A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR...
1. We have sent $12,000 to Fr. Jude to enable his parish to break ground for his school girl’s dormitory. Thanks to all who donated to this very worthy project.
2. As we look to the official completion of the Year of Mercy on the Feast of Christ the King (November 20th), our Liturgy Committee decided to conclude with a special collection for the Community Health Clinic. This organization provides medical care for those of limited financial means. Several parishioners donate their time and medical services for the poor there. They will speak briefly at each of the Masses on the weekend of November 5th-6th. This effort will be a fitting way for all of us to observe Thanksgiving and the conclusion of the Year of Mercy. I mention this now so that we can plan ahead to make a significant gift. The date of the collection will be November 12th-13th.
3. Please note that there will be no Denison Mass on campus this Sunday. Many of the students are away this weekend.

OCTOBER 23RD, 7:00-9:00 P.M.“Unsettled: Grateful Beggar” A Night on St. Francis and the Religious Life. He is one of the most popular saints with a familiar story, but do you know who he was before he was St. Francis?
NO IGNITE OCTOBER 30TH
Our Student Leadership Team Retreat is November 5th-6th at Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center. If you are in the 9th-12th grade and want to be a leader in our youth group, then please email Marissa at [email protected] or just let a Core Member know at youth group. SLT is an incredible opportunity to lead your peers in faith and witness to younger students. It is also a great addition to any application or resume.
NOTES FROM THE LOFT• CHILDREN’S CHOIR for first through
seventh graders will resume in November! The choir will sing for the Christmas Eve 5:00 p.m. Mass (prelude music begins at 4:30 p.m.). Rehearsals are on Sundays immediately after the 10:45 a.m. Mass (start about noon, end at 12:45 p.m.). For a complete schedule or to sign up, contact Paul at [email protected] or 740-587-3254.
• ON COMMUNION MUSIC, PART III: After the Communion hymn/chant/psalm, our cantors and choir members descend from the loft in order to receive Communion. So, per the US Bishops’ guidelines in Sing to the Lord (193), there is usually instrumental music at that time. Sing to the Lord permits playing a published piece or improvising (43), and that choice is left to the discretion of our accompanists. Other instruments may also play, as our Bell Choir does at the 5:00 Mass this weekend. Depending on the Mass, the instrumental music continues until either the conclusion of the Communion rite or until a sung choir or cantor piece begins. Next week, Part IV.
ST. EDWARD THE CONFESSOR CHURCH GRANVILLE, OHIO
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY ~ OCTOBER 23Today is World Mission Sunday. In announcing his decision to declare a Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said, “Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy.” Supporting the young churches throughout the world with your prayers and generous gifts is indeed a merciful witness of this mission. The collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve those on the margins and in most need. Extend your merciful witness to the whole world through your gift in today’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
HEARTBEATS BOTTLES FOR LIFEToday is the day to return Bottles For Life. Volunteers are available to accept your bottles and donations. In case you forgot, you may return your bottle next week. Bottles may be returned to the Church Office at any time. Heartbeats of Licking County asks that we return all 200 bottles they loaned us. Thank you very much for your generosity and support.
“THEOLOGY THURSDAY” FOR ADULTSDo you need an adult night out, a reason for a “date night” or something different to stimulate your brain? The Adult Faith Formation Committee is sponsoring the first “Theology Thursday” at the Buxton Inn on Thursday, November 3rd from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Please join us for light appetizers, an enlightening talk and social time. Newly ordained Fr. Tony Davis from St. Andrew Parish in Columbus will be the speaker for the evening and his talk will be about Heaven (how many will actually make it there!). The cost for the event is $5.00 per person. Beverages will be available for cash purchase. You can submit your fee to the Parish office or mail it to St. Edward, 785 Newark-Granville Road, Granville, OH 43023 c/o “Theology Thursday.” For further information, contact Cheryl Houser at 740-644-9766 or [email protected].
THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY GROUPMatthew: The King and His Kingdom is an exciting study that explores the life and mission of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel. Matthew demonstrates how the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament are fulfilled in Christ, who establishes a New Law and inaugurates the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. We will see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who relives the life and struggles of Israel to become the faithful and victorious King. Set in the rich context of Jesus’ Jewish culture, this study will help us understand who Jesus is and what his life and teachings mean for us today. Join us for Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, a Bible study that dives into the personhood and kingship of Christ. We will begin on Thursday, October 28th at 9:45 a.m. Call or email Gayle Blubaugh at 740-739-6740 or [email protected] to register.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CENTER NEWSThe St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store is undergoing some
personnel changes. As with any change, there are always some challenges. One major challenge that has come up is the organization of the warehouse area. The good news is the donations are really rolling in. The bad news is the space to house the donations is being stressed. We need volunteers to help us regain control of the warehouse area.
