going to be resurrected?

People often think the Old Testament is boring and full of stories about a mean God, but it is actually invaluable because it actually tells all of the things that happened to Jesus from His birth to His Resurrection. These reflections are called typology, when a person, place, or thing in the Old Testament is made greater in the New, usually in Christ. For example, in Genesis 22, after decades of not being able to have a son, God finally gives Abraham and his wife, Sarah, a son. When Isaac is young, God tells Abraham to take him to the top of a mountain range known as Mori’ah and kill him. Abraham trusts in God’s plan even though it sounds crazy, and he and Isaac make a trip up the mountain. Isaac carries the wood for his own sacrifice on his back, not knowing what is about to happen and asks, “Where is the lamb for the sacrifice?” to which Abraham replies that God will provide the lamb. When they reach the top, an angel comes and stops Abraham from killing Isaac, lauding his faith. Most people thus view the story as an example of Abraham’s deep faith and obedience, which is important, but the true meaning of the story comes from the reflections that it has in the Crucifixion of Jesus. Like Isaac, Jesus too was an only Son and carried the wood for His own execution on His back. He is the Lamb that God provides. However, the parallels become even more profound: the mountain range, Mori’ah, contained a mountain called Calvary – the very place where Jesus was crucified. Thus, God knew 2,000 years before Jesus’ death not only that He would die, but exactly how it would happen. And if God knows all that, then He knows every single thing that happens in our lives, and even though we may not see the beauty of His plan right away (just like the disciples felt despair at Jesus’ death until His Resurrection or Abraham thought God was crazy for asking him to kill his son), we can trust that He too has an epic plan for our lives and all we need to do is trust Him.

EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD– April 16, 2017

SYNOPSIS IN ENGLISH: Above are Easter remarks by Fr. Arthur Rojas to our Spanish-speaking parishioners on Easter Sunday of the Lord’s Resurrection. Along with his greetings, Fr. Rojas reviewed with thanks to God and so many human contributors the several, even historic, advances made by our Hispanic community during Lent and Holy Week, including the first-ever Spanish Mass on Holy Thursday at our parish.

¡ALELUYA! ¡CRISTO HA RESUCITADO!

On Easter morning Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and found it empty. She hurried to get Peter and John. Peter entered first, and when John entered he “saw and believed.”

Choose a date and an Alpha and Omega… color the flame and choose a cross to color. Cut and glue all to the candle.

ThePaschalorEasterCandle

Each year at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, a

new fire is built and blessed. From this fire, a new

Paschal Candle is lit for the first me and will be

used for one year. Candle designs vary, but they

are always white, the largest in the worship space

and contain certain symbols ‐ a cross, the Alpha

and Omega and the date. Let’s design our own

candle by choosing, coloring and gluing on the

designs you like. Do you see the Paschal Candle in

your church?

(1) THE CROSS ‐ Always the central symbol

(2) THE ALPHA AND OMEGA ‐ Tells us God

is the beginning and the end

(3) THE CURRENT YEAR ‐ Says God is with

us here and now

(4) THE FLAME ‐ Reminds us Jesus is the

Light of the World

(5) Use RED to make 5 points on the cross

to represent the 5 wounds of Jesus
