Pastor Mike’s Musings
Something new will be appearing in the fellowship hall in May - the simplest way to describe it a “giving kiosk.” What is a giving kiosk you might ask - and I’m glad that you did. The advent of giving kiosks
on church campuses reflect the different ways that folks want to support the church - different even from the time of my youth. !I remember leaving for worship as a family. As we left our house, there was a small table near the door - on that table was our giving envelopes. My mother, and it was always my mouther, would take this Sunday’s envelope and in the car ride to church (only about 2 min) would write out the tithe check, slip it in the envelope and seal it. Then, during several places in the worship service - my brothers and I would argue over who got to place the envelope in the offering plate when it came by. That was our routine for as long as I can remember. In the church that I grew up in, there were two ways that you were allowed to give to the church’s mission and ministry - cash or check. !Well times have changed and the tried and true methods of giving to the church (and just about every other non-profit) have changed as well. Many folks just don’t carry cash or check any more and the preferred option for making all sorts of transactions is with a credit/debit card. !Much of becoming a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ involves removing obstacles. Our sin creates barriers between us and God. Our overflowing schedules create detours and blowouts on the road to Sabbath rest. Our financial priorities can develop massive hurdles on the path to generosity. Part of the local church’s work is to help Christ-followers identify and eliminate these—and many other—barriers on our transformational journey. And sometimes, the church inadvertently creates those obstacles, many of them in the area of generosity.
What is the point of having a giving kiosk? The point is not to get more money into the church coffers. The point is to offer folks a way of giving to Resurrection in a way that is convenient, safe and user friendly as possible. !Ben Fredericks and other members of the church council will be staffing the giving kiosk so give folks some help as they navigate using this piece of technology. We want everyone to know that you do not need to use the kiosk if you don’t want to. The goal of offering this option is to remove barriers that might exist that keep people from giving. You (and you alone) chose the method of your giving. You may use the plate on Sunday morning, use the only giving portal though our webpage or you may use the giving kiosk. No one will be forced to use any one type of method. !I hope that you will take advantage of our giving kiosk when you need it. This is one way that we, as a congregation, practice hospitality to those who are new to the church - it really makes us more open and welcoming to those seeking a church home. !Blessings! ~ Pr. Mike

This session is on Abigail, a Calm Strategist !
"Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves, two skins of wine, five sheep ready dressed, five measures of parched grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs. She loaded them on donkeys and said to her young men
'Go on ahead of me; I am coming after you.' But she did not tell her husband Nabal.: 1 Samuel 25:18-19
From the “Pen of Ben” - RLC Council President
What’s new in the Fellowship Hall? Revised pictures of our 2014-2015 Council. Four new members were added to Council in February- do you know them? They are Mike Petke, Sally Ritchie, Sue Hiersche, and Betty Palmer.
Easter Sunday on a beautiful day, amid those pesky April showers, saw the Youth deliver a wonderful breakfast. As my current vocation is “Cruising”, I actually felt like I was in the Lido on a Princess ship. A food line with all kinds of choices and a wait staff who continually were asking, “Do you need
more juice, or coffee?” BRAVO to Troy and all the Youth who work so hard on this project. Easter services were full as we had 173 at 9:15 and 179 at 11:15. Many thanks to those who made each service special.
Speaking of Youth, don’t forget the Youth Auction is coming on Saturday May 17th in the Fellowship Hall with dinner, RLC Players, and as of this writing, over 70 items are up for bid! Still time to get your tickets this Sunday!!!
The Lord works in wonderful and mysterious ways. In last month’s column, it was noted we would not have a Vicar for 2014-2015. Surprise! Pastor Mike received a call from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. Vicar Michael will join us sometime in the summer and our new pastoral team will be “Mike and Mike” (I’ve heard that one before). More details coming once his arrival date is set.
To reach out to me, e-mail is [email protected]. See me at church and/or with “Beagles/Donuts with Ben” on the third Sunday each month between services in the Fellowship Hall. Blessings, Ben

Thank You My Friends!!
This year we have two silent auctions and one oral auction. Leading us as our auctioneer is our very own “quick- witted” and “jovial” vicar, Fritz Fowler. Share in the fun, as the enthusiastic Resurrection Players present the “dinner-time” entertainment. Don’t miss the special guest appearance by Tim the “Tool Man” Taylor and his neighbor Mr. Wilson as the players perform a short “Tool Time” skit (based on one of America’s favorite TV shows). !We have approximately 70 items in this year’s auction – many great items have been received for your bidding pleasure. These include dinners, trips, hotel rooms, romantic getaways, and much, much more. If you have a donation idea, please do not hesitate to contact Troy Lutz at 503-255-8772. !Don’t forget about $10 “Mission Shares”. Mission shares are great for those who want to support the purpose of the Calvin Youth Auction but are unable to attend. Mission shares will also be available at the auction for those that got “out-bided” and would like to support our youth. !Get your tickets and mission shares at the church. Look for the ticket-table in the fellowship hall on Sundays during the coffee-mingle. Child-care is available. However, please indicate your need for childcare on your ticket form. !“Building Tomorrows Disciples” - Auction 2014 will be the best ever! We’ll see you May 17th for a great time. !See you at the auction!