The plan is to begin the work this weekend and to finish on October 29th. We would work on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and on weekdays – 12:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:30-9:00 p.m. The work would entail: 1. Removing old items from previous years’ donations (recycling, selling or donating these items to needy families), 2. Grouping all the donations into the various categories, i.e. clothing, home goods, etc. 3. Organizing the donations by category in the warehouse allowing plenty of room for movement and work areas.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could volunteer to work during one of the scheduled times. Children, middle school age and up, could assist with this work. The thrift store has donated thousands of dollars to both the men’s shelter and food pantry. The funds received from the thrift store are essential to the success of our programs. So please consider this request. If you, your family, classmates are willing to help with this task, please email Chuck Dilbone ([email protected]) with dates and times that you can volunteer. Thank you for your consideration for this request.
FOOD PANTRYThe Food Pantry collection is this weekend. Items most needed this month: canned fruit, hamburger helper-type meals and jelly. Your donations are greatly appreciated.

LIFE QUOTESAs Catholics seek to advance the common good, we must
carefully discern which public policies are morally sound. A good end does not justify an immoral means. At times Catholics may choose different ways to respond to social problems, but we cannot differ on our obligation to protect human life and dignity and help build through moral means a more just and peaceful world.
As Catholics, we should be guided more by our moral convictions than by our attachment to a political party or interest group.

OCTOBER ~ MERCY IS NEVER ORDINARYMercy Mantra
Then Peter approaching asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. Matthew 18:21-22
PARENTS AND CATECHISTSMerciful Minis (0-10)
This month, try to show your littles how BIG God’s mercy is! It’s hard with little ones to help them understand things that are boundless. Let’s try to help them. Have a contest to see who can guess the number of M&Ms in a jar – so many, but God knows exactly how many there are, just like he knows exactly how many hairs are on your head! Whomever guesses closest should be encouraged, but the M&Ms should be divided evenly among the students because just like God’s mercy is available to us, so are the M&Ms.
Then fill that same jar with sand. Ask the students to guess just how many grains of sand are in the jar – you’ll get lots of answers, but it’s near impossible for us to know for sure!!! You might consider dumping the sand into a box and letting them try counting all the grains.
God’s mercy is like the grains of sand in the jar – it is almost impossible for us to completely measure and understand God’s mercy, but there is a lot of it and He will always give it to us if we ask. God will always forgive. God will always offer mercy. Ask the students: can you do that?
Tweens, Teens and 20sSocial media is a big and regular part of our young people’s
experience of the world these days. Social media has the potential to impact a wide range of people from various life experiences and beliefs.
What if our young people took an extraordinary leap on social media? Challenge them to share one merciful message each week for a month – it doesn’t have to be a church generated message, but it could be. Just share it and see how the world responds. How does it transform their social media communities? How do people respond to it? What do the responses tell us about the needs and desires of that online community?
After sharing their experiences, challenge them a second time – share one faith message, one witness to Jesus or someone living the value of the Gospel each week for a month. How does it transform their news feed? How many times does the tweet or post get shared? How many people do they have the potential to reach with the message of the Gospel with one click? by Leisa Anslinger www.CatholicLifeandFaith.net.

The Catechism Corner
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK:
In your personal copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) please continue reading the 5th Commandment: “Thou shall not kill.” We read paragraphs 2276-2279 entitled, “Euthanasia.” 2276 – Those whose lives are diminished or weakened deserve special respect. Sick or handicapped persons should be helped to lead lives as normal as possible. 2277 – Whatever its motives or means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of the handicapped, sick or dying persons. IT IS MORALLY UNACCEPTABLE. Euthanasia constitutes murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his creator. 2278 – Discontinuing medical procedures that are burdensome, extraordinary, or disproportionate to the expected outcome can be legitimate. Here one does not will to cause death; one’s inability to impede is merely accepted. 2279 – Even if death is thought imminent, the ordinary care owed to a sick person cannot be legitimately interrupted.
rr.com.The First Reading today comes to us from
the Book of Sirach, which was once known as the Wisdom of Sirach. As is the norm with Sirach, he gets right to the point in the first verse of the reading: “The Lord God is a God of justice who knows no favorites.”
