Hello, St. Luke family!
In the past few weeks, I have discussed with you about all kinds of topics, specifically regarding hopeful dreaming.
Using the story of Eli and Samuel, we learned that, if we are to dream, we must first learn how to dream — spending time in silence, listening to God’s voice, knowing how God speaks to us. We then said that after learning how, we must dare to dream. That is, we must be bold and courageous; we must surrender our wills to God’s to truly dream. And we said that then we must learn to join the dream — together as one family of faith, to be a parish family of dreamers.
After this, we said that in order to dream, we must know what we truly long for. What is it deep in my soul that I am hungry for? And, the follow-up question, what is it that stands in the way of satisfying this hunger? What are the obstacles to my dreams?
Then finally, last week, we said that true dreamers are those who commit. If we are to be a people that together dares to dream, we must be willing to make commitments in order to fulfill these dreams. Dreams are not achieved by merely “hoping”; our hope must be turned into action.
So, how have you committed to the Lord? How have you contributed to our parish dreaming by your commitment to God? How have you sought to find your deepest longing?
And now we have arrived at this week’s topic: formation.
In this Lenten season, we make very clear the reality that we are all in need of constant formation. As priests, we attend continuing education days and annual retreats. As teachers, doctors, etc., you are required to receive recertification and ongoing learning. Well, the same is true for us as human beings.
For us to learn and dare to dream, for us to discover our deepest longing, we must humble ourselves and admit our own need for formation.
Imagine the future of our parish family if we realized that, whether I am 2 or 102, I still have so much to learn; I still am in such great need of being molded by the Lord. My question then for you today is: What active steps have you taken to aid you being formed? Or, better yet, how can I as your pastor help you to become who you truly are? (Please let me know!)
Know of my prayers in these holy days of Lent, and may they indeed make you holy.
To Jesus through Mary,In union with St. Joseph,Your pastor,

THE YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST
The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers
Excerpt. Monsignor William P. Fay,General Secretary, USCCB https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/or-der-of-mass/liturgy-of-the-eucharist/the-real-presence-faqs
When the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, why do they still look and taste like bread and wine?
In the celebration of the Eucharist, the glorified Christ becomes present under the appearances of bread and wine in a way that is uniquely suited to the Eucharist. In the Church’s traditional theological language, in the act of consecration during the Eucharist the “substance” of the bread and wine is changed by the power of the Holy Spirit into the “substance” of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. At the same time, the appearances of bread and wine remain. This change at the level of substance from bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is called “transubstantiation.” According to Catholic faith,
we can speak of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist because this transubstantiation has occurred (cf. Catechism, no. 1376). This is a great mystery of our faith—we can only know it from Christ’s teaching given us in the Scriptures and in the Tradition of the Church. Christ’s presence in the Eucharist is unique in that, even though the consecrated bread and wine truly are in substance the Body and Blood of Christ, they have none of the characteristics of a human body, but only those of bread and wine.
