LITURGICAL UPDATES: PRAYER, FORGIVENESS, AND INDULGENCES

Diocese of Ogdensburg March 23, 2020

In Bishop LaValley’s letter to Priests dated March 17, he stated that, at this time “the individual reception of the Sacra-ment of Penance may continue to be offered. We are not in a situation that requires general absolution. Again, social dis-tancing for all present as well as maintainingthe necessary health precautions is important.” Some pastors have chosen to only hear confessions in open spaces such as their chapel or from a church window to maintain good health precautions. Wednesday, March 25 is the Feast of the Annunciation. Pope Francis asks Christians of every denomination to pray the Lord’s Prayer at noon on that day. The Holy Father said, “To the pandemic of the virus we want to respond with the universality of prayer, compassion and tenderness. Let’s stay united. Let us make those who are

alone and tested feel our closeness...as well as doctors, nurses, other healthcare workers and volunteers.” Again, let us all join the Holy Father at noon on Wednesday in reciting the Lord’s Prayer. As we continue to provide pastoral care to our parishion-ers, Bishop LaValley offered us the following resource from the USCCB: The Care of Souls and the Forgiveness of Sins During This Pandemic. Given the current difficulty one encounters in celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Holy See has offered recourses to the faithful: 1. “Where the individual faithful find themselves in the pain- ful impossibility of receiving sacramental absolution, it should be remembered that perfect contrition, coming from the love of God, expressed by a sincere request for for-giveness and accompanied by the firm resolution to have recourse, as soon as possible, to sacramental confession, obtains forgiveness of sins, even mortal ones (cf. CCC, 1452).” Perfect contrition requires 1. Love of God 2. The sincere desire for forgiveness 3. The ardent commitment to receive the sacrament of rec-onciliation when available. 2. “The gift of special Indulgences is granted to the faithful suffering from COVID-19 disease (coronavirus), as well as to health care workers, family members and all those who in any capacity, including through prayer, care for them” • A Plenary indulgence is “granted to the faithful suffering from Coronavirus, who are subject to quarantine by order of the health authority in hospitals or in their own homes if, with a spirit detached from any sin, they unite spiritually through the media to the celebration of Holy Mass, the recitation of the Holy Rosary, to the pious practice of the Way of the Cross or other forms of devotion, or if at least they will recite the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and a pious invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this trial in a spirit of faith in God and charity towards their sisters and

An indulgence is “the expression of the Church’s full con-fidence of being heard by the Father when – in view of Christ’s merits and, by His gift, those of our Lady and the saints– she asks Him to mitigate or cancel the painful as-pect of punishment by fostering its medicinal aspect through other channels of grace” (John Paul II, General Audience, Sept.29, 1999). Promotion and catechesis on these remedies during the absence of the sacrament of Reconciliation can be a source of great consolation for all the faithful. A brief catechesis on how the faithful can participate in both the indulgence and the act of perfect contrition will be shortly available on the USCCB website usccb.org.

Divine Mercy Sunday Watertown- Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church will hold a Divine Mercy Sunday Celebration. For all Catholics, active and fallen-away. We are called to bring home fallen-away Catholics...The greater the sinner, the more he is entitled to God’s mercy! According to the Divine Mercy message, “the soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Com-munion on Mercy Sunday without mortal sin, shall obtain complete forgiveness of all sins and punish-ment. Your soul will be as white as snow, blemish free, Like that of a New Baptism...!!! Divine Mercy Sunday will be Celebrated on April 19th at 3 P.M. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Watertown. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Singing of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, confession, & a procession. You may bring your own Divine Mercy picture to be specially blessed.
