportunities requires that we become good listeners as well as good conversationalists. We want to avoid thinking about what we are going to say nest so much that we don’t hear the other person and come to really understand them.
Relational evangelism demands a spiritual sensitivity that enable us to sense where a person is in the Lord so that we can help them move
on in their faith journey.
Remember, our goal should be to build a relationship that will bring another person to a mature faith in Jesus. We don’t have to
say everything the first time we meet. We need to invest time and real concern for the person. We need to listen first and allow the Lord
to work through us. So please try doing this today with those people the Lord places before you. He needs your help. Will you do it for His people and for Him?
VOCATION PRAYER APOSTOLATE
JOIN THE MISSION
Right from your room
The Vocation Prayer Apostolate is a spiritual army of women and
men-many who are homebound, in hospitals, and in nursing
homes-who offer up their suffering for an increase in priestly
vocations. There is an ancient tradition of offering up suffering to
God, beginning in the Old Testament and culminating with the
sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. You, too, can join thousands of
saints who have offered up their suffering for spiritual gain.
For Priestly Vocations Lord Jesus, You willingly suffered a painful death for the sake of
my salvation. Today I join my pain with Yours-my illness, my
loneliness, my heartache-all for the sake of the souls in purgatory,
and for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. Have pity on
your servant, Lord, for to you I lift up my soul. Amen

ST. THERESA’S CARD PARTY COMMITTEE It Is that time again our Card Party Committee is in the process of getting the Card Party underway for May as they have done in the past years. Almost everyone receives something for Christmas that they don’t want or can’t use...it’s inevitable. We would be happy to take them off your hands. We can use anything that is NEW OR UNUSED such as picture frames, candle sets, wallets etc. Thank you for your consideration and all you do to help make the card party a success! Please remember only NEW
AND UNOPENED ITEMS will be accepted. Please bring your donations to the Rectory.
St. Frances de Chantal Parish in the Bronx will begin a Bereavement Support Group on Thursday evening March 6th
from 7:30 P.M. to 9 P.M. in the parish meeting room. If you are interested in being a part of this group, please contact Sr. Joan Marie O’Leary O.P. at 718-792-5500 Ext.13 by Feb. 28th.
PEASE HELP YOUR PARISH! We are most grateful to all of you who have so generously
increased your weekly Sunday contribution. Please remember
that this weekly increase is most needed for St. Theresa in
building and improving our beloved parish. We are grateful to all
of you whose generous response has enabled us to better meet our
weekly expenses. However we are still far from that goal. Our
neighboring parishes are receiving weekly Sunday contributions
that exceed our weekly Sunday contributions by $2,000 each
week! So we ask that you please continue to help us in order to
keep St. Theresa such a vital, loving, growing parish. If you have
not yet increased your weekly Sunday contribution, please pray
about what more you can give. We really need your weekly help.
CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM-5:00PM
or by appointment in the Rectory.

It should be called the Federal Fresh Start Law: it provides a Government sanctioned forgiveness of debt with no tax ramifications. It takes about 2 years to re-establish your credit after bankruptcy. It’s not part of the problem, it’s part of the solution to raising your credit score. There’s no longer any social stigma when it comes to getting bankruptcy relief. Our
economy is not your fault. Don’t let the Banking Industry scare you away from getting the debt relief you are entitled to under Federal Law. Call for a Free telephone consultation. Admitted to practice in 1982.