We are all familiar with the idea of favorites: we may have a favorite color, or a favorite food, or a favorite flower. However, it is comforting to know that God has no favorites. We are all His children. This fact is reinforced over and over in the Bible.
Consider the following: “For there is no favoritism with God.” (Romans 2:11); “For the Lord your God is the God of gods…who favors no person and accepts no bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17); St. Peter opened a sermon with these words: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality.” (Acts 10:34). We may sense that God does not have favorites, that He loves us all equally, that we all can be saved, but we also need to note that God cannot be bribed or bought.
What God expects of us is for us to be disciples, to be good stewards, to live righteous lives. If we sincerely do that, if we pursue holiness as we are called to do, then truly as the Lord tells us in today’s Gospel, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
REMEMBERING THE DEADSummer’s abundance and sun-drenched extroversion is finally over. The harvest has been gathered indoors. The garden’s excess has been turned under the earth. Autumn would look like death if we didn’t know nature’s cyclic patterns. Our religious feasts coincide with nature. In a few weeks we will remember the saints and souls of our forbears who have died. As the harvest has been gathered into barns, these souls have been gathered as a heavenly harvest. And it is right that we remember them as part of the communion of saints. In a corner of the house on a mantel or small table, begin to collect up photographs of people who have been significant in your life and who are now gone. During November, light a votive lamp before their pictures and take turns telling their stories and remembering what you know or have heard about them. Tell of their strengths and tell of their weaknesses. Mention a trait that you think you may have inherited from one or another relative and then mention a talent that you would like to develop in yourself. Conclude your remembrance with a prayer that these souls may sleep the sleep of peace. At the Eucharist, mention them silently by name as we remember all those who have gone before us.Copyright © 2001 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago IL 60622-1101; 1-800-933-1800; www.ltp.org. “What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the truest of guides for human life?” ~Saint Benedict, from the Rule of Saint Benedict (73:3)
“Humility, obedience, meekness, and love are the virtues that shine through the Cross and the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. O my Jesus, help me imitate You!”
~SAINT ANTHONY CLARET
Monday, October 24 ~ Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Anthony Claret, Bishop
Holy Gospel: Luke 13:10-17 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath. And a woman was
there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of
standing erect. When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, “Woman, you are set free of your
infirmity.” He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God. But the leader of
the synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the Sabbath, said to the crowd in reply, “There are six
days when work should be done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the Sabbath day.” The Lord said
to him in reply, “Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the
manger and lead it out for watering? This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen
years now, ought she not to have been set free on the Sabbath day from this bondage?” When he said
this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by
him.
Meditation: An infirmity, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, can come upon us for a variety of
reasons, and God can use such occasions for some purpose that we do not readily understand. When
Jesus encountered an elderly woman who was spent of her strength and unable to stand upright, he gave
her words of faith and freedom and he restored her to health. She must have suffered much, both
physically and spiritually for eighteen years, since Jesus remarked that Satan had bound her. How can
Satan do this? The scriptures indicate that Satan can act in the world with malice and can cause injuries of
a spiritual nature, and indirectly even of a physical nature. Satan's power, however, is not infinite. He
cannot prevent the building up of God's kingdom or reign in our lives. Jesus demonstrates the power and
authority of God's kingdom in releasing people who are oppressed by physical and emotional sickness, by
personal weakness and sin, and by the harassment of the evil one in their lives. It took only one word
from Jesus to release this woman instantly of her infirmity. Do you believe in the power of Jesus to release
you from affliction and oppression?
Prayer: O God, who for the evangelization of peoples strengthened the Bishop Saint Anthony Mary Claret
with admirable charity and long-suffering, grant, through his intercession, that, seeking the things that
are yours, we may earnestly devote ourselves to winning our brothers and sisters for Christ. Who lives
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: The Jewish leaders were indignant that Jesus would perform such a miraculous work on
the Sabbath, the holy day of rest. They were so caught up in their ritual observance of the Sabbath that
they lost sight of God's mercy and goodness. Jesus healed on the Sabbath because God does not rest
from showing his mercy and love, ever. God's word has power to change us, spiritually, physically, and
emotionally. And so today we must look within, be introspective, and ask ourselves if there is anything
that keeps us bound up or that weighs us down? Let the Lord speak his word to you through sacred
scripture and prayer, and give you true freedom, peace and joy.
Tuesday, October 25 ~ Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
Holy Gospel: Luke 13:18-21 Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it? It
is like a mustard seed that a man took and planted in the garden. When it was fully grown, it became a
large bush and the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches.” Again he said, “To what shall I compare the
Kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of wheat flour until
the whole batch of dough was leavened.”