BUILDING TOMORROW’S DISCIPLES
!Youth & Family News
It’s no ordinary Vaca/on Bible School! It’s “camp” all day long right here at Resurrec/on church. This year “Camp Lutherwood” is coming to Resurrec/on and hos/ng our VBS – and it’s not just a ½ day it’s a full day of camp too. !Everyday children arrive here at 9AM and stay here un/l 3:15PM. Kids will gather for an energizing /me of worship, followed by bible study, games, arts & craUs, recrea/on, singing, group /me and a closing outside worship. !Camp offers campers, the opportunity to refocus and par/cipate in God’s kingdom here and now—a kingdom characterized by love, grace, and compassion—and an/cipate the promised kingdom to come when all of life will be lived as God intended in holy /me. Camp is a holy /me—a /me set apart to be part of an inten/onal Chris/an community. Each day of camp worship, Bible study, prayer, singing, having fun, and sharing meals mark the rhythm of life. Such rhythm stands in sharp contrast to the normal structure of contemporary life, characterized most by exhaus/ng busyness. !Although Camp Lutherwood will be running the program and will be bringing staff with them there will be plenty of need for volunteers. So plan now to be a part of what will be a fantas/c daily adventure (sign-‐up at the Informa3on Center under “up-‐coming” events).
!
Day Camp !!(AKA$%$Vacation$Bible$School)$
July 28 – August 1 !
The Chris/an church year is developed into six major seasons: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. Each day at camp, we will focus on a different season of the church year and explore how the season helps us live in holy /me, drawing us to a deeper understanding of the story of Jesus. Campers will discover how these Holy Days (or holidays) can be celebrated, not just once a year, but every day as we live a life of celebra/on characterized by God’s rhythm.
Second Annual “All RLC” Family Camp!!
What is “All RLC” Family Camp? Anyone who aaends RLC is part of the RLC Family and can aaend the “All RLC” Family Camp. It does not mean you have to have a family with small children. ! Time to sign up for the second annual RLC family camp! This year’s event is scheduled for July 25th – 27th at the KOA camp in Astoria. This is a great opportunity to connect with each other in a much deeper and in/mate way as we grow closer together as friends in Christ Jesus.
Kampgrounds Of America in Astoria is one of the best KOA camps in the state of Oregon as it offers a variety of things to do in addi/on to just camping. Explore the Military Forts; check out the Peter Ire dale shipwreck, spend the day with family and friends on the beach, bounce houses & other inflatable’s, face pain/ng, /e die shirts, movie nights, pegng zoo, free pancake breakfast every morning, swimming pool, bike rentals, playgrounds, basketball, volleyball & more. !Don’t miss this year’s event; sign up while space is s/ll available at the informa/on center under “up-‐coming” events. Ques/ons contact Troy at 503-‐255-‐8772.
COMING TO RLC THEATER AN EVENT FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY
We had originally planned to have a private screening for RLC family to see this film at a theater nearby. However aUer checking further into the prices for the 11:00 /me, the cost for this event could be as much as $60 for a family of four. Therefore to keep cost down for the family of RLC we are going to show the film here at RLC on June 14. Mark your calendars and plan to join us for this event with discussion to follow.

with Waodani warriors in Ecuador, who years earlier killed his father in the 1950’s. !
It's a moving story of discovery, and learning how to forgive others. !You can find this book in the Memorial Collection, in the RLC Library.
A Thank You……… !Dear Friends in Christ who remembered me with cards and prayers when I was hurting. I’m sure that was a good part of the healing process. Thank you so much and God bless.

Fair Trade News ! Coffee and Partnership !
Lutheran World Relief is a ministry of U.S. Lutheran synods working together to serve impoverished folks overseas. Our partnership follows the law of Christ expressed in Galatians 6:2.
“Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” LWR in turn works with Equal Exchange, a democratically organized, worker-owned co-operative to build long-term trade partnerships that are beneficial to both the farmers and the consumers. The
emphasis is on fairness and on economically and environmentally sound principles. Our commitment is long term. Galatians 6:9 exhorts us….
“And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”
The coffee and other fair-trade foods that we sell the first Sunday of each month at Resurrection support our long-term commitment to this partnership. Thank you!
