From the Desk of Father Jonathan

As we prepared last week for Christmas at the parish, sever-al times I stopped and reflected on how Mary and Joseph might have prepared for big events in their family. The fact that they were the Holy Family didn't mean they didn't have to cook, prepare the house, send invitations, or even decide which side of the family they would spend time with. Their holiness didn't mean they were free from the difficul-ties we all encounter around the holidays. In fact, perhaps it was even harder for them to live holy days when all around them they saw people living the season with great superficiali-ty. I can picture Mary having conversations with neighbors who didn't know or accept the fact that the Messiah was living right next door! I can picture Jesus having to deal with friends or co-workers who rushed around to get ready for high holy days, all while still making fun of him for his very non-traditional family, with all of the questions and rumors that plagued him about the origin of his step-son and the "questionable character" of his wife as a single mother, now with Joseph. I picture, however, Mary and Joseph living these holy days with deep reflection and peace, despite what was happening around them. They surely knew what was most important was not what other people thought, did, or said. They focused on what would last! We can do that too! Christmas for Christians is just begin-ning. Look to Mary! Look to Joseph! Look to Jesus! They will teach us how to live these holy days! God bless, Father Jonathan

(c)lachiesa.it

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Hannah conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son whom she called Samuel (1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28) or Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14. Psalm — Blessed are they who dwell in your house, O Lord (Psalm 84) or Psalm 128. Second Reading — See what love the Father has be-stowed on us that we may be called the children of God (1 John 3:1-2, 21-24) or Colossians 3:12-21 [12-17]. Gospel — The boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. They found him in the temple, in the midst of the teachers (Luke 2:41-52). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and schol-ars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious cen-ter of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gath-ered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: par-ents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tra-dition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage—the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life’s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pil-grimages to the family homestead for festival meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or per-haps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind!

DOMINGO PROXIMO