Meditation: What can mustard seeds and leaven teach us about the kingdom of God? The tiny mustard
seed literally grew to be a tree which attracted numerous birds because they loved the little black mustard
seed it produced. God's kingdom works in a similar fashion. It starts from the smallest beginnings in the
hearts of men and women who are receptive to God's word. And it works unseen and causes a
transformation from within. Leaven is another powerful agent of change. A lump of dough left to itself
remains just what it is, a lump of dough. But when the leaven is added to it a transformation takes place
which produces rich and wholesome bread when heated -- the staple of life for humans. The kingdom of
God produces a transformation in those who receive the new life which Jesus Christ offers. When we yield
to Jesus Christ, our lives are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Paul the
Apostle says, “we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to
God and not to us” (2 Cor. 4:7). Do you believe in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit?
Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, increase our faith, hope and charity, and make us love what you
command, so that we may merit what you promise. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Jesus answers his own rhetorical questions with marvelous images -- the tiny seed that
grows into the large bush, the yeast that transforms the flour into an abundance of bread. We know this --
that a small thing can have a big effect, as we have known a suggestion, a hope, an idea – followed – to
lead to a whole career or way of life. From a chance meeting comes a fruitful relationship; from a small
kindness comes – well, salvation. To me, this is about Faith and Hope – especially that my little faith and
smaller abilities may yet help build “the Kingdom of Heaven.” So although I continue to weep and groan, I
pray each day, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done.” A good question for today is: What can I do today
that might be the seed or the bit of yeast that will grow into the Kingdom for others? That’s a good
question, and may be the right question for my readers. But – true confession here! – having considered
this Gospel, I’ve discovered the question truly rhetorical (because I have an answer) that I’ve been trying
to avoid -- that I am finally asking myself today is: What little things (or big things) must I change in my
life so that I will allow God to reign in me?
Wednesday, October 26 ~ Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
Holy Gospel: Luke 13:22-30 Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making
his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them,
“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong
enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside
knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you
are from.’ And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’ Then he
will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!’ And there will be
wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the
Kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west and from
the north and the south and will recline at table in the Kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will
be first, and some are first who will be last.”
Meditation: What does the image of a simple, ordinary door say to us about the kingdom of God? Jesus'
story about the door being shut to those who come too late suggests they had offended their host and
deserved to be excluded. It was customary for teachers in Jesus' time to close the door on tardy students
and not allow them back for a whole week in order to teach them a lesson in discipline and faithfulness.
Jesus told this story in response to the question of who will make it to heaven. Many rabbis held that all
Israel would be saved, except for a few blatant sinners who excluded themselves! After all, they were
specially chosen by God when he established a covenant with them.
Amen.
Contemplation: Notice how Jesus doesn't directly answer the question. But his response is nonetheless
unsettling on two counts. First, Jesus surprised his listeners by saying that one's membership as a
covenanted people does not automatically mean entry into the kingdom of God. Second, Jesus asserts
that many from the gentile nations would enter God's kingdom. God's invitation is open to Jew and Gentile
alike. But Jesus warns that we can be excluded if we do not strive to enter by the narrow door. What did
Jesus mean by this expression? The door which Jesus had in mind was himself. I am the door; if any one
enters by me, he will be saved (John 10:9). Jesus opens the way for us to enter into God's kingdom
through the cross where he laid down his life as an atoning sacrifice for each of our sins. If we want to
enter and remain citizens of God's kingdom, then each of us must follow Jesus in the way of the cross.
The word “strive” can also be translated “agony.” To enter the kingdom of God one must struggle against
the forces of temptation to sin and whatever holds us back from doing the will of God (even apathy,
indifference, and compromise, to name a few).
Thursday, October 27 ~ Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
Holy Gospel: Luke 13:31-35 Some Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Go away, leave this area
because Herod wants to kill you.” He replied, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and I
perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my purpose. Yet I must continue
on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside
of Jerusalem.’ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many
times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you
were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned. But I tell you, you will not see me until the time
comes when you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
Meditation: Jesus compares his longing for Jerusalem with a mother hen gathering her brood under her
protective wings. Psalm 91 speaks of God's protection in such terms: “He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge” (Psalm 91:4). Jesus willingly set his face toward Jerusalem,
knowing that he would meet certain betrayal, rejection, and death on a cross. His death on the cross,
however, brought about victory and salvation, not only for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, but for all – both
Jew and Gentile – who would accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Jesus' prophecy is a two-edged sword,
pointing to his victory over sin and death and foretelling the destruction of Jerusalem and the dire
consequences for all who would reject him and his saving message. While the destruction of Jerusalem's
temple was determined (it was razed by the Romans in 70 A.D.) there remained for its inhabitants a
narrow open door leading to deliverance. Jesus says: I am the door; whoever enters by me will be saved
(ref. John 10:9). The Lord Jesus opens the way for each of us to have direct access to God who adopts us
as his children and who makes his home with us.
