From the Pastor

Dear Parishioners,

As we all know, this coming Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. Hard to believe that the holidays are once again upon us. But, what better way to begin the season than to stop and give thanks to our loving God for all we have. Below is a prayer of blessing for you to use at your Thanksgiving table this year. Please cut it out or just save the bulletin, or make copies and pray this prayer together around the table on Thanksgiving Day. Also, please join us for Mass at 8:00 AM on Thursday morning. What better way to start the day than by giving thanks to God for the gift of His Son!

Prayer of Blessing

God most provident,

we join all creation in raising to you a hymn of thanksgiving through Jesus Christ, your

Son. For generation upon generation

peoples of this land have sung of your bounty: we too offer you raise for the rich harvest

we have received at your hands. Bless us and this food which we share with

grateful hearts. Continue to make our land fruitful and let our love for you be seen

in our pursuit of peace and justice and in our generous response to those in need.

Praise and glory to you, Lord God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sincerely in the Lord,

Fr. Joe

SECOND COLLECTION Next weekend, November 24th and 25th the second collection is for Maintenance and Repairs.

________________________

Why the MAINTENANCE COLLECTION? The monthly MAINTENANCE COLLECTION funds the regular upkeep of St .Mary’s physical plant: school, former convent, rectory, church and grounds. Our buildings are certainly not “new” and we have a responsibility to maintain these resources untrusted to us. Donations to this collection are “restricted” and are not subject to the 14% assessment by the Archdiocese. Thank you for being good caretakers of our spiritual home, St. Mary’s.

ST. MARY PARISH WORSHIPPING SINCE 1911 St. Mary's Closter Fall Wine Tasting: A Smash Success

Close to 50 Closterites and neighbors got a little "Closter" over a splendid array of wines and fine appetizers. Fantastic auction items and happy winners! Everyone had a great time right here at beloved St. Mary's.

Special thanks to The (awesome) Staff of St. Mary for setting up, baking and even bringing wine glasses! Our donors: Ben and Maria Matos, Rudy's Pizzeria and Restaurant, Isabella's Fine Foods, Ma Mei Eatery, Bareburger, Callahan Jewelers, Swan Foot Spa, Nail Studio, Nu Moda Salon, CMX VIP Cinemas, Haworth Apothecary (new parishioners!), The Empty Vase Florist, Gary's Wine and Marketplace. We have great local businesses in Closter, please patronize them!

Stabilizing the Sunday Collection When folks are away due a long weekend, vacations or inclement weather, the collections take a hit. The collection of 11/4 was over $5,100, the collection for 11/11 was approximately $4,000 due to a long weekend which reduced attendance. A fluctuation of $1,000 from week-to-week inhibits bill paying. The parish cannot just "hope" that the funds come in at some point in the future. We cannot run our households in this way, and the parish is no different. St. Mary's needs her collections to stabilize, especially due to the difficult financial outlook for St. Mary's. We are asking parishioners to please make your offering via egiving. This WILL help stabilize the collection as the funds come in no matter the attendance. It costs nothing for you and it reduces printing and mailing of offertory envelopes. PLEASE sign-up today at www.parishgiving.org.

A parishioner prays with the faith community each week at Mass, is involved in an activity or ministry and supports the parish in a meaningful financial manner. Thank you to each parishioner who supports St. Mary's according to the gifts God has first given them. St. Mary's cannot do all that she does without these funds. No money, no mission. Please join your other parishioners who are donating via parishgiving.org.

ST. MARY PARISH WORSHIPPING SINCE 1911 Choir of St. Mary's: New Members & Auto Mechanics Welcome to Janine and Dainy! We need tenors and baritones. Men, let's get it together and start singing with the group. The group is singing some fine choral music and learning how to read music. We had a great Sunday lunch together at La Mesa Restaurant, Bergenfield. Membership has its benefits: service to God and the Church, fellowship, good times and we even have folks who can jump-start your dead car battery after Mass (thanks, Thom!) No singing experience necessary – auto mechanics helpful. Contact Lou Scarpa at [email protected] or just introduce yourself after Mass.

HACKENSACK WALK-IN DINNER ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12TH

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PREPARE FOOD Once again, our Parish will be serving dinner to the homeless and working poor at the Family Promise Shelter in Hackensack on Wednesday, DECEMBER 12TH. We anticipate feeding about 120 people. We are in need of volunteers to prepare various food dishes in their homes and to bring the hot food to the Fr. Roger Troy Hall between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM on December 12th.

Information and sign up sheets are located on easels in the outer vestibules of the church.

For further information, please call Jane Bishop at 201-739-5622. Thank you for your generous support!!

Hospital Privacy Please remember that current privacy laws regarding patients in hospitals do not allow the hospitals/pastoral care offices to contact parishes if their parishioners are in the hospital. If you or a loved one are going into the hospital and want Father to visit you or a loved one, please call the rectory office and let us know.

SUPPORT GROUPS Many who hunger for God’s consolation after the loss of a loved one, separation or divorce or other circumstance will find that faith based programs can offer them hope and comfort. A listing of parish support groups are now available on the Family Life Office webpage. Currently, the Archdiocese of Newark has over 60 different types of support groups ministering to an estimate of 1,200 people each year. The types of groups include: general bereavement, bereaved parents, separated & divorced, single parents & same sex attraction. To find a support group near you, please go to:www.rcan.org/about-parish-based-support-groups-0 and select the group type from the menu on the right. To make updates to our list please contact Lauren Egan at 973-497-4327 or [email protected].