Amen.
Contemplation: Do you make room in your life for Jesus Christ? The Lord is knocking at the door of your
heart (ref. Revelations 3:20) and he wishes to enter into a close personal relationship with you. Receive
him who is the giver of expectant faith, unwavering hope, and undying love. And long for the true home
which God has prepared for you in his heavenly city, Jerusalem (ref. Revelations 21:2-4). Think about it:
why would anyone not want to enter into a close personal relationship with Christ? Out of love God
created us, and out of love for us God sent his son into this world to redeem and save us. We have only
one Savior, and his name happens to be Jesus Christ. When God said to those assemble on Mount Tabor,
“This is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased – listen to him...” let’s first listen to Jesus, but
embrace and live his teachings, speak to him in prayer, and develop that loving relationship that will lead
us to eternal life with him.
Friday, October 28 ~ Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles
Holy Gospel: Luke 6:12-16 Jesus went up to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to
God. When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also
named Apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip,
Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, Simon who was called a Zealot, and Judas the
son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Meditation: In choosing the 12 Apostles, we see a characteristic feature of God's work – Jesus chose very
ordinary people, from everyday walks of life. Sinners all, they were non-professionals, who had no wealth
or position. They were chosen from the common people who did ordinary things, had no special education,
and no social advantages. Jesus wanted ordinary people who could take an assignment and do it
extraordinarily well. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of
becoming under his direction and power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not shrug back
because we think that we have little or nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can
offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom.
Prayer: O God, who by the blessed Apostles have brought us to acknowledge your name, graciously
grant, through the intercession of Saints Simon and Jude, that the Church may constantly grow by
increase of the peoples who believe in you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns
with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: What is God’s call to you? And are you responding to God’s call? Just as Jesus called
the 12 Apostles in various ways to “Come, follow me…” Jesus extends this same invitation to each one of
us, to share in his mission, to live our lives according to the laws of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
We, too, are ordinary, everyday people, all capable of achieving many things – great and small – as
Christ’s followers, as his disciples. What’s holding you back from giving yourself entirely over to God? Are
you ready to respond to Jesus’ invitation of “Come, follow me…” or is something holding you back?
Saturday, October 29 ~ Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
Holy Gospel: Luke 14:1,7-11 On a Sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading
Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. He told a parable to those who had been
invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. “When you are invited by
someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest
than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say,
‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.
Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may
say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the
table. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Meditation: Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues because it enables us to view and judge
ourselves correctly – correctly meaning the was that God sees us, which is more important than the way
others may view us through the lens of the secular world. Humility leads to true self-knowledge, honesty,
realism, strength, and dedication to give ourselves to something greater than ourselves. Humility frees us
to love and serve others selflessly, for their sake, rather than our own. Saint Paul gives us the greatest
example and model of humility in the person of Jesus Christ, who emptied himself, taking the form of a
servant, ...who humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross (ref. Philippians
2:7-8). The Lord Jesus gives grace to all people who seek him humbly.
Amen.
Contemplation: Think about what true humility is. True humility is not feeling bad about yourself, or
having a low opinion of yourself, or thinking of yourself as inferior to others. True humility frees us from
preoccupation with ourselves, whereas a low self-opinion tends to focus our attention on ourselves.
Humility is truth in self-understanding and truth in action. Viewing ourselves truthfully, with sober
judgment, means seeing ourselves the way God sees us (ref. Psalm 139:1-4). A humble person makes a
realistic assessment of himself or herself without illusion or pretense to be something he or she is not. The
humble regard themselves as being neither smaller nor larger than they truly are. True humility frees us
to be our true selves, avoiding despair and pride. A humble person does not have to put on a facade in
order to look good to others, especially to those who are not really familiar with that person. The humble
are not swayed by things such as fame, glory, reputation, success, or failure. The humble person wants
to serve God fully, and simply do God’s will. Pray simply to be humble as Christ was humble and to love
freely and graciously all whom we are called to serve. Remember what Saint Augustine said: “It was
pride that changed the angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels.”
